These formations were a major plot point in the movie "Sweet Home Alabama". But they looked like glass there -- probably used blown glass instead.

[–]BECKSTERRRR 111 points112 points ago

Maybe a different type of sand?

Edit: Just googled. Definitely blown glass. Reese Witherspoon, how could you lie to me?

[–]decoyyy 82 points83 points ago

don't worry, i heard she got stabbed the other day.

[–]Ihateyourdick 98 points99 points ago

With a knife?

[–]jikls 315 points316 points ago

No. Witherspoon.

[–]Snow88 52 points53 points ago

I see you've played knife and spooney before.

Edit: Much like Vampire Weekend I stand corrected.

Knifey not knife and no 'and.'

[–]erickghint 29 points30 points ago

I've always thought it was kinfey spooney.

[–]Snow88 4 points5 points ago

You sir, are correct.

[–]Kris-P 1 point2 points ago

Aight Aight, you win, I see you HAVE played knifey spooney before...unlike Snow88's weird and awkward version

[–]_wait_what_now 7 points8 points ago

snaps for you & your hilarity! (Legally Blonde 2, anyone?)

[–]jikls 10 points11 points ago

U WOT M8

[–]mateogg 3 points4 points ago

actually, she looked down and stabbed herself with her pointy chin.

[–]RogerTheDowner 4 points5 points ago

No, Witherspoon. Wait

[–]Agent_Woolsey 2 points3 points ago

miss out on karma because a minute too late feelbadman.jpg have an upvote, I feel your pain.

[–]seriouslyrad 37 points38 points ago

This stuff is called fulgarite! We got some specimens of these in my antique shop once.

Its most likely that blown glass was used because fulgarite is moderately rare. I've only ever seen a couple pieces. Some fulgarite does have a glasslike appearance; it just depends on the temperature and other elements playing into the making of it. Glass is only superheated sand anyways.

Edit: Another reason why some fulgarite is glasslike is simply due to the fact that it was buffed and shined.

[–]thirdtimeboogaloo 3 points4 points ago

Love fulgarite. I was given a piece from my mother as a gift growing up and it instantly became my favorite piece of my rock/mineral collection.

[–]Fugowee 2 points3 points ago

weird. I find fulgarite on the beach in Outer Banks, NC all the time. Doesnt seem too rare to me. 'Course, its usually tumbled smooth, but found some pieces that were cool shapes.

[–]therealajax 6 points7 points ago

and were also featured in the 2007 movie, "The Reaping" featuring Hillary Swank.

[–]SukonMatic 8 points9 points ago

And TV series Supernatural, used in ritual to summon Death to kill a renegade angel who took in all souls of purgatory to gain god like powers. Fulgurite.

Love that show!

[–]garyj924 70 points71 points ago

Fulgurite!

[–]Suq 13 points14 points ago

lechatelierite! (dont know how i remembered that word)

[–]CircumcisedSpine 11 points12 points ago

Le Chatelier-ite. Must have been named for a Frenchman.

[–]minervamoon 1 point2 points ago

Oh, like Le Chatelier's Principle, pronounced hilariously in chemistry classrooms as "lay SHOT-lee-ay".

[–]PhoenixEnigma 265 points266 points ago

[–]thebmarinara[S] 121 points122 points ago

Thanking fellow redditor for your upvote??! Have another! You have earned yourself a "polite/considerate" tag on my res :)

[–]evky0901 13 points14 points ago

Appreciating the kindness of another Redditor. Have one yourself! -- Coolest photo of the day right here.

[–]thebmarinara[S] 21 points22 points ago

Gosh, all these good vibes from fellow Redditors today! I have to say, I've noticed this isn't the usual M.O. around here, so this is quite uplifting. Thanks guys!

[–]ImAzura 13 points14 points ago

Thanks for everybody, hooray!

[–]Kayahx 2 points3 points ago

Met a nat geo photographer in raleigh nc a few months back. Pretty sure he said his name was ken smith. He was an awesome guy, had a good conversation and he asked about a good pizza place for lunch :)

[–]plungerpenis 416 points417 points ago

Am I the only one here who though of Onyx when first seeing this picture?

