Taxidermy done the correct way.

[–]ifatree 11 points12 points ago

OP must have meant to put this in /r/FTW and gotten it backwards. happens to all of us.

[–]throwaway-o 0 points1 point ago

Taxidermy: because fuck you, evolution.

[–]PantsFerret 6 points7 points ago

[–]shalteck 32 points33 points ago

This is actually kind of cool. :P

[–]jsnoogs 13 points14 points ago

Yeah. I can get the wtf-ness of it, but if I had the money, I'd buy it.

[–]Dragonfire13 6 points7 points ago

Where can I buy one of these? Legitimately, I want one.

[–]khdutton[S] 5 points6 points ago

[–]tenmilekyle 4 points5 points ago

BTW, even her big stuff is way under-priced IMHO (I keep telling her to raise her prices, she would rather have awesome people be able to afford her stuff)

[–]Ouizardus 6 points7 points ago

Quiet, you! Let the market decide!

As an aside, your comment assumes that people who can afford expensive art are also "awesome". Many people would disagree with that statement.

[–]tenmilekyle 2 points3 points ago

You knew what I meant :-) I keep waiting for Penn or Teller to buy something...as far as we know, that hasn't happened yet.

[–]ifatree -2 points-1 points ago

no, i think he meant a live one. for that, i hear you need to check out the seedier pawn shops in chinatown after midnight.

[–]Dragonfire13 3 points4 points ago

no, I meant a statue, just so I could have a badass monster to defend my stuff.

[–]ifatree 3 points4 points ago

i hope your stuff isn't very valuable if you only have a statue defending it...

[–]Dragonfire13 3 points4 points ago

but it's a badass statue.

[–]ifatree 3 points4 points ago

you've got me there. :D

[–]Dragonfire13 1 point2 points ago

although a live one would be much more badass... that would be like... like... Like one of these mother fuckers as a pet.

[–]pateshu 7 points8 points ago

I have a friend that's a little odd and is a taxidermist, living in the country there were tons of stray cats. He would kill one every once in a while if it was sickly or malnourished. His nieces 5th birthday way coming up, so he thought it'd be best to make her a vest.... out of cat pelts. She's 10 now and still loves Uncle Matts vest, still doesn't know.

[–]SabaaSith 4 points5 points ago

I never thought I could like the taxidermy, but I would buy this!

[–]supahsonicboom 27 points28 points ago

NOPE! chuck testa.

[–]ohgreatjobreally 3 points4 points ago

Catsidermy

[–]sp0wn 3 points4 points ago

Does your wolpertinger linger?

[–]Akakaburito 6 points7 points ago

Actually, as a taxidermy enthusiast, this kind of 'novelty' shit disappoints me. Taxidermy should be used to embody what the animal was like when it was alive and respect it.

That being said, this is really well done.

[–]Vok250 4 points5 points ago

I like to think that this is what the animal was like when it was alive.

[–]ifatree 4 points5 points ago

he hasn't shown any proof that it's fake. keep living the dream, baby.

[–]tenmilekyle 6 points7 points ago

Actually, no, Sarina is maybe my best friend...she is a fine artist from a long line of respected artists here in Minnesota. She has been written up in the New York Times, etc. I don't blame you for getting it wrong, but you are wrong. Also: she is a scorching hot red head and Rockabilly queen. If you are worth your salt, you would love the shit out of her...truly one of my favorite people in the world. Respect is a huge part of what she does...check out her website: www.customcreaturetaxidermy.com

[–]Akakaburito 6 points7 points ago

I checked out her website earlier. I'm not saying she's a bad person or that I wouldn't like her, either. But I don't see how I'm 'wrong'- honestly, I don't really see how there's a right side and wrong side here. All I was saying is this sort of thing disappoints me. I believe you when you say she has respect for the animals, but when I see things like this, it makes me sad to know that that squirrel will now only serve the purpose of being a novelty, something to laugh at, as opposed to something to marvel at. Not to mention the outrageous price, but that's besides the point.

