As a Belgian beer-loving Dutchman, I love Brussels (especially Deleruim!)

[–]You_Only_Die_Once 13 points14 points ago

Delirium* I'll just assume you've been there a few minutes ago and are drunk ;)

[–]wtfsachode 9 points10 points ago

Dude, Moeder Lambic is where it's at!

[–]TheFingersHurt[!] 0 points1 point ago

I think you misspelled. It's spelled Poechenellekelder. ;P

[–]godsdog23 4 points5 points ago

Westmalle tripel > Delirium

[–]Vic_Vmdj 1 point2 points ago

I meant the café in Brussels :P

[–]TheZad 1 point2 points ago

Westmalle love in the huis, wat wat.

[–]Doctor_Qui 4 points5 points ago

Can't go wrong with Cantillon Brewery: organic, spontaneously fermented, aged in oak, and aged at least a year. Good stuff!

[–]skatar2 1 point2 points ago

Just not the tequila bar...

[–]Shattypants 1 point2 points ago

Nocturnum is my favorite beer in the world!

[–]alienigma 1 point2 points ago

Mmmm Tremens.

[–]Al_The_Killer 81 points82 points ago

Wow, Brussels is beautiful.

[–]kartoen 100 points101 points ago

That part is. The rest, not so much.

[–]dillypo 55 points56 points ago

I was there... damn nearly two years ago now, and it wasn't bad at all. We walked all over the city. Sure a lot of it is business, other areas are markets and parks and shit with people just hanging around, found the turkish side of town, the side of town with tranny hookers, the side of the town that was under heavy construction, and places looking run down. Also found a ton of super old buildings and churches. I duno, as an american who lives in a city where you can't get anywhere without driving (Houston, TX) it was amazing enough to just be able to walk everywhere but to top it off to occasionally stumble across buildings older than my nation... it was just awesome. I don't think any part was "ugly". Then again I don't live there so everything was novel to me.

[–]Japsser 16 points17 points ago

Great description! I'm in Brussels often for work, and regularly go out there as well. I've always had a great time, you just need to know which neighbourhoods to avoid like with any city.

[–]YouandWhosArmy 10 points11 points ago

I always thought Brussels had a bit of the best of all worlds, lovely history, good nightlife.

My family is from Belgium, I go back annually, absolutely love it

[–]opibat 3 points4 points ago

I lived in Brussels, there are rlly parts you shouldn't go alone, trust me.

[–]gJonny 0 points1 point ago

Where is that? I live in Brussels

[–]opibat 2 points3 points ago

North-station Brussels is not rlly the place to be during night, ofcourse, it's been a while since i lived there.

[–]gJonny 0 points1 point ago

Oh yeah, that place is gross

[–]opibat 0 points1 point ago

Exactly, the amount of crimes there is too damn high!

[–]Emperor_Zar 2 points3 points ago

Didn't by chance win a trip with Pirelli did you? I was in Belgium just about two years ago as well. We ventured out of the Grand Place and walked around the city. One surprising thing was going to the grocery store - Del Haize. That was a fucking mad house!

[–]MrTastyCake 2 points3 points ago

I'm just curious, what's mad about "Del Haize" ?

[–]Emperor_Zar 1 point2 points ago

Probably because it was rush hour. Also, a few unique things I noticed that differ from state side grocery stores are as follows:

Cashiers sitting at their stations.

People damned near beating each other for product that is scarce.

Freshly baked bread in warmers.

No shopping bags. (i.e. disposable bags)

People fighting over empty boxes.

Again, it was probably the timing but it was still cool to see the grocery store of the company that owns the chain that I go to here.

[–]MrTastyCake 1 point2 points ago

Oh I see so I'm guessing that state side

Cashier's don't get to sit down.

People get plenty of products.

No fresh bread.

Free shopping bags.

Nobody cares about empty boxes.

Right ?

[–]Emperor_Zar 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, pretty much. Bread is baked daily but not kept in warmers and replenished. That was tasty and awesome by the way. Cashiers only get to sit on breaks and people usually want empty boxes when they are moving. So yeah. That's that. Spot on with everything else.

