Good. Then we can fire in any direction.

[–]BrownChicow 299 points300 points ago

Sounds like something Zapp Brannigan would say.

[–]Tony_AbbottPBUH 97 points98 points ago

Lieutenant General Lewis Burwell "Chesty" Puller USMC did say it, which is even better

[–]kps2012 19 points20 points ago

[–]WongFarmHand 29 points30 points ago

If we hit that bullseye, the rest of the dominoes should fall like a house of cards. Checkmate.

[–]jcpearce 109 points110 points ago

Sounds like something Patton did say.

[–]fAntom3188 189 points190 points ago

At the outbreak of the Korean War, Puller was once again assigned as commander of the 1st Marine Regiment, with which he made a landing at Inchon on September 15, 1950 and was awarded the Silver Star Medal.[7] For leadership from September 15 to November 2, he was awarded his second Legion of Merit. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross from the Army for action from November 29 to December 5 of that same year, and his fifth Navy Cross for action during December 5–10 at the Battle of Chosin Reservoir. It was during that battle when he made the famous quote, "We've been looking for the enemy for some time now. We've finally found him. We're surrounded. That simplifies things."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chesty_Puller

It was Chesty Puller

[–]Natv 28 points29 points ago

Chesty fucking Puller.

[–]gkraker04 9 points10 points ago

My grandaddy fought in the Battle of Chosin Reservoir. The only thing he said about was this: "If hell were to ever freeze over- that place- is exactly what it would be like."

[–]jcpearce 6 points7 points ago

Well played. My memory didn't serve me. My thought was of when Patton was asked if he found himself between the German and Russian armies, how would he react. I believe he said he would attack in all directions, or something of that nature, which pissed off our Russian allies, at the time. My remembrance was only similar, not exact, as yours was with "Chesty" Puller.

[–]partanimal 8 points9 points ago

Didn't he do the "We're not retreating, we're advancing from a different direction" line, too?

[–]deshki 7 points8 points ago

He saw an officer once forcing an ensign to salute him over and over, because he had forgotten to just one time. Chesty walked up and calmly reminded the officer he had to return every last salute.

[–]HNW 0 points1 point ago

That was Oliver P. Smith Link

[–]orthag 2 points3 points ago

My favorite story of him is from his time in Nicaragua. They wanted to do a bombing run, but their bombs weren't the right size for their plane. So he and another guy fashioned a makeshift bomb dropper out of a bedsheet and climb into the bomb bay of their plane and manually drop these bombs.

[–]captain_croco 3 points4 points ago

People should read his biography. Simple titled: Marine! The story of chesty puller. Or something to that affect. The man was a true fucking badass. He pretty much went anywhere in the world where people were shooting at one another.

[–]willlee52 3 points4 points ago

ctrl f chesty was not disapointed.

[–]hondamxr13 0 points1 point ago

Goodnight Chesty Puller...Wherever you are...

[–]OneAngryPanda 30 points31 points ago

History! FUCK YEAH!

[–]smokeyoulikeablunt -1 points0 points ago

no it isn't. brannigan's an idiot.

[–]ActuallyAnAlpaca 9 points10 points ago

Technically they could only fire in non-overlapping segments with angle θ=360º/(number of participants) and 0º≤φ≤180º (unless you are Zapp Brannigan)

[–]Neeblue 0 points1 point ago

Would they be considered surrounded if there were non-overlapping segments? What if there are only two participants?

[–]ActuallyAnAlpaca 2 points3 points ago

A simple explanation of being surrounded:
The radial vector of the pursued from the origin to their current position must not be able to intersect a pursuer's pathline when
r{pursued} ≤ r{pursuer}

This is a form of the equilateral velociraptors problem.

[–]RCIX 4 points5 points ago

Reminds me of this guy or this guy

[–]generic93 20 points21 points ago

nuts!

[–]Mcdoofus 15 points16 points ago

Except there's no Patton's first army to break the spawn camp on Valhalla. That damn mantis.

[–]fork_in_the_outlet 0 points1 point ago

Wasn't it armored elements of Third Army that did that?

[–]boscoist 1 point2 points ago

Patton's First Army was entirely fictional, it consisted of inflatable tanks and barracks and a few companies of comms troops to simulate traffic.

