It wouldn't be a very good idea if you have an alternative way of getting water, and it's always safer to boil water you're not sure is healthy.

However if you're stuck on an island in the middle of nowhere go some distance from the shore (about 25-30 feet should do) and dig until you find water. Make a water hole about one or two inches deep, and seep your cup carefully.

a fast search will get you results like this, which are anecdotal at best, so /r/AskScience would be a better bet to verify what I said.

What the comic implies is that the one on the boat had just spend days/weeks in open waters looking for land while the one on land did the opposite. If they were to swap, all that would happen is the one that's now on the boat would wish for land and vice versa for the other one.

This actually strikes me as sad. For the guy on the island, all he wants is something to send him away in search of civilization: a boat. For the guy on the boat, sailing for god knows how long, land is his only desire.
