The first person ever to find mew

[–]OccamsAxe 97 points98 points ago

Aren't they still discovering exploits you can do in that game?

[–]TheOriginalFlyingPig 119 points120 points ago

This is true. Recently it was discovered that there was an item programed into the game that allowed you to surf without a pokemon. It was discussed in this thread about a month ago. Pretty cool discovery

[–]bahlgan 47 points48 points ago

Oh yeah, the "surfboard"?

Debugging item. Or at least that's what the code seems to denote.

[–]TheOriginalFlyingPig 29 points30 points ago

Yupp. I think it's funny how when using this item the user transforms into the surfing pokemon sprite.

[–]jaxspider 14 points15 points ago

As someone who know code, thats seams logical. Why draw a whole new icon/image for a debugging tool? When you can just use something already for it as a placeholder.

The way to find out who the good programmer is by seeing who makes the best shortcuts.

[–]TheOriginalFlyingPig 9 points10 points ago

Makes a lot of sense. I just think it's funny because of the running joke regarding surfing Pokemon

[–]CharAznable 13 points14 points ago

That's new? I had a gameshark code that did that when i was 12. It showed up in your inventory as ??????. Also had a neat-ass walk through walls item called "Nickname".

[–]thebackhand 11 points12 points ago

I'm pretty sure the code was 01A77CCF.

That's from memory, and I literally haven't done it in almost fifteen years, so YMMV.

[–]thechangbang 6 points7 points ago

Go home, rain man, you're drunk.

[–]AlexanderMoore2 0 points1 point ago

Wouldn't you just be able to hack the shit out of it, not even needing to find exploits, making your own new crap?

Ah, I sound like a douche again.

[–]newtothelyte 22 points23 points ago

How bout the first person who discovered the item replication gif.

[–]cwnc2008 31 points32 points ago

The way the exploit works leads me to believe that it wasn't discovered by accident. Rather, some reverse-engineer probably noticed that the pokeball trainer guy modified the game state in a way that altered encounters in a certain location.

[–]thetacriterion 19 points20 points ago

Highly likely. The game temporarily saves the player's name to the space used for encounter tables, so they can replace it with "OLD MAN" while the tutorial plays. Ordinarily that would be overwritten the next time the player leaves the area, but Flying bypasses that.

I imagine someone with an understanding of how this system works could guess at what would happen if you managed to leave the area.

[–]noddwyd 6 points7 points ago

It would be fairly probable to discover the surfing on the beach glitch pretty easily. And start using it to catch safari pokemon with normal pokeballs. The missingno thing, though....that would take some intense experimentation.

[–]cwnc2008 16 points17 points ago

I'm pretty sure whoever encountered the first missingno noticed the item duplication right away.

As for the beach glitch, who in the hell talks to the old man after gaining access to Cinnabar island, then surfs back and forth in that exact spot? It's much more likely that the exploit was discovered by a reverse engineer who noticed how the old man modifies the game state.

[–]noddwyd 1 point2 points ago

the beach glitch works for everything, not just the old man. Like I said, I used to use it for the safari zone, because fuck the safari zone.

The crazy part is figuring out to talk to the old man and then go do it. It probably happened by accident.

[–]Leetzers 6 points7 points ago

[–]Keksus_ 3 points4 points ago

They found Mew thanks to reverse engineering. They knew what they were looking and just searched for a way to find it.

[–]TheOriginalFlyingPig 1 point2 points ago

Haha yeah I figured. I highly doubted anyone would just happen to stumble upon it after incidentally carrying out the necessary steps. Still, I'm sure they were just a little awestruck when they actually came across it

[–]cortesoft 718 points719 points ago

I have never seen this GIF where there isn't a second pair of sunglasses underneath.

[–]Shadax 202 points203 points ago

How did they photoshop them out and add eyes? It looks so real!

[–]st-boost 328 points329 points ago

I have never seen this GIF without the second pair of sunglasses underneath without this as the top comment.

