The scenes in the opening credits are actually a psychological landscape that represents Will's sense of the world around him.

[–]pwarz00 190 points191 points ago

at least the couple of guys, who were up to no good were accurate.

[–]pizzlewizzle 211 points212 points ago

thanks. there was a black guy right behind me at work when I opened that gif.

[–]MickeyWallace 67 points68 points ago

fuck that over the shoulder, screen gawker!

[–]flowstoneknight 102 points103 points ago

Whoa now, at least buy him a drink first.

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points ago

Oh no, and black people don't understand humor or sarcasm!

[–]PeepingUnicorn 18 points19 points ago

I like how there is two left hands.

[–]DrDreampop 54 points55 points ago

The best part is the floating KFC bucket. It's bobbing up and down in the air as if it's being supported by magic....black magic.

[–]stb14808 6 points7 points ago

That's observant!

[–]Jabberminor 7 points8 points ago

Oh why did I laugh at that...damn you brain!

[–]moxiedrinker82 7 points8 points ago

How could you not?

[–]boot2skull 5 points6 points ago

I miss Wondershowzen.

[–]apextek 31 points32 points ago

or a reference to his previous music vids

[–]MickeyWallace 2 points3 points ago

thanks, i feel like an ancient artifact now :(

[–]CodyModo 2 points3 points ago

This is what my generation missed?

[–]iggzy 4 points5 points ago

He raps happy

[–]CodyModo 1 point2 points ago

Happy casual.

[–]rabbitlion 0 points1 point ago

24 years and he haven't changed a bit.

[–]ravibkjoshi 0 points1 point ago

Thank you comment man!

[–]HittingSmoke[!] 26 points27 points ago

Oh god, this isn't a thing now, is it? Please don't let this be a thing now...

[–]Doesnt_Suck 13 points14 points ago

It's so gonna be a thing now.

[–]AwesomeAtheist_17 2 points3 points ago

That's so fetch

[–]The_True_Zecret 1244 points1245 points ago

It's his story representation of his mother. An over-exaggeration to show how he saw her at that moment, acting like a worried/overbearing old lady making him move.

[–]fforw 463 points464 points ago

It is also to suspect that there was more than "one little fight" that caused his move, he is an unreliable narrator.

[–]AnarchistEmu 387 points388 points ago

yes but "i smoked a load of crack and shot a guy" is harder to fit into a rhyme

[–]fforw 213 points214 points ago

Yeah, but that is not what happened..

edit: There's no indication of a rehab / detox stay.. We get to know him throughout the show.. He's basically a good kid, a loudmouth, someone that acts tougher than he his.

So what happened? My guess would be that he indeed got into trouble with a gang, but that trouble was of course much more serious than one little fight. It was a series of escalating violent encounters that ended in one too severe to be hid from his mom.

So now here he is, in Bel Air, got ass whooped badly and tells us his version of the story, one that is a lot funnier and less humiliating for him.

[–]Clockian 207 points208 points ago

Actually, there was an episode where he goes back to Philly to see his mother and confronts the guy he got in his "one little fight" with, who is now a children's counselor and works with inner city kids to keep them out of trouble.

[–]Terraton 268 points269 points ago

I remember that episode, and a certain line where Carlton asks, "Who's that guy?" Will says, "The dude spinning me over his head in the opening credits"

You're breaking the 4th wall! NOOOO!

[–]StumpyGoblin 19 points20 points ago

Link?

[–]Maeby78 115 points116 points ago

Breaking the Fourth Wall: One of the best TV shows as far as incorporating this trope from time to time. Will: If we're so rich...how come we can't afford no ceiling? camera pans up to studio lights

Jazz: So, who's playing the wife this year?

In one instance, Carlton ran off shrieking. The camera followed him for a several minutes as he ran around the various sets, passed through the studio audience and eventually exited the studio where he hugged Will.

