My neighbor uses my WiFi. He also pays half the internet bill, feeds my cats when I'm gone for a few days, and clears my driveway with his snow-blower when it snows. It's a pretty good relationship, if you ask me.

[–]knock_blocks[S] 862 points863 points ago

You're Canadian.

[–]Blu3j4y 433 points434 points ago

Nah. I live in Ohio, but I've been declared an honourary Canadian by a few of my Canadian friends. Honestly, my neighbours are nice people and so am I, and we often do favours for each other.

I don't think I missed an unnecessary 'U'.

[–]HairlessSasquatch 3 points4 points ago

What's a disag-rear?

[–]xzim 6 points7 points ago

It really depends on what part of Connecticut you live in.

I lived there for 19 years. I was surrounded by assholes and rich people. A family member living about 5~10 miles away had the coolest neighbors in the world.

[–]KameraadLenin 13 points14 points ago

[–]20127010603170562316 77 points78 points ago

I rent out my wireless to my housemates. My landlord even says to people moving in, "There's broadband too - just speak to 20127010603170562316 about that". I never gave him permission to say that, the sly bastard.

I charge differing rates depending on how much of a cunt the housemate is, and I reserve the right to block it via mac address should I be kept awake by crappy youtube music videos. Nobody knows the password, I always set it up for them. The password is "davesucks"

I get my internet bill paid, and make about £15 a month profit on top of that. Because fuck the people I share my house with.

[–]xmsxms 15 points16 points ago

b.t.w it's trivial to retrieve the wifi password from a machine that has it stored.

[–]20127010603170562316 5 points6 points ago

No, Dave is a horrible specimen of a person. I occasionally tweet about how much of a dick he is. He gets charged more for his wireless access, and the one that gets it turned off. He's a cock.

[–]crownedsparrow 4 points5 points ago

[–]progre77 14 points15 points ago

[–]llanes1990 22 points23 points ago

Shouldn't paying half the internet bill be sufficient for shared use of the wifi?

[–]Bethurz 36 points37 points ago

The other stuff is just being a good person/neighbour. I don't think they do it for any other reason.

[–]sapo916 2 points3 points ago

Neighbors helping each other out. Shocking concept!

[–]Itza420 4 points5 points ago

I'm sure they reciprocate the other things as well.

Plot twist: its her husband

[–]sm9t8 16 points17 points ago

He wasn't when he started, but this is a 21st Century Common Law marriage.

[–]pornmonger 12 points13 points ago

Careful with that. You're likely breaching your ISPs contract.

[–]Denvercoder8 19 points20 points ago

What?! Are there seriously ISPs in the USA that don't allow you to use the connection by more than 1 person/household? I just can't see any rational reason why you'd want to do that, and even less to accept such a contract.

[–]jjbetan 10 points11 points ago

I think it's more of the renting part. Some might not allow you to charge for access to your Internet.

[–]anonym0ose 13 points14 points ago

hello? ISP? Yes I was just wanting to ask your permission to charge my neighbor cash to let him share my internet, said no one ever.

[–]austeregrim 4 points5 points ago

You don't share your electricity. You don't share your water main. You probably don't share your telephone, who uses party lines anymore?

If you want to share/rent your internet, you're supposed to get a business line.

But if you "steal" by using other's wifi (in the USA), it's on the legal ground of hacking. Which is defined by the un-authorized use of processing power of someone elses computer/processor (router in this case). If you record wifi without actually connecting, it's completely legal, because they are using radio signals which defined by the FCC is acceptable; although use of the information obtained may be unethical or illegal.

[–]PennyFabricArt 0 points1 point ago

Regardless of the current legal precedence (what the hell, I can hypothetically ignore that for my philosophical argument - that's what the internet's for, right?), I'm hacking my neighbor's electricity if I run a long extension cord onto his exterior outlet, or stealing his water if I drop a pump into his well cap. Neither his electricity nor his water flow into my house, without my consent. So those actions make me a trespasser and thief.

If he doesn't act to password lock his internet, he's broadcasting it into my house, and if it's in my house, I can use it. If he throws money on my doorstep, I can pick it up. If he plants an apple tree on my lawn, I get to take those apples. I think it's definitely arguable whether something that my neighbor chooses to place in my house is "off limits" to me. It's up to him to secure it. If he fails, the consequences are his own.

[–]akuseri 221 points222 points ago

In Finland, a law was passed that made it legal to use all unprotected wifi. If you don't protect your wifi, it's the same as saying that it's free to be used by everyone.