[–]Scuzzzy 10 points11 points ago

First time here too. It's a strange feeling. Scratched an unknown itch but makes me a little pissed at the OP at the same time.

[–]ZekeD 2 points3 points ago

He...he has eyes.

[–]UnderwaterPianos 294 points295 points ago

the first person to ever realize the towns were named after colors

[–]FireCoTTon 227 points228 points ago

Never realised that, me right now.

[–]ninjaguineapig 195 points196 points ago

[–]cwnc2008 218 points219 points ago

[–]jaxspider 76 points77 points ago

Why must you remind him of his shame?

[–]Eurospective 3 points4 points ago

Bing is actually usable for certain tasks.

[–]Callmewolverine 19 points20 points ago

Like inspiring people to make fun of you.

[–]Eurospective 4 points5 points ago

Honestly, try it for porn. It has never let me down. Easily the best search engine including dedicated porn search sites I've found.

[–]Callmewolverine 1 point2 points ago

Does it have an option to filter out paid sites from free streaming tubes? Because we need that.

[–]Eurospective 4 points5 points ago

Indirectly as when you use the video function it only gives you links it has access too and you can mouseover the clip.

[–]artacuno53 5 points6 points ago

AKA porn searching

[–]chaser902109 0 points1 point ago

Aka helping old people get to google.

[–]cwnc2008 0 points1 point ago

Would you tell your mother you use bing?

[–]ninjaguineapig 0 points1 point ago

No! My laptop is in for repairs! I'm using my grandparents' computer!

[–]cwnc2008 5 points6 points ago

Bing. Not even once.

[–]AppleSparkleJack 20 points21 points ago

Bing......

[–]BoreasBlack 105 points106 points ago

For further mindfuckery, Pallet Town.

[–]deltree711 78 points79 points ago

Hate to break it to you, but this is a pallet. That's a palette.

[–]HOWDEHPARDNER 53 points54 points ago

A misspelling may still nod to something. It's obvious what they really meant.

[–]Photographic_Eye 16 points17 points ago

mother of god... <insert mindblown.gif>

[–]N3TS3cure 12 points13 points ago

Wtf did I just see?

[–]stfnotguilty 9 points10 points ago

Dude, you owe it to yourself to watch these commercials:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=fXvtany3mSE

[–]bogartnumberone 5 points6 points ago

Hmm... The old ones were better.

[–]GigaLandShark 1 point2 points ago

I agree to disagree.

[–]Shikogo 1 point2 points ago

I agree, although the Terry Crews commercials aren't half bad. The new ones are just sad.

[–]MrMojoRisin5211 4 points5 points ago

holy shit. I knew the towns were colors but It never clicked with pallet town. that actually blew my mind.

[–]bannedINQC 2 points3 points ago

seriously???

[–]MrMojoRisin5211 0 points1 point ago

I was/am not a bright person...

[–]abigfatphoney 18 points19 points ago

The town you start in is called Pallet Town, and all the rest are colors.

Did that blow your mind or what?

[–]deltree711 9 points10 points ago

Nope. See above post.

[–]akgamestar 0 points1 point ago

I feel you brah. How did I miss this?

[–]theduckslayer 0 points1 point ago

and Pallet town is like a painters pallet

[–]jjjeahh 10 points11 points ago

pallet town

My god.....

[–]marswithrings 2 points3 points ago

the color used to overlay each town ingame is also roughly the same color as the name of the town. in yellow version, anyway, IIRC blue and red were all blue and all red overlays, respectively.

ie, viridian town looks viridian, cerulean is cerulean

[–]Repost_Guy 5 points6 points ago

side-note, the gym masters also fit the colour of the city Ex: Cerulean -> Blue -> Misty

[–]sprandel 8 points9 points ago

Ex: Vermilion -> Red -> Lt. Surge?

[–]marswithrings 9 points10 points ago

RED LIKE THE BLOOD OF HIS ENEMIES FROM THAT WAR THEY'RE ALWAYS TALKING ABOUT

[–]IthinktherforeIthink 0 points1 point ago

wahhhhh? which towns?

