Terrible news everyone.

All are now sold out, sorry. Yes, we know you really want one and we wish we could get one for you, too. No, it will not be reprinted as each Gonsalves is in a limited edition.

[–]poutinepurist 7 points8 points ago

Wouldn't want to cripple the world economy by flooding the market with Gonsalveses.

[–]atticusw 11 points12 points ago

"Oh honey this is such a beautiful bridge we're driv-OH DEAR GODLSLDSGURGLEGURBLE GLUB GLUB GLUB"

[–]sqazm 21 points22 points ago

Your favorite piece of art is on the cover of a fantastic book called Masters of Deception.

[–]DeadDiskoDog 12 points13 points ago

If you would like a look, I scanned some of my favorites and the more interesting examples from this book.

http://www.reddit.com/r/woahdude/comments/xfjk4/masters_of_deception_illusionary_art_pics/

Of people I've shown the book Gonsalves seemed to be the favorite, with works like this:

[–]sqazm 2 points3 points ago

I got the book as a Christmas present a few years back, after finding it in a Barnes and Noble. It's fantastic. =)

[–]ndcheezit 1 point2 points ago

You. Hey you. I did the same thing. I love that book. I think it was on their clearance table or one of the bargain tables.

[–]Ramazzo 0 points1 point ago

It is on my shelf at this exact moment :)

[–]Ninjakunai2 1 point2 points ago

Thank you for introducing me to an awesome artist. He reminds me of Escher!

[–]randomtroubledmind 0 points1 point ago

Fantastic book!

[–]did_you_read_it 120 points121 points ago

[–]Cannonwe2 16 points17 points ago

Is that the Confederation Bridge? Sure looks like it.

[–]JeremyKean 2 points3 points ago

[–]Cannonwe2 0 points1 point ago

Absolutely beautiful painting, if it is or isn't the bridge. I've shown all my family, and all of their reactions were "This is a nice paiting of The Bridge!"

[–]Narissis 1 point2 points ago

It definitely reminded me of the Confederation Bridge... it has the curve and everything!

[–]flocculonodular 13 points14 points ago

For whatever reason this makes me think of Chris Van Allsburg (Polar Express, Jumanji, The Wreck of the Zephyr): http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lnxrblacrk1qijk7lo1_500.jpg

[–]TFlo1213[S] 5 points6 points ago

I like that, a lot. I want a huge white wall room in my house that I can just put a bunch of bad ass paintings. And then never check my bank account so I don't have to cry.

[–]flocculonodular 0 points1 point ago

I'm working on my own art wall right now. Only it's mostly prints and photos as I am a poor grad student. As such, I cry often. I don't even need to look at my bank account.

[–]JessesGurl 15 points16 points ago

Have you heard of Vladimir Kush I love his work.

[–]Jayshwa 6 points7 points ago

Saw his gallery in Las Vegas, fell in love.

[–]puphpass 5 points6 points ago

also his gallery in laguna beach is quite nice. my favorite

[–]JessesGurl 0 points1 point ago

That one is beautiful, one of my favorites is the "Departure of the winged ship", but with his work it's so hard for me to pick a favorite.

[–]JessesGurl 1 point2 points ago

Yea his gallery on vacation in Hawaii and I wanted to buy it all!

[–]Slothemo 0 points1 point ago

Came here to comment on him and his Vegas gallery. Brilliant stuff.

[–]Aegr_Rotfedic 1 point2 points ago

That mans work is so beautiful. Its like the more accessible side of surrealism but it doesn't lose any depth.

[–]smaug88 2 points3 points ago

As Magritte and Escher, I would call this "magical realism". It's between the surreal and the fantastic, something that has been seen in other arts like south american writing (Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Jorge Luis Borges) and in movies such as Pan's Labyrinth. I can't get enough of this style.

[–]Ftumsh 0 points1 point ago

Have you read any Isabel Allende?

[–]talking_muffin 0 points1 point ago

He actually calls it "Metaphorical Realism" but I kinda like "magical realism" better!

[–]kevlore 0 points1 point ago

Thank you for reminding me.

I wandered into his gallery on Maui, and was blown away. He had one giant (5'x10'ish) painting that seemed to incorporate a lot of his smaller individual works into one awesome scene. I stood and gawked at it for about 30 minutes. If it didn't cost a fortune I would hire him to paint a giant mural on one of my walls. I've even got the wall picked out...