[–]merv243 1 point2 points ago

But they didn't need to be rescued by Patton!

[–]Fudge_is_1337 1 point2 points ago

If you like stuff like this, you should look up Douglas Bader. Dude crashed his plane, lost both of his legs, one above the knee, and was allowed to keep flying for the British Air Force, where he took a fair few kills before being shot down in occupied territory, escaping at least two POW camps before being sent to Colditz

[–]BattleWizzard 50 points51 points ago

Spoken like a true Spartan. Spartans never die.

[–]Dubhuir 29 points30 points ago

That's Goonies, silly.

[–]BattleWizzard 4 points5 points ago

Goonies never say die. Spartans just never do it.

Spartans are not allowed to be recorded as dead. Even in cases of confirmed death, they are listed only as MIA. This serves the dual purpose of creating a hallowed reverence for the perceived immortality of the super-soldier project, and maintaining public morale by upholding the belief that they were unstoppably capable.

[–]Srmolczyk 3 points4 points ago

That's legends silly

[–]NJDevils30 0 points1 point ago

[–]venfayth 4 points5 points ago

[–]art36 9 points10 points ago

Relevant real life badass story:

NUTS!

The most famous quote of the battle came from the 101st’s acting commander, Brigadier General Anthony McAuliffe. When confronted with a written request from German General Luttwitz for the surrender of Bastogne, his reply was one word: "NUTS!" (the commander of the 327th GIR interpreted it to the German truce party as "Go to hell!").

TL;DR American paratroopers were surrounded by Nazis. Offered to surrender. General says "Go to hell!"

[–]lolbbqstain 1 point2 points ago

Perhaps they were in the same game. Yes, that has to be it.

[–]ffflareon 98 points99 points ago

Overly Manly Man doesn't play video games.

[–]richardgrey 104 points105 points ago

[–]LoopTransmission 4 points5 points ago

Going straight to the skeletons.

[–]Asaoirc 1 point2 points ago

i used the morning star and spent about an hour killing those skeletons, and later on found out it was the wrong way...

[–]elletheking 1 point2 points ago

It ain't the wrong way - there is no such thing as the wrong way

[–]SirNoName 1 point2 points ago

Having never played dark souls, is this like, you go off the story line, you get endless waves of skeletons to blow through?
Because, if yes, I would just do that and not the storyline..

[–]gingeristjake 1 point2 points ago

From where you first begin playing the game (after the tutorial) there is a path to an area which contains various skeletons, some surprisingly large, which aren't really supposed to be fought at that level. In dark souls you are allowed to explore the area, the only real limitations being what you can kill to get past.

[–]LoopTransmission 0 points1 point ago

Me and my brother rented it and played over two hours trying to get pass those damn skeletons. When we found the best way to go, we were ridiculously overpowered.

[–]ferroh 2 points3 points ago

Only Silver Surfer.

FTFY.

[–]SoloWing1 1 point2 points ago

And I Wanna Be The Guy. And Dark Souls. And BattleToads.

your novelty account is bad and you should feel bad

[–]ffflareon 10 points11 points ago

I didn't even get to see what it said.

[–]mrpineapplehouse 3 points4 points ago

the account was 'draws things on white boards'

he got a dry erase board and a blue marker and wrote "I agree, Overly Manly Man doesnt play video games" on it. He took a picture of that, posted it to imgur, then posted a link to it

[–]ffflareon 2 points3 points ago

That's absolutely terrible.

[–]A_white_kid 1 point2 points ago

I saw something in another thread about something similar. It was I_AM_NOT_OP and he was responding as he was the OP. Someone in the thread went ''This novelty was doomed from the start'' or something like that. He simply replied with a ''ok D:''

[–]Hekkk 48 points49 points ago

Some kid knows Chesty Puller quotes? Quick!!! Put it on the internet!!

[–]findingchemo 46 points47 points ago

The quote you're thinking of is: "We're surrounded. That simplifies our problem of getting to these people and killing them."

[–]jedadkins 13 points14 points ago

there are several different quotes a long the same lines (he was surounded alot)

"They are in front of us, behind us, and we are flanked on both sides by an enemy that outnumbers us 29:1. They can't get away from us now!"

"Great. Now we can shoot at those bastards from every direction."