Like I said, I believe you when you say she's probably a great person and does her best to be respectful of the animals. But to me that kind of thing just isn't right.

[–]subotai1 6 points7 points ago

I have to concur with tenmilekyle. This stuff is awesome. I am not sure I understand the opposition. Quite honestly, if you are going to going to preserve an animal, why does it matter how? In addition, I would draw your attention to this item on her site "She utilizes salvaged roadkill and discarded livestock, as well as the many animal materials that are donated to her". I know its insensitive, but any "purpose" those animals had died with them. What better way to utilize them?

[–]Akakaburito 0 points1 point ago

Like I said, it's definitely cool and well done. But I just don't like the idea that she took bits from dead animals that could have been mounted in their full form and respected, but instead she turned them into this chimera. It's just my opinion, I don't expect anyone to agree with it. Personally, I just wouldn't support it.

[–]tenmilekyle 2 points3 points ago

I'm just saying, she isn't a novelty taxidermist, she is a fine artist who basically invented that (remarkably small) genre. I should have clarified what I meant by wrong.

[–]errwell 5 points6 points ago

That genre has been around since taxidermy began. She's still awesome but there's no way it was invented in 1997

[–]tenmilekyle 1 point2 points ago

I meant the genre of "Rogue Taxidermy" specifically, but point taken.

[–]errwell 2 points3 points ago

remember those sideshow 'mermaids' that were really the front of a monkey and the back of a fish put together? "unicorns"? it was a popular novelty in the early 1900s at least

[–]tenmilekyle 0 points1 point ago

There's a lot of crazy stuff from before that even, but I was referring to the modern genre of "Rogue Taxidermy". Maybe it's splitting hairs! Sorry! I just adore her, maybe I got carried away.

[–]Akakaburito 0 points1 point ago

Okay, she's not a novelty taxidermist, but she does make novelty things. That's indisputable.

[–]tenmilekyle 2 points3 points ago

She also does traditional work...this is really great up close.

[–]Akakaburito 0 points1 point ago

Her tradition work is definitely good, especially the Beagle newborn. Like I said, it's really well done. It just doesn't sit right with me.

[–]Diquebutt 0 points1 point ago

I disagree that it's well done, actually. It ends up looking like pieced together creatures instead of being pieced together creatures that resemble a new weird animal. The standard points of taxidermy are weak as well(eye work, mouth, etc).

[–]Akakaburito 0 points1 point ago

The picture isn't very big so it's hard for me to look for details, over all it looks pretty good for a pieced-together monster. A lot of the bizarre stuff on her website isn't very good though, I agree.

[–]proxy123 2 points3 points ago

Gryffindor's mascot.

[–]elegos513 2 points3 points ago

Cryptozoology?

[–]ifatree 2 points3 points ago

it's just zoology once you find a specimen. and this is obviously 100% legit.

Reminds me of the dragon you ride in Secret of Mana

[–]justdanimal 2 points3 points ago

WOW!

This is why I like Reddit.

I OWN this piece of taxidermy. As in, this baby is mine... from the beginning, back when it was several living animals. A few years ago (maybe 8?) I read an article on Sarina in the New York Times Magazine, and contacted her. I have two cats named Harold and Maude, so I thought it would be cool to have a 2 headed cat fantasy piece. She asked what else I wanted and I thought... oh, it has to have big wings, horns, a snake-tail, and bird talons. It is absolutely not based on anything in particular, like some of the other fantasy pieces.

Here's the best part. AFAIK, Sarina doesn't really kill animals. As in, she gets scraps and roadkill. She doesn't hunt. It took... 12 months... for her to find two dead white cats that matched well enough for them to be combined. When the big box showed up, I was thrilled. The piece has been used in music videos (I'm in LA), and in my last house it was on its own built in section of a wall on a constantly spinning cake platter. So for like 5 years it just slowly turned... all the time. People love it.

