“This soldier, I realized, must have had friends at home and in his regiment; yet he lay there deserted by all except his dog. I looked on, unmoved, at battles which decided the future of nations. Tearless, I had given orders which brought death to thousands. Yet here I was stirred, profoundly stirred, stirred to tears. And by what? By the grief of one dog."

Napoleon Bonaparte, on finding a dog beside the body of his dead master, licking his face and howling, on a moonlit field after a battle.

[–]BackAlleyRockstar 88 points89 points ago

Thank you for sharing this. It's something I've never heard before and amazing

[–]Slambino 161 points162 points ago

The only other quote, for me, I find more moving is by James Thurber. It helped me cope with the loss of my beautiful friend after she died.

"In his grief over the loss of a dog, a little boy stands for the first time on tiptoe, peering into the rueful morrow of manhood. After this most inconsolable of sorrows there is nothing life can do to him that he will not be able somehow to bear." - James Thurber

[–]Stumblin_McBumblin 32 points33 points ago

Fuck. I miss my dog.

I wish someone would volunteer to fix that terrible photoshop of German Shepherds in front of the American Flag. It hurts my eyes to see such crappy work.

[–]idoubtthestars 9 points10 points ago

This was beautiful. I'm gonna go home and cuddle my dog for a couple of hours.

[–]I_LOVE_ASPARTAME 6 points7 points ago

I just walked my dog and left to go finish up work and now i feel like i should go home and give her a box of treats and nuzzle her.

Sgt: Come here boy.

Nig: Who you callin' boy?

[–]TooLazyToInventAName 11 points12 points ago

Man, I'd hate to be the kid in school who was named Sgt by his parents. That's just cruel.

[–]igrokspock 7 points8 points ago

A couple generations back it was very common to give ranks as first names, often named after Civil War or WWI heroes. Major, Sergeant, Chief, Lance, Colonel. In fact, my nephew is sporting his great grandfather's name, General Grant.. Yes, his actual first and middle names are General Grant. Not as common today, but still a thing some parents do.

DAMMIT. I read a book regarding these dogs. It is AMAZING.

The background for this memorial is that these marine dogs (all previously civilian dogs) were trained for Combat and first used in Guam. Pretty insane stuff. One story was that a handler was killed by a sniper, and one of the dogs defended the body from anyone that tried to approach it.

EDIT: Book is "Always Faithful." I don't know Reddit's criteria on this stuff, but here is the book on Amazon. 10/10, highly suggest this book.

EDIT2: Don't read more unless you want to experience a ton of feels. Dogs protecting other dogs, bonds between handlers and the dogs...pretty powerful stuff

TRI-EDIT: For those wondering about Tam, she was buried at sea after passing away on a boat. She got sick shortly before being deployed, and the vet was hoping that her condition would improve on the way to Guam. Sadly, the weather did not agree with her and she passed away before reaching the destination :(

Ninja Edit #4. Clearly you guys are in the need of more feels. Here is Butch at Skipper's grave

Edit number 5: Here is the full list of dogs on the memorial: Kurt, Skipper, Nig, Missy, Blitz, Bursch, Yonnie, Poncho, Prince, Cappy, Arno, Pepper, Koko, Tubby, Pritz, Duke, Silver, Ludwig, Bunkie, Hobo, Emmy, Max, Brockie, Rickey, and Tam.

DAE le edit [6]: I can't help but notice that people are downvoting this picture. Clearly 4200 people are horrible people, and need to be shot

EDIT #7: What the hell. Almost 8000 downvotes.

[–]vurplesun 30 points31 points ago

They used to euthanize all the dogs after their deployment, though, because they were too expensive to ship back to the States.

I think some of the rules are changing following the bad press, but still.

[–]mwdhandler 14 points15 points ago

Now, all MWD (Military Working Dogs) are returned after deployment. While they are still considered equipment, most kennels handle their own dogs as far as end of service. In this day if a dog is deemed not adoptable (to adopt a dual purpose dog, criteria such as bite video and a significant amount of documentation is required to be sent to Lackland). In my kennel the handler had first dibs on an adoptable dog; I got two of mine. If no one in the kennel wanted the dog, there is a long waiting list for adopting a retired MWD. Non adoptable dogs are put down. It's hard on the handlers when that happens. Usually the dogs are at a base longer than the handler, so there is a lot of history.