[–]Catseyes77 4 points5 points ago

The bread is like that because they have to compete with bakeries. Belgians like their fresh bread from the bakery. It's even better then what you taste at the grocery store so you might have missed out on something if you didnt check out a belgian bakery :p

empty boxes and no shopping bags is due to that we mostly recycle and try to think of the environement. You can buy sturdy shopping bags at the grocery store but people try to bring their own or use the empty boxes at the stores now.

[–]Doctor_Qui 1 point2 points ago

Any grocery store that has an entire aisle dedicated to candied waffles is o.k. by me.

[–]cderoeck 3 points4 points ago

I am Belgian, Brussels is my hometown and I totally approve this message. You can find beautiful places everywhere in the city but you have to know where to look. Best parts are not always in the guides. And of course there are districts you should avoid at night : mainly stations and hookers neighbourhood ... like any big city I think.

[–]falsealarmm 2 points3 points ago

I'm from Houston and enjoyed Brussels as well. In fact, I liked it more than Paris.

[–]goodguybart 1 point2 points ago

why is that? As a Belgian, i'm curious.

[–]falsealarmm 2 points3 points ago

Why I liked it more than Paris?

Brussels felt more like an intimate city even though there is a strong business and political presence. Paris was dirty (like everyone had warned) and it felt too crowded at all the popular sites. It's not the Paris that one envisions...it was quite disappointing. I couldn't enjoy the Eiffel Tower lights in the evening because not only was it extremely crowded, you have vagrants hounding you to buy wine or champagne every 2-3 minutes. Same thing at the steps to Sacre Coeur. Everything felt overrated.

I just enjoyed walking around Grand Place and other little restaurants and bars to enjoy a beer and people watch.

Plus, we got scammed at the train station as soon as we set foot in Gare du Nord...and then saw an all-out brawl between some teens as soon as we got off the metro to walk towards our hotel.

[–]spectralnischay 0 points1 point ago

And oh god the Metro and RER are horrible

[–]fe3o4 0 points1 point ago

It's not in France.

[–]Wetmelon 0 points1 point ago

Yeah I've visited that square... it's nice, but I didn't get to see the flowers :(

[–]TheFingersHurt[!] 0 points1 point ago

You. I like you. ;)

[–]JustCallMeBen 0 points1 point ago

You'd love Ghent then :-)

[–]Zeeboon 1 point2 points ago

Yeah.. It's pretty much the only place in Belgium were people are afraid to go in some spots.

[–]learntofart 6 points7 points ago

Antwerp has shit neighborhoods, La Louviere, Charleroi, parts of Liege, etc. Plenty of ghettos out there, son.

[–]Zeeboon 1 point2 points ago

Pff, if you live in Antwerp longer than 1 year and you're older than 14, you're not afraid anymore. It's plenty exaggarated.

[–]TheFingersHurt[!] 2 points3 points ago

Same thing with Brussels. I've lived here my whole life, and only ran into trouble once or twice. It's mostly exaggeration by the media that makes people afraid.

[–]CactusApple 8 points9 points ago

This, pretty much.

[–]blieblabloe 7 points8 points ago

Yes, you'd be better off visiting Ghent. A little like Bruges, but not so tourist-spoiled. It's a cool, laid-back student town with a relaxed vibe but still some historical and cultural values. Thank me later ;)

[–]hafetysazard 0 points1 point ago

I think people pissing, shitting, and busy being passed out in the street adds a certain charm when wandering around through corridors at night trying to find a bar that is full of people. That was my experience at least.

[–]Haha_MadeYouLook 2 points3 points ago

Depends on where you are really. Heizel, Dansaert, Rue Neuve,... are all quite nice. It's a big city and it's got a lot of different places

[–]littlebighuman 6 points7 points ago

It's not that big, in general it's pretty ugly. And awful. I should know, I go there for work every day.

[–]nicasucio 5 points6 points ago

Have you lived in Detroit? Cause that's pretty ugly right there. Brussels might be dirty, boring, cloudy/rainy/cold, but wouldn't say is an ugly place.

[–]Xxrxxxr 5 points6 points ago

I've lived in both Detroit and Brussels and I second this message.