[–]reallyangrydinosaur 26 points27 points ago

How many people are out there that know how to monitor their network but don't know how to put a password on their wireless?

[–]Mountshy 17 points18 points ago

I just assume that most of the people that know how to monitor, but don't put a password on it do so intentionally. I fear those kind of people.

[–]bmfbg 91 points92 points ago

I never thought it would even be a legal issue.

[–]iamnotanumber10 9 points10 points ago

People where using it as a way to get out of trouble for piracy.

"My wifi is open, it could have been anyone".

Then they realised the law couldn't work because it trashed the idea of 'official' public wifi -- like in McDonalds.

[–]gillyguthrie 3 points4 points ago

McDonalds, and all other courtesy WiFi hotspots are protected by a gateway that requires you accept their ToS to use their service.

It's really quite exploratory to take risks in the field of legal Internet issues. It's becoming self-evident that the nature of the Internet is based upon file-sharing and that to suppress it is to discourage progress. However, the business kings of the arts and entertainment empires have the money and, sadly, the wherewithal, to combat this free nature of the Internet throughout the ages until the dynasty finally dies out.

[–]kojak488 21 points22 points ago

It quickly becomes one when people abuse the wifi access with hacking, illegal downloading, etc.

[–]Snow88 30 points31 points ago

Same as the US. We actually have a legal precedent based of a ruling on unencrypted sattelite TV signals.

[–]danlboone 8 points9 points ago

wait, really?

[–]Captainpatch 5 points6 points ago

There's a legal precedent that is similar (in some states, I haven't heard of a case going to federal courts) in the US based on the fact that by default unencrypted wifi routers broadcast an advertisement that they are open (if they are set to broadcast an SSID) which can be interpreted as an invitation. It's essentially like yelling "we're open!" as loud as you can while standing in front of an open door and then trying to sue anybody who steps through, when you understand the technology it just doesn't make sense to rule otherwise.

[–]IntentToContribute 57 points58 points ago

Sounds like my mom, she said she owns the property, and the airspace above the property all the way into spaaaaaaace, and that internet is in her airspace.

Edit: my mom doesn't understand how the internet works.

[–]DrHenryPym 60 points61 points ago

That's how I justify stealing satellite television. Quit beaming your content on my yard, and I'll quit unscrambling it.

[–]IntentToContribute 15 points16 points ago

You damn kids with your beams and internets!

[–]LEGITIMATE_SOURCE 6 points7 points ago

Teach me wise one

[–]VaughanThrilliams 12 points13 points ago

'Cuius est solum, eius est usque ad coelum et ad inferos' :[for] whoever owns [the] soil, [it] is theirs all the way [up] to Heaven and [down] to Hell

Old Latin legal maxim from my law textbook

[–]KerrickLong 5 points6 points ago

Well, the Supreme Court Of The United States struck that down a long time ago. United States v. Causby, 1946.

[–]Itza420 5 points6 points ago

I mean, you can own airspace. I'm assuming that your mom is just confused.

[–]IMAPocketWhaleAMA 3 points4 points ago

This begs an interesting question. How far up do homeowners own?

[–]norsethunders 9 points10 points ago

The dividing line between the portion of the airspace in the public domain and the portion protected as an incident of land ownership against invasions by aircraft, is the line delineated by the Federal Aviation Administration as the minimum safe altitude of flight[ix].

http://aviation.uslegal.com/ownership-of-airspace-over-property/

The FAA minimum safe altitude over any structure or person is 500 ft.

[–]IntentToContribute 2 points3 points ago

Interesting, and I assume within those 500 ft is where the wifi internet lives?

[–]brellscoll 69 points70 points ago

In order for a nonphysical invasion (such as the transmission of an electromagnetic signal) to be considered a trespass, it must result in an actual physical harm.

Source: I just learned about this in my torts class.

[–]uv0001 64 points65 points ago

Would sending 5000 completely black and rainbow pages to their wifi printer, causing it to run out of ink count?

[–]anothermonth 36 points37 points ago

You gotta not forget to add page numbers, e.g. "Page 2439 of 5000". This way you give your old lady neighbor feeding the paper on the other end some range of expectations.

[–]2569 28 points29 points ago

Yes

[–]vinfx 8 points9 points ago

Photons are physical.

[–]david-me 1124 points1125 points ago

Because to connect, you need to send a signal back to the hotspot and would therefor be trespassing in their house?

[–]metalguitar103 109 points110 points ago

It's like when a neighbor has a huge orange tree that is hanging over your fence. You know you gotta help yourself to them sweet sweet oranges.

