Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  6. No animated images. Please submit them to /r/gif, /r/gifs, or /r/reactiongifs instead.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

As a non American, what's with Florida?

[–]Numl0k 28 points29 points ago

If I understand correctly, there's always some voting drama there. They seem to be unable to tally up the votes correctly, and there always seems to be talk of voter fraud.

[–]feetslapper 5 points6 points ago

and faulty voting machines and confusing ballots and dim voters

[–]__Adam 35 points36 points ago

It's America's wang

[–]koramar 11 points12 points ago

Florida has had a recent history of taking forever to count their votes and voter fraud, luckily Florida doesn't matter this election so we don't have to sit and wait on them to finish counting. So instead of being declared a red or a blue state its still grey.

[–]Ducksaucenem 5 points6 points ago

Floridian here. Florida has a very large population with very diverse beliefs. It also has a very high voter turnout. Unlike most states, in Florida usually every vote has to be counted and if a highly populated county ( Broward) is unable to properly prepare voting can last well past midnight. Also fraud occurs. Apparently we can be bought. Either way it's always very close in Florida. This year it just didn't matter.

TLDR: Lots of different voters.

What the hell is a "spokestotum" and why does Obama have one?

[–]gevrwx 350 points351 points ago

It's a big pole with angry carved faces on it. It speaks for Obama.

[–]fictionalsleep 229 points230 points ago

That would be fucking terrifying. And would guarantee he'd never lose a debate. SPOKESTOTUM HAS SPOKEN.

[–]MaxIsAlwaysRight 88 points89 points ago

With the voice of Olmec.

[–]philqw 84 points85 points ago

The writer is angry. Very angry. Almost Ted Nugent-angry. Things like spellchecking and copyediting are for libruls.

Here are the top Google results if you search for his name, btw. Spot the pattern.

[–]smeezy 28 points29 points ago

You know you're reading the Wall Street Journal, right? This is par for the course.

[–]swiley1983 35 points36 points ago

Decent reporting and features but the Op-Ed is literally Fox News in print.

[–]Belacqua 8 points9 points ago

it sounds like a portmanteau of "spokesperson" and "factotum."

Now I know why my dog is unimpressed by pie charts.

[–]wahoyaho 16 points17 points ago

Wow that's cool. Is there a website that can transform a regular photo into something a dog might see with their limited color spectrum?

[–]eykei 8 points9 points ago

[–]cycloethane87 139 points140 points ago

Thank you for being "that guy" so I didn't have to. I feel like this is far too common a misconception.

[–]rythmik1 131 points132 points ago

Pretty sure the dog is still unimpressed with the pie charts.

[–]AHCretin 568 points569 points ago

No, your dog is unimpressed by pie charts because pie charts suck.

Sincerely,

Some guy who makes graphs for a living.

[–]I_Too_Drunk_For_this 442 points443 points ago

What about 3D pie charts?

Yours,

Someone who works in an office where all senior managers think adding a 3D effect to charts makes them better.

[–]accostedbyhippies 21 points22 points ago

Pray they don't figure out how to do that thing in Powerpoint where you can make the pieces of the chart grow to different sizes.

Those were dark days.

[–]uox 11 points12 points ago

3D pie charts have their place in Powerpoint presentations, but I'd use 2D for all official documentation.

[–]evileeyore 7 points8 points ago

3D pie charts have no place in business.

They serve one purpose and that is to create a misleading interpretation of the facts.

[–]dolichoblond 9 points10 points ago

Upvoted for sympathy. I have trouble physically controlling my emotions when charts are animated for no reason whatsoever. Been caught rolling my eyes more than once at people far senior to me.

Don't care, your slide deck makes me ill. Congrats, you found the animate/3D button. The info you gave me didn't even deserve a chart, let alone an animated one. If you're in the room and can't visualize what 30% "looks like", you shouldn't be in the room.

[–]blaziken311 23 points24 points ago

You mean... a graphographer?

[–]daemon14 135 points136 points ago

This worked way too perfectly.

[–]meridon 202 points203 points ago

I even surprised myself with that comment.

[–]Ghostwoif123 25 points26 points ago

It's better than a comment I heard earlier from some hungover girl. "hahaha i was like totally 50 shades of fucked up last nightttt". O_ookkay.

[–]ChrissiQ 6 points7 points ago

But that's the actual phrase often used in the book... she usually calls Christian "fifty shades of fucked up" which is where the book's title comes from - Christian's last name is Grey.

Source: I had to read the book for work. Go ahead, ask where I work. No, I didn't enjoy the book, it's like it was written for toddlers. Sexy, sexy toddlers. Disturbing.

