I too saw the featured picture on Wikipedia clicked on rust and saw this same picture.

[–]crumbschief 18 points19 points ago

But... but he took the time to copy pasta to imgur. That's worth something right?

[–]MisuCake 5 points6 points ago

You don't know the effort it takes to do that.

[–]teppei01 37 points38 points ago

Also what happens when you eat bad Chinese food

[–]DDerpDurp 193 points194 points ago

False. That's what happens when a water main breaks.

Water pipes are made from copper, copper doesn't rust.

[–]jpbordeaux87 117 points118 points ago

I am a plumber. This happens after your galvanized water lines have been shut off and drained. The pipes rust, loosen and when you turn it back on it carries it to all your fixtures. It is a bitches to get off your hands one it stains them.

[–]Cane_Skretteburg 28 points29 points ago

this man is correct.. ref.- i too am a plumber

[–]Secrethat 30 points31 points ago

I've been a customer of a plumber and I can confirm that plumbers are 100% right all the time and they charge fair prices for their services..

[–]MiniRuckus 16 points17 points ago

Nice try, professional plumber.

[–]MrFlagg 3 points4 points ago

i am not a plumber but i have worked in a lot of old house/barns in my life.

its true.

[–]K-tel 10 points11 points ago

I am not a plumber, nor had the privilege to learn plumberly skills, but I also concur with the aforementioned plumbing knowledge.

[–]Pxtl 7 points8 points ago

Yeah, I live in an area of century homes where a lot of the water mains are having work done on them (including my house) and we keep getting days where the water will have a nice iron-oxide-orange tinge for a bit. Seems to come and go.

[–]peteygrizz 5 points6 points ago

This happened to me when my well's water pump quit. I was in the shower when suddenly, RUST! It's a bitch to get out of blond hair.

[–]mywifeisaninja 65 points66 points ago

Depending on the age of the house, might not be true.

[–]Tech_Sith 22 points23 points ago

If the house is new enough, the water lines will be PEX. It's crosslinked polyethylene, and reacts with basically nothing.

[–]Tw1tchy3y3 5 points6 points ago

And lots easier to use in my opinion!

[–]Tech_Sith 6 points7 points ago

I agree. It's also less expensive and has practically no scrap value, so it doesn't get stolen.

[–]darkscout 3 points4 points ago

It won't keep them from searching for copper. "Well the basement, living room, and kitchen didn't have copper. But surely the upstairs bathroom needs torn apart, just in case".

[–]Gigavoyant 3 points4 points ago

I learned the hard way that 1" PEX != 1" PVC.

[–]Spyhop 3 points4 points ago

Our house is PEX. Frigging awesome stuff, especially if you're faced with making a repair. So easy.

[–]ptgkbgte 25 points26 points ago

My house was built in the late 60's it has galvanized pipes.

[–]Ididerus 22 points23 points ago

My house was built in the 3rd century BCE, I use hand-carved wooden pipes, clay is really expensive and I'm not worried about resale value. Who's got salt for luxuries like that?

[–]Commode 21 points22 points ago

so was mine. I have cast iron pipes. they are getting cracked and need replaced

[–]lisabadcat 35 points36 points ago

Nothing but the finest lead pipes for me!

[–]Roaning 20 points21 points ago

Asbestos water pipes are more fire resistant.

[–]grahamvinyl 6 points7 points ago

You're thinking of your drain pipes. Not pressure plumbing.

[–]ObeseMoreece 5 points6 points ago

No sensible builder would ever make iron piping in a house (without protection via galvanisation or other electrochemical methods). Even Medeival builders wouldn't.

[–]BFofBobbieluvsya 7 points8 points ago

Nah, but early North American settlers aren't sensible builders.

And by 'early', I mean upto about 40 years ago around these parts.

[–]clobberfella 17 points18 points ago

Rust is specifically Iron oxide. Most pipes do not "Rust" unless they are untreated steel or cast iron pipes. Cast iron was often used as the cheaper alternative prior to PVC piping.

Copper does actually corrode, it just corrodes very quickly into a thin patina layer on the interior of the pipe that protects the piping from further damage and corrosion.

I do agree, however, that OPs picture is likely from a broken water main and not from rusty pipes.