[–]figbar 14 points15 points ago

I actually thought of salvador dali

[–]fjyrin 10 points11 points ago

I make this mistake all the time too, but the pokemon is spelled "Onix"

[–]honey_I_shot_the_kid 232 points233 points ago

No that's not true.

Whole bean coffee will go stale within about two weeks. It really depends on the specific coffee and how it was roasted though. Some might do well for up to a month? And some roasters will give advice as specific as a coffee being at its peak "from days 9 to 12".

Generally if you're brewing coffee (as opposed to making espresso) you'll have a wider window. But however long it is, it's a few weeks max.

Fortunately, you can freeze whole bean coffee, and it should last for months (in a deep, chest style freezer, it might be a year or more). I split up the 12 or 16oz bags I get in half (6 or 8oz), double bag them in freezer bags, and pull one or two out a week, as I use them up. You can do the same thing with mason jars, or something similiar. Just make sure to let the beans come up to room temp before opening them up (otherwise they'll get condensation all over them, which is no good). And I haven't had good luck re-freezing beans, once they're out of the freezer, just try to use them up.

[–]UlisesGirl 122 points123 points ago

I don't even...

[–]RedFollower 109 points110 points ago

If he/she wants to talk about coffee beans, let them go for it.

[–]UlisesGirl 46 points47 points ago

Oh I'm not stopping this person, but I mean... There are non-sequiturs and then there's this.

Whatevs.

[–]yellephant 54 points55 points ago

Oh hey, I totally haven't seen this before...

This whole "oops I posted in the wrong subreddit" thing is stupid as shit.

ESPECIALLY when the comments are ripped from posts only hours old.

[–]Helpfulandattractive 4 points5 points ago

I found the same thing... I just tried hijacking a higher comment. The truth must be told!

[–]aardappelen 5 points6 points ago

That was...helpful. Thank you.

[–]pianoplayer98 82 points83 points ago

[–]snirp 10 points11 points ago

Well buddy I have some advise for you: you can sacrifice some ground coffee to keep the rest fresh. It works like this:

You keep the ground coffee in a container, but keep it in the bag. Here comes the trick: take a small spoon of coffee from the bag and scatter it over the bottom of the container. This will loose taste and smell to the air inside the container, thus sacrificing itself. As a result, the coffee inside the bag will be less affected. When it wears out, simply sacrifice more coffee.

I am having to work with Turkish coffee here (Istanbul) and it is the only way.

[–]byllz 2 points3 points ago

effected -> affected

[–]snirp 4 points5 points ago

You sure this was in reply to Onyx?

[–]femmeswag 5 points6 points ago

quality reply

[–]fuckyoubarry 5 points6 points ago

Fuck that, I keep my shit outside all winter and it tastes better than your mocha mocha yaya dada bullshit any day of the week.

[–]Bedbuggin 7 points8 points ago

Vanilla bullshit

[–]karma1337a 3 points4 points ago

That's ridiculous. They have some kind of texture on their feet that allows them to climb up walls. Think Van der Waals forces.

[–]adambuck66 2 points3 points ago

Rough day, huh?

[–]Devanismyname 1 point2 points ago

You may have responded to the wrong post.

[–]svmk1987 1 point2 points ago

Why is brewing coffee different from making espresso?

[–]FeverishAmishTrooper 4 points5 points ago

Just a little heads up, whole bean coffee is whole bean coffee, doesn't matter if you are brewing it it making espresso with it, they are both whole bean coffees.

That being said... NEVER freeze your coffee, it separates the oils from the bean! When the oils separate you drastically lose flavor from your coffee, also when you defrost the coffee you run the risk of ruining your whole entire batch of beans due to condensation.

To keep beans at maximum freshness, grind them JUST before use, store them in an air tight location, like a Tupperware, or a air free plastic zip lock bag, or a coffee canister. After coffee is ground you have 12-24 hours before you lose that freshness from the beans where it actually might taste stale if you brew after that selected timeframe.