[–]SquirrelsAreAwesome 26 points27 points ago

The word you're looking for is "plagiarized". You should flattered that someone repeated it, they obviously thought it was funny, though it would have been nice if they referenced the original author.

[–]kimcheekumquat 80 points81 points ago

Just to clarify: I messaged him to say that I "stole" his poem and put a source on it and now he's going batshit insane.

[–]fb39ca4 131 points132 points ago

[–]Rizzpooch 126 points127 points ago

it is plagiarism in this case, however

[–]petrichor_28 60 points61 points ago

No because he sourced it. He did say my poem at the beginning but he ends with the source. Plagiarism is when you don't source it.

[–]IKillGrammarNazis 43 points44 points ago

Sourcing is a way of prevention. Plagerism is claiming something thats not yours as your own. Since he called it his poem, he implied it was his. Ergo it would be plagerism

[–]Dritz 4 points5 points ago

I can't verify this myself, but a separate thread further up claims he initially did not source the poem, but edited it in when others pointed out it wasn't his. Sounds like plagiarism until called out on it...

[–]Rizzpooch 4 points5 points ago

Pretty sure that was an edit after Anonymous went completely insane

[–]qp0n 176 points177 points ago

[–]chemistry_teacher 26 points27 points ago

Waitaminnit! How do you pronounce the "BBB" part? Is that like giving a raspberry, or did you really mean just one "B".

Your "R" and "MMM" are interesting. Even though they are vowels, they can be pronounced over a much longer time than letters like "B".

:D

[–]a_talking_face 110 points111 points ago

Even though they are vowels

It's a good thing you're a chemistry teacher and not an english teacher.

[–]phoebus67 51 points52 points ago

Do we name him Robama or Omney? I prefer Robama, for the record.

[–]Zacke0987 75 points76 points ago

Obamney.

[–]jellytime 53 points54 points ago

More like Brobama.

[–]ScreenPrint 26 points27 points ago

I hear people say this sometimes, but I really dont see how they are the same people. They have very differnt views, andn if Romney was elected the Country would have taken a differnt path...

I would ask how you think Obama and Romney are the same but I really think its a stupid question about a statement that is so vapid that some people think it makes sense.

[–]mysticrudnin 27 points28 points ago

Those people are looking at just a handful of key issues that are important for them. Where they differ doesn't matter when they are similar on these important issues. They may as well be the same.

I think that's how it goes. Personally they are very different, when I look at issues I care about.

[–]obseletevernacular 7 points8 points ago

How can people just ignore the fact that different issues are important to different people though? How can it "not matter" where they're different if those differences can have huge impacts on women, members of the LGBT community, children of illegal immigrants, people with pre-existing health conditions, etc?

I'm a straight, male citizen with no health problems but I realize that the country is composed of different people who value different political platforms because they may have serious implications for them. Yeah, I wish the candidates differed substantially on income inequality and marijuana prohibition among other issues, but my specific situation isn't representative of the entire nation's.

[–]IFUCKINGLOVEMETH 52 points53 points ago

Some libertarians (myself included) have a sense that democrats and republicans are essentially part of the same machine.

After all, check out Obama's cabinate appointments.

[–]P4-FSH 38 points39 points ago

It's not that it's exactly the same team, it's that there are many things on which both D and R agree such that if you don't like those policies you're out of luck in the mainstream. Such policies include military adventurism, the war on drugs, and and the erosion of civil liberties in favor of ineffective security theater.

[–]parallellines 5 points6 points ago

It's indipendents in general. I'm no libertarian, but I calls them like I sees them. PATRIOT? Bush. Anti Terrorism Omnibus? Clinton.

Remember back in 2008 when Obama said Guantanamo would be dismantled along with the worst parts of the PATRIOT act? Yeah...

[–]LeonTrotsky_on_speed 4 points5 points ago

As a socialist, I can agree with you on that. Democrats and republicans are the same party with two names. They say different things, and accomplish the same things.

[–]sirernestshackleton 94 points95 points ago

Where did you get yours? Here's mine. http://imgur.com/rjltc

[–]playdthepainter 10 points11 points ago

If the source is AP, then any newspaper can use it if they're a part. It really then depends on whether or not the paper is printing in color, and if they have competent editors on hand to notice that in grayscale it's all the same tone.

Source: I work at a newspaper

[–]YourOpinionFuckIt 26 points27 points ago

The Photoshop.

[–]whateverbro 8 points9 points ago

It was probably just printed elsewhere.

[–]CAPS_LOCK_LIAR 31 points32 points ago

Post it to r/Atheism and include some random, false anecdote on how this has to do with christianity.

