I like the implication that whoever discovered the peacock mantis shrimp panicked and just started yelling animals into their snorkel and the name stuck.

[–]swaglyf 179 points180 points ago

The Peacock Mantis Shrimp is so fucking beautiful or whatever

[–]HOBOBEAR 371 points372 points ago

[–]PulpHero 152 points153 points ago

I'd motorboat it.

[–]SatchmoPhipps 121 points122 points ago

"NO! Not with an actual motorb-"

RIP Peacock Mantis Shrimp

[–]SunshineBlind 29 points30 points ago

HOBOBEAR: Neither a hobo, nor a bear.

[–]HOBOBEAR 4 points5 points ago

What makes you so sure?

[–]SunshineBlind 3 points4 points ago

The internet connection, making it possible for you to ask me that very question.

[–]HOBOBEAR 6 points7 points ago

Why yes, I do have an internet connection, so that does not make me a hobo. Now there's the second part..

[–]SunshineBlind 5 points6 points ago

That bear is clearly not on Reddit! Lies and deceit! :(

[–]HOBOBEAR 9 points10 points ago

I'm sorry! I took another photo. Better?

I had a friend who had one of them who hitch-hiked into his glass reef aquarium on a piece of live rock. Needless to say, he only uses plastic/acrylic tanks now. Those things can smash their limbs out with the acceleration of a .22 caliber handgun and a force of 200 pounds per strike.

It broke the glass on the front of the tank. Incidentally, we also discovered what was eating his fish.

*Edit- words and spelling

[–]totoro11 48 points49 points ago

Holy. Fuck.

[–]CountDunkula 33 points34 points ago

Yeah most people either go with acrylic or have a glass tank custom built in order to keep them from smashing through. The problem is that most people don't necessarily want a peacock mantis, but they get one with their live rock accidentally. They are insanely powerful little creatures

[–]megadeth456 5 points6 points ago

They also happen to be fucking delicious. We accidentally catch them while fishing sometimes. You wanna be really careful with those things. Ive seen em split someones hand wide open.

[–]Parrotism 46 points47 points ago

I know right? I came over in the afternoon to help try and figure out WTF was eating his fish. Literally an hour later we found out in the worst way possible.

It was a huge tank too. I've had a 3ft/120L tank of my own (freshwater) fail once and empty onto my floor, and that flooded the room and hallway (this was a few years back when I was in school and just seriously starting to get into fish, and still living with my folks. My parents were NOT amused. Thankfully, all my fish were ok. And lesson learnt- check all tanks regularly for failing joints and braces. Especially older glass ones.) but nothing has compared to the 'OH SHIT' moment of seeing a shrimp one moment, hearing a crack the next, and seeing your friends beautiful ~500L reef tank empty onto the floor, rock, corals, fish and all. The whole back half of the house was flooded (Insurance covered it all but the tank itself, thankfully) and we lost most the fish because of the injuries sustained from being flooded across half the house, or being cut by the glass when they were swept from the tank (and had to euthanase a few too because their was no way they would make it)

That's the second and last time I want to see a tank burst. I'm pretty sure we both stick to acrylic tanks now thanks to our experiences.

That said, I like mantis shrimps and could quite easily have one in a (ACRYLIC) tank one day.

[–]LostSoulsAlliance 33 points34 points ago

You can euthanize fish?

[–]Parrotism 191 points192 points ago

Yeah, in situations where death is imminent and impossible to avoid it can be done humanely with an overdose of anaesthetic (even over the counter anaesthetics like clove oil work. In a pinch clove can also be used to knock out a fish for surgery. The dosing is difficult to get right though.). Same scenario as putting down a pet cat or dog really. In larger fish a knife can be used to sever the brainstem. I do not advocate using alcohol or other methods that can cause a fish discomfort to put them down. And never flush a live fish, it's horrible. If a fish is ill, get help from an experienced aquarist. There are plenty of forums online like the kokos forum that can and will help you in an emergency.