[–]marshkillz 8 points9 points ago

Your statement is incorrect for those running on a private well.

We have a private well and this is what the water looks like after shocking the well, or for a short period after changing the mainline filter.

[–]DDerpDurp 3 points4 points ago

Touche, I have had no experience with Wells. Today I learned.

[–]thebreno123p 21 points22 points ago

You get chocolate milk?

[–]MR_WITTY_RESPONSE 9 points10 points ago

No, you get Yoohoo!

[–]mwkenned 50 points51 points ago

Bathtub girl.

[–]KB310 10 points11 points ago

The image that single handedly robbed me of my innocence...

[–]MR_WITTY_RESPONSE 21 points22 points ago

NO, NEVER BRING THIS UP AGAIN

[–]Killgraft 8 points9 points ago

First thing I thought of as well. It's like Internet PTSD.

What happens when you eat too much Taco Bell.

[–]moopie 3 points4 points ago

Bundy iced tea.

[–]yippy_tor 3 points4 points ago

[–]zelleie 2 points3 points ago

This could also be a symptom of turbidity caused by an old hot water heater. Usually when you change the heating element.

[–]drays 0 points1 point ago

Um, a lot more likely to be from your rusting hot water tank.

While there are steel pipes kicking around north America, I've never seen or heard of them causing that much rust.

Journeyman plumber here by the way.

"If it's brown drink it down, if it's black send it back." Homer Simpson

[–]karlomac 2 points3 points ago

Where did Tubgirl go?

[–]DGSPJS 1 point2 points ago

This is what happens when someone hides a corpse in your water heater.

[–]johnnyarms 1 point2 points ago

usually I use the term 'anal faucet' to graphically describe my diarrhea to friends and family, but after seeing this, I might finally have to put the term to rest.

[–]Joao_Platypus 1 point2 points ago

that's what happens if i drink a pot of coffee in the morning without having breakfast

[–]SourCreamWater -1 points0 points ago

This is usually what happens after Taco Bell for me

[–]john_cockstosten 0 points1 point ago

Combined with LSD you get this.

"The Tingler" starring Vincent Price, 1959

[–]0kazak1 0 points1 point ago

You, forget the part about not turning your water on for period of time.

There only two major cases I can think of where you would get dark water: -Broken pipe way upstream -Haven't turned on pipe for a long time so the rust settles.

[–]YoureMyBoyBloo 0 points1 point ago

Your pipes are fine, you have just angered the blood god.

[–]DocHoldiay 1 point2 points ago

already knew it from breaking bad

[–]HomelessBro69 1 point2 points ago

That's disgusting. I'm a Pepsi guy.

[–]stopthiscouch 0 points1 point ago

or when they open up a hydrant down the street to clear it out. happens about once a year here... it's just everything got stirred up for a bit. give it time... and don't run your hot water (you don't want it in your tank).

[–]woznak 0 points1 point ago

I can smell the rust right now...

Chocolate Milk Bath!!!! Awesome!!!!

[–]GoldenWaffles 0 points1 point ago

I had something similar happen to me before, except this was in a rarely used university lab...scared the shit out of me, I didn't know if it was rust or some nasty ass chemical that would burn my skin off.

[–]HeadCrusher3000 1 point2 points ago

Also happens when an evil sludge is flowing through out the city because of the manifestation of negative energy from too many assholes. Call the ghostbusters

[–]edbgon 0 points1 point ago

I remember going to Russia in some old hotels in St. Petersburg and Moscow and being told to expect the water to be brown and let it run for a while before just giving up and washing in the brown anyway.

[–]naewpaks 0 points1 point ago

Is the brown because of the poop or the rust? cause ewwwwwww

[–]M7600 0 points1 point ago

Shhhh!! Tubgirl was here. Keep your eyes open.

[–]dedmete 0 points1 point ago

This used to happen in our house whenever the fire dept. would turn on the fire hydrant (usually a couple times a year) that was across the street from our house. It freaked me out the first time it happened. I was getting ready to take a shower.

The floors were wet and every time we went past that floor in the elevator, the elevator would shake. When I woke up one morning and turned on the bath, the water came out with that colour.