Also if you want a good cup of joe, try a French press, it's easy to make and it has the oils on top of your coffee everytime so you can enjoy a fuller flavor and easily feel the nodes on your tongue

[–]pukefirst 3 points4 points ago

I came here to read this comment.

[–]WarpedConscious 4 points5 points ago

Ok im sick and tired of having the best comments then realizing they have already been said. So no it doesn't look like Onyx it has more of a Arbok feel.

[–]TechnologyFetish 2 points3 points ago

Onyx I choose you!

[–]KittenWithMittens 49 points50 points ago

[–]BRAVE_ALLCAPS_GUY 12 points13 points ago

I... I want to try this now...

[–]onlythis 6 points7 points ago

It was nice knowing you.

[–]vernes1978 2 points3 points ago

We will remember you fondly, and will speak of your brave attempts at science.

[–]dyltotheo 7 points8 points ago

In a science show I watched the researchers studying lighting would shoot model rockets into lightning storms with wires connecting them to a bucket of sand on the ground. They would study the resulting fulgerite formations

[–]JesusWantsYouToKnow 2 points3 points ago

That sound like the lightning lab here at UF. I think I remember seeing the same show and being caught off guard seeing my professor on the discovery channel.

[–]ophello 31 points32 points ago

SPICE MUST FLOW

[–]tublina 4 points5 points ago

Nice, little mouse.

[–]tublina 4 points5 points ago

It's been so long, I had to google, Muah'Dib.

[–]animustestandi 2 points3 points ago

Muad'dib

[–]skepticrat 32 points33 points ago

can someone tell me why that's not falling over?

[–]carniemechanic 99 points100 points ago

It has become glass, and it's all welded together, with more of it underground. I'd love to have one.

[–]BCBUDDHA 23 points24 points ago

ebay has tons, if you're using the word "love" then the pricing is probably worth it

[–]narpas 13 points14 points ago

Now I realize that it's a stationary object, not the sand that got kicked up as he took a photo of a lightning bolt that struck about a meter away.

[–]eagleapex 6 points7 points ago

ditto!

[–]gtr053 13 points14 points ago

[–]Bearearl 3 points4 points ago

A fulgurite, similar structure to a polymer, if I remember correctly.

SAND DRAGON!

[–]Shneeg11 4 points5 points ago

Thresher fossil?

[–]johnrada 9 points10 points ago

looks like onix to me

[–]tommygunz007 5 points6 points ago

very cool. When I learned to blow glass (no joke) we often used sand and made shapes in the sand, and then poured molten glass into the sand molds. What we had was very similar to what you see here. Hard glass in the center, with sandy outsides. This is very cool. It would be great to polish it somehow.. it would be very neat

[–]Hoodedki 4 points5 points ago

I thought it turned into cool glass sculptures like in Sweet Home Alabama.

[–]TypicalTacos 4 points5 points ago

[–]maineblackbear 3 points4 points ago

Bostonians: There is a real nice fulgurite downstairs in the weather part of the Museum of Science. Its about 20 feet long, composed of sand turned to glass by electricity. And its in the same room as the electricity show with the worlds largest Van De Graff generator, which produces major electrical impulses scaring the crud out of young kids. I highly recommend it. Love Boston's science museum.

[–]imdsm 3 points4 points ago

False, this is a goa'uld symbiote.

[–]llcbdavis 2 points3 points ago

i must have this for my rock collection.

[–]TheTalentedAmateur 2 points3 points ago

[–]Mr_Zero 2 points3 points ago

Those are so small. I would think the one in the picture would be worth $100,000's.

[–]DJffeJ 2 points3 points ago

I wonder what attracted the lightning there, or if it was by pure chance and it simply found the quickest path to the ground. Maybe there's an epic chest underneath?!

[–]BonutDot 2 points3 points ago

You could always tie a thin long metal cord to a model rocket and fire it into a thunderstorm. Make lightning strike exactly where you want it to.

[–]deathcomesilent 2 points3 points ago

The perspective of this photo is very misleading as to the size...