[–]yellowpride 90 points91 points ago

Anything over your fence is yours to take or cut. If you do though, you're relinquishing their responsibility to deal with the overgrowth as taking or cutting the tree/fruit is a sign of acknowledgement and acceptance of the overgrowth.

[–]metalguitar103 87 points88 points ago

I can agree with that. God damn do I love oranges.

[–]Zuanism 8 points9 points ago

I love oranges, hate the smell on my hand afterwards.

[–]metalguitar103 20 points21 points ago

I love that actually. I love smelling it on my hands all day.

[–]Zuanism 9 points10 points ago

Actually, now that I smell it, it's quite alright (I just ate an orange a few mins ago). I might have been confused with the '' aftersmell '' of mandarin oranges.

[–]metalguitar103 8 points9 points ago

Yeah that can be kinda iffy. Those taste delicious though.

[–]Zuanism 3 points4 points ago

Well it depends for me, most mandarin oranges I eat taste quite bland. The ones that taste well on the other hand, do really taste well.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]Mr_Incredible_PhD 19 points20 points ago

Great. You wait until I started trimming my neighbor's overgrowth from their 29238 trees into my yard to tell me that.

Fuck.

[–]diewrecked 19 points20 points ago

That is an excessive amount of trees.

[–]JakeLunn 42 points43 points ago

I like to imagine he lives next to a rain forest. He has never seen his neighbor, but he's definitely convinced that whoever he is has definitely lost control of his yard.

[–]igor_mortis 12 points13 points ago

for a second there, i was in your fantasy land.

[–]SirRuto 5 points6 points ago

No Ike, we have a guy living down the street who let his yard get so out of control that he had vines growing under his window screens and hedges blocking the walk up to his door. Looked like fucking Jumanji.

[–]Mixed-Signals 25 points26 points ago

Don't touch the lemons.

[–]LibraryNerdOne 22 points23 points ago

And with that, a mighty cheer went up from the heroes of Shelbyville. They had banished the awful lemon tree forever, because it was haunted. Now let's all celebrate with a cool glass of turnip juice.

[–]iMarmalade 6 points7 points ago

Likely to light your house on fire?

[–]brianbrianbrian 26 points27 points ago

That and if you're a lemon stealing whore... well, things happen...

[–]Frix 7 points8 points ago

[–]red321red321 5 points6 points ago

Don't be a lemon stealing whore.

[–]reddog2020 3 points4 points ago

I was told it was fucking apples.

[–]poopmaster747 4 points5 points ago

If it was a lemon tree, you would be a lemon stealing whore!

[–]root88 1821 points1822 points ago

Look, nobody came here for logic.

[–]JohnAbruzzi 402 points403 points ago

Yes but the host broadcast an invitation into my house and I accepted.

[–]GhettoKid 272 points273 points ago

No, not like that at all.

[–]yummyummers 266 points267 points ago

[–]Lindsw 169 points170 points ago

Yes, exactly like that

[–]Real-Life-Reddit 55 points56 points ago

[–]Pragmataraxia 54 points55 points ago

That is just so sad...

[–]AdvocateForLucifer 29 points30 points ago

You can just see how invested she was. This was her moment. She was going to show everyone how great she... oh fuck.

[–]Jungle2266 24 points25 points ago

Did she do that on purpose? I seriously have no idea how someone could fuck up this bad by accident, there's zero forward momentum.

[–]SmackHerWitADick 29 points30 points ago

Given how weird she starts off running, I believe she has zero control of her body.

[–]sandman369 4 points5 points ago

Excellent ಠ◡ಠ

[–]koviko 11 points12 points ago

QWOPping is harder than it looks.

[–]perplexasaurus 2 points3 points ago

Still, no.

[–]DickMoveAdam 7 points8 points ago

That WiFi signal was asking for it.

[–]Quintuss 17 points18 points ago

This is why my WiFi network is called NOT YOUR WIFI

[–]SensibleMadness 35 points36 points ago

This is why I have my WiFi set to not broadcast its SSID. Also, WPA2. Also, the SSID is "fuck off". I don't think it's possible for someone to mistake that for an open invitation.

[–]nikomo 40 points41 points ago

WPA2 with RADIUS authentication and MAC filtering.

[–]8e8 8 points9 points ago

Don't forget to disable WPS if your router has it.

[–]damngravity 43 points44 points ago

Nerd.

[–]nikomo 22 points23 points ago

Thanks for the compliment, but that was basic knowledge.

