First world originally meant the US, Europe, and allies. Second world referred to the Soviet Union, People's Republic of China, and their allies. Third-world was the term for unaligned post-colonial nations. Now that the Cold War is over, there is no more second world, while first world basically just means affluent nations and third world means developing nations and crap-holes.

Huh, never knew that, always thought second-world was used for countries that were semi wealthy like Czechoslovakia (who as it turns out would fit the bill for a second world country)
