Well, if those who self identify as hipsters operate under the illusion that taking part in a consumer trend which offers no lasting contribution to culture at large is in any way meaningful or distinct from other consumer trends... then they are in fact "Dickheads" as you say.

It's like disco, man. Disco was the same thing- a culture based loosely around music and style that was nothing but a clusterfuck of consumerism that most people used to justify indescriminate drug use and get laid.

The only thing disco contributed to the world at large is the huge fucking question mark of "What the fuck was with the Sgt. Pepper Movie?" and a stereotype.

That's one thing more than the current Hipster trend will offer. In 20 years people will look back at the mustaches they grew to satisfy groupthink and laugh, "Man, I was rediculous... I really thought I was changing the world with my tumblr!"

The same way people look back at their platform shoes and go, "Man, I really thought disco would last forever!"

It's nothing. It will leave nothing. Which is fine- not all things should be important on the grande scheme and sometimes joining a group because it's what you want at the time is perfectly human. Just don't tell me that a transient social club based primarily on what you purchased last week at the thrift store is a meaningful counterculture. It's not.
