That's probably because "short" and "long" presses are subjective.
Here at the local US Police force station, we all know that "short" is 1 second and that "long" is 5 seconds. Go ahead and give it another shot with a stopwatch there, it really does work.

That makes it a 27 second "code" to cross in an emergency, doesn't sound very effecient to me. The lights near me would have actually changed on their own in 27 seconds.

I think that's the point. It's not a code to use in an emergency - it's for shutting down an intersection.

Aren't most of those buttons not even connected for the vast majority of them? I only know of one intersection I've ever crossed that actually requires the button to be pressed in order to clear road to cross.

It's like the ultimate placebo experiment.

I had to try it also. So I went up to the cross walk and pressed the button just like the post instructs. Nothing happened.... at first. After about 30 seconds all of the lights started flashing and loud techno music came out of nowhere. There were suddenly several teenagers in the intersection wearing glow sticks and dancing around. At this point I realized that OP lied when he said that the code would turn all the traffic lights red.... It's obviously a code to start spontaneous raves.

The idea is that it takes long enough to punch in this "code" that the light will be close enough to yellow that you will seem to have caused it.

Let me get this straight: this "code" is used in situations in which a police officer, needing to get to an emergency as quickly as possible, parks and exits his car, which is equipped with sirens, walks to the sidewalk, presses the "Walk" button at the intersection he wishes to cross, returns to his car, and patiently waits for all of the lights to turn red?

in the event of a crash we park our flashing loud vehicles in the intersection and direct traffic with our hands. Overrides on traffic lights are under lock and key.

A guy in Seattle did this a while ago, I believe they were able to track the time of day and specific lights that were affected and caught him in the act.

I work in a large city and have tried this more times than I can count when I am rushing to lunch. It doesn't work.

It's being posted in /r/funny now, so I am assuming it's a troll, but I originally saw it in /r/LifeProTips so I took it as a little more valid.

Either way, it's a waste of time and people will look at you like you're an impatient hack.

An other neat trick for people that drive you try flashing your high beams on your car at a red light .... some traffic lights have sensors that will switch the the light if emergency lights are flashing at them.
