Jon Stewart did a great piece on the ridiculous nature of the reporting on legalization by the media Link

Edit: Mr. Stewart is a Jonathan

[–]ohsnapitspat 53 points54 points ago

Are you guys all potted up on weed?

[–]staticgirl 3 points4 points ago

Weeded on pot.

[–]vendetta2115 9 points10 points ago

Hashed on bongers.

[–]vinyl_party 1 point2 points ago

Bangers and mash

[–]gammarayzzz 0 points1 point ago

Reefed on weeders.

[–]highwayrobber 5 points6 points ago

no. we're just stoned on pot

[–]NoCowLevel 43 points44 points ago

I can't stand any piece of media coverage of drug news because of all the insufferably obnoxious puns (and dissemination of inaccurate information, of course...).

[–]thesorrow312 48 points49 points ago

Its their purposeful way of delegitimizing the activism of getting weed legalized.

Watch Noam Chomsky's "Manufacturing Consent".

[–]blue-dream 54 points55 points ago

I think it would be less irritating if it weren't so painfully obvious.

It's all just a big joke isn't it? Har Har Har those pot heads sure do love bong rips. Guess our country's just gone crazy if all we care about is legalizing drugs for those stonerrrrsssss. Right guys?!

But it really, truly, pisses me off that grown adults can't have a rational, thoughtful, and common sense conversation about a prohibition law that's responsible for the deaths of tens of thousands of our neighbors to the South and the ruining of hundreds of thousands of lives behind bars here domestically; without denigrating or demeaning the issue with mockery.

Whatever. Live free and prosper Washington and Colorado.

[–]brazilliandanny 11 points12 points ago

Yup even Obama laughed off the question when asked durring the 2008 election.

Im sorry I don't find a prohibition that locks up thousands of innocent people, makes gangsters millions of dollars, and prevents sick people from the treatment they need all that funny.

[–]thesorrow312 18 points19 points ago

Yes exactly. The philosophy here is to not even discuss the philosophy behind legalization, the pros and cons, the population - state relationship and what we should and should not be allowed to do in our own privacy as responsible adults, their strategy is genius - to just laugh it off, as if it isn't a topic worthy of a serious discussion.

And you know what, the older generation watching will be right with that - "haha weed legalized? Pfft.. these damn potheads lol. Idiots, they should get jobs and be productive slaves to capitalism like we are".

[–]syncretic 3 points4 points ago

The thing about the older generation is that they are old and will die soon.

[–]friedsushi87 0 points1 point ago

Laugh it off.

That's what they did to Ron Paul. Ignored him, lied about him, and laughed all the way to the election...

[–]thesorrow312 0 points1 point ago

Yeah but Paul is a right libertarian. Even I laugh that off.

[–]cannabuddy 0 points1 point ago

Agreed with all of the above.... but you said this and I couldn't help but laugh at the double meaning:

a prohibition law that's responsible for ... ruining of hundreds of thousands of lives behind bars here domestically

I like comparing alcohol to cannabis

[–]gumpythegreat 0 points1 point ago

That is somewhat true, but at the same time, no one would laugh if it were talking about crystal meth or heroine. The fact that people can joke about it is a good sign that people aren't as opposed to it as some might think.

[–]onesound 0 points1 point ago

Just do yourself a favor and read it.

[–]well_golly 1 point2 points ago

You are exactly right. Chomsky's book fits this situation like a glove. The media has turned the idea of people being imprisoned by the thousands (imprisoned over virtually nothing), into a great big: "Hee-hee-hee 'Mary J'! ".

Imprisonment of human beings by the thousands ... lives ruined ... jobs and homes lost ... family break ups - and it's all just a silly joke as long as the people who bring us the news keep snickering. Taxpayers foot the bill for the fiasco as they snicker along with the imbeciles on TV.

[–]Bungo99 0 points1 point ago

Came here to say this. Uptokes for you.

[–]YHofSuburbia 21 points22 points ago

...You say you agree with him for not liking obnoxious puns... and then you say "uptoke."

Come on man

[–]Bungo99 7 points8 points ago

Alright, alright I fucked up

[–]Fahrnbach 3 points4 points ago

Dude. We're on r/trees. Of course you are going to get an uptoke. The same normal friendliness should be extended. Don't downvote because he offered to agree....