"We're surrounded. That simplifies our problem of getting to these people and killing them." - November 1950, during Chosin Reservoir campaig

[–]findingchemo 2 points3 points ago

He was a real life Overly Manly Man.

[–]hitlechro 4 points5 points ago

He's too busy learning his multiplication tables to memorize quotes...

[–]ducksrbetter 11 points12 points ago

Goodnight Chesty, wherever you are!

[–]Zook 10 points11 points ago

He's running another PFT.

[–]ducksrbetter 6 points7 points ago

Kill.

[–]griffer00 1 point2 points ago

"Who the fuck is Chesty?"

[–]griffer00 0 points1 point ago

I know who he is. I was just quoting a line from "The Boys of C Company."

[–]AlxHand 8 points9 points ago

Good old Chesty

[–]FuriousPorcupine 15 points16 points ago

Legend has it that after he saw a flamethrower for the first time, his only question was to ask where the bayonet was attached.

[–]Mobius01010 2 points3 points ago

Bayonet? You mean enema nozzle?

[–]docblue 0 points1 point ago

I believe that was his second question. The man really loved to stab things.

[–]walkthedog 4 points5 points ago

Communication is key.
No, seriously.
Get a mic people.

[–]Scruffy_Devil 6 points7 points ago

Good Guy OP. Edits pic while in Big Team Halo match. Gives credit to teammate's Manly Man comment.

[–]drock515 6 points7 points ago

This should be a courage wolf

[–]Freespace535 3 points4 points ago

That's surprisingly badass.

[–]SPL33NM3RCH4NT 5 points6 points ago

Yes

[–]NovusHomoSapiens -1 points0 points ago

[–]j00jy 2 points3 points ago

Sounds like Chesty Puller. The most badass Marine to ever walk the Earth. His men were surrounded in the Korean War and he says...

"They are in front of us, behind us, and we are flanked on both sides by an enemy that outnumbers us 29:1. They can't get away from us now!"

[–]asmulaabas 2 points3 points ago

Reminds me of one of the greatest quotes ever by marine general chesty puller during Korea, when told they had been surrounded on all sides, he said "we're surrounded, that simplifies our problem."

[–]miss_kitty_cat 3 points4 points ago

This is my favorite meme.

[–]gooddaysir 1 point2 points ago

They've got us right where we want them. Now we can shoot at those bastards from any direction.

[–]blandassand 1 point2 points ago

I like his confidence.

[–]TheCode555 1 point2 points ago

That's awesome.

[–]SmoresPies 1 point2 points ago

This meme is captivating...eh? eh?

[–]DomHaynie 1 point2 points ago

That just makes me want to play Halo 4...holding down Guide Button...

[–]Nethervex 0 points1 point ago

[–]ImMikey 1 point2 points ago

That was not just "some kid"

[–]tigerstorms -1 points0 points ago

Recorded and remixed or it didn't happen.

[–]stretch_nuts -1 points0 points ago

taking bets on how many time Overly Manly Man can reach the front page making the same general statement about Halo 4

[–]BF3FAN1 1 point2 points ago

Aka the son of Chesty Puller.

[–]runsoutofspace 0 points1 point ago

Reminds me of Sergeant York.

[–]ogotrice 1 point2 points ago

My friend said something similar: I pointed out that there were more people on their team and he replied, "more for us to kill."

[–]MaybeNotaTurtle 1 point2 points ago

WE HAVE THEM SURROUNDED! At least on this side.

[–]mike2928 1 point2 points ago

This actually makes me want to get the game.

[–]ichigo2393 0 points1 point ago

Perhaps the best thing I've seen all day

[–]turborowdy 1 point2 points ago

CHESTY PULLER! BETTER RECOGNIZE!

[–]RandyPhresh 1 point2 points ago

"Some kid just said this during a Big Team Battle on Halo 4" just screams overly manly dude from early 1900's

[–]ZeraskGuilda 0 points1 point ago

If I'm not mistaken, a fella in the 101st Airborne, E Company, had said this during the Battle of the Bulge in WWII.

It has been stated that a Mr. "Chesty" Puller had said this during the Korean war. Mayhap it is from them, he drew his inspiration?

EDIT : "Fork_in_the_outlet" beat me to the punch. Good show.

