Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  6. No animated images. Please submit them to /r/gif, /r/gifs, or /r/reactiongifs instead.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Artist is Dalton Ghetti, originally from Brazil, now lives in Connecticut.

Here is his site: http://www.daltonmghetti.com/

[–]Svelemoe 132 points133 points ago

The twist: His pencils are giant.

[–]Quackenstein 60 points61 points ago

Then so be his fingers.

[–]rashsteel 2 points3 points ago

The twist: The pencil in the first photo was the only regular one. The rest be giant.

[–]boom_headshot1 19 points20 points ago

What is this, a hammer for ANTS? It is going to have to be at least... three times that big!

[–]jwwhales 12 points13 points ago

As someone from Connecticut

[–]ghostbackwards 2 points3 points ago

chester checking in

[–]Sqeeye 26 points27 points ago

TIL: Pencil art is a thing.

[–]MadAboutMickey 118 points119 points ago

Pretty sure people have been drawing with pencils for years, buddy. Sheesh, get with the times.

[–]TheAnimax 7 points8 points ago

I thought he was going to flip him off...

[–]Sqeeye 2 points3 points ago

I'll give you credit there, I didn't see that coming. Well played, mate.

[–]ghostbackwards 2 points3 points ago

once saw the other pencil art post yesterday i knew this one was close behind. This one has been front page often for a while. Go Connecticut.

[–]xPye 8 points9 points ago

Dalton M. Ghetti was deeply affected by the events on September 11, 2001. He decided to create a memorial to honor the victims of the attack by carving one teardrop every day for each of the victims. Individual teardrops are carved from the graphite of recycled pencils found on streets and sidewalks.

Using only his hands, naked eyes and a razor blade, he created one teardrop in little less than one hour. The teardrops are about the size of a grain of rice. Combined, they make one large, two-dimensional dark teardrop against a white background.

Averaging 300 teardrops per year, it took him 10 years to complete the 3,000 teardrops necessary for this memorial.

Wow.

[–]scPolecat[S] 28 points29 points ago

Thanks for this. I had no idea. His work is amazing!

[–]maggiefiasco 5 points6 points ago

I have actually seen this in a little museum in New Britain, CT while visiting my boyfriends grandmother.

I'd always wondered why such a neat little piece of art ended up in such a small museum, but Connecticut being Ghetti's home state, it makes sense now!

[–]TrolleyPower 0 points1 point ago

There's a new Britain?

[–]maggiefiasco 0 points1 point ago

There is! And, as I learned when I visited, it was traditionally populated by Polish immigrants...

[–]thewasko 2 points3 points ago

I saw them there too! they're really incredible to see up close, so tiny and exquisite.

[–]maggiefiasco 2 points3 points ago

Very cool! I was really surprised, for such a small museum they had a wide variety of interesting displays, the pencil lead art included. :)

[–]acid_free 1 point2 points ago

Thank you. I hate when people post awesome stuff with no source.

[–]Time_Tester -1 points0 points ago

If I'm not mistaken this guy slows his heart rate down so it becomes incredibly low, and works on his pieces between heartbeats so as not to make any sudden movements.

[–]palfrey23 177 points178 points ago

The interlocking ones are just incredible

[–]seriot 294 points295 points ago

I'd like to see him try a lower case i.

[–]rollonthemhaters 13 points14 points ago

for those that don't know, this is a chinese word pronounced "Biang" and is a type of noodles known as Biang Biang Mian, no one uses this word, however it can be seen on food carts selling the dish. FYI.

[–]D4rkr4in 4 points5 points ago

Thank you. As a Chinese, I didn't even know that word.

[–]geek180 2 points3 points ago

So how long does it take to differentiate complex-looking words like this? I'd have to study it for so long...

[–]A_Blind_Pilot 2 points3 points ago

I still wouldn't. I have high standards.

[–]SeattleRedditor 35 points36 points ago

Or a lowercase j and have you notice how it's rarely used.