[–]Le-Captain-Obvious 2 points3 points ago

I agree with this guy. Please don't senselessly downvote on /r/trees. This post probably just made it to the high enough part of the front page where the hivemind got a kick at the comments section.

[–]lkjhgfdsasdfghjkl 28 points29 points ago

I saw that. Disclaimer: I love The Daily Show. Personally I think the coverage in the mainstream media really isn't bad at all from the perspective of people who want it legalized. I'm pleasantly surprised that even Fox News just seems to make jokes about it rather than talk about how it's going to ruin the country. Sure, it would be nice if they would do a serious piece on the very real implications of criminalizing possession of cannabis every once in a while, but it could really be a lot worse.

I'm still in shock that it's [kind of] legal in [certain parts of] this country. The fact that that happened, and that the state officials in both states (even those who didn't necessarily seem to be totally in favor of legalization, like the Colorado governor) are completely following through with it, and that nobody (save for probably a few crazies, who will always be out there whenever anything happens ever) really seems to be reacting in a strongly negative way, is really pretty incredible to me.

[–]Taterhater540 11 points12 points ago

Thank you, this is what I came to say.

They can belittle it all they want, but I think that the actions of the people in those states will speak for themselves. No mass riots from newfound meth addicts yet? I'd say we're rocking along pretty well.

[–]justinh_tx 5 points6 points ago

I'm pleasantly surprised that even Fox News just seems to make jokes about it rather than talk about how it's going to ruin the country.

The reason they are making jokes is because as long as they can make it seem like a joke, the millions who are spoon-fed their "news" by Fox News won't take it seriously.

[–]slack90 0 points1 point ago

Which makes you wonder which is more dangerous to the movement. Making it a joke that they can't take seriously, or making it serious so you get people picketing saying its ruining the country and lobbying for its re-crimalization.

[–]justinh_tx 1 point2 points ago

They did take it seriously... that failed, and now they've changed tack.

[–]sloppypoptart 13 points14 points ago

fuck that dude they interviewed on the street. I just wanna punch that guy in the face.

[–]kingebeneezer 10 points11 points ago

That look that girl gives him is just like I'm smoking all your weed but yeah i'm not fucking you tonight

[–]thesorrow312 4 points5 points ago

I'm GONNA SMOKE A LOTTA WEED TONIGHT WOOOOOOOOOOOO

Don't hate bro. His jimmies remain unrustled.

EDIT: Just found out about Firefox's "Modify Headers" plugin. Problem solved - I am now a true American.

[–]SkinnyHusky 0 points1 point ago

It discussed how the media doesn't want to have a real conversation about the issue and instead makes marijuana jokes/puns instead.

[–]0tus 4 points5 points ago

Jon Stewart.

[–]staticgirl 5 points6 points ago

*Jonathan Stuart Leibowitz

[–]seancolorado 4 points5 points ago

I actually think there is a positive side as well to the fact that the media is laughing it off (in the long-run.) It shows that nobody thinks marijuana is a dangerous and serious threat and that has to bode well for the future coast to coast

[–]brianwholivesnearby 0 points1 point ago

in the bong run

[–]staticgirl 2 points3 points ago

Smoking? Is that like burning something? Making it smoke? What is a drugs?

[–]brianwholivesnearby 1 point2 points ago

you put them into drug cigarettes

[–]Bumgill 2 points3 points ago

It's kind of disgusting that this was among the more serious coverage the legalization in CO and WA has received.

[–]Peezy 0 points1 point ago

those dick licking lips

[–]essdoubleU 50 points51 points ago

That's actually pretty cool that they are looking more toward ending marijuana prohibition, rather than having the headline saying something against it, or questioning this new approach. I'm glad the headline says "Will other states 'juana join in?" rather then, "Is weed really what we need?" or some shit like that.. Just shows that public opinion has seriously reconsidered it's options and this is only the beginning of the end. The hardest part is over. With these two states legalizing, it will not only show a good example, but will sway public opinion more than it ever has before. This is awesome news and I hope they keep these puns that actually glorify the idea of legalizing.

