I think the issue is that yes, their guy won, but their guy certainly does not support their interests. Granted, Obama supports most people on reddit's interests more than Mitt Romney, but since they are still basically unrepresented they are still as you put it, "butthurt".

The subject that the verb is applied to is "number. "Of posts" is a modifier but not what the verb is acting on. It's like if farmer john's cows are misbehaving but you express it as "the cows of farmer john are misbehaving," not "the cows of farmer john is misbehaving." Even though farmer john is closer to the verb "is," he's not the subject. The subject is the cows (plural), so the form of "to be" used is "are." Similarly, "posts" is not the subject, "number" is. And "number" is singular.