[–]DeathToPennies 16 points17 points ago

No, not really. Now that I think about it, I only ever use it in names. Cool.

[–]SeattleRedditor 13 points14 points ago

Or the word "Just"

aint nobody got time for that

[–]Vorporeal 41 points42 points ago

Sure, because I frequently use "mojo pajamas unjust" in a sentence.

[–]datpiffy 33 points34 points ago

yo i'm just drinking a mojioto in my pajamas, bitch

[–]Godtiermasturbator 10 points11 points ago

You jelly?

[–]tonight__you 4 points5 points ago

I bet you just skip over that whole month of January, huh?

[–]TouchMyPebbles 3 points4 points ago

It has a capital J

[–]LoafingAround 3 points4 points ago

I use these words all the time!!

Donjons Ejaculate, ejaculated, ejaculating, ejaculator, ejaculators, eject, ejected, ejecting, ejector, ejectors

[–]onemoreclick 4 points5 points ago

The same list twice.

[–]0bi-JuAn 5 points6 points ago

Could you use that in a sentence please.

[–]jesusinabottle 19 points20 points ago

Jasmine jawed with Jesus in the jacuzzi, jeopardizing their relationship through her judgmental ejaculations. She seemed quite jaded with his jetliner jokes.

[–]ledraps 5 points6 points ago

told

[–]doctopie 6 points7 points ago

now Just wait a minute. If you were going to prove your point, shouldn't you have at least made it a lower case?

[–]to_be_quite_frank 37 points38 points ago

The intertwined hearts are blowing my mind

[–]DuckingTape 75 points76 points ago

Iv seen this like a thousand times but im still in awe, how the fuck?

[–]ampitere 26 points27 points ago

He probably uses very precise and sharp cutting tools. Graphite is a very soft material and is very easy to shape, although it takes a delicate hand not to break pieces as small as this guy's work.

[–]thedirtyspatula 4 points5 points ago

I hope they're precise! Considering I can't even start a picture without snapping a good chunk of the lead off!

[–]guenther_ 2 points3 points ago

At least if you fuck up, just sharpen it for a few seconds and start over.

[–]Th3-3M3n5tru4t0r 5 points6 points ago

*Graphite.

[–]ampitere 8 points9 points ago

You go without sleep for too long and you begin to just write things that don't even make sense, thanks.

[–]intensenerd 4 points5 points ago

Horchata enema! Yup. You're right. I need a nap.

[–]TwatFace92 1 point2 points ago

Its great, it makes the front page at least once a week which is usually the time it takes for me to forget something. So I am pleasantly reminded of its awesomness.

[–]LAWLstudent_ 30 points31 points ago

I have an overwhelming urge to snap all of those.

[–]Babba2theLabba 6 points7 points ago

destroyer of worlds

[–]SMIRTLE 9 points10 points ago

I've met him a few times, he used to visit my towns highschool every year here in connecticut. His name is Dalton Ghetti... not only is he a great artist, but he is an amazing person. For the 10 year anniversary of 9/11, he was working on a project that required making nearly 3,000 hearts on the tip's of pencils for each victim of 9/11. Also, getting to see his work up close and person is a true experience... they look much better to see them with youre own eyes!

[–]Baddboy78 27 points28 points ago

What is this, art for ants?

[–]oh_mos_definitely 6 points7 points ago

If it is, then what would you call this?

[–]162534 6 points7 points ago

art for bacteria

[–]MagnetiCube 6 points7 points ago

Witchcraft

[–]OoogaOoogaYoink 4 points5 points ago

There's a guy who could write pages from books on a single grain of rice. I think he wrote the hail Mary prayer like 6 or 7 times on one grain of rice. He never used any kind of optics. He just used his naked eyes. He said one day his goal was to make art out of individual atoms. Does anyone know if the creator of these artworks uses any optics or does he use his naked eye? Just curious. Also, anyone familiar with this rice writing artist? I think I saw him on Ripley's Believe it or Not (the TV show).

