Can you imagine what having that for a skull and getting slapped in the face would feel like? It would be like your face stabbing you in the face from inside your face.

[–]alpha69 13 points14 points ago

Pretty sure it hurt like hell even without the slap.

[–]nomanoid 22 points23 points ago

Jesus, wouldn't these little spikes also break somehow? Can you imagine the feeling of being stabbed in the face from inside your own face, by your own face, and also having little bone fractures all over your face and later on bone spikes floating around inside your skin? Mother of God, is all I can say.

[–]deadpoetic333 168 points169 points ago

Heard you like getting stabbed...

[–]saintgio3 204 points205 points ago

Fun fact: Your username (minus the numbers) was my band name in high school.

We were horrible.

[–]Leiderdorp 51 points52 points ago

a whole society was horrible then.

[–]Anarei 18 points19 points ago

[–]saintgio3 30 points31 points ago

Well shit on my nipples and call me macaroni. We settled on Dead Poetic because it was the only one we could agree on that (to our knowledge) wasn't taken.

[–]Biffbaggins 30 points31 points ago

Macaroni

[–]Octizzle 14 points15 points ago

you still have to shit on his nipples

[–]atl2rva 7 points8 points ago

Simpsons did it

[–]coffedrank 31 points32 points ago

Your band and that guys humor has something in common then

[–]gamerholic 91 points92 points ago

[–]TheFunnyMadman 30 points31 points ago

If only funner was a word

[–]elruary 17 points18 points ago

I can scarcely imagine, seriously fuck cancer, and life is truly a bitch. I'm sure i'm putting it politely for this poor fellow.

[–]whitefoot 17 points18 points ago

You can see it was growing in to his eye socket as well. Imagine that just constantly stabbing you in the eye.

[–]Mattho 22 points23 points ago

I think the fact it probably looks the same from the inside is enough torture. Stupid body.

[–]DuDePing 19 points20 points ago

Deadeyez, you're actually not too far off from what it's like to have this disease. I venture to say that it's probably even more badass than that. One of the greatest heroes of Iceland's medieval Sagas (written during Iceland's golden age of literature, roughly between 1000 C.E. and 1300 C.E.) is called Egil Skallagrimson, a poet, a warewolf, a viking. Egil Skallagrimson was a real person, and though the eponimously named "Egils Saga," a fantasy epic is almost certainly pure fiction, one part of it is thought to be very real. Egil's skull is variously described as bony, unbreakable, and misshapen. It gives him protection in battle, making him somewhat impervious to less blows from weapons, when he is carrying his weapon. Indeed, at the very end of the saga, his skull is dug up from underneath a small church and is then struck at with an ax. The ax sticks in, but does not shatter the skull. Moreover, he is also described as suffering from headaches and spells of dizziness. To make a long story short, he is thought by many medieval scholars to have had the disease you see pictured here. And, scholars tend to agree that it probably did give his some protection in battle and probably did stab at him "from inside [his] face" because the growths you see are actually very hard, calcified growths. It's almost exactly like a spiked helmet.

[–]Emilysaurusrex 211 points212 points ago

I've been around forensics my entire life. Dead body, great. Maggot infested floater, no problem. Any form of bone disease makes me want to hurl. It just creeps me the fuck out.

[–]Alexanderh86 36 points37 points ago

ever seen any bone configurations worse than this?

[–]KazPinkerton 231 points232 points ago

I don't want FOP goddammit.

I'm a Dapper Dan man.

[–]Wazowski 23 points24 points ago

I can order it for you, have it in two weeks.

[–]ObtuseMabuse 23 points24 points ago

This place is some kind of geographical anomaly. Everything takes two weeks to arrive.

[–]IsayNigel 11 points12 points ago

*oddity. But good effort upvotes away.

[–]orangefly 39 points40 points ago

i'm going to hell for this, but, he's BONEIFIED!

[–]Jojay1 10 points11 points ago

Damn, we're in a tight spot!