[–]mcnublets 44 points45 points ago

That's how we know you're a nerd.

[–]nofx1510 9 points10 points ago

Mac address filtering does nothing. I can see all the macs that are connected to the AP, If I really want to connect I would just spoof your mac at that point. Radius on the other hand. Nice job. That does make a difference.

[–]nikomo 3 points4 points ago

MAC filtering is showing off.*

I know it does nothing, but I'm still doing it so it looks good in some documentation.

[–]velocide 11 points12 points ago

my real router does not broadcast it's ssid. My old junky linksys is open, and serves upside-down-ter-net. >:D

[–]Cloakedboltz 2 points3 points ago

Not if you forge the invitation.

[–]OscarMiguelRamirez 5 points6 points ago

It's actually not an invitation any more than an open window or door is an invitation to come in.

"I can see that door is open, therefore the owner must think it's OK to come in!"

[–]cowpunter 4 points5 points ago

Broadcasting the SSID of an unencrypted WiFi hotspot is like opening the door and using a megaphone to tell the anybody within range that they can help themselves to the contents of your house.

Using WEP is like having an open window or door, still pretty easy to get in, but you're not using the megaphone.

[–]mokthraka 5 points6 points ago

yeah but using that logic, they are trespassing in your house. and its breaking and entering if all the doors are locked.

[–]ScizorKick 7 points8 points ago

I reserve the right to shoot that signal on site so long as it's trespassing.

[–]joeblessyou 2 points3 points ago

I think the point remains in some ways because packet sniffing and cracking is illegal. It's like UPS dropping off boxes with locks in front of my house and telling me I can't mess with them.

[–]Drando_HS 50 points51 points ago

For gods sake, use a password.

Hell, even 12345 would be better than nothing!

[–]Bolt986 80 points81 points ago

That's the stupidest combination I've ever heard in my life! That's the kind of thing an idiot would have on his luggage!

[–]Drando_HS 33 points34 points ago

What's the password?

12345

Holy shit! That's my luggage password! Somebody remind me to change it! (Not exact quote. It's been a while. Correction?)

[–]pentium4borg 28 points29 points ago

That's amazing, I have the same combination on my luggage! Prepare Spaceball 1 for immediate departure. And change the combination on my luggage!

[–]Jufjufjuf 2 points3 points ago

But don't use WEP, never use WEP

[–]blue_strat 3 points4 points ago

Switch two of those digits around and it's about as unguessable as anything else.

[–]THATwasSMART210 15 points16 points ago

So this is one of my best friends status. Knock_blocks do I know you? I'm actually one of the guys in his profile pic.

[–]dandjcro 140 points141 points ago

If it's not password protected then it's legal to connect.

[–]david-me 352 points353 points ago

"Look, I'm not calling her a slut, but if her vagina had a password it would be password."

[–]imatworkprobably 283 points284 points ago

WiFi routers have a way of shutting that down if its an illegitimate connection

[–]StairwayToTruth 22 points23 points ago

Correct usage of this joke + very creative / original context = 10/10.

I think we may have found one of those so-called 'perfect jokes.'

[–]ianlan1an 67 points68 points ago

Congratulations, you are the first person to have ever used this joke correctly.

[–]red321red321 22 points23 points ago

I'm Akin in pain hearing that joke so many times.

[–]oneyeartrip 11 points12 points ago

wow. that's delightfully topical. good on you.

[–]SolomonGrumpy 4 points5 points ago

what is that from?

[–]dandjcro 23 points24 points ago

Well in Croatia it's legal.

[–]Mispelling 53 points54 points ago

But really, what isn't legal in Croatia???

[–]Mispelling 37 points38 points ago

Sidebar, your honor: I don't actually know anything about Croatia.

[–]synthfreq 8 points9 points ago

Twist: Lives in Croatia.

[–]dandjcro 4 points5 points ago

Leaving your car unlocked for example.

[–]iaman00b 13 points14 points ago

If the car is not locked then it's legal to take it.

[–]dandjcro 2 points3 points ago

No, but if you leave your car unlocked then you are encouraging thiefs to take it. So if he takes your car both of you are screwed.

[–]michaelmclees 5 points6 points ago

This is more legit than many people think.

Attorney here.

[–]kaylakaylakayla 3 points4 points ago

Mispelling

Heh.

[–]Mispelling 3 points4 points ago

That hurts my feelings. Don't laugh at me please. I'm just a person or a dog.

[–]cube1701 6 points7 points ago

Google were fined for doing that in the UK.