[–]justwantDota2 78 points79 points ago

No they didn't. How can you complain it got downvoted 5 minutes after your submission to a slower subreddit?

[–]HighVoltageTurtle 214 points215 points ago

To be fair, he has got a downvote, therefore it was downvoted.

[–]sirernestshackleton 90 points91 points ago

Really? Today's WSJ Opinion, printed in color.

http://imgur.com/rjltc

[–]sleeplessone 39 points40 points ago

It's quite possible that they printed some batches in black and white before catching it and decided to just ship them out since there were relatively few.

[–]gunnarrambo 68 points69 points ago

The WSJ, being a national newspaper, probably has printing facilities all over the country (and likely the world) to ensure delivery.

It could have come from any of those facilities.

[–]Lochmon 32 points33 points ago

What's a spokestotum?

[–]secondarmor 18 points19 points ago

[–]ljfaucher 119 points120 points ago

as a cartographer and teacher, I really want to use this as a (bad) example!! can you tell me the source / date of this publication? thanks

[–]brunswick 46 points47 points ago

It looks like it's from the WSJ. It would have to be either Wednesday's or today's.

[–]grimguitar 178 points179 points ago

Look at all the white space between the grey! That is just unacceptable. Damn Obama and his accursed basketball.

[–]ashwinmudigonda 99 points100 points ago

Hey guys, I am color blind and slightly stupid.

Is this a joke? In that all states are the same color (to me at least) and therefore there is no "divided America"?

Or is it that the white lines separating each state means that the entire country is fractured?

[–]pooterpon 191 points192 points ago

A newspaper printed a color coded US map in black and white, so it's all gray to everyone.

Being color blind must confuse the fuck out of you when you see something like this.

[–]ptabs226 104 points105 points ago

Or did the OP take a black and white pic of a color newspaper page...

[–]StumpyMcStump 49 points50 points ago

narrows eyes....

[–]HoboSpider 23 points24 points ago

[–]RiOrius 16 points17 points ago

The picture is in black-and-white, so (I presume) you're seeing exactly what we see.

It's a mistake by the newspaper, which I imagine wanted to print the electoral map and yammer on about how all these red states hate Obama.

[–]TheFlyingWalrus 3 points4 points ago

Yes, they're all the same colour.

[–]red321red321 20 points21 points ago

"Look at that subtle off-white coloring; the tasteful thickness of it."

[–]Gargilius 516 points517 points ago

...and now you guys know how it feels to look at color coded maps or infographics when you are color blind.

[–]sophie_hp 226 points227 points ago

Or reading the color code of a resistor.

[–]edgarwilliamfrye 124 points125 points ago

I changed my electrical engineering major because of this.

[–]andreif 32 points33 points ago

I did IT in highschool and we also had some electrical engineering and electronics labs, I always had issues with reading the resistors due to my red/green color blindness. Instead I just measured them to be sure and never thought anything of it. The professor when he saw this was shocked and suggested I change my career choices. I wanted to slap him right then and there, because he disregarded that I was best in class anyway and that it wouldn't matter anyway to most of us, who would continue in IT, as did I, as I just continued with computer science in university. Just a rant.

[–]thornae 6 points7 points ago

... I just measured them to be sure and never thought anything of it. The professor when he saw this was shocked and suggested I change my career choices.

Fuck that guy. I'm not colour blind, and I often test my resistors to be sure - it takes a couple of seconds, and makes a good sanity check. Yes, colour blindness could be a bit of a problem in EE when you're trying to solder the dark blue wire into slot 1 and the dark purple wire into slot 2, but there are plenty of ways around it, if that's your chosen field.

[–]NashMcCabe 76 points77 points ago

I married my wife because of this.

I once pooped a gold brick.

[–]NashMcCabe 47 points48 points ago

Too bad you didn't poop a gold dodecahedron. I would have paid good money to see that.

[–]Prufrock451 84 points85 points ago

A man who poops gold doesn't need your money

Barely any color blind person sees in only shades of gray. This is extremely rare, and not many cases are seen.

Almost all have difficulty distinguishing between certain shades of color like Red and Green, or Purple and Yellow.

A more appropriate term would be "Color Vision Deficiency".

Source: I'm colorblind, we all see color.

[–]AOEUD 60 points61 points ago

He wasn't saying that everything is grey, he's saying that there's effectively no colour coding, as in this case.

[–]Gorillaz_Noodle 14 points15 points ago

Ah, good point.

For me, I can always tell the difference between the colors. They don't look exactly the same, but they may look extremely similar.

I wouldn't mix up red and blue.

[–]yorrick21 11 points12 points ago

Red/green colorblindness is relatively common.