[–]MandrewL 1 point2 points ago

All of them except pallet in r/b/y

[–]UnderwaterPianos 0 points1 point ago

Kanto

[–]Icalasari 18 points19 points ago

Kanto: Colours

Johto: Plants

Hoenn: Does have a theme that changes based on whether they are land based cities, ocean based (e.g. MOSS DEEP, PACIFI(c)D LOG), or a combination of the two

Sinnoh: I don't think it actually has a theme

Unova: Clouds

[–]Disgruntled__Goat 7 points8 points ago

Hoenn is geographical features (burg, port, cove etc) combined with a plant or mineral.

Sinnoh has a little bit of that but it mostly just names relating to what's in the town.

[–]DaemonJerky 5 points6 points ago

They haven't been colors since Johto, man.

[–]thetacriterion 5 points6 points ago

*Kanto

Johto towns were named after plants.

[–]DaemonJerky 12 points13 points ago

Oh, you're totally right. I just thought of Goldenrod and remembered that Crayola told me that it's a color. My bad!

[–]sha742 0 points1 point ago

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goldenrod

Yeeea, I wanted to find something to prove him wrong, but there you go.

[–]DaemonJerky 0 points1 point ago

Why would you try to prove him wrong? I already admitted he was right.

[–]sha742 0 points1 point ago

Because I thought Goldenrod was only a color until now.

But I guess it makes sense. What color would Azalea be anyways.

[–]noddwyd 4 points5 points ago

Saffron is also an excellent spice. FYI.

[–]hoodie92 0 points1 point ago

The guy who came up with the names? Or literally the first person to play it?

[–]UnderwaterPianos 0 points1 point ago

The first person to realize it

[–]toumba 0 points1 point ago

so are the original main characters... Red, Green, and Blue

[–]i_rape_moms 1 point2 points ago

I knew the description / colors of each town, but the towns are named after colors?

Saffron, Celadon, Cinnabar etc...these are colors?

[–]UnderwaterPianos 1 point2 points ago

Yup, I'm pretty sure you go to a Home Depot, they'll be able to make those colors for ya

[–]alex9001 90 points91 points ago

how dumb do you have to be to train magikarp to level 20 when nobody knew gyrados existed!?

[–]UnholyDemigod 261 points262 points ago

My friend told me to do it. All he said was "it's worth it". I thought he was bullshitting just to be a cheeky prick, especially because Magikarp has a high exp requirement. Each level I'm waiting for some epic move that nobody else knows, then come 15 I get tackle. I didn't really pay any attention to stats back then; all I knew was strong and weak. After using tackle the first time, I learnt that Magikarp was weak. But I kept going. I finally hit lvl 20, and when it started evolving I had no clue what to expect. When it goes from goldfish to gargantuan blue snake, I shit bricks. Next battle, I used bite and the pokemon's trainer died from the power emanating from Gyarados' jaws. Buildings crumbled, seas churned and the earth shook. I was unstoppable.

[–]HOWDEHPARDNER 150 points151 points ago

then you ran into an electric pokemon.

[–]Ravek 34 points35 points ago

Doesn't matter, have a fucking giant fish dragon.

[–]asplashofredditsauce 7 points8 points ago

Water/Flying, 4x effective! Nooooooo

[–]PenguinPwnge 6 points7 points ago

8/10 would read again.

[–]nameless88 52 points53 points ago

Maybe you see Gyarados is the next one in the pokedex after Magikarp? Or, you see that there is an empty space there, and you are just going on pure blind optimism.

[–]Upthrust 46 points47 points ago

Or you really bonded with that dopey-looking fish. Imagine: Gyarados may have even been a disappointment for that brave poke-pioneer.

[–]noddwyd 48 points49 points ago

No, it's just that I paid $500 for that shitty pokemon, and god damnit I was going to show the world that I had not just been jipped.

[–]Logomac3 6 points7 points ago

It's more like you payed $5 for that shitty pokemon.

[–]noddwyd 0 points1 point ago

yeah yeah, yen conversion, I didn't know that back then.