[–]fireinthesky7 6 points7 points ago

You boys are dumber than a bag of hammers.

[–]twain101 5 points6 points ago

And stay out of the Woolsworth!

[–]streetbum87 7 points8 points ago

Watch your language, young fellow, this is a public subreddit.

[–]EchoPhi 2 points3 points ago

Well, it didn't look like a two-horse town, but try finding a decent hair jelly.

[–]Leofan7 4 points5 points ago

You've just made my day.

[–]ElusiveGuy 44 points45 points ago

For once, I'm happy about the Reddit FDDoS: http://i.imgur.com/OrHgk.png

Now to Google FOP.

Edit:

A mutation of the body's repair mechanism causes fibrous tissue (including muscle, tendon, and ligament) to be ossified when damaged.

Surgical removal of the extra bone growths has been shown to cause the body to "repair" the affected area with more bone.

So... if you get injured, you're fucked. If someone tries to fix it, you're even more fucked... how the heck do people survive past childhood with this? More importantly, considering it's genetic, how do these people survive long enough to procreate‽

[–]Coppatop 40 points41 points ago

I can't FOP to this.

[–]Bummstoff 20 points21 points ago

But I have the weirdest bo...never mind.

[–]thrilldigger 31 points32 points ago

Since that site's down, I went ahead and Googled fibrodysplasia, and I'm back to share the horror*!

Here is an image of a person with FOP whose back has become... twisted.

From reading this info page, it seems that this picture has a number of people with FOP in it (John McCain does not, to my knowledge). The woman in the wheelchair likely has a severe case that has caused most or all of her body to become immobile. The man in front is not a zombie; his stance is likely caused by FOP.

Here's an interview with a woman who has FOP.

Here's a National Geographic clip on it.

And on a different note, I found some non-FOP stuff: this is really sad. But this guy cheered me up.

* I don't mean horror as in "they're monsters, get out the torches and pitchforks!" I mean that it looks like an incredibly painful and terrifying condition to have.

[–]AnnaPurnatheBoat 8 points9 points ago

The woman in the wheelchair and the way her legs are fixed in front of her is just so sad. I can't imagine anything worse than a facile mind trapped in an immobile body.

[–]blowuptheking 6 points7 points ago

I'd rather a facile mind in an immobile body than have my mind deteriorate in a perfectly good body.

[–]falsestone 3 points4 points ago

If you're really interested in this kind of thing, you should try the Mutter Museum if you're ever near Philadelphia.

*(Mutter has an umlaut, but my keyboard doesn't).

[–]HungryTacoMonster 14 points15 points ago

not clicking....still not clicking..."wow good job, self! You've managed to make it 15 seconds without clicking on a very possibly DO NOT WANT link in r/wtf."

WHY

[–]My_Penis_Can_Type 12 points13 points ago

Hey, why the down votes? I felt very similar about clicking. I know the rule, comment on a down voted comment and receive many more. I just want to know why, why reddit? Well fuck you then!

(down vote away, my penis only grows harder)

[–]Emilysaurusrex 19 points20 points ago

Forensic anthropologists have some of the worst cases with like staph infection of the bone where you have these huge boney sheaths build up and a gaping hole where pus would have drained out. Then the ancient diseases they cover and just as bad. One consists of a sand mite that burrows in your eye sockets and turns all the bone around into a horrid matrix of tunnels.

Imma stick to the dead bodies that have skin on them. Yup...

[–]twincakesable 17 points18 points ago

Oh dear god, I'm never going near sand again.

[–]Yellowbenzene 151 points152 points ago

That's disordered periosteal reaction to a highly aggressive destructive bone tumour. The "fur" is new bone being laid down to try to effect repairs.

[–]hvonn 155 points156 points ago

Oh god, don't call it fur. Oh god.

[–]sperm_jammies 52 points53 points ago

It looks to me like someone was playing with iron filings and a magnet.