[–]libertas81 14 points15 points ago

ahem graphite

[–]Got_Engineers 7 points8 points ago

The heart one? How? I don't even understand.

[–]Ronnie_James_Diode 5 points6 points ago

He carved two hearts that were connected and broke the connection between them.

[–]Hippeejesus 16 points17 points ago

[–]zakool21 0 points1 point ago

Older than the internet (almost) and I still don't mind seeing it reposted. Pretty amazing stuff.

[–]pakattak 3 points4 points ago

Fantastic photography as well. I wouldn't mind buying some of these as large prints and framing them.

[–]LoveChildOfMyParents 29 points30 points ago

I bet this work leads to some really promising career options

[–]david-me 45 points46 points ago

At least his talent is not pointless.

[–]Z3F 11 points12 points ago

He might be slightly mislead.

[–]david-me 16 points17 points ago

Then he must sharpen his skills.

[–]ky1e 54 points55 points ago

He carves pencils

[–]LoveChildOfMyParents 34 points35 points ago

Dammit ky1e

[–]GoodGuyAnusDestroyer 2 points3 points ago

Typical ky1e.

[–]lenaxia 1 point2 points ago

Your dull wit must shade your perspective on life.

[–]grabbindosh 1 point2 points ago

But I think he gets the point.

[–]yzerdog 10 points11 points ago

Promising career options? Like he cares. He works as a carpenter and does this for the love of it. If you want to buy one of his pieces -- forget it. You couldn't afford it. Nobody can. "I do not sell my pencil art, ever." Interview with this amazing artist here: http://pencilsforafrica.com/the-pencil-gift/

Thanks OP for finding this!

[–]cesclaveria 10 points11 points ago

it was the start of a pun thread, "pencil lead" "leads", he wasn't actually serious.

[–]Esch_A_Sketch 4 points5 points ago

"I do not sell my pencil art, ever"

I honestly wish I could get one.

[–]just-plain-mean 3 points4 points ago

Dot the "i" motherfucker. Do it.

[–]Peaceblaster86 12 points13 points ago

I, too, have seen the front page today.

[–]FourTwoSix 4 points5 points ago

That looks very familiar. Where's it from?

[–]oh_mos_definitely 4 points5 points ago

It's from today's Front Page.

[–]TrolleyPower 3 points4 points ago

This sure ain't gonna get old.

[–]bau5e 11 points12 points ago

Holy crap, this is only like the 9th time I've seen this.

[–]halfhartedgrammarguy 2 points3 points ago

What did you say to the 8th one?

[–]yourmom3211 2 points3 points ago

This is definitely not what I was expecting when I read, "Pencil Art"

[–]Spreadhappyness -1 points0 points ago

... it's graphite ;)

[–]kokonkokon99 0 points1 point ago

Sir, I'd like to report a glitch in the Matrix...

[–]richiewww -1 points0 points ago

this is just as amazing as the man who spells out words using grains of rice.

Pretty certain I'm remembering that right.

[–]_Gnoram 0 points1 point ago

Of all the things to carve out of...

[–]EloWea 0 points1 point ago

My friend uses his pencils until they're almost as small as in the alphabet picture. This seems like a better way to not waste the end of the pencil without cramping up your hand.

[–]JPAPKILLA 1 point2 points ago

Haha yeah, I met this dude, He lives in Westport and had a show right next to my house, along with many other artists including my then gf's mom. The art was amazing, it really is amazing what he has done on such a micro scale

[–]JPAPKILLA 0 points1 point ago

Wheres the eifell tower???? That one is fucking nuts

[–]Flaimelion 1 point2 points ago

And I can't even write without the lead breaking.

[–]sca1pel 1 point2 points ago

[–]Nightwing11 -1 points0 points ago

[–]antaryon -1 points0 points ago

You can tell how hard each letter was to make judging by the length of the pencil.