[–]littlebighuman 1 point2 points ago

Yea I consider dirty etc as ugly, but you are right there is some nice architecture, unfortuantly they don't keep it well.

[–]eilah_tan 8 points9 points ago

that's the problem with people like you, you only go there to work. all you see is the uglyness, being stuck in traffic, or waiting on your shitty train being delayed again. brussels is a lovely city if you just took the time to discover it.

[–]littlebighuman 0 points1 point ago

Oh I've discovered it alright. Been there for 7-years :) Sill not impressed. Certain parts have potential, but in general it's a badly maintained, inconsistent mesh. Clearly the result of bad city planning and local government.

Also, people like you? Seriously?

[–]habitualLineStepper 2 points3 points ago

It's ok. It got good parts and bad parts. I live in Brussels, but from cities of similar size and population I'd pick Vienna 10 times out of 10.

[–]Romulas 0 points1 point ago

Having experience with Austria and Belgium (living in Brussels and lived in Vienna) I can't disagree more! Vienna is nice and the people great ( I married one of them) but Brussels I liken to an old worn out coat. Yes it's dirty and not good looking in places , but my my is it comfortable and with a fraction of the stress of other cities in Central Europe.

[–]Dark1000 2 points3 points ago

It's pretty damn boring too. I mean, the place isn't terrible, but I wouldn't recommend a visit over 1000 more interesting places.

[–]TheFingersHurt[!] 0 points1 point ago

Damn boring? You clearly don't know anything about nice places to visit and more specifically drink at. ;)

[–]nate_5603 1 point2 points ago

Was there just a little while ago. And like all cities, it has it's bad areas. If you follow where that picture is pointing and go about a mile, that is one of them. The Grad Place is a hell of a great place to be and the people very friendly and welcoming.

I live near San Francisico and whenever I am out of town, everyone says how wonderful San Francisco is. Personally, it has some complete shit hole areas that shadow many other poor areas in cities I have visited (Hello Tenderloin District.)

[–]gJonny 0 points1 point ago

Agreed.

[–]goodguybart 1 point2 points ago

As a Belgian, i can confirm.

But the entire city of Bruges is like that.

[–]NameTak3r 13 points14 points ago

If you like this you should try Bruges.

[–]TranQLizer 28 points29 points ago

If I grew up on a farm, and was retarded, Bruges might impress me but I didn't, so it doesn't.

[–]Rather_Dashing 11 points12 points ago

Either nobody has seen In Bruges, or people are getting sick of movie references? Arrested Development references still get upvoted every damn time so I'm going to assume the former.

[–]JulesVerneFJ 5 points6 points ago

Nobody saw the movie :)...BTW I loved that movie :D

[–]Count_Takeshi 4 points5 points ago

I went up the bell tower in Bruges where the film reaches its awesome climax, and there was a wooden panel absolutely covered in In Bruges quotes. Seeing the film made the place so special, I probably wouldve hated it otherwise and tried to kill myself on a park bench or some shit.

[–]LunaMcLovin 0 points1 point ago

I didn't see that panel when I went there :(

[–]lonlonland 2 points3 points ago

Source for the downvoters.

[–]Landworth[!] 5 points6 points ago

It is when this picture was taken, but it's horrible a little earlier in the season. There are no flowers yet, and everything is just starting to come up. I hate Brussel' s sprouts.

[–]biggbuckz 2 points3 points ago

Eh... I'll allow it.

[–]YouandWhosArmy 1 point2 points ago

Not to mention the flower carpet smells great too

[–]AcrylicPaintSet 1 point2 points ago

And just around the corner from that square is a pub called Delirium that has the Guinness World Record for the most number of beers on tap. And that big tall building on the left has a light show with music at 11pm.

I've only been there for 2 nights, but I really need to go back.

[–]IHateYourKidsAndPets -5 points-4 points ago

I work in Brussels, and this photo is very pretty, it does not give a realistic view of this city. About 98% of it is ugly, above that it's packed with criminality and hatred. If you are in my country, visit Gent http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/13/Gent_Graslei_zonsondergang.JPG and Brugge can be nice for tourists as well. But stay away from Brussel, it really truly sucks as a city.

