Actually, I do believe there was a study showing the direct correlation between how good a states education level is and it's likeliness to vote democrat. I think this may be it, but it's lengthy

Which, as a democrat in Arizona, saddens me...

I DON'T NEED NO CLIMATE WARMING!

[–]retardcharizard 0 points1 point ago

I live in Oklahoma. It's scary how common that is here. Most people consider college a glorified trade school.

[–]Skwerl23 1 point2 points ago

I am a green Arizonian. And the republicans scare the shit out of me.

[–]InsaneDrunkenAngel 0 points1 point ago

Haha me too! Is it bad that I was hoping for Obama to win the electoral but not the popular vote so republicans would have a reason to get rid of it, and give third party candidates a fighting chance?

[–]dont_ban_me_please 1 point2 points ago

Arizona seems like such a progressive state. I do not understand how it votes red so often. Then again I'm always shocked at how blue Iowa is also.

[–]Freakychee 5 points6 points ago

Oddly enough I wikied the entry for the republican party and found that it was originally founded by anti-slavery activist.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republican_Party_%28United_States%29#History

They wanted to free the slaves because they felt it was fair to humans and ignored what it said in the bible.

See how their views turned 180 after a while?

[–]ptferg[S] 5 points6 points ago

Yeah, for some odd reason the two parties did a complete u-turn, not sure when it happened. After emancipation the Republic party tried to grant ex-slaves as many rights as possible but were halted by the Democrat party. Traditionally the Democratic party was always conservative, up until the 40's, possibly later.

[–]Grinstall 6 points7 points ago

From how I understand it, the south has traditionally been poor and racist. Blacks have traditionally been poor as well. So the democrats ran on those two issues. Once LBJ signed the voting rights act of 65 they jeopardized the racist vote which the Republicans happily picked up.

You could argue the shift slowly started in the progressive movements of the early 20th century Woodrow Wilson representing the Democratic Party at the time, then FDR picked back up with progressivism, from then till about '68 at the DNC in Chicago, the Democratic Party represented everyone from progressives to yellow dog dems who were still conservative but just voted for what they knew. In '68 that all changed with civil rights becoming a large party platform and the modern parties we see today exist. For now at least

[–]Freakychee 2 points3 points ago

It's like at one point one side said, "Hey! Lets head over to the winning side!"

Followed by the other side going, "Man where did all these idiots come from? I going to the other team!"

[–]pinskia 2 points3 points ago

Try right after Teddy left the Republic party. The Republic party became more conservative and the Democrat party became the progressive party. This is why FDR and Teddy's policies are very similar but was of two different parties.

[–]Skwerl23 0 points1 point ago

The terms liberal and conservative don't corelate to democrat and republican. They can change over time.

In European 'liberal' countries. Conservative is the party to be. To conserve the liberal(american) ways. Liberal is the not so good party because they want to liberate everyone to gods way.

[–]famously -3 points-2 points ago

So, uh, where did you get the idea that the Republican party is pro-slavery?

[–]ptferg[S] 1 point2 points ago

I didn't.........

[–]MrKequc 0 points1 point ago

It seems to be against social services, which results in a population at risk of death if they don't earn a certain income. It seems to be pro deregulation of the free market which results in a employment landscape dominated by large institutions and no way to be a self starter intent on competing with one of them. Thus cutting your access to liberty and your employment options down to working for a large institution at whatever impossibly low wages can be agreed upon. While friends and family die around you from poverty and no social safety net, the wealthy will eventually have all of the money.

At least, the current Republican party.

[–]geargirl 0 points1 point ago

Reconstruction + Carpet Baggers + Southern Strategy + Supply-Side Economics = Modern Republican Party

[–]BangsNaughtyBits -3 points-2 points ago

Which views? What views of the Republican party support slavery?

!

[–]counterprep 1 point2 points ago

I think the point was just a strong correlation between the states from the two pictures.

[–]BangsNaughtyBits -4 points-3 points ago

But there is very little correlation if you actually compare the maps. Three slaves states voted for Obama, six of the non slave states voted for Romney, and the undeclared territories look reasonably evenly split.

!