[–]5guysburgersfries 0 points1 point ago

Fack... every time I sharpen a pencil the lead falls out

[–]SnappyCanvas 0 points1 point ago

Wow! A great works of art! I am amaze!

[–]bigwallclimber 1 point2 points ago

[–]JuJuBee_Whoopee 0 points1 point ago

[–]bwngare 1 point2 points ago

You sir, are a walking god. I tried sharpenning my pencil, couldn't do it without breaking the lead. Here, You're making sculptures out of pencil lead. I shall now show myself out.

[–]bluemirror 0 points1 point ago

is it weird that this makes me dick hard?

I had the pleasure of seeing Dalton's work and meeting him when he had an exhibit in a Connecticut Library, super cool dude. You can't appreciate this work fully unless you see it in person. It's so amazing.

This gets posted and front paged on reddit every couple months.

[–]AlfaAlfalfa 0 points1 point ago

"Hey bro, I needed to write something down but all your pencils suck.. the tips kept breaking off..."

[–]kpxkrappy1 0 points1 point ago

Pretty amazing, but I get arthritis just looking at these pictures

[–]ren1999 0 points1 point ago

I love this.

[–]MakeWar90 0 points1 point ago

I understand the interlocking ones, but the saw one is confusing me a tiny bit. I don't understand how he got the four circular studs to show. Are these just carvings into the wood, or are they actual graphite?

[–]SaranghaeyoTaeyeon -1 points0 points ago

I hate to break it to you, but that's graphite, not lead.

[–]Pbguye10 -1 points0 points ago

What a sharp idea!

[–]austineddy -1 points0 points ago

There is nothing that would make me hate myself more than trying this.

[–]liarandathief -1 points0 points ago

How often does he get 90% done and then it just breaks?

[–]PRNDL -1 points0 points ago

Dat hammer.

[–]nicholmikey 1 point2 points ago

I keep running into cool but old stuff on the internet. I think, I should not post that to reddit, everyone has seen this and it will just get down voted. Then posts like this come and prove me wrong.

[–]enjoyalcohol -1 points0 points ago

Great craftsmanship, and the colours (correct spelling of colours btw) of the pencils are really intriguing. But we need a bigger message in the medium.

Alphabet Elvis 2 hearts (man that must be hard to make) hammer key on a key chain (crazy hard to make) screw saw chair hand holding a glass button and last the crucifix - very well placed

Not a hater here! I love it!!! But for constructive criticism - I want the abstract! Make something I've never seen before but that makes me relate to everything I know in a new way.

Art baby - ART!

[–]y00t -1 points0 points ago

the saw and the cross are ridiculous

[–]analpirate123 -1 points0 points ago

And I thought I was cool in elementary school because i could make a crooked grove that went around the pencil.... Right in the childhood

[–]platypus15 0 points1 point ago

That would take forever trying to write a sentence having to switch out your pencil for each letter

[–]ragecomics23 1 point2 points ago

No

[–]whatevsbro -1 points0 points ago

Holy crap! Amazing repost.

[–]FupaLoofah 0 points1 point ago

[–]bonchampion 0 points1 point ago

I saw an exhibit of his work. The coolest/most tragic part was a piece of foam with all the half-finished pieces that broke as he was carving. It was titled The Graveyard

[–]eye_josh 0 points1 point ago

Jesus fucking re-post

[–]CGord 0 points1 point ago

This is fucking ridiculous, which makes it fucking amazing.

[–]MattDamnit 0 points1 point ago

[–]forrest22 0 points1 point ago

[–]shardsofnarsil 0 points1 point ago

[–]Garryfre 0 points1 point ago

More amazing-micro sculpture art!

PS can someone please tell me the secret to getting a space between the and of amazing- and the link? I'm getting disgusted. No info on how and I am on a tablet and I can't examine the source code! I tried the standard html a href code but it just shows the code not the link.