[–]Andalycia 0 points1 point ago

I definetely agree! Brussels is a tourist trap. Thousands of people flock to see a very pretty square, and a statue of a boy pissing.. And spend all their money on overpriced beer and chocolate they could get at half the price if they went to other cities.

Ghent is in my personal opinion a much better city as a whole - great cafés, beautiful scenery, and not so crowded!

[–]TheFingersHurt[!] 1 point2 points ago

You probably don't know a lot about Brussels. Yes, tourists are spending all their money on shitty gifts, but then again, it's their choice. A lot of great places, such as Dansaert, Louiza and the Sablon are pretty free of tourists and are great places to spend time.

And, don't get me wrong, I love Ghent as well. I'm from Brussels and am proud of it, but that doesn't mean that I have to hate on other cities just because of some so-called pride. :)

[–]Outrageous_Pickle 31 points32 points ago

I went to Brussels this past summer, I actually stayed in a little hotel in the top right hand corner of this square, it was great, really loved my time there. At night they light up all those buildings and the square looks amazing

[–]ProcrastinationMan 4 points5 points ago

Is that the one where Marx used to live?

[–]wtfsachode 0 points1 point ago

if my memory serves me right, I think Marx used to live in the building towards the lower left of the photo

[–]ProcrastinationMan 0 points1 point ago

Oh, that's right. I was remembering the square from a completely different perspective than the photo was taken.

[–]Robbyc13 2 points3 points ago

Hotel Mozart?

[–]office_chair 2 points3 points ago

I was there during a backpacking trip this summer. We were there in August during a Dali exhibit in Grand Place. Here you go.

[–]Subduction 34 points35 points ago

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is properly-handled HDR.

[–]CactusHugger 12 points13 points ago

was thinking this myself, so rare to see it done properly anymore, it should only be noticeable by looking at how bright things would be relatively.

[–]Peregrine7 6 points7 points ago

Whaaat? Proper HDR should blur the shadows until they're unrecognisable, oversaturate the highlights and darken them so they're darker than the shadows, and then reduce contrast until the image looks like a normal map.

[–]MSuSbro 2 points3 points ago

It looks to be a stitched composite of a few different photos.

[–]throwaway00015 1 point2 points ago

This is somewhere a photosphere (see /r/photospheres) would probably come in handy

[–]anonymous123421 2 points3 points ago

You can tell just by looking at the sky. The clouds always look so dramatic with HDR, and it's tacky when it's executed poorly.

[–]BadSister1984 1 point2 points ago

I was wondering how those flowers got so bright.

[–]w1ngm4n 6 points7 points ago

I stayed in a hotel in that square once. It was really old. I was sitting in a chair next to the window, which was this large floor to ceiling window. It wasn't just one solid sheet of glass but many small squares. Well the chair I was sitting in decided it was time for one of the legs to snap. This made me fall forward and my legs went through the window.

[–]LukaCola 17 points18 points ago

I would wager OP's picture is nicer honestly.

Quality > Quantity

[–]Farisr9k 4 points5 points ago

It's not a competition

[–]Nadeus87 2 points3 points ago

the dutch see everything as competition

[–]Drabkikker 3 points4 points ago

No we don't. Wanna bet?

[–]Bengt77 0 points1 point ago

Gambling is not a competition.

[–]Drabkikker 0 points1 point ago

Ha! Wait till the Dutch get a hold of it!

[–]BlazeUp 4 points5 points ago

Check out some flower parades. Here and google search here

[–]Hope_Eternity -1 points0 points ago

The problem is, OP claimed his was the LARGEST carpet of flowers, which compared to this one it obviously isn't.

[–]LukaCola 2 points3 points ago

It might still be, I wouldn't consider Bat's pic a carpet of flowers. They're planted in rows rather than in a pattern. It's just rows of flowers.

I feel like a "carpet of flowers" denotes that there's some carefully planned layout, like a persian rug kind of style.

[–]Hope_Eternity 1 point2 points ago

True. But each one of those fields is carefully planned out, just separately. And I think one of those fields may actually on its own still be bigger than OP's flower carpet.