[–]RoboticOverlord 14 points15 points ago

as i recall (could be wrong though) they weren't fined for connecting to unsecured wireless, they were fined for doing drive by packet captures of unsecured wireless networks. You don't have to connect to the network to snoop on the traffic.

[–]mrbooze 14 points15 points ago

Arguably you shouldn't have to for the same reason brought up in this discussion. You are broadcasting data onto a public street. It's like saying you have the right to shout secrets out your window but nobody is allowed to listen.

[–]Azuaron 8 points9 points ago

Look, if you're not going to build a Faraday cage around your home, you can't complain about wayward signals.

[–]Storemanager 34 points35 points ago

Passive smoking is stealing too!

[–]knightjohannes 6 points7 points ago

Hey, listen, I just asked for an IP address and your router said yes! Then I asked for some DNS servers and your router said yes! And then I asked for a few packets from google.com - and your router allowed it. I was just asking, politely. Look, my mail client even said EHLO! ;)

Open wifi should be just that, open. If you wanted it protected, you should have applied a password.

[–]zuisei 14 points15 points ago

Who else expected a funny WiFi name?

[–]clamsmasher 4 points5 points ago

It's called unauthorized access, not stealing.

[–]ckb614 6 points7 points ago

You can always count on Reddit to dissect a stupid joke.

[–]FunkyDuncan 3 points4 points ago

Using unprotected wifi is like someone putting a fresh pie on your window sill and walking away.

[–]shtaffa 2 points3 points ago

I should follow this same logic. On my property, I own it. Start putting those chains in my basement to use. Door to door salesman and that cutie down the street, I'm looking at you.

[–]elbruce 0 points1 point ago

Using an unsecured WiFi router isn't stealing at all. If they don't want anybody else to use it, they can put a password on it.

[–]RuelasEscobar 2 points3 points ago

My friends cousin would get pissed at his neighbors whenever the internet was lagging. Like why the fuck are they using their own internet?

[–]TigerWylde 3 points4 points ago

damn it I hate when people use their own shit.

Stop making phone calls near my house. You are all trespassing.

I have an open wifi network set up, it's called "DoNotUse", but it's open.

I log every packet that goes across it, and I block port 443/tcp. I reserve the right to do anything I want with the data once it's on my network.

Came here to make sure someone had quoted/posted this ricky quote. Reddit never lets me down.

[–]dustbin3 8 points9 points ago

This is what is wrong with America: "According to Winnebago County State's Attorney Paul Logli, unauthorized access of a WAP is illegal in Illinois, even if the network is unprotected. Those who succumb to the temptation of unauthorized free WiFi face the possibility of a year in jail in addition to fines." A year in jail for logging onto an open wifi. I realize this probably isn't enforced much, but when nearly everything comes with a jail sentence, it isn't hard to use that power to imprison minorities and make prisons a big business. Which of course is what has happened.

You lost me at minority, what does that have to do with using an open wifi?

[–]kaylakaylakayla 18 points19 points ago

He's saying that bullshit laws lead to discrimination in law enforcement.

A bit of a tangent, but most likely true.

[–]cattreeinyoursoul 4 points5 points ago

Right. Seems like more of an excuse to imprison college-aged hipsters with iPhones than racial minorities.

Um <nerd voice> actually, an intangible object cannot commit a trespass. There may be cause of action under nuisance law, but not trespass.

Um <second nerd voice> actually, RF signals are carried by photons which are particles/waves but under the law they are intangible.

[–]Infinitopolis 2 points3 points ago

Is smoke intangible? What about smog?

Well you'd reply with a signal going through his home. Then through his cables, to his internet provider.

TL;DR Put a sodding password on your wifi

[–]the__itis 1 point2 points ago

Because when you use the signal your signal is then trespassing on your neighbors property, then their equipment and then their paid for bandwidth.

[–]GetSuhd 0 points1 point ago

Trespass involves physical invasion. This would properly fall under a nuisance, but would not satisfy the relevant unreasonable, negligent, or reckless standard

[–]GetAJob5000 0 points1 point ago

Being funny or just ignorant?

[–]jacobsaarela 1 point2 points ago

I'm not stealing your WiFi, your WiFi is stealing my living space.

[–]adillyo 0 points1 point ago

That is great that you and your neighbor have a good relationship.

[–]geyseks 0 points1 point ago

best not tell him about the radio, bet he would be really mad then

[–]Barnacules 0 points1 point ago

I feel the same way about satellite signals and Cell phone signals too.