I'd since forgotten his name, but you FTFM. Thank you!

[–]JessesGurl 1 point2 points ago

No problem glad I could help. I would hire him to do the same in my house or at least a bunch of different paintings if I could too!

[–]talking_muffin 1 point2 points ago

I was lucky enough to receive my favorite Kush painting as a print for Christmast one year. Every year since then I buy his calendar and then at the end of the year I cut out my favorite pictures, glue them onto white cardstock and stick it in a frame. Here is the result so far: http://i.imgur.com/pCsXV.jpg?1

[–]JessesGurl 0 points1 point ago

Oh wow I like really that! That's a good idea I might have to start doing that now :P

[–]talking_muffin 0 points1 point ago

You should! The calendar is only $30 and you can buy it here: http://vladimirkush.com/Calendars

I could never afford to buy an actual painting but I still want to enjoy and the support the artist, so I think it's a good enough compromise. =)

[–]JessesGurl 0 points1 point ago

Yea it may not be the real thing but close enough for me!

[–]SandS5000 0 points1 point ago

ahh yeee VK, met him in Maui, he was kind of a dick.. I still bought his coffee table book.

[–]JessesGurl 0 points1 point ago

Probably just because he knows he's fucking amazing, not that if I was as good as him I would be a dick but just sayin.

[–]timaaaaaaay 0 points1 point ago

Kush has an ego to match his wok. His prints are also of notorious bad quality.

[–]Bennyboy1337 26 points27 points ago

If you like ship paintings you may like the one I just re-created of JMW Turner's painting "The Fighting Temeraire".

[–]mershed_perderders 13 points14 points ago

Hey, this was in the new James Bond flick!

[–]Bennyboy1337 1 point2 points ago

Yup ;)

[–]TFlo1213[S] 5 points6 points ago

These are awesome! I'm not very educated on this type of art, so thank you for showing me!

[–]Bennyboy1337 2 points3 points ago

My pleasure, I'm not educated either, just an admirer.

[–]Peddyslate 2 points3 points ago

Pssst, the topsail yard lowers down on the main, and the royal down on the topgallant. And you're missing shrouds and platforms between the mainmast, topsail mast and topgallant mast... Main and topsail yard should be slightly wider, and the masts a bit shorter. Add studdingsail yards for detail.

That'd look grand on a 1700's ship of the line like this. I haven't looked into this, but it's the same kind as Nelsons HMS Victory.

I know it's knit-picking, but it completely bugs me out when the rigging is wrong. Both the riggind, as well as the trim of the sails in OP's post is waaay off - rehards, a guy who sails full rigged ships =)

[–]Bennyboy1337 1 point2 points ago

No worries, glad someone knows more about rigging than me, I just took screenshots of what was in the game. The Temeraire was a 2nd ship of the line, the ship I used in my picture was the only 2nd line ship in the game, it was the closest I could get.

[–]Peddyslate 0 points1 point ago

Here is a picture of HMS Victory, it shows pretty much the correct rigging for a ship this size. Might not be a ship of the line, but it's got three gun decks. I'm not certain how the rating of a ships really went in the 1700's and 1800's, but "Temeraire" can not have been very much smaller, if at all. I don't think it necessarily was strictly about size, would explain it. The rig you've used looks like it's lifted of a newer, smaller ship.

Anyway, they're both late 1700's ships. The big, american/french frigates in the napoleonic wars, such as USS Constitution completely changed ship design in early 1800's. But my speciality is still viking ships, boats and later derivatives of those, in a few weeks I'm being interviewed for a position as a conservator in a museum here in Norway =)

[–]Bennyboy1337 1 point2 points ago

HMS is a first rate ship of the line, of the few ever built; I wish the game as able to render all that rigging.

[–]Bennyboy1337 1 point2 points ago

Just read the part about you getting a position at that museum, that's so cool, wish I could have a job like that to some extent; good luck with the interview :)

[–]Bennyboy1337 1 point2 points ago

from the early years of the 1700's the first rates comprised those ships mounting 100 guns or more on three gundecks.[1]

JFYI, hope I can visit the Victory some day.

[–]aednichols 1 point2 points ago

IIRC the painting is intentionally a bit unrealistic for the sake of dramatic effect. The Temeraire had been sitting around as a hulk for some time before it was towed away to be broken up (as shown here), so the notion that it had any masts or rigging at all is artistic license.