[–]RyneDeCap 17 points18 points ago

Yeah puns are fine but the problem is that no news network will really give it a serious look and a serious story. They aren't saying many negative things, but they're not really saying anything positive either, or even just simply giving it a critical look. Everyone just sort of shrugs or laughs it off. It's just bad reporting.

[–]cwnc2008 12 points13 points ago

They're just uncomfortable about it right now. Give them time.

[–]greg2367 19 points20 points ago

they are professional journalists. this is not about 'comfort' it's about being objectively bad at your job.

[–]cwnc2008 18 points19 points ago

It's not just the journalists who are uncomfortable - it's their audience. Everyone's trying to figure out how to break the ice on something that has been taboo longer than most people have been alive.

[–]seancolorado 3 points4 points ago

Yep. We humans gotta dip our toes in the water for a long, long time to get used to something but on a grander scale this is wonderful progress. How many countries have made this step? It's good to help further pave the path

[–]Vindalfr 2 points3 points ago

Sidenote: The fact that they have to cater to an audience just goes to show that they are not news. Journalism is supposed to be a fact based narrative, any asshole can make a "lol stoners" joke.

[–]greg2367 -2 points-1 points ago

um, lolwut? what does that have to do with this? also, how does FILLING their news with terrible puns make it less awkward?

[–]cwnc2008 4 points5 points ago

It does make it less awkward... just not for you. Most people are very uncomfortable about marijuana, and stupid jokes help them lighten up about it.

[–]greg2367 2 points3 points ago

oh, hmm. i guess i could see it :P

[–]pineapplemaster 1 point2 points ago

Mainstream journalism today =! journalism.

[–]yum42 0 points1 point ago

Just shows how unimportant weed really is and how little interest society as a whole has in prohibition.

[–]essdoubleU 0 points1 point ago

Again, It's better that they aren't giving it a positive or negative side. I thought Reddit hated news with bias? I really think this is the most positive approach they could have had on the subject.

[–]Bungo99 11 points12 points ago

I think they could give it a positive image without the obnoxious puns, but I get your point.

[–]garesnap 4 points5 points ago

It's obnoxious? I thought it was funny, but not obnoxious...

[–]littlenooby 0 points1 point ago

I find it obnoxious because they're belittling the issue with the puns.

[–]garesnap 0 points1 point ago

I feel like they aren't belittling the issue, and the pun just kind of lightens people up on the matter. Some(MANY) people are scared of cannabis(especially legalization), the government has lied to us for years and years about it. Perhaps they were just trying to add a tiny bit of comic relief to the title, but i don't think they were trying to belittle the issue, the main text clearly states what's going on.

[–]essdoubleU 0 points1 point ago

Well wouldn't that be pretty biased if they only gave it a positive or negative outlook? I think it's fine the way it is. I don't know about you, but I hate news with bias, from ether side.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]Bungo99 0 points1 point ago

I suppose so, I changed my mind. The puns are fine they make the story more accessible and easier for people to get into without possibly scaring them.

[–]Affe83 0 points1 point ago

This. Besides, once some figures actually start to float in as far as taxes, crime rates, etc., I'm thinking the media will either be surprised or ignoring the statistics.

[–]Mhill08 0 points1 point ago

It's true, that actual statistics for what is happening right now don't exist - but OTHER statistics do exist. It's not like they're operating under a complete lack of scientific research and evidence regarding cannabis or anything. They could be using those. But as you said, they tend to ignore statistics.

[–]ineedateam1 -1 points0 points ago

WAIT WUT? LINK TO A CLIP?

[–]JBEHAR11 9 points10 points ago

i just find it disappointing that "journalists" have decided to make light of this issue and have all implicitly decided to joke with the reporting. I wonder if newspapers in the 40s had these kind of jokes about prohibition and the many crime related deaths that were the result of that experiment. Oh wait...Mexican journalists get murdered if they try to report on the cartels. insert any weed pun, it doesnt even matter anymore.

[–]seeingeyehamster 34 points35 points ago

ok, that's actually pretty fucking hilarious.

[–]BDaught 0 points1 point ago

`juana

[–]godlesspinko 9 points10 points ago

Maybe I'm a little vain here, but I gotta ask why does Colorado always get first billing over Washington on this issue?