[–]LukaCola 1 point2 points ago

They look as if they're planted as crops honestly. If you want to consider that a carefully arranged pattern...

[–]Hope_Eternity 0 points1 point ago

XD still

[–]Donakebab 0 points1 point ago

One looks like a carpet, the other looks like fields.

[–]maxpash 3 points4 points ago

As a pure West Coast American, I gotta say I love Brussels the most of any city I've visited in Europe. My gf's dad lives there in St. Gilles neighborhood and she grew up there so when we visit it's all family time fun and being led around by people who know what's up. Pop-in-law was friends with a guy (RIP) who lived in the apartment right above Manneken Pis, so we ended up there one night pissed drunk, smoking cigarettes and week grass and yelling at the tourists taking pics of the famous statue. Rue Americaine is a great street with neat bars and restaurants, the Monday market in Place Van Meneen has amazing produce, cheese, meat, wine tasting and even a martini bar in a food truck. Nearby is a bar that is far more enjoyable than totally touristic Delirium called Moeder Lambic so so good. Much more intimate with selection of new and old taps. The whole beer culture there can't be beat. Each with its own goblet. I think it's an underrated and beautiful town, with amazing people watching. I like how the Wallonee sit around and complain all day while the Flemish work hard, innovate and long to break the country in half. Best of all tho is ducking into a butcher shop in the late morning somewhere near the flea market at Place du Jeux Balle and getting an Americaine Prepare sandwich, which is a steak tartar derivitave. The delicious spread of raw beef and egg yoke is mixed with onion and mayonnaise and served on a crisp long bread. God just the bread, the food, the beer, the people. An omelette and a Chimay Blanche at Mort Subite. Oh how I love Brussels, but goodness it would be depressing to live in that cold, drizzly grey climate.

[–]Ratjar 4 points5 points ago

I agree with you on everything except the Wallonee x Flemish thing. I did a 3 months internship in Brussels earlier this year in a Wallonee Business. They work very hard.

Now, maybe I just found the only hardworking Wallonees...I guess I'll have to go back and see!

[–]maxpash 1 point2 points ago

True, I'm being stereotypical and it's not actually fair. For the past 10 years I've been with a woman who is Wallonee Belgian now a US citizen and she is a quite successful business woman. Her father and grandparents were all hardworking and relatively successful. Its more based on my impression of her "team" loyalty, and a sense of her understanding of Belgium's own struggle with its identity and which culture creates that and supports it. She seems to have the impression that the Flemish would like to break away from the Wallonee but that they resist the notion and keep the country united. So, that was my little bit of snark. Bottom line for me, is I really think Belgium is wonderful and I'm looking forward to my next visit in hopes that I'll be there at the right time to finally taste Westvleteren 12. Don't even get me started about Antwerp and the beauty of Orval (must see) and the soup festival we attended in La Roche. See now, I'm starting to write a second novel.... *edited for clarity

[–]TheDukeDude 1 point2 points ago

Favorite movie ever.

[–]Wildcard1222 0 points1 point ago

It's going to be a shithole...

[–]TheDukeDude 0 points1 point ago

We've just got off the fucking train. Can we reserve judgement on the movie once we've actually seen the fucking thing?

[–]Wildcard1222 0 points1 point ago

I know it's going to be a shithole!

[–]TheDukeDude 1 point2 points ago

I have you tagged as "Cool Guy Who Likes In Bruges." Until we meet again, good sir.

[–]Wildcard1222 -1 points0 points ago

[–]mikealy 4 points5 points ago

I love how vivid the flowers are compared to everything else. Is this an original or did you edit it with Photoshop or something?

[–]Virtblue 0 points1 point ago

the flowers are lit by lights at night

[–]Simcamb 0 points1 point ago

There is some work on the lights, but it's fairly accurate. Flowers looking like flowers, and old grey stones looking like old grey stones.

[–]jimmiale 4 points5 points ago

That really ties the square together, man.

[–]DasGanon 5 points6 points ago

Ah The great square, or grand place, or grot marq. (My Flemish/Dutch is garbage. Apologies!)