We occasionally have to doctor our own fish too (as few vets have enough aquatic experience to do so) and I've personally had to do a few minor surgeries on my own fish. (Keep in mind I am an experienced aquarist, work in the field and have been taught this under the hand of more experienced professionals, and I also are studying aquatic biology on the side. I don't recommend trying this at home unless you have a medical background or extensive training or do a lot of research first) I've trimmed wens of goldfish, helped patch up gashed fish (see above) and even removed a small benign tumour from one or two of my own koi. I do all my own parasite slides for my own fish and the fish of others (I work for a aquarium company that breeds and ships fish around, and the health of our fish is paramount. We also QT like mad), research and medicate my own fish and help others (recently helped a friend diagnose a bloodborn nematode infection killing off her ryukins by doing slides, and helped her make levi laced gel food to treat it. Good news is they are all ok now! :D ). I also autopsy all my own fish when they do pass on. You'll find most people with a serious background in koi (like myself) in particular become quite adapt at minor surgical procedures because of the lack of aquatic vets around.

I've never lost a fish to surgery or treatment, bar a fighting fish to finrot when I was a child. A little education goes a long way. I have lost a few to freak accidents though, most recently two orandas lost to electric shock when my internal power-head on my filter malfunctioned, and I also managed to shock my stupid ass trying to see what was wrong with them (which grounded the tank/circuit and caused the shock that killed them). Almost all of my fish, but those who have succumbed to old age or a freak accident like by bettas and smaller trops, are still here with me. Some of my mother's fish are now reaching the 15+ mark (A beautiful pair of shubunkins). We are very serious about our fish, and very competitive breeders and showers of aquatic livestock. Recently we have scaled back though and sold a lot of our stock as I have moved away for uni.

Basically, when you have expensive fish and no one to help, you learn a lot about aquatic medicine and basic surgery fast. It's part of the reason a lot of pet stores giving terrible advice and terrible cures for basic, easy to treat issues like freshwater ick drive me up the wall. And also having terrible setups, not QTing and selling obviously infected stock. Drives me insane. I'm lucky I work for a private company where we focus on quality over quantity, not BUY ALL THESE SICK FISH FOR $2 BUCKS EACH. That said, there are some excellent, privately owned 'mom and pop' fish shops still out there, who really care about the welfare of their stock and are very knowledgeable, and you should all support them in your fishy endeavours instead of the large chains where profit often comes before humane treatment, and many rarer fish are wild caught.

Sorry for the long post. I've lived and breathed fish since I was a kid and my grandmother and great grandmother used to get me involved with their bristol shubunkins ;)

I'm actually off to a course in anaesthetic doses and minor surgical techniques (PD through work) in the next week or so, and I'm due for a refresher course in medications.

Edit- The general misinformation about fish drives me batty. The number of people who buy 10 fish, throw them in the tank, then wonder why they all die because they did not do their research about basic tank ecosystems and necessities like cycling filters just... Fuuuuuuu. Many species of fish are actually pretty easy keep if you have a lick of sense, do your research, and house them appropriately with the proper parameters and filtration for that species. Obviously you don't want to jump right into discus or a reef tank or other difficult set up until you have the practical experience, but with proper research? A whole world of coldwater and tropicial freshwater fish opens to you.

[–]LostSoulsAlliance 20 points21 points ago

Wow, thanks for the reply!! A serious TIL--I had no idea there was such a thing as doing surgery on fish!

[–]Parrotism 30 points31 points ago

Thanks, and sorry for the long winded rant! And yes, it's often us (aquarists, aquatic bio students and the older keepers) that end up doing it, hence why it's not heard about much. I've only met one vet who does fish surgery, and that was only because he was a fishkeeper himself and was doing it for years (even before his degree) and lived in a koi breeding area so was in high demand.

It's actually funny, because the company I work for currently is a huge koi and goldfish breeding place, and I have to explain every time that I'm working with is not the dregs and culls that end up in the pet stores from the massive breeders overseas (poor guys) going for quantity over quality, but the fish that can reach 500+, like what you sometimes see on http://goldfishconnection.com/ (Check out the auction showroom! I also work with koi, and those suckers can be worth 10K+ and beyond when well bred and raised, hence why we are so paranoid about their health! Last year someone paid a million dollars US for a Ginrin Yamabuki koi, (April fools, but one koi is regularly noted around as having sold for 2.2m, and champion koi from noteworthy shows sell for $150,000 – $300,000 regularly enough.) Not one of ours, but it gives you an idea of the worth of some of these animals!)

