If you look closer, most of the american holidays have turned into hopeless circles of consumerism:

  • Easter: adults don't work and kids fill up themselves with chocolate eggs
  • Halloween: adults party and kids fill up themselves with candy
  • Thanksgiving: let's eat like crazy and the next day we'll buy like crazy
  • Christmas: adults party/buy presents and kids learn the joys of materialism

Yeah, families join together in christmas but nobody gives a fuck about the original celebrations, they just think about the alchohol, presents, food and partying.

I think that's why some people say the US is a cultureless country. Everything spins around buying stuff. No typical dances, no typical clothes, no typical food (the cool stuff in the south was borrowed from Mexico and the BBQs were borrowed from south-america), no ancient civilizations (you killed the only ones you had without even getting to know them).

Progressively, the rest of the world is stealing your halloween, and I don't really know what's the authentic essence in halloween, but we're only stealing the costumes based on horror movies, the parties and the pumpkins. And you know why? Because there's no regional attachment to the party and everyone can celebrate it, anywhere, without even thinking about the US.

You're damn right, isleshocky, that's pretty sad. And I wanna give you my condolences, because as a man who has traveled the world, I know there's nothing better than a culture-rich country. It's beautiful, and It's what distinguishes you around the globe, and it's where stereotypes come from.

What do you think about when you hear about Mexico? Sombreros. Spain? Bulls. England? The Queen and the Big Ben. China? The Great Wall and powerful empires. Japan? Samurais. The US? McDonalds, Coke...

TL;DR read the damn thing

Are you the grinch?

No, I'm just pointing out the hipocrisy on american holidays nowadays. The ecard made me think and I know I wrote a bible, but I had to say it.

Edit. I accidentally a word.

I hope I didn't offend anyone.

I think you are offending people because you are stereotyping Americans. I did not down vote you though.

America doesn't have a long history so no, it's not Europe or China. And as for the rest of the world "stealing" Halloween? Really? It's fun and other people just want to have fun too. And technically, it's "stolen" from old European traditions anyways. The US is a melting pot of cultures and it borrows from other traditions, which may give it the illusion of having no culture. But the US does have it's own holidays and regional cuisine. American cuisine has regional flair influenced by the immigrants who settled there. I would suggest not eating at a chain restaurant in America if you are looking to experience the local culture.

Consumerism does play a large role in the US, which many (myself included) find to be sad and disheartening. But American holidays are also about spending time with family, religion, being thankful and being charitable.

I think many people have a negative view of the US because they disagree with their policies and their strong religious beliefs coupled with the fact that the US is very powerful economically. Americans can be quite full of themselves because they are wealthy and it's easy to hate a rich kid. Canada is similar to the US because it too is a young nation without a long history and has a diverse population, but no one shits on Canada.

TL;DR: America does have its own culture but it is written off because of consumerism and unpopular policies.

And America is a proper noun so American should be capitalized.

I see what you mean. America is the melting pot.. and we are not as old as those ancient civilizations. I really feel bad what happened to the American Indians. At least they respected the earth and mother nature. Personally, I think Thanksgiving is the best holiday. I love it. Hanging out w/family and friends.. just enjoying food and wine. My family is from Italy... so they taught me all about what's important. Family, food, hard work, and being a good person.

Actually most holidays aren't considered valid and widespread until they become commercialized.

Christmas is the only time of the year I get to see my entire family and this year I might not be able to make it, so fuck you for bringing me down more.

I vote we go back to slaughtering goats on the solstices to please the gods of the sun and moon. And honestly, I might be kind of serious. Seriously, fuck what holidays have and are becoming, specifically what the are in the media.

You are just looking at the worst people. For plenty of people the holidays are still very much about spending time with loved ones and being thankful for what you have.

This year Wal*Mart is doing it on Thanksgiving!

[–]Esperansza 0 points1 point ago

It happened last year too. And its not just Wal Mart, there are other stores as well. Wal Mart is just opening the earliest.

We're like Bees who forgot how to make Honey. Just buzzing in circles gathering nectar for no purpose. We have Colony Collapse Disorder.