[–]hvonn 6 points7 points ago

Dear Christ, this is all of my worst nightmares. Tinfoil fillings, magnets and filings, fuzzy bones, tree hands... I need a puppy picture to decompress.

[–]ObtuseMabuse 3 points4 points ago

It looks to me like one of those coconut decorative brushes (shaped like a turtle or armadillo) that people leave near their door for shoes.

Poor person :(

[–]bugxbuster 12 points13 points ago

He called it fur but that shit does not look fluffy!

[–]KarmaPolease 5 points6 points ago

don't call that not fluffy. Fuck!

[–]esPhys 46 points47 points ago

Its okay guys! I'm sure it just feels like my blanket!

[–]Apoc2K 27 points28 points ago

Great, now I'm creeped out by blankets.

[–]Alexandur 11 points12 points ago

Fuck, don't call them blankets!

[–]Stooooopido 25 points26 points ago

That's just freezer burn.

[–]IGerhart 67 points68 points ago

My first thought on seeing this skull was "I wonder if they got better". I should probably get some sleep.

[–]Kris-P 49 points50 points ago

This was taken of the skull after they perfectly removed it and transplanted another healthy one...they lived ;)

[–]haywire98 15 points16 points ago

Oh thank goodness. I feel much better now.

My best childhood friend passed away from Ewings Sarcoma at the age of 23. It was hard for me to understand the pain until I saw this picture in the past. I really miss the guy.

[–]graffiti81 44 points45 points ago

My cousin is 22 and has been fighting Ewings since he was 14. I don't think he has much more fight in him.

[–]mego 36 points37 points ago

Please take some time to write down his thoughts. I regret not asking him more about his philosophy on the afterlife. I wish your family the best. Cherish the time you have now.

[–]Leiderdorp 6 points7 points ago

[–]broden 20 points21 points ago

"their death just proves how strong I am c:"

[–]Quierochurros 23 points24 points ago

Wait until you have kids. A friend of mine has kids about the same age as mine and the younger one has been fighting cancer for half his life. An acquaintance had a baby, born with a terminal birth defect, die after little more than a month. The age difference between him and his big brother was exactly the same as the difference between my two sons.

Sometimes, if I let my mind wander late at night, I think about dying and get an empty, dysphoric feeling. But if I think about one of my kids getting a terminal illness it causes physical pain in my chest and gut. My boys are kind, sweet, and funny. The idea of the laughter going out of the world is just devastating. I don't know how my wife, my other son, or I would ever recover. And my boys are just starting to grasp the concept of death. I'm imagining my 4 year-old having terminal cancer, lying in bed, asking me if he's going to die, and thinking about that long enough to write this sentence its making me tear up.

Now it's almost 10am? I have just enough time to get drunk and sober up before I have to pick them up from school.

[–]mobiuszeroone 16 points17 points ago

Nah, you're the only one. The rest of us fucking love terminally ill young people.

[–]mego 1 point2 points ago

Scared, maybe, but try not to be depressed about it. I take solace in the fact that I know my friend was surrounded by loved ones. He even had a wonderful fiance and dog.

[–]Kittae 10 points11 points ago

I'm having a similar feel to this one. My boyfriend's mom had cancer and died earlier this year, after a very hard few months of hospice care. She had a cancer that probably once started in her breasts, traveled into her lungs, and from there just decided to go like a brush fire. She was in horrible pain and was completely out of it most the time from the cancer doing two things: pushing her skull into her brain and pushing brain into skull...

I thought I understood, but this pic has me tearing up.

[–]theundiscoveredcolor 0 points1 point ago

Why can't I hold all these feels?

[–]Stevioso 59 points60 points ago

I just want to sand it. I won't feel better until someone smooths that skull over!

[–]NameDoesntFi 21 points22 points ago

I totally just want to sand it. I feel so uncomfortable right now, even if I smashed it I'd still feel bad. It's indescribable, other than intensely uncomfortable.

[–]stormwaltz 13 points14 points ago

I've seen this image many times before and it elicits the same exact response in me - I just want to smooth it out. Grind it down, sand and polish it until smooth. The feeling is just overwhelming and I'm a bit happier knowing I'm not alone.