The last time I was there, I had a hilarious tale with one of those tourist markets. You far left corner, is a sort of... mall. Each with a booth and I come in being both, foreign exchange student who has been here a few times, and Wyomingite/cowboy sort, wearing a nicely worn in leather jacket, I got for about $30 at Target. This middle eastern immigrant guy comes up to me in fairly great English says "You sir! Finest leather jackets, made from Italian leather, great stitching and smooth as silk!" I, not wanting to really buy it, says something along the lines of "No, I've got a ton of leather at home and..." "But sir! Fine leather, fresh! Look at this immaculateness! I sell to you for.... 60 Eur!" I finally say this. "Look. I come from a state called Wyoming. You've probably heard of Yellowstone? That's there. We have cows. Literally. LITERALLY everywhere. Leather is cheap. This jacket? 5 dollars. And it's RIGHT off the cow. We ship it off to new york for cheap, and we get the finest fashions. You. Cannot. Top. Me." To which he says "Damn, ok 5 Eur! Final offer!" I nod. He walks off. I go the other way into the square, because I'm just killing time.

Kinda regret not getting that jacket.

[–]TiZonBE 5 points6 points ago

"Grote Markt". Close ;-)

[–]MyAssDoesHeeHawww 2 points3 points ago

Sounds like you probably went into the 'Agora' shopping gallery.

[–]YouandWhosArmy 8 points9 points ago

*Grand Place It's the central square of Brussels,

Go for the flower carpet, stay for the beer

[–]Grahambert 4 points5 points ago

Dont forget Manneken Pis.

[–]YouandWhosArmy 4 points5 points ago

More like don't forget to grab a waffle from the best stands on the corner where Manneken Pis happens to be standing.

[–]Shizzzler 1 point2 points ago

Manneken Pis is so overrated, and it's not even Belgium's oldest. Source: I'm Belgian and this

[–]Lazerfazer 3 points4 points ago

Manneken Pis was the most dissapointing thing I've ever seen.

[–]Shizzzler 1 point2 points ago

I can imagine. It's shameful how it's portrayed as a top sight in Belgium.

[–]off_to_the_races 0 points1 point ago

Just last weekend, I was pissed on by Manneken Pis, no joke

[–]Count_Takeshi 2 points3 points ago

So I've been to Brussels three or four times, and for some reason found myself hating it every single time. I find it to be the most uninspiring city that I've ever visited. Business-centric and heartless. I wonder if someone out there could convince me that Brussels has something special about it..?

[–]Catseyes77 -1 points0 points ago

I'm a belgian and I dont like Brussels either. Visit Ghent or Bruges they are much nicer though smaller cities.

[–]Count_Takeshi 0 points1 point ago

Agreed, I was at some kind of free 10 day party in Ghent a couple of summers back and had a brilliant time. You guys know how to party.. when you're not busy sucking ass in Brussels that is.

I think my experience was tainted by the fact that I was interrailing and the day I arrived in Brussels the first time it was pouring it down with rain.. so I immediately left having taken one look outside the train station and went to Bruges. Needless to say it absolutely shat on Brussels, no contest.

[–]Xxrxxxr 1 point2 points ago

I completely disagree. My appeal with Brussels is the sheer volume and diversity of the tourists and people temporarily working there. It is more impressive than any other city, New York, Hong Kong, London, Paris, in that regard. Most notably I have had experiences and been told many times of people walking down the streets or riding in the subway/ tram with people from the most random tiny countries while they run into expats from their native land. Also bars not really closing (all over belgium...) also helps...

Edit: Spelling and Grammar.

[–]pcserba 1 point2 points ago

I can totally understand. There are cities beautiful to visit (Paris?) and cities where it is great to live. Sometimes you get that 'I want to stay!' feeling right away (mostly big cities like Berlin or Tokyo...) but in other instances the city grows on you. You have to stay a while in Brussels to appreciate it.

But once you have the feeling of belonging to the city, it becomes a great feeling. It's not ridiculously small, but you will keep randomly meeting friends (and friendly people) when hanging out. Whatever your interest, it's small enough that you can be part of what is happening and feel that if you want to do things that matter, it's possible.