In one episode, the family goes to visit West Philadelphia and Will hunts down one of the guys who gave him trouble. When Carlton asks specifically who he's looking for, Will says-

Will: He's the guy spinnin' me over his head in the opening credits.

[–]Nyarlathotep124 19 points20 points ago

Ah, TV tropes, we meet again. Guess I'm not getting any work done today.

[–]BearsAreCool 41 points42 points ago

You were already on Reddit.

[–]pascontent 2 points3 points ago

Yeah this site is TOO meta for me.

[–]killiangray 4 points5 points ago

Who actually spends time on that site? Why does everyone say that, every time?

[–]GaProgMan 8 points9 points ago

I loved that line when I first heard/saw it. I also love that he crowd weren't sure how to react to it.

[–]brianbrianbrian 2 points3 points ago

I loved that they did that.

[–]Fyrus 30 points31 points ago

We've all learned a little something today, haven't we?

[–]preske 4 points5 points ago

Didn't he became a priest too?

[–]Aldesso[!] 90 points91 points ago

and eventually god. It was a wierd show.

[–]preske 16 points17 points ago

what?

[–]eacxxxz 17 points18 points ago

Yup, go back and watch season four. They don't rerun those episodes any more, but you might be able to find them on the deep web.

[–]LNMagic 0 points1 point ago

Don't question God. It makes him angry and give bad advice to kids in Philly.

[–][deleted] 28 points29 points ago

As I recall, Will never got his ass whooped. There was an episode where Will and the family go back to Philadelphia, to visit (Will ends up staying for awhile). While there, Will confronts the old neighborhood bully that he was supposed to fight before he was sent off to Bel Air... he never actually fought him and Will wants to settle unfinished business.

[–]joeyjo0 12 points13 points ago

Technically, he's in LA's Bel-Air.

Because most of the episodes omit the part of the intro where he's in a plane, I'd like to think he took the cab to Bel Air, MD.

[–]CheeseBurrito 8 points9 points ago

There's also the fan theory that Will Smith died in the fight. The taxi driver was either god or an angel, and Bel Air was heaven (Bel air means beautiful air).

Will found himself among family members that had died before he did, yet he didn't know it. Whenever his father or mother visited, it was simply a representation of them visiting his grave.

[–]techstepper 5 points6 points ago

ODB could have done it.

[–]Valark 2 points3 points ago

[–]Treats 7 points8 points ago

But... the license plate really did say "fresh" right?

RIGHT?

[–]Luke273 19 points20 points ago

Classic Schmosby.

[–]joeyjo0 4 points5 points ago

Love Barney's flashbacks too.

[–]iMarmalade 8 points9 points ago

I've always taken the "one little fight" line to be an expression of the character's bravado then to be an accurate portrayal of events. My theory is that the mother was justifiably afraid for her Son's life after he was nearly beat to death by the gang, but in his own retelling,

I really want to see that list though... I love unreliable narrators...

I'm going in.

[–]zahrada 18 points19 points ago

RIP Captainpatch.

[–]Darkdev8 1 point2 points ago

Whats wrong with that site every time i see it posted someone says something about it.

[–]schniggens 29 points30 points ago

People seem to forget that Will Smith had a musical career before the show. That's the person who played his mom in the Parents Just Don't Understand video.

[–]aliofbaba 8 points9 points ago

She's the woman who played Wills mother in one of his earlier rap videos, "Parents just don't understand", I think.

Edit: yep, I was wrong.

[–]Aspel 24 points25 points ago

That woman is Will Smith in a wig...

[–]Muffinut 0 points1 point ago

It makes so much sense now, this bothered me for years! Thank you!

[–]dougiedugdug 100 points101 points ago

the better question is which one is real, vivian 1 or 2 edit: fixed

[–]SantiagoAndDunbar 71 points72 points ago

First aunt viv was a way better fit. Heard she got pregnant in real life and couldn't do the show anymore

[–]silent_p 20 points21 points ago

I saw in an interview that she was just kind of a nightmare to deal with.