We both legalized at the same time, but Washington has a larger population, raised 3x as much money as Colorado to get it passed, and it passed with a slightly larger majority.

I'm suspecting that Colorado just has more double entendres to offer: Rocky Mountain High, Denver is the Mile High city etc.

EDIT: Stoned grammar corrections

EDIT 2: Everyone has come up with some great explanations, but personally I believe it has to do with Colorado having more open vowel sounds, making a more smoothly sounding headline. Regardless, if you work in journalism and cover this issue, can you throw Washngton a bone every once in awhile and simply switch the order? We already have to deal with the Washington D.C. confusion, getting kind of a complex over here!

[–]Candiru 5 points6 points ago

because it's closer to new york

[–]pocketknifeMT -1 points0 points ago

It's tourism industry is probably an order of magntude greater than washington's, thanks to skiing and such.

This could be part of it.

[–]godlesspinko 4 points5 points ago

Washington makes 15.2 billion in tourism revenue on average

Colorado made 9.4 billion in tourism revenue last year.

Washington not only has skiiing, we have two mountain ranges, a coast line, a temperate rain forest, and Puget Sound, which is a haven for whales, giant octopus, and a booming diving industry. Seattle ranks 21st for most visited in the US, while Denver is 25th according to Forbes.

Nice try though, Coloradoan.

[–]pocketknifeMT 3 points4 points ago

I stand corrected. Clearly, industry size has nothing to do with it.

[–]--Petrichor-- 0 points1 point ago

Alphabetical?

[–]soFuckingRad 2 points3 points ago

Washington has stricter impositions such as controversial road-side drug testing policies and not allowing personal cultivation. Being able to grow up to 6 plants seems "more legal" than still not being able to grow cannabis. Of course, WA has still made amazing strides and should still be recognized as a role-model for other states.

[–]elusiveinhouston 3 points4 points ago

You raise a good question. Perhaps it's just because Colorado already has a reputation for weed smoking? Not sure..

[–]MacroSolid 1 point2 points ago

IIRC Colorado was called first, that may also be a reason.

[–]godlesspinko 4 points5 points ago

I feel like we're second class citizens on the West Coast here simply because of the time difference.

[–]zigzulu 1 point2 points ago

From what I read, it seems like the Colorado referendum/proposition/amendment is more lenient than Washington's. Also Colorado is located more in the center of the country, so it's an easier trip for more people.

[–]step1 1 point2 points ago

I think there are possibly several factors based upon some light research.

  1. Colorado is mountain time and Washington is pacific time. I believe that this alone is the reason, but following this are some others.

  2. Colorado closes polls at 7 pm, and thus, begins counting at 7:01 pm. From what I can tell, even though Washington state only has mail-in ballots, they do not begin counting the ballots until 7 or 8 pm pacific time.

  3. According to this article, Washington state had the slowest count of all the states.

  4. Colorado's population is about 2 million less than Washington's population, making counting faster.

There might be some info out there on when each ballot initiative was started as well. I'm guessing Colorado's was first, but who knows (someone else check this, I gotta work).

[–]anonymous_troll 6 points7 points ago

It's better than the outright disrespectful stuff said on morning shows the day after.

[–]reindeer73 1 point2 points ago

Carl Azuz must have gotten into the adult news station again.

[–]SirCicero 1 point2 points ago

Came here for this! Love Carl's puns, my students think I am such a loser when I get all fired up about them.

[–]rathballs 2 points3 points ago

uuggh that's just painful

[–]OneCello 0 points1 point ago

Oh, reef-her alone.

[–]RaamJustice 2 points3 points ago

The Puns. IS THERE NO END?! Its like their little inside game and whoever makes another gets 5 bucks or a joint.. either way, really?

[–]micromonas 1 point2 points ago

are you talking about cnn, or reddit? Arguably applies to both

[–]Arcoss 5 points6 points ago

It's a joint operation.

[–]MysterVaper 4 points5 points ago

This stigma is really pissing me off. I've grown up in a weed loving household and no one comes close to acting like many "stoners" do in comedy movies.

Do reporters and the rest of the media not understand that comedy is an extreme exaggeration of the very short time of being stoned, stretched across days, weeks, months?

