Lesbian here- sadly, this is true. Acting straight enough will indeed make people think of you as straight, which means they'll direct their homophobia to more stereotypically gay people.

Unfortunately, there's a flip side. Us lady homosexuals will experience a LOT of sexual harassment and creepiness for being feminine, but we will have a lot of stereotypical homophobia for being butch and less feminine.

So it works, really, and any closeted homo will attest to that. There's a reason we're "roommates"...

My son is Homosexual and he "acts" normal. How can a person act more or less who they are. Just think about all of the different personality types that would have to act a different way to get a different response. How about Don't act like a bully? Don't put your hands on a person living their life the way they are living it. It doesn't involve you. My son attempted suicide at 12 years old because he he thought he wasn't normal enough. He came out to his friends in the 11th grade. I begged him to wait for college because of people that wouldn't like him being who he is. He said he couldn't wait, educated me on the suicide rates among LGBT youth. Told me he couldn't stand by and watch. His 2nd year at University he now stands up for himself and encourages and inspires others who are having trouble to be true to themselves. I couldn't be more proud of him.