It's dirty, traffic is horrible and aggressive and sometimes you'll hate it, but in the end it is a very good place to live and explore. Once you have your spots, it's hard to leave.

Next time you are in Brussels, I am happy to try and change your opinion ;-)

[–]pfagard 0 points1 point ago

I used to hate it too, but have slowly fallen in love with the place.

I have to agree that it is not the easiest of cities to explore. It is as if it has its own personality and will shut you out entirely unless you make a serious effort. Brussels simply doesn't care or cater to those who hate it.

But once I did make that effort, I discovered a city that is full of hidden surprises and huge contrasts. For me, it's the thrill of exploring and finding these beautiful gems that likely, even many of the locals don't know about let alone the vast herds of tourists.

There are plenty of cities that are much more impressive than Brussels, but very few that are as interesting.

[–]coshr 2 points3 points ago

Imagine running throught it!

[–]discopowerpack 2 points3 points ago

It's like they're sucking the life out of everything around them.

[–]StarGate23 2 points3 points ago

I miss this place....

[–]motha-fuckin-repost 0 points1 point ago

Now if only somebody could be found to fit these they could trample the living shit out of that thing.

[–]ZombieWriter 1 point2 points ago

The same city that removed the Christmas Tree because of Muslim protests.

[–]olddoc 0 points1 point ago

There were no Muslim protests. One christian politician said she "assumed" the tree was removed because of religious sensitivities. Except that they replaced it with an electric tree, and the same nativity scene will still stand on the Grand Place. That story only circulated on some right wing blogs, and is complete bunk.

[–]nevereverquit 0 points1 point ago

It's like a giant mandala of flowers.

[–]ilikeraresteak 0 points1 point ago

Beautiful!

[–]dude12322 0 points1 point ago

So what happens after the festivities?

[–]BlazeUp 5 points6 points ago

The Flemish curse at the people from Wallonia and ask their money bag.

[–]Shizzzler 0 points1 point ago

And those from Brussels try to explain they're not Walloons...

[–]AcidfartProductions 1 point2 points ago

Those buildings, man they look cool.

[–]JimJimJimmyJimJim -1 points0 points ago

Brussels sprouts?

[–]teekers -1 points0 points ago

Ahh, my home city. It's also nice around the winter when the christmas market is set up at the Grande Place as well.

[–]Mistressdead 1 point2 points ago

Beautiful. Just looking at this definitely makes me miss Europe, which I've only been able to visit twice within the last two years. I've only been to it's neighboring country, the Netherlands, and I loved that wonderful little place, especially Den Bosch!

[–]orangepeels -1 points0 points ago

Beautiful, but that sounds like a made up category.

[–]roflgoat 0 points1 point ago

The Grote Markt is one of the most beautiful places I've been in my life. It's a shame a good deal of the city is otherwise kind of dirty and run down.

[–]Shizzzler 0 points1 point ago

And you've seen nothing yet. Try Gent and I'll provide tour + drinks! :)

[–]max13007 0 points1 point ago

Anyone else notice the similarities to that city in Assassin's Creed two?

[–]jtwill10 1 point2 points ago

It's places and things like this that make me want to travel the world so bad...

[–]cydonia90 1 point2 points ago

Heads-up for anyone who is already researching plane ticket prices - I believe that this grand flower carpet happens once every two years.

[–]RzK 0 points1 point ago

How many carpets of flowers does it even have to compete with?

[–]ThePandaChoke 0 points1 point ago

I was there this year!

I love Brussels. I went to the Ommegang in 2006 and snapped this photo. Transvestite hookers and a "friar." I thought the chain garters were a nice touch.

I was in Brussels 5 months ago. I was right there, drunk as one can be. Mussels, beer, chocolate and waffles. Paradise man... Can't wait to go back.

I gave a piggy back ride to my gf in the Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert, dropped her, bought some chocolate, picked her up again, and went back to the hotel. The only I can reme, ber this is, we found chocolate in her purse to following morning, and we had two blurry pictures of the events. Best. Night. Ever.

Looks great. Nice HDR.

It also looks like Rangoli (Google Images), a Hindu art that often makes use of flowers in intricate design patterns. Replace the fountain with a diya (small wick-based lamp) and you've got a Diwali celebration.