It's funny because typically I bred and worked with discus, fighting fish (HMs CTs DTs and all those expensive pretty ones) and other freshwater trops like ghost knives and such when I bred my own... Pretty much whatever I wanted. I've never gotten much into marine. I want to eventually, but I have not had the chance (I move a lot) to settle down in one place long enough to set up a system and get a good feel for it. But, my dumb old goldfish and lovely koi are what is closest to my heart (thanks, nan and your shubunkin goldies), so I took this place/job because of the quality of their project. Profit is not our goal, beautiful, healthy and happy fish, and the spreading of correct keeping knowledge are, and thats something I can really get behind. Plus, they pay us well, though work can be sporadic. I quit one job previously because their belief was the other way (profit over welfare, and unfortunately a LOT of stores and breeders/importers are like this) and never again will I help support that shitfest of animal welfare wrongs.

Probably the most ironic thing is I work with beautiful, exotic fish all day then come home to my generic old fantail, Marmalade. Marmalade was dumped on me for free by a local pet store recently because someone returned him after they 'stuck him in a bowl with a yabbie (kind of a freshwater lobster) and he got attacked'. Needless to say, he was half dead. He's still missing some scales and half his tail, but he's looking much better now. I was going to take him to my parents an let him go in our pond to live his life out there once he healed up, but I'm quite partial to his dumb old face now, so he's living with me permanently in his 100L tank at my house. Plus, he has problems eating (I think that yabbie did some damage to his mouth) so he probably wouldn't survive without me shoving food in his face every day.

He's quite... Therapeutic actually after what happened to my orandas. Like, they may have fried to death thanks to an electrical malfunction, but I can apparently nurse a half dead fantail back to life.

Also, my main studies are actually teaching. I love teaching, but I also love fish-keeping. I'm not sure which path I'll actually end up following yet. Maybe both, who knows! ;)

[–]malakies 4 points5 points ago

I envy how much you love what you do - keep at it!

[–]Parrotism 7 points8 points ago

I'm passionate about everything I do, why would I do it otherwise? ;)

I think if everyone could get paid to do what they love, we'd all be a lot happier. I wish more people would follow their hearts and do what they want with their lives rather then what their parents or society wants them to do because it is successful/esteemed/whatever. Have a hobby? Make a job of it. ;)

I'm also studying to become a teacher, my other passion, and I'm just as enthusiastic about that. I count myself lucky that I have found two things I love to do, and that I can get paid to do them. (And that if I burn out doing one, I can always jump to the other for a few years. Their both wonderful, but also high stress and often heartbreaking work!)

I'd actually love to move up north (Back to koi country, more people to sell and swap with) and open my own small hobby/breeding project again one day.

[–]googolplexbyte 3 points4 points ago

Can a fish suffer? I didn't think it was possible for any non-mammal/bird.

In fact I thought that living things were split into two groups, those who have few young and care for them, and those who just spam out as many babies as feasible and just hope. The latter of which (include all fish and) would have no biological incentive for possessing anything akin to suffering.

If an animal can't suffer what's the point in (humanely) euthanasing it? Just to be on the safe side, in case somehow they do suffer? To abate human suffering at the hands of empathy/sympathy?

[–]Parrotism 9 points10 points ago

Totally incorrect my friend, but thanks for bringing it up! Fish do seem to feel true pain. I don't know how this misconception came about (and it is a common one, even in science), but yes, like us they have a nervous system and a brain, and detect when their body is being damaged and seem to receive that stimuli as pain, just as we do. they also have reflexes (like us) and nociception too, and additionally they seem to feel pain as well as any animal. Fish also possess pain nerve fiber tracts in their bodies that are similar to those that tetrapods, leaning towards them certainly being built to feel pain.

Some people confuse the issue by claiming (with very little proof) that only creatures with a neocortex as part of their brain can feel pain. This seems to be the root of the misconception, and it is wrong (because animals without a neocortex like dogs and cats do certainly feel pain)

I have heard a few good theories towards fish not feeling pain, such a the theory of a reflex (like when we burn our hand and our spine automatically removes it from the danger, even before our brain detects the danger) but given that fish actively avoid things that have harmed them in the past, this goes beyond reflex (because, for avoidance there had to be a stimuli, good or bad, in this case pain and it was bad, so they avoid that situation again. We avoid the stove again because our brain later registers the pain, not because of our reflex action. If it was just reflex we would not feel it and would not learn to avoid it, after all.)