[–]COCKSWAIN 1 point2 points ago

thanx for sharing this pretty neat photographic image of an interesting and unusual sight to the r/pics subreddit

[–]America_Owns 1 point2 points ago

This needs to be in /r/CrossView!

[–]Plazmotech 0 points1 point ago

I heard it turned to glass; am disappointed. Now I feel stupid for thinkings something so ridiculous T_T

[–]calpoop 1 point2 points ago

Looks like a giant Cheeto.

[–]Hellzapoppin -1 points0 points ago

Liar, you've just been playing with some poo you found on the beach.

[–]mp51669 0 points1 point ago

It looks kind of like the bad guys in Mario

[–]spike199neo 1 point2 points ago

[–]abortedhivemind 0 points1 point ago

Does the charge actually draw the sand up out of the ground like that?

[–]reunite_pangea 0 points1 point ago

[–]mitchzim 0 points1 point ago

That's actually very creepy

[–]Hayes92 0 points1 point ago

it looks like onyx at first glance

[–]compto35 0 points1 point ago

Onyx?

[–]Zorodude77 0 points1 point ago

Everyone knows electric has no effect against ground...

[–]mumbly__joe 1 point2 points ago

It resembles a lonely teenager's sock puppet.

[–]AkAdude 0 points1 point ago

I'm never going to the beach again.

[–]knoxvilleninja 0 points1 point ago

Whoa

[–]WoollyMittens 1 point2 points ago

Thunderbolts and lightning, very very frightening.

[–]Ore1lly 0 points1 point ago

Onyx, go!

[–]Akira_kj 0 points1 point ago

Would this now be the most likely spot that lighting would strike again? From the photo and playing in the desert, this is likely the highest point on the ground for a good 100+ square feet right?

[–]Kdizzlenizzle 0 points1 point ago

Onyx?

[–]P2D_ItsME 0 points1 point ago

What is the scale of this formation? It looks huge in comparison to the person but they are kinda far away.

[–]ordoabchao9 0 points1 point ago

Up vote for you for giving credit to the photographer!

[–]Slagathor83 1 point2 points ago

Sandworms. You hate 'em right? I hate them too.

[–]WhoKnowsRight 0 points1 point ago

Onix, I knew you were real <3

[–]TokenMatch23 0 points1 point ago

Onix a rock type and thus is resistant to electrical moves. This photo is a fake. No way can lightning create an Onix.

[–]Stones25 0 points1 point ago

Don't lie to me this is an action shot of a tremor!

[–]SirKarma 0 points1 point ago

Anyone else thinks the sand looks like onix?

[–]gabesunday 1 point2 points ago

Tremor Boner

[–]PsychoNitro 0 points1 point ago

What good timing!

[–]spokesthebrony 0 points1 point ago

In Eastern Washington, gophers sometimes chew through the 440v buried power cable for circles and create these same "glass trees", although they are smaller. We have a bunch of small, ~6" shattered pieces found when digging up the line.

Potato fields make the best glass trees.

[–]forecep 0 points1 point ago

The thumbnail for the picture looks like an onix

[–]dtrmp4 1 point2 points ago

With a picture like this, I expected to be able to click the comments and find a source near the top. But there was none. Apparently this is called a Fulgurite. Here's a video of someone making one in a pan: Fulgurite creation

[–]Troiseme 0 points1 point ago

So Electric Types ARE good against Ground Types!

[–]LiteralClownfish 0 points1 point ago

So THAT'S where Onyx come from.

[–]wopchop87 0 points1 point ago

Kind of reminds me of Gaara of the hidden sand village (Naruto reference) and his ability to control sand lol

[–]FuzzyGunNuts 0 points1 point ago

What I wouldn't pay to see this caught and slowed down with a high speed camera. I can only imagine how something like this forms in that split second.

[–]Ducks_Quackington 0 points1 point ago

Baby onix!

[–]SnowGN 1 point2 points ago

[–]thescrapplekid 0 points1 point ago

I always wondered if it turned to glass when struck by lightning... I guess not

[–]Great_Chairman_Mao 0 points1 point ago

[–]SOwED 0 points1 point ago

Dammit I thought it turned into glass.