Here's a closeup

For any art nerds viewing, behind the cat on the left wall is Brandon Bird's amazing painting Sir Ian

[–]WorldOneWon 2 points3 points ago

Fuck you Reddit. The only one unavailable is OP's pic.

[–]tenmilekyle 2 points3 points ago

She typically does work to order, based on availability of subjects, just contact her.

[–]thornae 0 points1 point ago

I love that in the middle of all those weird bizarro hybrid creations, there's a perfectly ordinary platypus

[–]Akakaburito 3 points4 points ago

That doesn't really look like a real platypus... maybe they were trying to replicate one with like an otter body and a duck bill? I mean, this is a real Platypus. Looks really different.

[–]thornae 1 point2 points ago

You know, I think you're right. There was something bothering about it, but I thought it was just the way he'd posed it. But yeah, the bill is definitely wrong, and the tail too. Maybe he's showing what the old saw of describing platypuses* as looking like "a beaver with a duck's bill" would actually look like. Which, I suppose, is actually not too far off.

* Platypi? Platypodes?

[–]rocketparrotlet 3 points4 points ago

How much can I buy this for? I need a new chandelier.

[–]derphoenix 4 points5 points ago

These are called "Woiperdinger"

They are animals from bavarian (a state in the south of Germany) folklore. There is a myth/legend where a long time ago the Bavarians would show one of these to Prussians (people from the north of Germany) and tell them that these actually live in their woods, just to fuck with them.

[–]HappyTissue 2 points3 points ago

Fuckin with future anthropologists one step at a time.

[–]idontcare428 3 points4 points ago

Anthropology is the study of humans/humanity but I get your point

[–]HappyTissue 0 points1 point ago

I know that... It won't take long in the future to determine that it wasn't a living animal. To figure out why a human did that, now thats where it gets interesting. Scientists don't like the "Did it for the lulz" approach. They want it to be something more, something significant

[–]PantsFerret 1 point2 points ago

I feel as though I should share this now.

[–]ghostFaceKillah187 1 point2 points ago

When I see stuff like this I think to myself what will future civilizations think when they unearth this if it still is intact?

[–]lukescalabrine 0 points1 point ago

Taxidermy, you're doing it...?

[–]Kallistam1 1 point2 points ago

I would buy that

[–]oliveyoutoo 1 point2 points ago

It looks like a two headed Piasa Bird.

The elusive CatHawkSnake. A relative of ManBearPig.

[–]WyvernFlames 1 point2 points ago

I'm actually impressed.

[–]valvesmith 0 points1 point ago

I read that is "Taxiderpy" at first.

[–]gojutremere 2 points3 points ago

I could have sworn there was a specific term for this type of taxidermy. I want to say "Xenotaxidermy," or something like that.

Edit: Google gives limited evidence of this term being technical, it seems more anecdotal.

[–]tenmilekyle 3 points4 points ago

She uses the term "Esodermy"...also "Rogue Taxidermy".

[–]fugelthang 2 points3 points ago

FUCK YEAH!

[–]BobDrake -2 points-1 points ago

This should be a crime.

[–]ifatree 2 points3 points ago

well these animals are highly endangered, so i'm pretty sure it is...

[–]katzenjammer360 0 points1 point ago

I don't know where she's located, but a lot of these bird carcasses would be illegal to use in North America.

[–]tenmilekyle 2 points3 points ago

This is true! She also has trouble shipping sometimes (overseas is always troublesome) She's from Minneapolis.

[–]bigcitycrows 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, I've seen her work often (I dabbled in taxidermy for the past few years) and those always look like falcon wings to me. I know for a fact selling cat fur/skins, even in taxidermy, is currently illegal because it violates the Fur Act- not that I don't think it's silly, but I have no idea how she gets away with it when she's so high-profile.

[–]tenmilekyle 2 points3 points ago

I can confirm that she is aware of and doesn't break the law.