In fact, it's only been recently that studies have been coming out that confirms what most fishkeepers know, that fish don't just act on reflex, they learn from being harmed to avoid whatever harmed them again, as a result of being in pain. They will also nurse injured limbs (another sign of registering pain) and 'flash' and rub against gravel when infected with parasites on the skin/scales (so, either an itch or pain, both are interconnected anyway)

There was an interesting study recently that seemed to prove this once and for all. One group of fish was shot up with morphine, and another with saline placebo. Both groups were then burnt/forced to endure burning sensations, and both set of fish showed the expected reflex behaviour (the same we do with the hot stove, a non pain behaviour. Keep in mind these are separate behaviours, reflex vs pain). HOWEVER, after, the morphine fish shown no signs of pain and continued to act normal (until the morphine wore off), while the saline/placebo fish acted withdrawn and what classicial fishkeepers would identify with their fish having received an injury/being in pain (nursing sore site, etc). this also seems to rule out nociception being the cause of pain like behaviours, ie, it is true pain. Since then theres been a heap of studies along this line that support our fishy friends feeling pain. Additionally, while pain receptors are generally not found in cartilaginous fish (sharks, rays, but that doesn't necessarily mean they don't feel pain) they ARE round in bony fish, like the ones we keep in the hobby. 22 of the 58 sense receptors found in a trout's head, for example, are known pain receptors. Interestingly, the poor trout in this study also shown post-traumatic stress reactions like rocking and other abnormal behaviour after their unfortunate experience. Theres a good Dr Karl article on this one somewhere if you're interested, and I'm sure I can find the article with the morphine fish too, if you give me a moment. Theres also a BUNCH of other articles like this out there

We still don't fully understand pain in humans, but yeah, fish feel and react to pain easily it seems, which goes against what was traditionally though (then again, lots of traditional thoughts are wrong and are replaced by newer, better proven ones). They also react to uncomfortable temperatures. Pain is a pretty old thing in the evolutionary chain, it turns out.

Pain in trout . Morphine fish

Therefore, since it is most likely (and I certainly do believe, based on my experience and the current research) that the fish under my care are capable of feeling true pain, it is paramount that I make everything, including death if I must bring it about, as painless and as easy as possible for them. :)

The more interesting debate is how fish react emotionally to pain. Neurological pain happens to us all, including fish. It's the capacity for suffering that remains up for dispute, ie, they feel the pain, but how does it affect them long term, if at all beyond learning to avoid something because it causes pain? Theses some interesting evidence they have a rudimentary (at least) emotional reaction that I mentioned above with the trout to traumas and pain (And I have known fish, especially intelligent ones like oscars, to 'sulk' after they injure themselves somehow) so theres probably even some emotional capacity for pain there. I can vouch that goldfish, for example, often pine when their long term tank mates are moved, particularly if it was one they got along with well, so I do think they have emotional capacity for many things. They may not understand and it may be more muted then animals with more developed brains, but it's there.

[–]muNICU 2 points3 points ago

Seriously question, what is the appeal of owning a mantis shrimp? In the wiki article I read they are intelligent creatures who are known to interact with their owners. Any experience with how those two traits are shown?

[–]thats-a-repost 6 points7 points ago

Apparently they fuck shit up

Another thing to add to my long list of things that fuel my phobia of sea creatures.

[–]GORILLA_RAPIST 0 points1 point ago

I have a friend who talks about the Mantis Shrimp in the most ANIMATED fashion. It is ridiculously entertaining, even having heard it probably 20 times.

That, and the fire-bats we were going to use in Japan in WW2, are apparently his favorite things ever.

[–]cooliehawk 13 points14 points ago

Also, delicious.

[–]benfaist 7 points8 points ago

It's the ocean's hippy.

[–]TheUnfamiliar 50 points51 points ago

Only one of these I don't agree with is the Mayfly. Because the wings suggest that it may fly.