[–]Taterhater540 7 points8 points ago

That guy's a real Pokéhipster; he liked Magikarp before Magikarp was cool.

[–]g2petter 9 points10 points ago

In the distant past, it was somewhat stronger than the horribly weak descendants that exist today.

From the pokédex. I also think someone in the game might have mentioned its much more powerful ancestors or something. I know I leveled it up in order to see what would happen.

[–]ShrimpScampie 8 points9 points ago

Video game logic. Weak and worthless things always become powerful if you use them long enough.

[–]skurken 7 points8 points ago

Not the warhammer in God of War. My god, that thing sucked til the very end.

[–]asplashofredditsauce 2 points3 points ago

Thank you!

[–]ThundarrtheRedditor 0 points1 point ago

I always save my starter gear just in case...

[–]razuku 3 points4 points ago

I did this. Magikarp levels fairly quickly and I was curious. A friend called me an idiot but when I hit level 15 and got tackle, I was even more intrigued so I kept going. When he evolved at 20 I shat bricks and since then, I've never had a playthrough without picking up that magikarp before Mt. Moon and beating the shit out of misty with a gyarados. Edit: a word

[–]MrMcQuone 1 point2 points ago

...or someone read those Walkthrough Guides. I've never bought a Pokémon game without one.

[–]Neo-Calypso 1 point2 points ago

To be fair, the episode of the show where they show Magikarp evolving was literally shown for the first time the day before red and blue came out in the US. So it was quite possible to know of the evolution before playing the game.

[–]Drop_the_gun 0 points1 point ago

He was like, "Wow he's evolving finally! I always wondered wha-HOLY SHIT" D:

[–]Maghook 119 points120 points ago

Her presence is distorting the space around her and it's freaking me out.

[–]IAMAVelociraptorAMA 16 points17 points ago

In case you're unaware, they late a still image in the background and then have the person moving/talking animated only, which ends up leaving distortions where her body moves as the still background changes in one part but stays the same in another.

[–]slayingomen 5 points6 points ago

How do velociraptors fap?

[–]IAMAVelociraptorAMA 18 points19 points ago

We don't.

[–]doctor_question 30 points31 points ago

Actually, I always did that. 500 isn't that much money, like 2 potions or something. Plus you get magikarp way earlier in the game (route 3 compared to... where do you get the old rod again? vermillion city?) so with a little training (stick him on the top of your party in mt moon and switch him out) you can get a gyarados by the time you get to the ss anne or earlier.

[–]monthly 12 points13 points ago

Trainer Tip of the Day.

[–]TheShuckler 1 point2 points ago

Less actually, one Potion and a Pokeball.

[–]p0x0rz 6 points7 points ago

That gif is weird...Before he takes off the glasses, he looks just like Johnny Depp. When he takes 'em off, he's Don Johnson.

[–]Knowltey 4 points5 points ago

I thought it was Jack Nicholson before the glasses removal.

[–]jenkins_009 67 points68 points ago

The best would be this three or four times, then ending in OP's gif.

[–]sweetsnowman 115 points116 points ago

Soooo... Like This?

[–]stopthemeyham 46 points47 points ago

Nono, he said 3 times, like this

[–]2muffins[!] 22 points23 points ago

Actually, I don't think I had ever seen the original prior to this because the one you posted is so widely used.

[–]sharoku 8 points9 points ago

That's the first person who found the item replication exploit.

[–]IAmCassetteKid 3 points4 points ago

This guy gets it

[–]dark621 0 points1 point ago

thats what i was expecting.

[–]BeardedAsian 25 points26 points ago

THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I HAVE SEEN HIS EYES.

[–]tehcharizard 27 points28 points ago

The first person to ever evolve his Magikarp in 1996 was probably a Japanese person who had been playing since 1995, and thus already knew about Gyarados.

Just sayin'.

[–]ZainOnyx 34 points35 points ago

Didn't release in Japan until Feb of 1996. Just sayin'

[–]tehcharizard 22 points23 points ago

Wikipedia lied to me :(

[–]dezmodez 46 points47 points ago

Looks like your high school teachers were right.