First thing that came to mind was 'Life surrounded by death.' The buildings look so creepy.

[–]IamSam12345 0 points1 point ago

this picture is beyond breathtaking

[–]Ratjar 0 points1 point ago

I was there this spring. Even though there were no flowers at that time, it was a beautiful place.

[–]Highsclass_Hobo 0 points1 point ago

Are the girls in belgium more dtf than the chicks in the US?

[–]nicasucio 0 points1 point ago

given the amount of burka wearing females you see around in brussels, I would say that the usa has more dtf girls than belgium does.

[–]fe3o4 0 points1 point ago

Though the hookers are pretty forward....

I went to Brussels as part of a French language excursion. We had walked around the town for the majority of the day, until we got to the Grand Palace when we were given one hour of free time. While I went to an Antiques store, the vast majority of the group went to Bart Smit (A toy store chain in the Netherlands and Belgium) and bought all of the silly string canisters in the store, within 20 minutes this group of 40 odd kids was running around spraying each other with it. I have never before seen such a mass quantity of the stuff as I had seen that day.

Needless to say the look on the street cleaning staffs faces was one of mass disappointment, and disgust.

Grand place*

[–]LBORBAH 0 points1 point ago

Sitting in la Grande Place drinking a KVAK sheer delight.

Carpet of Flowers

G

Enchantment

At the beginning of each of your main phases, if you haven't added mana to your mana pool with this ability this turn, you may add up to X mana of any one color to your mana pool, where X is the number of Islands target opponent controls.

[–]AlanIsSupreme 0 points1 point ago

This looks like a scene straight out of Assassins Creed.

[–]FoxyGrampa 0 points1 point ago

THE BEES.

[–]AngrySmapdi 0 points1 point ago

Depending on your definition of "carpet" the Netherlands disagrees.

[–]notsoslimjimmy 0 points1 point ago

After being there a few years ago, this is my summary of Brussels. Beautiful city, delicious waffles, and a very small statue that pisses water. The end.

[–]Stupor_Hero 0 points1 point ago

Looks like they need a giant roulette wheel.

[–]Euphorium 0 points1 point ago

I knew a man from Brussels.

[–]nexustk5 0 points1 point ago

It's not pretty, but it is a lot larger than this link

[–]curlycatsockthing 0 points1 point ago

I lived there for a while and got to see it in person many times. It's really beautiful.

[–]sofer6 0 points1 point ago

The skies are even prettier then the flowers. Great pic

[–]Oed0 0 points1 point ago

mmmmmm chips

[–]guiocacho -1 points0 points ago

can't believe the place where i live made the front page, so proud of myself

[–]jujushushu 0 points1 point ago

as a Belgian, you get an upvote sir. PS: I like Quack beer the best when friends from overseas come by.

[–]HoChiWaWa 0 points1 point ago

Really nice use of HDR, I'm glad some people can use it effectively.

[–]burntweeniesandwich 0 points1 point ago

Helicopter pilot: What is that? I'll bring us down for a closer look...

[–]MrBurd 0 points1 point ago

[–]jinnywithit 0 points1 point ago

While it is breathtakingly beautiful, probably not the largest.

Source: I am from that part of the world (and of course Guinness Book).

[–]fe3o4 0 points1 point ago

I've done a limited amount of international travel, but Brussels was one of my favorites. Drank quite a few beers in the Grand Square. My only regret is that it has been nearly 20-years since I was there last.

[–]Mugros -1 points0 points ago

What's wrong with the colours?

Red is oversaturated and it looks like it's lit by light, but it I see no lightsource. It looks heavily shopped.

[–]gamegenieallday 1 point2 points ago

I would love to just run around in that and fuck it all up.

[–]LGV_123 1 point2 points ago

That whole place is astonishingly beautiful.

[–]ASLAVA -2 points-1 points ago

been there twice, mostly for the delirium bar which is about 2 blocks from there got at least 2100 different beers at the bar most is 2500, getting off topic, saw it with flowers and it looks amazing but the other time i was there, it looked disgusting since apparently no one in that place knows to pic up trash after themselves.