[–]k3vk3vk3vin 5 points6 points ago

HaHaHaHaHaWoooooooooooooooo

[–]fap_snap 37 points38 points ago

I like how the electric eel and mountain goat are smiling at each other.

[–]lordman 6 points7 points ago

But they're also looking away from each other. Shy lovers eh?

[–]drinimartini 11 points12 points ago

...No they're not...or am I missing something?

[–]Charmalandosaur 3 points4 points ago

it's all in the pupils

[–]account_is_deleted 14 points15 points ago

Eastern Kingbird habitat is more to the east, than Western Kingbirds.

[–]beener 12 points13 points ago

I like to think that they're actually just waaaaaaaaay more west than the Western Kingbirds.

[–]slothenstein 25 points26 points ago

The West is still East of somewhere.

[–]EvanMacIan 32 points33 points ago

Well then what the fuck is a mountain goat? A dog?

[–]Murderer100 42 points43 points ago

The mountain goat is the only extant species of the genus Oreamnos and is in the subfamily Caprinae, also known as goat-antelopes or caprids.

True goats are in the genus Capra which is also in the subfamily Caprinae. They are related to but are not true goats (it's a similar situation for the King Cobra and the Maned Wolf).

[–]ElGoddamnDorado 31 points32 points ago

You are now subscribed to Goat Facts.

[–]miparasito 12 points13 points ago

You know a lot about goats.

[–]Kasuli 19 points20 points ago

Or has internet access.

"The peacock mantis shrimp, Odontodactylus scyllarus, also known as the harlequin mantis shrimp or painted mantis shrimp, is a large mantis shrimp native to the Indo-Pacific from Guam to East Africa."

[–]Pieloi 119 points120 points ago

For those of you that don't know they are the same bastards that punch so hard they boil water.

And have incredible eyesight which allows them to see polarized light and have 4 times as many colour receptors as humans which means they can probably see ultraviolet and watch 3D tv without the glasses or something.

video of a mantis shrimp being an asshole, as always.

[–]Captain_Kuhl 55 points56 points ago

If I was an Animorph, I'd morph the fuck outta being one of those.

[–]bunjog 38 points39 points ago

Imagine the satisfying splop you'd get from shrimp-punching the crap out of a slimy Yeerk. Beautiful.

Man those were some fun books.

[–]Captain_Kuhl 20 points21 points ago

The second I finished typing "Animorph", I contemplated how strange it would look seeing me, a college sophomore, walking out of the young adults section of the public library with an armful of Animorphs books...

In all honesty, think I'd still enjoy the side-story books especially, like the Hork Bajir Chronicles.

[–]ConspiracyCat 12 points13 points ago

They're available online. All of them, if you poke around. I'm not sure why, but it makes me happy that they're there.

Here you go;

http://animorphsforum.com/ebooks/

[–]loli123 5 points6 points ago

Holy crap I love this series. Read every book back when I was like 8, I too am a college sophomore and would read the shit out of those books again.

[–]Arbitrariest 46 points47 points ago

I was like "why the fuck is the cameradude snapping his tongue" BUT HOLY FUCK THEN I REALIZED

IT'S COMING

FROM THE GOD DAMNED

SHRIMP

edit: r.i.p. hermit crab ;_;

[–]THISISNOVELTY 41 points42 points ago

Dude. That hermit crab. I kept on watching the video, hoping that it would win out in the end..I suddenly feel very empty. How terrified it must have been, getting dragged out of its house like that and into a dark cave to be murdered.

[–]TripperDay 28 points29 points ago

If it makes you feel any better, that kind of fear happens in a part of the brain hermit crabs don't have.

[–]el_pinata 23 points24 points ago

IT'S COMING

FROM THE GOD DAMNED

SHRIMP

Laughed, felt guilty.

[–]BlizzardFenrir 14 points15 points ago

Every time you hear that click, the mantis shrimp is basically firing a gun at whatever it's looking at. It's like fishing with a stick of dynamite; the blast the mantis shrimp makes knocks its target unconscious.

[–]Arbitrariest 40 points41 points ago

Needs a nerf, methinks. PMS shouldn't be able to just tank everything and do op damage.