[–]WorldOneWon 6 points7 points ago

They did cover this! The author of the book, as well as the Company vet were able to save quite a few though!

[–]DatPoliteness 12 points13 points ago

Oh man :(

[–]Bumgill 12 points13 points ago

God bless Sgt. Stubby

[–]AnarchPatriarch 13 points14 points ago

For those that haven't read his story, check out his Wikipedia article. The dog needs a movie made out of him.

[–]blunt_person 3 points4 points ago

Holy shit. That's a bad ass dog.. And I can't get over how cute he looks in his 'uniform' with the pinned medals.

And that's quite the list of achievements: Veteran of war, medals for certain battles, could detect gas attacks before anyone else would warn the soldiers around him. Could hear artillery/mortar fire before people did and would warn everyone. Considered to be the sole responsible person (yeah, I'll humanize him) in capturing a german spy in his regiment... Damn... you could write a book about him and it would reek of "this would never happen in real life"

[–]mwdhandler 13 points14 points ago

I was a MWD Handler for 3 years. I got out because I hoped to work a dog in the civilian world without knowing that none of my mil training/experience matters. All that being said to say this: "WAR DOGS America's Forgotten Heroes" Required viewing during handler school at Lackland AFB. If you want a ton of 'feels', I def recommend...

[–]Wicked_Aviator 3 points4 points ago

Upvote for relevant username

[–]WorldOneWon 2 points3 points ago

These feels dude.

[–]mwdhandler 11 points12 points ago

My instructors (they were not what you would describe as 'nice') would leave the room during a specific part of the video. They had seen it a 1000 times, but they didn't want to watch it again. They had enough respect to leave the lights off for those that shed some tears. Many grown men looking down at a desk so we didn't see each other...

[–]beefwich 5 points6 points ago

Can you tell us more about Nig?

[–]WorldOneWon 11 points12 points ago

Sadly, I did not bring the book with me when I went back to school :(

From what I remember though, none of the dogs suffered when they were killed in action. The handler/dog relationship was pretty damn deep though, and the comment I made before about dogs protecting their owners was not uncommon for them (that particular story was noted because the dog wouldn't even let allies near him to get his body/tags. They had to use 2 other dogs to lure the dog away from his handlers body so they could get to him).

Near the end of Guam, the Japanese soldiers wizened up and actually focused on shooting the dogs, as they could sniff out ambushes and hidden soldiers. Soldiers were quoted as saying that whenever a dog was killed, it hit them as hard as when a human died. Those dogs saved their lives over and over.

[–]maxwell600 475 points476 points ago

[–]grimster 17 points18 points ago

Anyone who's watched "The Dam Busters" knows about Nigger, the RAF's brave black lab.

[–]tits_hemingway 3 points4 points ago

Wasn't this the movie featured in The Wall?

[–]experts_never_lie 2 points3 points ago

Yes.

"Also in Star Wars, sort of (more complete here)."

[–]thegreatwhitemenace 3 points4 points ago

According to Bruce Barrymore Halpenny in his books Ghost Stations, the ghost of Nigger has been seen on numerous occasions around RAF Scampton and also around the Dambusters Memorial at Woodhall Spa.

Actually seeing how old the monument is it probably was really nigger.

[–]Nocturnhabeo 0 points1 point ago

Haha that too

[–]Golden-Calf 12 points13 points ago

There was a war-dog named "Nigger" in WWII. It didn't have the same connotations back then, it was just a black dog. It'd be like a person naming a yellow dog "Goldie" today. They're making a movie about the dog, but they're changing his name to "Digger" for the film.

[–]cynthiadangus 3 points4 points ago

Oh, lawd jebus. That tag makes me want to puke.

[–]DougieFFC 12 points13 points ago

[–]friendlyburrito 3 points4 points ago

It's gonna be okay lil nigga.

[–]maxwell600 5 points6 points ago

Also, who the fuck names their dog Kurt?