Sativa was helping me focus and pass my exams before Adderall was even a twinkle in its father's eye. I now have two degrees and a successful business, my family is pretty much in the same boat and they've all smoked... copiously. We aren't getting the SpaceX Dragon capsule to the ISS but our careers and lifestyles are FAR from any depiction in a comedy movie.

Treat this issue with the respect it deserves. Marijuana legalization strikes at the heart of our unjust justice system and helps keep minorities from being imprisoned on, literally, a chumped-up charge that has been perpetuated since the time of Jim Crow Law's. (BTW, that is how you use "literally")

Are drinkers stupid for getting drunk? That is the message this stigma enforces on marijuana users and it is a hellacious deterrent from advancements on the issue.

When you see it or hear it, don't laugh, don't giggle... get PISSED. You should be. They are branding your lifestyle and mocking it.

[–]conorclearshot 0 points1 point ago

What business are you in?

[–]MysterVaper 2 points3 points ago

Electronic cigarettes and vaporizers. I'm a strong advocate of the safety and efficacy of vaporization vs. burning.

[–]conorclearshot 0 points1 point ago

I recently ordered a Ploom PAX, just waiting to receive it. I have a MFLB but wanted to try something new. How's business?

[–]emjayar08 0 points1 point ago

Who in /r/trees would down vote this??

[–]Blacksin01 0 points1 point ago

Well said. It does make me mad as well because I take it seriously and many people think its a joke. After $5000, a night in jail, and 2 years of probation for just weed, you wouldn't be laughing either.

[–]LuperFlipino 0 points1 point ago

Whoa, whoa, whoa it's like only Reddit that can use shitty puns.

  • Stage 1: Strict prohibition with no chance of media ever siding with cannabis legalization nor the government allowing the medicinal use of cannabis. Popular opinion: Dangerous.

  • Stage 2: Legalization for medicinal/recreational use , media coverage making jokes and puns rather than being strictly against it and actually giving it some decent coverage. States get closer and closer to legalizing it everywhere. Popular opinion: Legalize it.

  • Stage 3: ?

Is this a nationally televised news program...or the New York Post?

[–]aaalexxx 0 points1 point ago

[–]thundercleese2012 0 points1 point ago

The number of puns is way too high, I don't what this stems from but they need to nip it in the bud.

[–]thechemEnt 0 points1 point ago

Some headline writer had a drawer full of punny headlines for when this day came.

[–]TibEco 0 points1 point ago

WE(ed) get it already!

[–]robodrew 1 point2 points ago

Here's what I want to know: if weed is so dangerous and deadly that it is illegal and people go to prison all the time for having or selling it, why is it such a joke to newscasters? Why does it always get them giggling like 5th grade school girls? If it's really so dangerous it should be taken seriously. They are acting like it's a funny, harmless thing. Which it is! And yet it's illegal. Where is the discussion about that incredible distortion of reality?

[–]redground83 0 points1 point ago

This is a good point and is why I actually think the dumb jokes are a positive thing. They wouldn't be joking and laughing about legalizing meth or heroin. When the home audience sees the news making light of a drug being legalized, rather than a bunch of fear mongering, maybe they will come a little closer to realizing legal weed isn't such a big deal as they thought it was. It brings it closer to mainstream acceptance.

lol yeah its probly for the best if they stop but i like the light hearted attitude towards

[–]drtriangle 0 points1 point ago

[–]MrKerub 0 points1 point ago

I'm at [5] and it took me 10 minutes to understand the joke :-(

[–]Popcom 0 points1 point ago

I hope other states wait and see the + effects of legalization before going forward with their own legislation. Then I hope Canada watches and learns. I live in Alberta and you wouldn't believe the ignorance of our official stance/info on weed

[–]friskydingo920 0 points1 point ago

Ok you gotta admit, that was pretty good

[–]TheWhyteMaN 0 points1 point ago

Please good Sirs! We call it Cannabis.

News media idiots who can't take the issue seriously. hey, it's why I don't watch the msm. They're idiots, FOR idiots. Out of touch with the issues, out of touch with the world and hence their stupid looks of surprise and incredulity when the obvious happens.

[–]Crazybonbon 0 points1 point ago

God, them and their fancy electronics.