[–]Kupy 53 points54 points ago

She got fired because she got pregnant, and the was a breech of contract.

[–]shutyourgob 76 points77 points ago

I guess she couldn't deliver her lines any more

[–]writ24 146 points147 points ago

Don't do this.

[–]preske 11 points12 points ago

that's kind of harsh...

edit: I did soem googling and on TV.com I foudn this

" Her pregnancy had caused problems on the set of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and she was fired due to difficulties with her salary and the show's star, Will Smith. "

[–]goosse 2 points3 points ago

I hated the first one. Black culture this, black culture that. Second one was just a hilarious black mom

[–]SWF_LookingFor_T-Rex 11 points12 points ago

And she and Will did not get along.

[–]zombiefu 22 points23 points ago

I love how they made a subtle joke about it in this scene.

[–]onion_cutting_champ 51 points52 points ago

OG Vivian was always my favourite, like a motherly Grace Jones.

[–]yellowpride 13 points14 points ago

She was too black for TV though.

[–]Radzell 7 points8 points ago

Heard she was a asshole

[–]romes8907 1 point2 points ago

Heard she was a far more superior actor than everyone else on the show (at that time in their careers).

[–]mybaby51 2 points3 points ago

I loved the original Aunt Viv so much, the second just didn't have it in her.

[–]ebeck1 79 points80 points ago

Same person with a costume on... You should know since you like to dress up your pets for karma

[–]phatcrits 70 points71 points ago

Fight fight fight fight fight

[–]iRideDragons 28 points29 points ago

FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT kiss kiss kiss

[–]strangelycutlemon 9 points10 points ago

[–]mjklin 14 points15 points ago

This is my cousin Carlton, this is my Aunt Viv, and all this is my Uncle Phil.

[–]TheBootFace 34 points35 points ago

I always thought it was Will dressed up as a mom.

[–]_Wolfos 1 point2 points ago

It is.

[–]miba 26 points27 points ago

jazzy jeff?

[–]SanchoDeLaRuse 8 points9 points ago

That's what I assumed.

[–]I_Own_My_Mistakes 18 points19 points ago

Good question, but more importantly why is the baby room tagged with a 69?

[–]rwhittak3 7 points8 points ago

A caricature of his mom.

[–]BDS_UHS 8 points9 points ago

Fresh Prince was a surprisingly meta show, considering it aired in the early 90s. There are a ton of scenes where Will blatantly acknowledges the fact that he's a fictional character in a TV show. I think they even reference the inconsistency in this picture.

[–]psmerling 9 points10 points ago

One of my favorite lines from Uncle Phil went something like "next you're gonna tell me that you just made an album that went double platinum!"

Will just looks at the screen and shrugs.

Gold.

[–]Bxbomberny 5 points6 points ago

No...platinum

[–]nsfw_goodies 1 point2 points ago

why cant we afford no ceiling?

[–]AMcNair 32 points33 points ago

Tyler Perry

[–]TomPalmer1979 43 points44 points ago

No, The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air was actually funny.

[–]live_wire_ 8 points9 points ago

I'm stuck in a basement, sittin' on a tricycle, girl gettin' on my nerves.

[–]LongWayToTheTop 3 points4 points ago

Goin' outta my mind, I thought she was fine, don't know if her body is hers.

[–]bmfbg 0 points1 point ago

going outta my mind. I thought she was fine. Don't even know if her body is hers...

[–]chiefsfan71308 3 points4 points ago

I always thought it was Will Smith in costume

[–]mackavicious 5 points6 points ago

I figure the way the intro goes is how the whole situation went down in "Will Smith" the character's head. That's how "he" sees his mom.

[–]bag-o-tricks 4 points5 points ago

TIL Will's mom was the girlfriend of Freddie "Boom Boom" Washington on Welcome Back Kotter. So this is Will's dad?

[–]tarzanell 7 points8 points ago

She has Benjamin Button syndrome.