[–]fearsomehandof4 12 points13 points ago

I give you Gander), highest decorated Canadian war dog:

"For saving the lives of Canadian infantrymen during the Battle of Lye Mun on Hong Kong Island in December 1941. On three documented occasions, Gander, the Newfoundland mascot of the Royal Rifles of Canada, engaged the enemy as his regiment joined the Winnipeg Grenadiers, members of Battalion Headquarters "C" Force and other Commonwealth troops in their courageous defence of the island. Twice Gander's attacks halted the enemy's advance and protected groups of wounded soldiers. In a final act of bravery, the war dog was killed in action gathering a grenade. Without Gander's intervention, many more lives would have been lost in the assault."

[–]o0eagleeye0o 39 points40 points ago

Edit: I removed the link to a comic because the comic writer photoshopped part of the memorial referencing himself and some reddit-related things. Not cool.

[–]tomsriversmith 3 points4 points ago

Anyone else notice the last line on the memorial

[–]fuckyourflair 23 points24 points ago

Oh man, a military appreciation post, and it's for dogs. I can't wait to read the comments on this one.

[–]The-cure-for-stupid 20 points21 points ago

TIL that a dog named Nig is more interesting to the Reddit masses than the fact that dogs saved countless lives during the worst war in history and were highly valued and respected.

[–]dolsmj13 5 points6 points ago

I was expecting a "why do we even need memorials, especially for dogs?" type-post with a bunch of upvotes; thankfully I haven't seen it yet.

[–]TooLazyToInventAName 2 points3 points ago

Is this really a military appreciation post? Have you ever come across a dog profession in which they're not considered heroes? Drug sniffing dogs, maybe, but apart from that dogs have it pretty easy when it comes to being recognized for something. At least I've never been on the news for being able to operate a microwave. Then again, I have opposable thumbs.

I mean, it's not like these dogs signed up for anything. It's kind of hard to criticize a dog for going to war.

[–]I_Am_Towel 58 points59 points ago

I bet Nig was first dog that died

[–]Capwiz 17 points18 points ago

Stay classy, Reddit.

I swear that alien life, were it to pass by Earth, would look in, see that we're busy "liking" one another's idiot posts on our massive computer network while our planetary ecosystem crumbles, and would then double-check that their cloaking system is active while preparing for an emergency warp jump to a far-away galaxy.

[–]VESUVlUS 4 points5 points ago

Nah, they're just sitting idly by watching and waiting for us to die off so that they can sweep in and utilize our resources. I mean, who do you think gave us internet and cell phones? Aliens.

[–]gayunicornrainbows 7 points8 points ago

Strolling, rolling, bounding, bouncing across Europe, people often ask me what it means to be an American. I tell'em it's triumph. Triumph. Triumph when we nuke our enemies. Triumph when when peer down from the moon and laugh heartily at Russia. Triumph when we depose one dictator after another. Triumph when we break into the homes of terrorist kingpins on the other side of Earth and shoot them in the face. Triumph when whe use flying robots to bomb other terrorists in Afghanistan, and other nuclear robots to explore Mars. Triumph when we free Europe from nazis. Triumph. Triumph. Triumph

But it's not just the the big things, see? It's the way an Italian cabbie sits up straight and floors the gas when he hears my accent. It's seeing the wide eyes and bead of sweat running down the forehead of a German customs agent when he opens my passport. It's the way a French waiter hangs his head when I refuse the wine and ask for Coke instead, in English knowing full well he understands me.

The way an Aussie blushes and leans into the urinal next to me in the bathroom, or the scowl that meets my smirk when I tip an English waiter in US dollars covered with Washington's face. The way small mobs of Canadian school children follow me from a distance to see what a free man looks like, or how heads timidly rise and women gather when my accent stops the music in the clubs Amsterdam.

Triumph. Every bit of it, triumph. Thats what it means to be an American

[–]flutterarity 5 points6 points ago

[–]popejohntheXVII 2 points3 points ago

Good thing you weren't expecting all the feels, you'd be super disappointed.

[–]smind 5 points6 points ago

Anyone who is touched by this should read up on and support this bill:

http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/112/s2134

http://capwiz.com/compassionindex/issues/alert/?alertid=61176501

It proposes rules that would prevent military dogs from being euthanized and make it easier for them to be shipped back to the US for adoption. It doesn't get any more bi-partisan than this.