[–]MeatyRhombus 0 points1 point ago

Now you're just making me sad that I don't have Halo 4 :(

[–]Hooties_Blowfish 0 points1 point ago

I pictured this being said in a British accent for some reason.

[–]nusmesa 0 points1 point ago

AIRBORNE! We're meant to be surrounded!

[–]No_Email_No_Password 0 points1 point ago

[–]HideousClub 1 point2 points ago

[–]MadScientist14159 1 point2 points ago

There are 5 of you and 1 of me. Therefore I'm five times more likely to hit my target than you are. Therefore I have the advantage. - Pratchett

[–]Psychotic_Puffin 0 points1 point ago

One of the few posts I literally laughed at. I love Halo.

[–]dimeslime1991 0 points1 point ago

I posted this 6 hours before you did

[–]megustabaconandeggs 1 point2 points ago

There I was; my back against the wall, knee deep in plasma grenade pins, expended magazines and brass casings. The Covenant forces were bearing down on me and all I had was my Spartan army knife and a can opener...was I scared? Yes, I was sacred.

I was scared one of them would get away.

[–]abdomino 1 point2 points ago

That sounds a lot like what Sergeant Avery Johnson did.

The group he was in was completely wiped out in a battle with the Covenant, and he came across a crate of Plasma Grenades. He proceeded to use them on said purple bastards. It was put forward for a while that the radiation the things gave him was the reason he was immune to the Flood, and therefore was one of only a few that made it off of Halo (04, I think? It was the one in the first game).

In terms of badassery, many consider him to be one of the only people who have/had the capability to beat the shit out of Master Chief.

[–]confuzedcanuck 1 point2 points ago

On Ragnarok I'll bet.

[–]Banes296 1 point2 points ago

We're ODST, we're supposed to be surrounded

[–]schooluseguy 0 points1 point ago

No shit, I've won Halo matches in the past with me and another guy after our entire team left the game.

It was a big team match, just a regular one.

That guy and I went from losing and outgunned, to winning the match and playing the best damn game I've ever had in my life.

[–]geos121 1 point2 points ago

So...I was playing Halo 4 yesterday and I said this, but it wasn't btb...so I am not the man you are talking about, and for that I am sorry.

[–]Bacdizzle 0 points1 point ago

r/halo would like this

[–]flying_asses -1 points0 points ago

Chesty puller sais that In Vietnam

[–]ArabRedditor 0 points1 point ago

This made me laugh pretty hard, just thinking about an arrogant 5 year old saying this.

[–]OniTan 0 points1 point ago

You're on death's ground now.

[–]reborn8u 0 points1 point ago

Is BTB ranked in H4?

I loved H2 BTB, was amazing. They ruined it in H3 because it was not ranked, and they put a retarded amount of weapons that murdered vehicles ridiculously easily (missile pods, spartan laser ect) at least in H2 you could dodge rockets and they were placed in positions you had to fight for to get them.

[–]blaghart 2 points3 points ago

Well ragnarok (the remake of valhalla, quite literally except for a few more vehicles) has shitloads of vehicles, shitloads of ways to kill them, but they respawn fast and whatever team has the most vehicles wins from my experience so far.

[–]GameEagle 0 points1 point ago

It's actually whatever team maintains control of the hill that wins normally. It was the same in H3.

[–]blaghart 3 points4 points ago

Interesting, this has not been my experience. Most of the action is taking place along the fringes, with a heavy focus around the turret and the pelican. Mantises become relatively easy to board when they try to navigate the rocks on the hill, which means that the team has better luck flanking rather than going for hill control.

Again though this is just my experience. I also noticed that most of the time vehicles were defeated by PPs and grenades/boarding rather than splazers, rockets, or other anti vehicle methods. This was counter to what happened from my experience in H3, where the splazer, rockets, and sniper rifle were key in fending off banshees, hogs and scorpions.

[–]Pandabarrel 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, boarding with grenades is the more common way now, though a good mantis pilot will be paying enough attention to stomp the ground when anyone tries.

[–]blaghart 0 points1 point ago

Dude the wind up on that thing is crazy...also I've been getting weird buggy/lag where I'll stomp someone in front of me and it won't damage them they'll lag jump behind the legs.

[–]casos92 -1 points0 points ago

The ranking system is based on EXP earned not skill, but yeah, experience earned in BTB will increase your rank.