[–]Pearinator 6 points7 points ago

The damage buff needs to be lowered from 25% to around 15%.

[–]chancesarent 34 points35 points ago

Wow, the red and white striped shrimp @2:09 rips his own arm off and hands it to the mantis shrimp so the little asshole would leave him alone. I hope he can grow that back.

[–]Laurifish 7 points8 points ago

I noticed that when I first watched, then had to rewind it like six times to see if it really was ripping off its own arm like I thought it was. That mantis shrimp is terrorizing that tank!

[–]cheddarwalrus 5 points6 points ago

"He'll get it back in his next molt. After all they don't really use there claws all that much." Found this on some aquarium website, so relieved...

[–]Ezl 23 points24 points ago

Wow, they really are assholes!

[–]glaswegiangorefest 20 points21 points ago

Looks like the honey badger of the sea, wee bastard..

[–]THISISNOVELTY 15 points16 points ago

Holy shit, he punched that crab's arm off.

[–]Shadefox 15 points16 points ago

It is reported to have a "punch" of over 50 miles per hour (80 km/h). This is the fastest recorded punch of any living animal. The acceleration is that of a .22 caliber handgun, with a force created of 200 pounds per strike.

After hearing the 'crack' of that things punches... I believe it.

[–]thrillreefer 10 points11 points ago

Dude, weightclass! Only fair fight was the last one against the large hermit. I've got an asshole pistol shrimp he can fight for sport. Meet me on the reef at high noon, we'll throw down for pinkslips on our tanks.

[–]SHITKEEPSFALLING 3 points4 points ago

Poor crabs :(

BACK OFF MANTIS SHRIMP. COOL YOUR JETS.

[–]flying-sheep 119 points120 points ago

weeeell, that only proves that the “peacock mantis shrimp” is part of a a larger group of species called “mantis shrimps”.

it does not prove that “mantis shrimps” are mantises or shrimps.

spoiler: they aren’t really what we know as shrimps, i.e. decapods, though they are something that would vaguely fall under the term “shrimp”, since it’s an umberella term: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shrimp#cite_ref-91

Right, it's a mantis shrimp.

[–]Aspel 2 points3 points ago

Which aren't real shrimps. They're not decapods. Just like whip-scorpions aren't scorpions.

[–]fluffeh_kittay 80 points81 points ago

Or a deer plowed a fox. Buck + Vixen = beautiful love child with long legs and ears slightly too big for it's body.

Buck Vixen is a pornstar name if I ever saw one

Buckle up, we're headed into /r/yiff territory.

[–]thrilla_gorilla 9 points10 points ago

Oh, for fuck's sake, reddit.

[–]Eclipsado 97 points98 points ago

Man I remember these. My dad used to work for the WWF, which had coordinated work with IBAMA when I was around 8 years old (I live in Goiás, Brazil, right in the middle of maned wolf's habitat). They received a call from a farmer who had a maned wolf locked in his hennery, caught stealing/hunting his chickens. My dad called me to go with him while they tried to rescue the little guy to release him back to the wild.

They put in a cage inside the hennery with food in it, waited for the wolf to go in and locked him, he was beautiful to see up so close. Problem is, while no one was looking, I had the brilliant idea of try and pet him. Needless to say that as soon as my hand reached inside the cage he almost riped one of my fingers out.

Anyway, my dad rushes me to the hospital and they take the wolf back to the park. It was a nice day, aside from the bite.

[–]how_does_it_know 69 points70 points ago

My dad worked for the NWO. Wanna fight?

[–]Darcsen 4 points5 points ago

You mean the wrestlers right? I hope you mean the wrestlers, because I wanted to say, "Oh shit, it's the Big Sexy Giant-Killer!"

[–]Mr-Hat 6 points7 points ago

My dad used to work for the WWF, which had coordinated work with IBAMA

Your dad was a professional wrestler and had to fight a robotic version of the president built by Apple?

[–]3Dartwork 47 points48 points ago

"Fox on Stilts", I envision that calmly walking out from between a row of corn then suddenly galloping towards me....scary

[–]theroarer 23 points24 points ago

... The fucking thing gallops... That is terrifying. I cannot unimagine it coming at me.