The original plaque had the name "Nig" on it and was removed due to offending some people. They have put up a new one without the name now.

When i think of dogs dying, no matter what the scenario, my heart aches for the handlers :( imagine going through a war with a dedicated pooch and then loosing him. I can't imagine the pain.

[–]VESUVlUS 5 points6 points ago

Brace yourself. Most (if not all) of the dogs on that memorial were volunteered by their civilian owners, some of which were just little kids who wanted to help with the war effort. Imagine the tears those kids shed when they found out their dog was KIA.

[–]ken27238 2 points3 points ago

I wonder if that dog knew any of them.....

[–]Strych911 15 points16 points ago

Doubt it, those dogs died in 1944.

It's not the same dog, but it wasn't unheard of for the military to have dogs named nigger.

[–]Kadaven 2 points3 points ago

This is right next to the War Cat memorial.

[–]saidhowitis 2 points3 points ago

The dog in the pic is a Malinois if anyone wondered.

[–]throwaway_nknkn 2 points3 points ago

Well, i just gave my dog a treat with his breakfast but i think i'm going to go and give him an extra one after seeing this.

[–]badAtheist 0 points1 point ago

I always thought making a heroic decision should be part of what makes a hero, rather than being forced to be heroic unaware of deadly circumstances cuz you're just a dog and humans are using you so they're less likely to die.

[–]chronoflect 13 points14 points ago

It's an interesting picture. The human probably has a sense of mourning or loss that is conveyed to any human audience, but the dog probably has no idea what is happening. In fact, the dog is probably just happy that the human is petting it.

[–]keeboz 4 points5 points ago

Dogs are relatively intuitive. The human likely has some strong feelings toward the memorial and the dog can likely sense that. So the dog may not know why the human is acting weird, but it probably knows it's something serious.

[–]recuringhangover 1 point2 points ago

that reminds me of an excellent book that has never been translated in english i believe - Les monts de destin.

[–]I_wearnopants 0 points1 point ago

How old is this picture? Also do you know the marine in it?

[–]Portalz -1 points0 points ago

At the end of the day, we are using unknowing and innocent animals to fight for disputes created by politicians and religions(at least in more recent times)...among other things. However i will admit there are some pretty good rebuttals for this statement. Or situations where the species may have a wager determined by outcome of a fight among humans. It ends up being a matter of perspective i guess. Still, something to consider.

I'm pretty sure one of the scenes in Pink Floyd's "The Wall" show the main character watching this film.

I wonder what cats were up to when these dogs were out sacrificing their lives for their country.

Nig?

[–]Jinairik 1 point2 points ago

This got me into some wikipedia searching on

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_individual_dogs

Here, I read this:

Fido, a mixed-breed dog, whose master, Carlo Soriani, had died in an air raid over Borgo San Lorenzo (near Florence, in Italy) in 1943, during World War II. Fido waited in vain, for the following 14 years, for Soriani's return, going daily to the bus stop in Luco del Mugello (a frazione of Borgo) where the man used to get off after coming home from work.

RIGHT IN THE FEELS.

This is the number one reason why dogs are better than cats. Those dogs saved lives.

[–]Ragnarok2kx 0 points1 point ago

I remember someone telling me that working dogs in the military got a virtual rank one higher than that of their handler, so mistreating the dog you are assigned is a huge deal.

Would anyone know if there's any truth in that?

Some weapons of the state have four paws

Why a dog named NIG?

[–]too_lazy_2_punctuate -1 points0 points ago

Everyone always seems to ignore t he fact that theres a dog named nig on that memorial. As a former marine, I cant tell you how awesome that is.

[–]diggizsofuckinggay -1 points0 points ago

I would be the guy who named his dog "Nig"

[–]AeonCatalyst -1 points0 points ago

This is a bit off-topic, but considering the World War Z links on the front page today: In the World War Z book, there are chapters told from the perspective of a dog handler (during the zombie war) and it's actually BEAUTIFULLY written. Max Brooks must have interviewed these handlers or be a real dog person to convey the attachment the handler and his dog have. It may have been my favorite perspective in the book to read.

If everyone said no to war there wouldn't have to be lives lost

[–]mellowmonk 0 points1 point ago

I.e., war kills animals, too.