[–]crash94 1 point2 points ago

Except west virginia went Red and that state seceded from Virginia in order to be apart of the Union

[–]tralaklypse 0 points1 point ago

[–]tgt305 0 points1 point ago

And that's also why Mizzou is a "cultural" fit to the SEC.

[–]olivertwitt 0 points1 point ago

dude bro you stole my post :'(

[–]SnakeLegs616 0 points1 point ago

You could easily interpret the maps saying that the same areas that wanted less government and less laws still want that. The areas that wanted more government and regulation still do.

[–]davekind 0 points1 point ago

This has been a false flag southerners have been flying for years. The main reason they wanted less government involvement was so that they could keep their fucking slaves.

I say this as a proud Texan btw.

[–]SnakeLegs616 0 points1 point ago

Just the rebuttal I was looking for. Well said.

[–]tkmmarshall 0 points1 point ago

In my history class we have been studying that era and I was amazed at how much the parties have changed, like on every subject from civil rights, immigration, taxes, and especially how they have moved from south to north

[–]watchoutfordeer 0 points1 point ago

Don't you recall The United States of Canada vs. Jesusland map from the 2004 election?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jesusland_map

[–]Raoul_Duke_ESQ 1 point2 points ago

Those states also have the lowest literacy, the highest teen pregnancy, the lowest tax revenue per federal spending....

Red states are dead weight in every conceivable way. They could be wiped off the map and nothing of value would be lost.

[–]BenKenoobi -1 points0 points ago

And all I hear* is how ignorant Republicans are...

*Edit, spelling, and I'm from a blue state

[–]skeemo -2 points-1 points ago

still wondering, wtf does this have to do with atheism.

[–]ptferg[S] 0 points1 point ago

I've answered this question a couple of points up.

[–]MrKequc 1 point2 points ago

Enough of this post, it was upvoted what more do you want.

[–]ItsOnlyKetchup -1 points0 points ago

Atheism- The lack of belief in a god or gods.

What the actual fuck does this have to do with atheism? Answer the question!

[–]ptferg[S] 1 point2 points ago

Because I'm not sure if you noticed, it clearly corresponds to religiosity. The higher the religiosity the more likely people are going to be conservative and reject any progressive change such as slavery and civil rights. So everything to with atheism.

This is a perfect example of the constant repetition of history.

[–]iadtyjwu -2 points-1 points ago

I'd like to see a third map added, welfare states. Anyone feel like putting that one together? You'll earn some sweet, sweet karma from me if you do!

[–]MBreezy1983 -1 points0 points ago

So the implication is that everyone who didn't vote for Obama is a racist. That's totally cool, said no thinking person ever.

[–]ptferg[S] 1 point2 points ago

Yes, said no thinking person ever, because that is not what is being said here.

[–]MBreezy1983 -1 points0 points ago

so you are stating the obvious? what is the obvious then? I have seen this image about 5 times today already and honestly, it has racist implications in every instance. So what insight are you drawing that I am missing?

[–]ptferg[S] 0 points1 point ago

That deeply religious areas are very conservative, so the bible belt has historically fought against progress such as emancipation. You can find similar maps concerning suffrage and Jim Crowe showing a strikingly similar patterns. And now it's happening with same-sex marriage.

This map is about the constant repetition of history.

[–]MBreezy1983 -1 points0 points ago

Where does it say anything about the bible belt on this map? I see free and slave states during the era of the civil war. Edit: And also, as there is no reference to the Bible Belt on your little map there, why is this in r/atheism? Further edit: While I agree with that sentiment (about Bible Belters being a bunch of backwards ass-hats) I don't really think you can call it a repetition of history. Now, our governmental struggles to maintain an empire having eerily uncanny similarities to the trouble Rome faced, THAT's history repeating itself.

[–]ptferg[S] 1 point2 points ago

I don't mention America but that is clearly a map of the States! Nor do I mention the bible belt but the slaves states clearly encompass the bible belt.

[–]MBreezy1983 -1 points0 points ago

Yes, but all I see are slave states and free states. At what point was I supposed to make the logical jump to "Oh he's making a commentary on fundamental religious prejudice!" And you claim to be stating the obvious, yet what you claim to state is some what esoteric. Your turn.