[–]awkwardIRL 18 points19 points ago

the noise it makes is terrifying https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oBSGEl-yB7A

[–]el_pinata 5 points6 points ago

It does not walk normally. It has a really...odd...gait.

[–]CharredCereus 4 points5 points ago

They're pretty skittish, chances are if you ever see one running at you it's because it's shitting a brick due to scary things behind it.

[–]udevi 7 points8 points ago

Fox on stilts sounds like a children's book.

[–]Hobbes4247791 172 points173 points ago

Something about the way this thing is posing screams "Pokemon" to me.

[–]Dizzywig 57 points58 points ago

That instinctual urge to catch every pokemon

[–]ladyroxanne 58 points59 points ago

Video for the interested.

[–]victorycube 29 points30 points ago

[–]rasmus9311 36 points37 points ago

Apparently it actually is photoshoped here is the original. ;)

http://i.imgur.com/1rZeG.jpg

Looks like a dog with out a neck and slightly longer legs.

edit: Well sorry, it was meant as joke, this is photoshoped. I love how the the downvotes came after 99trumpets comment, like the first people who upvoted actually believed me.

[–]99trumpets 81 points82 points ago

Just in case anybody gets confused, the short-legged photo is shopped. The long-legged photo is not - their legs really are that long. (I used to work around maned wolves, saw them a lot.)

edit: I'm a biologist, worked in zoos a lot, then was (briefly) part of a research team studying maned wolf & jaguars in Emas National Park in Brazil.

[–]ajkeel 25 points26 points ago

WHO DO I BELIEVE?!

[–]JoeThankYou 6 points7 points ago

not sure which one looks more awkward... nice shop though!

[–]marmosetohmarmoset 2 points3 points ago

Dude, did you photoshop OP's picture to accuse him/her of photoshopping? There's about a million pictures online of this animal with the super long legs.

[–]Pastyourbedtime 20 points21 points ago

I wanna see it photoshopped with even longer legs

[–]Saligo 52 points53 points ago

[–]steady_riot 18 points19 points ago

[–]missmaggy2u 13 points14 points ago

Salvador Dali just shat himself

[–]SithLard 38 points39 points ago

That bitch knows she's fabulous!

[–]captainolimar 28 points29 points ago

Isn't it weird it's named after its nonexistant mane and not those legs?

Unless there are some more maned examples.

[–]QuadsNotBlades 63 points64 points ago

[–]Ghost_in_the_Reddit 22 points23 points ago

How many joints does that thing have?

[–]striveforanon 64 points65 points ago

The normal amount. What you think is its knee is actually its ankle, and what you think is its hip is actually its knee. Most mammals are like this.

[–]Class_Act 21 points22 points ago

Makes more sense when you realize that they walk on their toes.

[–]mrJigglez 24 points25 points ago

Imagine hearing this walking through the South American planes at night. Fuck that.

[–]dogismyname3 36 points37 points ago

Are you at the airport?

[–]nomofica 13 points14 points ago

Holy crap, that sound is absolutely terrifying. If I heard that in the middle of the jungle at night, I would piss myself.

[–]FatManTinyCoat 8 points9 points ago

We had some at the zoo I volunteered at for a few years. Beautiful, but stinky. They have a natural musky odor. You could smell them before you even reached the exhibit

[–]aledlewis 25 points26 points ago

"hauntingly long"? First prize for strangest adjective in a title today.

[–]ferrante 4 points5 points ago

That is a Brazilian wolf called Lobo Guará.. Even though it can be found on a couple of other countries in South America, his main habitat is Brazil.

[–]Statefarm 5 points6 points ago

Its long legs remind me of this little guy.

[–]fknrat 5 points6 points ago

"So what do we call this animal with really, really long, slender and graceful legs? Something that really helps describe it perfectly."

"The Maned Wolf."

"Even though it doesn't really have a mane, and isn't technically a wolf, and already has a defining feature we could use to describe it?"

"Yes."

"Well, that's lunch then."

[–]Gst86 14 points15 points ago

Reddit needs to get over the word hauntingly.

[–]rex-manning-day 15 points16 points ago

"Hauntingly long"?

[–]kimbof 8 points9 points ago

I lol'd at 'hauntingly long'. Is that a thing?