[–]MoosiAT 6 points7 points ago

Fairly certain Wilford Brimley is white? Diabetes is serious shit

[–]shibblywibbly 4 points5 points ago

Sugar is white.

Check mate, scientists.

[–]Callmewolverine 5 points6 points ago

Grandma.

[–]Filbert_Turtle 10 points11 points ago

Same person. The top pic is her with makeup, the bottom pic is her without.

[–]PGERMS 2 points3 points ago

Just checked. There were at least 42 different actresses who played Will's mom.

[–]idunnothis 2 points3 points ago

Sometimes women go into hibernation mode and that’s how they look.

[–]denialerror 2 points3 points ago

Will Smith wearing a wig.

[–]Jaimet 0 points1 point ago

I remember crying as a child seeing the "intro" mom.

[–]FullmetalVTR 3 points4 points ago

Whats the issue? It's clearly the same person.

[–]camerontylek 3 points4 points ago

I know that somewhere out there, there is a lady who repeatedly tells the same story about how she played the mom in the Fresh Prince opening credits.

[–]Mattyx6427 3 points4 points ago

That's what she looked like when will was killed on the basketball court. After he took a "cab" to purgatory, when she showed up she manifested as younger because will wanted to remember his mother as the beautiful person she was when he was young. Not the cranky old neglecting mother that she had become

[–]DaisyLayz 2 points3 points ago

Uncle Phil was a "judge" and father figure, kinda like God. And in the last episode, the house was empty...meaning he had resolved all of his unfinished business (finishing college, confronting his real father, etc).

I saw that Reddit post a while back too ;)

[–]DKhubbert86 3 points4 points ago

His Aunt.

[–]Fimbulvetr6 12 points13 points ago

Does no one know the damn song?

[–]JakeCameraAction 1 point2 points ago

Its the mom from the music video "parents just don't understand".

[–]Sozin91 0 points1 point ago

A characterized representation of his mother?

[–]eventually_i_will 0 points1 point ago

His mom. WOAH!

[–]dusty2084 1 point2 points ago

After all these years I just noticed the 69 in the background.

[–]Ferrariice 0 points1 point ago

I always thought it was Hillary in disguise?

[–]kevie3drinks 0 points1 point ago

[–]patronizingperv 0 points1 point ago

[–]Sl1ngdad 1 point2 points ago

Original post.

[–]Tmg05 0 points1 point ago

The better question is what the fuck is up with that lady's wallpaper?

[–]VoodooIdol 0 points1 point ago

It's Will's mom when she wakes up in the morning. Der.

[–]Deathbyceiling -1 points0 points ago

No this is Patrick.

[–]imadude123124 -1 points0 points ago

it was the 80s

[–]guntfuddler 0 points1 point ago

I think that might actually be Will, now that you mention it.

[–]BlastoiseLawl 0 points1 point ago

Will's mom.

[–]R3ckl3ss 0 points1 point ago

OMG! Short Merrill-Lynch stock!

I assume this is great advice since you're obviously posting from 2006.

[–]boshtrich 1 point2 points ago

LARRY JOHNSON!

[–]pog_mo_thoin 0 points1 point ago

I thought it was just some random person because they hadnt considered even putting his mother into the show at that early stage. also, did anyone else think the cop in the opening credits was Philip Banks?

[–]GHOSTRID8R 0 points1 point ago

I'm trying to replay the theme song in my head. lol Its not going to well.

[–]dogfartmonster -1 points0 points ago

It's the Humpty Dance guy from Digital Underground. clearly.

[–]je_kay24 0 points1 point ago

It is obviously a metaphorical representation of of he views his mother when she is chastising him and making him move.

[–]PotatoDonki 0 points1 point ago

It's the big bad wolf.

[–]ghostworld 0 points1 point ago

Haha, I remember wondering the same thing back in the day!

[–]5x5b 1 point2 points ago

That's Will's actual mother in the intro. The one we see in the episodes is actually her spirit projection.