[–]Peddyslate 1 point2 points ago

Absolutely. But since I've sailed quite a bit on (newer) full rigged ships, I couldn't help my self. It's still very good!

[–]aednichols 2 points3 points ago

One other inconsistency I see a lot in art and media is a flag or pendant on a ship under sail streaming to aft, as if the ship were moving faster than the wind. Once I noticed it the first time, I started seeing it everywhere.

[–]Peddyslate 2 points3 points ago

Haha! Never thought of that, but you're completely right!

[–]TheBigDickedBandit -2 points-1 points ago

No offense to your art, it's lovely, but I don't see how your picture and OP's are similar, except they both include boats.

In fact they are almost completely unrelated

[–]Bennyboy1337 7 points8 points ago

Boat people like me tend to have a fetish for masted hunks of wood, that's what I took OP for.

[–]TFlo1213[S] 1 point2 points ago

Nailed it.

[–]pretty-little-angel 0 points1 point ago

I saw it at the National Gallery in London a couple of years ago and I fell in love with it.

I like your take on it.

[–]AhhhClem 0 points1 point ago

Non monsieur dees one:

http://www.janeausten.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/graphics/redoubtable.jpg

Temeraire then rammed into the Redoutable, dismounting many of the French ship's guns, and worked her way alongside, after which her crew lashed the two ships together. Temeraire now poured continuous broadsides into the French ship, taking fire as she did so from the 112-gun Spanish ship Santa Ana lying off her stern, and from the 74-gun French ship Fougueux, which came up on Temeraire's un-engaged starboard side...

[–]whitewhitewine 2 points3 points ago

reminds me of a lot of magritte's work, especially l'empire des lumieres and le blanc-seing.

[–]bakuretsu 1 point2 points ago

Totally came here to say this. L'empire des Lumieres is one of my favorite paintings.

[–]whitewhitewine 0 points1 point ago

samesies! had a poster of it on my wall in college. was totally bummed when it ripped upon trying to take it off. i've never used poster tape since. the pain still burns.

May not be the right spot, but damn that boat is awesome. It's my dream (and forever will be probably), to have a boat like that.

[–]ashbashbumrash 2 points3 points ago

Does anyone know a painting in this style of a girl in a room and there is a sea coming in from outside through the door? You can see out some other windows too I think. I can't remember much else about it but I saw it when I was a kid and have always wanted to find it again.

[–]PulpFact 6 points7 points ago

I have this coffee table book and this is one of the featured artists.

That looks like the new toll bridge over lake lewisville. Is that the new toll bridge over lake lewisville?

[–]GoldenWaffles -1 points0 points ago

My brain does not comprehend this picture

[–]JamersonRosenburg 2 points3 points ago

I guess the metaphor would be how ships act as bridges between masses of land. Connected distances across the sea.

I can't help it... The rigging and the trim is completely wrong! It's pretty, but I'm sailing ships like that. The reason it's called "ship shape" is because a proper sailor keeps everything spotless and Bristol fashion all times!

dejavu from a dream I had where i was flying and the bridge turned into something like this... weird

[–]OhSeven 0 points1 point ago

I recognized an art piece? I'm gonna give myself a little pat on the back, but I'm a little ashamed because I only remember it from a store in Downtown Disney. I saved a text message draft of "Gonsalvez" in my LG flip phone 10 years ago. I bought a CD from there for $40 that night too, and it's still a favorite. Good times

Don't mind my rambling

[–]AhhhClem 0 points1 point ago

First I must confess that last night I started a long book chronicling the naval engagement at Trafalgar that Lord Admiral Nelson is so famous for, that and the Battle of the Nile. When I look at pictures of sailing ships I tend to see irregularities in the representation. First off I though royals on all masts on what looks like a 20 gun frigate seems odd but not impossible. Also flags are not attached to the top of the masts. It would be difficult to hoist and drop them in that position, they are flown at the stern indicating the country of registry and at the bow indicating where bound. But what seems just wrong is that given that the wind is on the starboard quarter shown by the flags and waves the sails are set in a manner that would make the ship unmanageable. The fore and main courses are reefed and the mizzen is set. And who the hell puts a course on the mizzen instead of a spanker outside of the doldrums? If the master wants to wear about without sheeting in he had better be ready to be caught aback. Damn peculiar I must say.