[–]Naillilb 17 points18 points ago

I have never seen this gif without the never-ending glasses.

[–]MrWillWalker 4 points5 points ago

That's the first time I've ever seen his eyes.

[–]Rampardos18 7 points8 points ago

Well, I was no idiot at 6 years. I formulated a theory that stated that magikarp evolved into gyarados based on their position in the pokédex. I tested it, and it was a triumph.

[–]generalblake 2 points3 points ago

I'm making a note here.

[–]Rampardos18 2 points3 points ago

HUGE SUCCESS
It's hard to overstate my satisfaction

[–]Spinach7 3 points4 points ago

Aperture science: we do what we must because we can

[–]michaelt4 4 points5 points ago

For the good of all of us

[–]Spinach7 3 points4 points ago

Except the ones who are dead

[–]SelcouthBadger 2 points3 points ago

But there's no sense crying over every mistake, you just keep on trying 'till you run out of cake.

[–]Spinach7 2 points3 points ago

Then the science gets done, and you make a neat gun for the people who are still alive!

[–]SelcouthBadger 2 points3 points ago

I'm not even angry... I'm being soo sincere right now.

[–]Spinach7 1 point2 points ago

Even though you broke my heart and killed me.

[–]OldSchoolNewRules 6 points7 points ago

I think the complete pokedex was available when the game came out...

[–]noddwyd 0 points1 point ago

yeah, but I didn't manage to buy one until later on.

[–]bartbart 2 points3 points ago

I did this in 1998... but I was a douchebag 11 year old with a Nintendo Power guide. I was still pretty happy though.

[–]mediaG33K 2 points3 points ago

Pants were likely shat when people saw that wondrous occurrence.

[–]HardcoreHazza 0 points1 point ago

I bought the Magikarp first time in Pokemon Red. Only after my first go through the Elite Four I learn about Gyarados.

[–]Xbett 2 points3 points ago

Its a miracle! Almost as much of an accomplishment as someone riding a bike indoors.

[–]nameless88 4 points5 points ago

There's a time and a place for everything...but not now.

[–]Kastler 1 point2 points ago

What is that gif even from haha?

[–]boobers3 2 points3 points ago

You make me sad...

It's from Field of Dreams.

[–]Kastler 0 points1 point ago

I know, I wish I knew. It's not in the youtube clip? I wanted to see it in context haha

[–]Jerken 0 points1 point ago

Miami Vice.

[–]Meem0 0 points1 point ago

This subreddit should have a rule like in /r/Gaming where all image posts have to contain something Pokémon related.

[–]iEzhik 10 points11 points ago

but that would set the circlejerk in stone :(

the entire subreddit would become "GUYS CHECK THIS LE POKEMON GEM OUT"

[–]TheShuckler 0 points1 point ago

Maybe we should have a rule against that too.

[–]TeddyR3X 0 points1 point ago

Socialist

[–]peace_off 2 points3 points ago

I bet he bought it.

[–]Mzmonyne 1 point2 points ago

This is probably true, too.

[–]alphastigma 2 points3 points ago

Honestly I wish I realized the importance of getting magicarp at Mt. Moon during my first play through

[–]cogsamurai 1 point2 points ago

He dealt with it.

[–]AgentSterling_Archer 2 points3 points ago

This was all my friends when I pulled out Rayquaza on them for the first time in link battles on Ruby. Demolished their sad little Blazikens and Swamperts. None of them thought it was worth running through the map looking for Latios and thus stumbling upon Sky Pillar.

[–]cameron432 2 points3 points ago

One of my main problems with Emerald. They made it way too easy to get a really really good pokemon. I think it was the first time they made one of the really good legendary pokemon that easy to find and catch.

[–]AgentSterling_Archer 3 points4 points ago

I don't know about you, but Rayquaza made up for the bullshit chasing we got in Crystal/Silver/Gold. Chasing 3 motherfucking dogs across the entire map and they can also run away in the first turn? Took me so long to do it legitimately, since I didn't have a computer or any kind of cheating aid.