[–]cromonolith 77 points78 points ago

I'm not sure you know what "hauntingly" means, but nice picture.

[–]I_tag_everyone 130 points131 points ago

I don't know, I find them a bit eerie. Imagining an animal with long skinny legs creeping around weirds me out sort of in the same way spiders do only to a significantly lesser extent. I assumed it was just a "me thing" but OP.. OP gets it.

[–]EvanMacIan 55 points56 points ago

Fun fact: The Maned Wolf can only walk while screaming.

[–]I_tag_everyone 6 points7 points ago

Jesus it's like you understand my irrational fears. When I was really young, I had recurring nightmares of creatures like this, that walked around with huge long, thin legs and also screamed at me. Sometimes they'd scream so loud I'd become paralyzed in the dream and the rest of it was spent watching them slowly stalk towards me.

My parents made fun of me because I was too young to articulate why it was scary, the only thing I could say was that I had recurring dreams about weird animals screaming at me, which even at the time I recognized sounded ridiculous. Anyway I don't suspect my dreams are the cause of my fears, but rather the manifestation of the fact that I hate hearing people shriek, or really any similarly loud sound (Fuck hairdryers when I'm alone). Most people don't understand. But you, you get me, and I don't know whether that's comforting or terrifying.

[–]EvanMacIan 3 points4 points ago

I know, because we all know. We all have those dreams, though for most they're the dreams that jolt you awake, then fade before you can even think about them. There are some things universal to man, some hidden remnants, from long before we lived in cities lit up like day, long before we fooled ourselves into believing we've somehow rose above the horrors of nature.

They lie buried beneath the consciousness, ancient memories from when we huddled around a fire at night, praying that the sun would rise in the morning, that the darkness would not overcome us.

Your parents laughed, but they only laughed to block out the screaming.

Also, this.

[–]CarloVanSexron 4 points5 points ago

Ah, the majesty of nature.

[–]Tiby312 3 points4 points ago

but giraffes are so cute!

[–]XeroG 6 points7 points ago

geraffes are dumb.

[–]LAWLstudent_ 43 points44 points ago

It means OP is a furry.

[–]RomanHelmet 4 points5 points ago

I would say his usage of the word is just fine.

[–]neoKushan 4 points5 points ago

Why would anyone think it was photoshopped? Has nobody ever seen a giraffe?

[–]m1ndf7u12 3 points4 points ago

I've spotted one here where I live, they're in danger of extinction btw. In our local language (portuguese) they're called lobo (pronounced lo[as in low]-bo[as in bobo], means wolf) guará (pronounced gu[as in gulf]-a[as in tacos]-rá[as in raviolli])

[–]frog_gurl22 7 points8 points ago

Diego just taught us about the maned wolf yesterday!

'Hauntingly'? Why 'hauntingly'?

[–]sojustcloud 6 points7 points ago

Really, "hauntingly"?

[–]fluxaxion 5 points6 points ago

I want one as a pet...

[–]ngtstkr 5 points6 points ago

How are it's legs 'haunting'?

[–]clonn 2 points3 points ago

Reminds me of the second Wizard of Oz film, with those weird monkey thins that have really long legs that skate about. They creeped me the FUCK out.

[–]thescariestbear 0 points1 point ago

It will forever haunt my dreams

[–]orangelinerider 3 points4 points ago

Is anyone else freaked out with the imagery of this thing chasing you?

[–]nomofica 6 points7 points ago

Just wait until you hear its roar-bark. It's exactly as it sounds and it is fucking terrifying.

[–]ajbarrickman 2 points3 points ago

You mean magical? This is a dying breed, being erased from the world as we speak, one day it's roar bark will no longer be heard :(

What a cunty way to describe a dogs legs

[–]Strontium91 12 points13 points ago

I'll bet 8 of those 9 downvotes you got are because of your attitude. Would it be so hard to use an apostrophe?

[–]Boojamon 3 points4 points ago

Or a full stop.

giving body image issues to all the other wildlife...

[–]stevo1078 1 point2 points ago

So this wolf... Does it have equal marriage rights as other wolfs? I understand it lives a different lifestyle but I feel we should give it equal rights. I mean look at how fucking fabulous he looks.