[–]bad_artist_2000 1 point2 points ago

How did this get to the front page?

[–]akkeso 1 point2 points ago

His grandmother

[–]narsty 0 points1 point ago

[–]robyn_graeves 0 points1 point ago

It's woll smoth

[–]pabosaki -1 points0 points ago

You are all reading way too into this. They probably just picked some woman because his mom didn't show up until later episodes, and they were unsure how the show would do.

[–]smelly112 0 points1 point ago

His mom.

[–]snkater 0 points1 point ago

Does anyone notice the number 69 in the back on the second picture?

[–]alexthoms519 1 point2 points ago

It's his mom from his point of view in that situation.

[–]Darktidemage 0 points1 point ago

They look the same to me.

[–]nukethewhalesagain 0 points1 point ago

I believe in the first episode that she shows up they make a reference to her appearance changing. Will asks where her curlers are IIRC. I believe they say that she's changed because of her new boyfriend.

[–]MrSpeedyGonzales 0 points1 point ago

Isn't that Will in a pair of glasses and a wig...?

[–]huntnm 0 points1 point ago

This was funny the first seven times.

[–]SirNerdian -1 points0 points ago

So NOBODY noticed the '69' above Will's 'mom' in the second panel?

[–]Afterb4ng 1 point2 points ago

Thats will smith

[–]brettdoc 1 point2 points ago

She's from the music video by Fresh Prince - "Parents Just Don't Understand"

Linky link

[–]Csoltis 0 points1 point ago

its the mom from the "music video"

[–]gstatty 0 points1 point ago

Clearly her name is Bay Bee!

[–]que_pedo_wey 0 points1 point ago

Yet another "I don't get it" for me. I wonder if I'm working too much.

[–]bhg999 -1 points0 points ago

Isn't that his Aunt... or auntie?

[–]mybaby51 0 points1 point ago

I knew it was a matter of time before I saw this one reddit! Obviously, that is how he views his mother and the world around him.

[–]sectorfour 1 point2 points ago

There's too much happiness going on in here. Looks like you people need THE SADDEST FRESH PRINCE SCENE EVER

[–]spacel3phant 1 point2 points ago

you guys, i think that's just will smith in a lady costume.

[–]MrXBob 0 points1 point ago

That's his mum.

[–]Ihaveafatcat 0 points1 point ago

I just assumed it was his mum wearing a shower cap, or some kind of hat. They do look very similar, I'm pretty sure they're the same person.

[–]PhotoshopMogul 0 points1 point ago

Somehow redditors have turned this into a much more complicated matter.

[–]cameronmcc 1 point2 points ago

Like I said... the mother... Now to understand it the way I understood it, hearing it from the mother... that is, from the mother half of Will's mind... you have to go back ten years, to the time when Will murdered his mother and her lover. Now he was already dangerously disturbed, had been ever since his father died. His mother was a clinging, demanding woman, and for years the two of them lived as if there was no one else in the world. Then she met a man... and it seemed to Will that she 'threw him over' for this man. Now that pushed him over the line and he killed 'em both. Matricide is probably the most unbearable crime of all... most unbearable to the son who commits it. So he had to erase the crime, at least in his own mind. He stole her corpse. A weighted coffin was buried. He hid the body in the fruit cellar. Even treated it to keep it as well as it would keep. And that still wasn't enough. She was there! But she was a corpse. So he began to think and speak for her, give her half his time, so to speak. At times he could be both personalities, carry on conversations. At other times, the mother half took over completely. Now he was never all Will, but he was often only mother. And because he was so pathologically jealous of her, he assumed that she was jealous of him. Therefore, if he felt a strong attraction to any other woman, the mother side of him would go wild.

[–]Venom349 0 points1 point ago

Isn't it his grandma?

[–]CrispyPudding 0 points1 point ago

i think this is how he discribes his mom. you know like when people call their own moms cunt out of anger when talking about them.