[–]i_am_sad 1 point2 points ago

I still never caught my third one. Same for the fucking Melsprit. Melsprit is the reason I quit enjoying pokemon. That thing is paralyzed and asleep and weakened beyond belief at 1HP and I still can't fucking catch that shit. I gave up and stopped playing pokemon all together.

[–]GuitarViking 0 points1 point ago

That's what moves like Mean Look or abilities like Arena Trap are for.

[–]i_am_sad 0 points1 point ago

I trained up a zubat to a crobat trying to get mean look, but after like 50 something levels, he's still not capable of hitting first.

[–]GuitarViking 5 points6 points ago

That's weird. Crobat is almost twice as fast as Mesprit, and after paralyzing it its Speed is halved. Crobat really should be getting the first hit.

[–]i_am_sad 0 points1 point ago

IDK, it might still be a golbat. It's been a while. Regardless I worked for weeks on that fucker and lost all joy in my life because of it. I quit playing pokemon after that, although I still play the PokeMMO sometimes and have since quitting went back and replayed yellow a couple times.

[–]TeddyR3X 0 points1 point ago

On my crystal version when i was about 10, i almost had a full dex, a pretty legit team (for me 10yo level 75 was impressive) just finished catching those fuckers, my dad deletes my game for my little sister.

[–]Icalasari 1 point2 points ago

I stumbled upon the Sky Pillar by accident once and couldn't find it again for several months, wondering just what that place might have been

[–]commodore-69 1 point2 points ago

I bought that $500 Magikarp and evolved that bitch without reading anything on the Internet

[–]vadergeek 0 points1 point ago

Unless he knew what was happening for some reason.

[–]10010101 0 points1 point ago

NO

[–]Harperlarp -1 points0 points ago

This gif/title combination deserves a hearty lol.

LOL!

[–]Maota1 0 points1 point ago

That gif just doesnt look right without a second pair of sunglasses anymore

[–]sociallyawkwarddude 1 point2 points ago

Whenever I see this .gif, I think of the quotation: "My God, it's full of stars."

[–]whitelunick 0 points1 point ago

[–]ESAsher 0 points1 point ago

I knew Gyarados existed in the game, but I had no idea how to get one. I left a Magikarp with the day-care people for most of the game, and got it back maybe around level 50. I then figured what the hell and used a rare candy on it. Surprise Gyarados!

[–]KSO17O 1 point2 points ago

I think the same reaction occurred when the first Dragonair was evolved.

[–]Lairo1 5 points6 points ago

No, I think the first Dragonair evolution was this

[–]bradcah 0 points1 point ago

Wow, I never knew that wasn't Leo DiCaprio.

[–]winesti 1 point2 points ago

I literally evolved my Magikarp for the first time in Yellow yesterday.

So proud of you James. We're gonna kick some ass.

[–]420wasabisnappin 1 point2 points ago

What a rewarding experience. Get one a level 5, switch out immediately until 15 when they learn tackle, then actually use in battle until GYRADOS!

[–]kwistlemeth 1 point2 points ago

I was looking for a Gyarados in the reflection of his glasses.

[–]Onlyhereforthelaughs 0 points1 point ago

THE GLASSES CAME OFF?!

[–]smarston 0 points1 point ago

Love this!

[–]yonkomother 0 points1 point ago

I've always thought the same thing. Like the guy only raised Magikarp as a joke, but then it evolved and he was like...well...you know.

[–]chagoi 0 points1 point ago

Someone should photoshop gyrados into the glasses reflections.

[–]hopeful_toker 0 points1 point ago

I think this is the first time I've actually seen that guy take off his glasses

[–]OrangeSimply 1 point2 points ago

This happened to me after evolving my Togepi in Silver. This was when Silver first came out, EVERYBODY wanted to trade their rarest pokemon for it

[–]BeefyStevey 1 point2 points ago

THAT MAN HAS EYES UNDERNEATH HIS GLASSES!?