[–]bigcitycrows 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, so what I want to know is what loophole is she using to sell cat fur when it violates the Fur Act to do so?

It would put my mind at a lot more ease for her sake if she included her "ingredients", too; for instance, even specifically looking for it I still have no idea what bird the wings of this chimera are from but I can say unless she knows specifically what species they're from there's a 99% chance they're illegal to own, much less offer for sale.

Similarly, if as I suspect the beak or wings on this creation are crow, there's no way that isn't a felony.

It's not that I'm looking to get anyone in trouble, it's that in my experience seeing exactly this kind of thing go wrong and many, many people break the law (especially in regards to birds) without even knowing it I would be very surprised if all of this was kosher when it directly contradicts the laws I've had to become familiar with.

[–]tenmilekyle 2 points3 points ago

No idea...she does a fair amount of manipulation to make things look different...I think that the wings are typically goose...she paints things, I know that she is aware of and follows the laws regarding her subjects.

I think that you might think you know more than you actually do...she is a world famous artist and has been for a while now without incident. Not sure what your angle is here besides griefing.

[–]bigcitycrows 0 points1 point ago

Not sure what your angle is here

Because if there is a legal way to sell cat fur in the USA and use all these cool bird parts in taxidermy without getting slammed by Fish & Wildlife, I'd like to know, as someone who also deals in taxidermy and interacts with others who do so as well. I have friends who avoid using the same parts because they don't think they're allowed. If they are allowed, I would be happy to tell them if I had an explanation.

besides griefing.

Saying "hey how is that legal? I thought that was against the law" is not griefing. I cannot tell you how many times I've seen someone, say, selling a nifty little vulture skull in a steampunk case while having no idea that what they were doing was illegal.

I'm into falconry and when people see my mentor with hawks they say "WOW! I thought that was illegal!", to which I explain the process by which he is legally allowed to keep birds of prey. If we were to say "trust us, we're not breaking the law", would you blame anyone for wanting to actually know rather than take our word for it?

If you don't know you don't know, but there's no need to get defensive about it when it's an honest question.

[–]khdutton[S] -1 points0 points ago

there's no need to get defensive about it when it's an honest question.

Your honest question:

Yeah, so what I want to know is what loophole is she using to sell cat fur when it violates the Fur Act to do so?

My honest assessment:

You're a dick.

[–]bigcitycrows 0 points1 point ago

If the bird parts and cat skins are legal to sell I want to know how.

How is asking "being a dick"? If it's illegal she shouldn't be doing it and nobody should be trying to discourage someone from pointing it out. If it's legal, why the hissy fit over asking how?

[–]katzenjammer360 -3 points-2 points ago

Also, I believe you are misunderstanding the function of the downvote. Cheers!

[–]katzenjammer360 -1 points0 points ago

I have to agree with Bigcitycrows. All he is doing is asking how she is able to get around clearly laid out laws and instead of explaining or saying you don't know and leaving it at that you start namecalling and insulting. I have my own opinions on who is being the dick here...

[–]katzenjammer360 -2 points-1 points ago

That's exactly my thought. They look a lot like falcon to me, too.

[–]Funkenwagnels -1 points0 points ago

I feel like taxidermy is analog photoshop.

[–]TyGuyhi 2 points3 points ago

This could only have been the work of Chuck Testa

[–]bacilluspuppy -1 points0 points ago

This is horrifying. I think I'd just shoot myself if I saw something like this coming after me.

[–]jeltimab 0 points1 point ago

I thought Chuck Testa didn't do pets..

[–]AmberLS -2 points-1 points ago

um this would not get you a second date... just saying lmao

[–]FupidStaggot -3 points-2 points ago

http://www.reddit.com/r/badtaxidermy

Just to clarify, I'm not saying that OP's pic should go in /r/badtaxidermy, just posting the link if anyone wants to see more weird shit like this.
