I will ask my dentist, Phil Ling. He is a Chinese Jew and should know what this is.

It's a mushroom that has been dried and can be reconstituted by adding water (instant fungus). The mushroom has an amazing ability to reconstitute, and in my opinion tastes pretty good. The mushroom looks like an ear on trees and so it's called a tree ear. The jew ear part comes from a legend or myth that one of these mushrooms grew on the tree Judas was hung on, or something like that.

Thank you. Your explanation has made the world a slightly less frightening place.

Especially since I misread the first word on the packaging as "Infant".

It's instant jew's ear fungus. It doesn't get any more straightforward than that.

Is that why its only 89 cents?

[–]LeutDan 1 point2 points ago

Who gives a shit, it's only $0.89!

I guess "mushroom" doesn't translate well. Never tried this type of mushroom, but this thing looks interesting. Checking Amazon now.

An educated guess: it is a mushroom variety that has been dried, you reconstitute them in water then cook with them.

Instant? My god Normally you can't grow that stuff without wandering the desert for 40 years

That's what it says.