The most famous case of a company that fucked up was Toyota (I think?) They came out with a car a few decades back that had an illuminated red dashboard with green numbers/letters. For someone who's colorblind, when it got dark, the dashboard became monochromatic and drivers couldn't read the speedometer or anything else.

[–]battleschooldropout 13 points14 points ago

I was everyone's favorite contestant on, "What color is this?"

Red-Green

Blue-Purple

Light Green-Yellow

Green - Brown

Red-Brown

If they are together, I can usually see a difference and guess which is which... but colors by themselves are almost entirely a guessing game to me.

*Forgot Orange-Green...

"We painted orange lines on the field so everyone could see them easily!"

[–]killiangray 9 points10 points ago

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but isn't "color blindness" actually a difficulty distinguishing between certain specific colors (like red and green)? Even dogs don't see the world entirely in grey-scale, I sort of doubt that colorblind people do as well...

As a pressmen who prints the WSJ 6 days a week I can tell you that this particular page was sent to us in color (we work on contracts) but because this edition of the paper was so big due to the election, this press didn't have room to run every page in color so they had to run some of them in black and white.

On a press, a color page takes up 4 spots (black, yellow, magenta, cyan) and when you're running such a big edition of the paper, you sometimes don't have space for color on every page so some pages have to run in BW depending on where on the press they are placed. And when you're running 2 presses of the same paper (to get it done quicker if you're doing a lot of copies) that will take up 8 spots. 4 spots for each set.

If we only have say, 4 pages we can change to black and white to make the page fit, we have to pick the page with editorial because any pages with an advertisement needs to run in color at all costs since that space was bought to use color.

Remember the days when the first comment used to always be an explanation instead of a bunch of one-liners and puns? Reddit going the way of print media, it seems.

[–]QuakePhil 6 points7 points ago

Is it cause he's black?

[–]MaxIsAlwaysRight 45 points46 points ago

No, guys, print media is totally still relevant! Without editors, social media is worthless!

[–]FireReadyAim 43 points44 points ago

To be fair, the Gawker blogs are an amazing example of the kind of shit that gets published if you don't have an editor review before posting.

Disclaimer: This really isn't designed to be an extension of the Gawker hatefest, it's just the best example of a popular blog that consistently posts half-researched articles with glaring spelling mistakes on a regular basis.

[–]AccountCreated4This 7 points8 points ago

Reddit's beef with Gawker aside, their articles across all of their sites like Kotaku are often horrendous. Everything is click bait, nothing is proof read by the author or an editor, hardly anything is sourced and if it is, credit often isn't given, and the writers give ZERO fucks about any of it. "We're a blog, not journalism." Fuck off with that.

It's printed all over the country and could easily have been messed up at one of the presses. This doesn't mean that it is real. But it does invalidate your claim.

[–]supercore23 34 points35 points ago

He speaks fluent spanish and his wife is latino. The GOP is going to be heavily targeting latino voters next time. I'd say he'll at least be in the running.

[–]Hermeran 5 points6 points ago

He came to Spain once and he thanked the president of the Republic of Spain.

[–]supercore23 4 points5 points ago

This is a faux pas because Spain is a constitutional monarchy?

[–]Hermeran 6 points7 points ago

Well yes, and it actually makes you cringe. 'Republic of Spain' is as weird for a Spaniard as 'Kingdom of the United States' for an American.

[–]supercore23 3 points4 points ago

Haven't there been two Spanish republics though?

[–]Hermeran 4 points5 points ago

Yes, but Spain is, according to the Constitution, a kingdom. There have been two republics; however, the first one lasted less than a year 150 years ago and the second one lasted like 9 years in the 1930s. The 'Republic of Spain' is either a mistake or a reference to that period of time - and it's obviously a faux pas, as you said.

[–]friday6700 19 points20 points ago

They're cleaning up Jeb Bush for 2016 as we speak, sir.

[–]Cantras 16 points17 points ago

Once upon a time, circa 2007, a good friend of mine was traveling to a journalism conference. Unfortunately, she drew the short straw and had to share a hotel room with That Dumb Chick in PR. I think her name was Kelly. I never bothered learning it because if "that dumb chick" wasn't specific enough, I could clarify "the really stupid one".

My friend was watching the news while Kelly-the-dumb-one did her hair, and Bush came on and was talking. Kelly is looking at the TV in the mirror, and says "I really don't like him." [pause for hairspray, kssssshhht]. "I hope he doesn't get elected again."

My friend: ಠ_ಠ

Kelly, seeing that in the mirror: [kssssshhht] "What?"

"He's already on his second term. He can't be elected again."

"Oh." [ksssshhhht] "I think I remember hearing about that."
