It feels sort of like that Robot Chicken/Family Guy style of keeping the joke going with a reaction to the "punchline" which extends well beyond the punchline itself.

(To be fair, Robot Chicken didn't get too bad at this until Season 5 or so.)

It is a self-defense mechanism for unicorns. Unicorns cannot be around non-virgins, and so cutting the courtship ritual off early by preventing kissing keeps the unicorn safe from the unfortunate position of being in a person who has very recently become a non-virgin.

Hi. Question for Ms. Bellamy. In episode 2F09, when Itchy plays Scratchy's skeleton like a xylophone, he strikes the same rib twice in succession, yet he produces two clearly different tones. It's just the way I chose to show it but you're right, it probably would have been just as funny the other way. I typically use four or six panels in my comics just to make things more uniform, so I guess my brain is now hard wired to make all of my ideas happen in even-numbered panels.

I think you did it the right way. The hole punching in the second panel is subtle enough that I didn't notice the first time I read the comic. I focused on the lips. Then after the ending was revealed I went back, and there it was!

I actually agree with you. Sometimes I just go with what I think of originally and then when I put it up on here, people put their two cents in. I think the third and fourth frame would have been funnier if I had just shown them kissing, not the horn part. Live and learn.

I actually like this take. It basically has 2 punchlines in this version. Instead of it being just a build-up to her dying, she dies in panel 2 punchline then we see a unicorn in a pulp-fiction-esqe setting, freaking out in a hilarious non-magical creature way, spouting obscenities and freaking out punchline.

I emailed an artist I looked up to at the time telling him I had started my own comic and he tore me to pieces. He wrote back saying that he hated stick figure comics and that he "fucking drew" his. If I wasn't going to take the time to draw mine he wasn't going to take the time to read it. Crushed me but I started working on my comic drawing all the same. Consequently, I wrote him again about a year after I started actually drawing them to thank him for inspiring me to try harder and he never replied.