Could it be something like Trypophobia?

[–]Dl33t 0 points1 point ago

Just looked up Trypophobia out of curiosity and turns out I have that. I never knew there was a name for it.

I googled image searched it and was sick in my mouth a little which is a first.

[–]Alexandur 13 points14 points ago

Wow, another redditor with trypophobia!

[–]flaim 4 points5 points ago

Never woulda guessed that!

[–]Maple_D 1 point2 points ago

Thank you for repeating What he said but in different wording

[–]GoGoGadge7 20 points21 points ago

My uncle had bone cancer and we were told this is what was happening ALL OVER HIS BODY.

My cousin, who is a pharmacist, said the pain killers he was taking was "some pretty serious shit in insanely large doses."

I was told he was in extreme pain but was so doped up he literally could not feel a damn thing. They described the pain as "enough to make even the toughest pass out out of sheer agony."

Rest in peace Uncle Ron.

[–]DesmondTutu 4 points5 points ago

My best fiend died when we were about 9 years old from bone cancer. My Dad reached out and touched him on the leg, the last time we saw him. He screamed in agony from just the slightest touch. I can still hear it...

[–]mortalum 109 points110 points ago

My only regret is that I have boneitis.

[–]ColinD1 9 points10 points ago

The safety dance wasn't actually as safe as they made it out to be

[–]DresdenPI 15 points16 points ago

I saw this posted here a few months ago and I couldn't stop thinking about it for days. Thinking about what that must feel like, to have tiny little bony points sticking up through your skin and about how your face and eye ridge would be deformed as if they were collapsing inwards. I couldn't stop touching my cheek bone for days before I finally blotted the image from my memory, and now here it is again. God damn it.

[–]QuesoSc2 7 points8 points ago

Prepare to see it again. And again. Because my son, this is reddit.

[–]InkStainLV 13 points14 points ago

That looks excruciating.

[–]MiggyTigs 14 points15 points ago

My grandma died of bone cancer. This hit me in the feels.

[–]mego 16 points17 points ago

Is this from the Mutter Museum in Philadelphia?

[–]penkind 5 points6 points ago

*Mütter

Came for this, was not disappointed! I'm 90% sure it is.

[–]advancix 4 points5 points ago

No, it's from "Universitetets patalogisk-anatomisk institut". That's danish and it means "The University's Intitute of Patology and Anatomy". It's from Steno Museum at Aarhus University in Denmark.

All aboard the Mütter train!

But yes. it does look like it.

[–]BlacktoseIntolerant 6 points7 points ago

My brother had bone cancer (I miss you, Miz).

He was in excruciating pain. I never quite understood what the pain must have felt like. Seeing this, I understand a bit better, and I'm glad I didn't know then the pain he must have felt.

fuck you cancer. fuck you so much.

[–]TronCorleone 4 points5 points ago

Can we please stop reposting this it makes my skull cringe and tingle every time I see it.

My best friends mother was just diagnosed with cancer last night. She has been living in pain for years but was too stubborn and ignorant to do anything about it.

Her daughters finally forced her to go to ER yesterday and after waiting a few hours to get an MRI their worst fears were confirmed. Her back is full of lessions and she also had a lump on her breast that has turned into a mass on the outside of her breast that is seeping pus.

They admitted her overnight so she can get a PET scan today. Her willingness to ignore her health problems have turned into the worst case scenario. Her adult children are livid and burdened by sadness at the same time.

Cancer is a bitch.

[–]_tenken 0 points1 point ago

ya friends mom has a "degenerative back problem" so she has to get social security disability, she's like in her mid 50. My question is like "ok so you have a huge problem now -- what did you ignore the last 10 years that could have been treated then" ....

Same thing for her husband that had a heart attack at like 50, still doesn't exercise, doesnt follow doctors guidelines on eating healthy.

stuff like that can be really sad.
