She has Cushing's syndrom...

[–]nobodynose 272 points273 points ago

This person has it right.

For information about this condition.

Mayo clinic's page on it (this may not be safe for work, but i can't tell if that's a guy or a girl!).

[–]mauxly 322 points323 points ago

Whoah! I saw a woman like this the other day. Super weird looking, skinny everywhere except her stomach (huge) and face (too big). Her hair was all frizzed out and thin, like an old white woman afro. Her complexion was horrid - her face was ruddy and had open wounds.

She was with her college aged kid, who looked sort of normal.

I wondered WTF.

Now I know. That poor woman. I thought she was crazy or a drug addict. To know that she simply has a disease, good to know. Makes me wonder about my empathy meter really. I mean, drug addicted/crazy is just as bad or worse right? Instead I just judged.

EDIT; And I kind of hate these posts. Pictures of unfortunate people posted on the internet. Insult to injury. I downvoted, and then questioned why I came for the comments...in this instance, I'm glad I did. Thank you.

[–]albequirky 61 points62 points ago

We all subscribe to the just-world fallacy: we tend to, by default, assume that people deserve to be in the state they're in. It's a way for us to justify the positions we ourselves are in, and it helps us make quick assessments of the world around us when we may not have all of the necessary information.

[–]noyurawk 14 points15 points ago

It's a less scary world when people who suffer cruel conditions are seen as having it coming, that way it won't happen to you if you behave.

[–]FatDIck9 9 points10 points ago

Actually Japan and eastern countries are more likely to attribute something wrong with a person to external circumstances. and Americans are more likely to attribute it to internal causes. There was a study

[–]ihatewomen1925 3 points4 points ago

Iirc, didn't it have something to do with language? Like the way we say "I dropped the book" and other languages say "the book dropped". English needs to place blame in order to have a functional sentence and that's reflected in our society? I don't remember, I need to see if I can find that again.

Edit: found it, and offuckingcourse, I read it on cracked where I apparently learn everything I know.

[–]repressed_faggot 0 points1 point ago

Do you remember the who/what/when of the study?

[–]sadfacewhenputdown 40 points41 points ago

No matter what the story is behind it, I'm not sure it's okay to make fun of people's bodies like this.

[–]usb95 21 points22 points ago

Thank you.

I like to think of Reddit as a community. In my experience, communities don't seek to mock strangers, or worse, publicly humiliate them.

[–]sadfacewhenputdown 0 points1 point ago

What a nice thing to say!

[–]DuppyLoLo 35 points36 points ago

Empathy depends on how you've spent your day - George Saunders

[–]DoctorDorian 7 points8 points ago

In the medical profession, you see all sorts of people. You get over judging people from it. You have no idea what they are up against. It is easy to judge people for being fat or having skin conditions or bad hair and finger nails. It is easy to judge them as a drug addict or bad diet, but the truth is, you have no idea what struggles they are up against. They avoid talking to it to strangers, but as a health professional, they speak freely. You understand that they are just like you. Even the drug addicts and people that like food, they don't want to be where they are. You learn to not judge people and to instead treat people so that they can be the person that they want to be, not the person that they are. I've never met a person that sought help that was a bad person. And the people that haven't sought help someday will.

Treat everyone kindly. They are either up against a struggle you can't comprehend, or they are working on correcting it. Damn near everyone is a beautiful person, they are just up against so much to let it come out.

[–]starryeyedd 14 points15 points ago

wait a second, since when is being 'crazy', aka having a mental disorder, NOT considered a disease?

[–]moneyproblemcure 0 points1 point ago

i never judge because i try to see me in their shoes first

[–]Vahnya 0 points1 point ago

Honest question; is this really common in Native women? I mean no offence at all, I've just observed that people with this condition and look like this have been nearly exclusively aboriginal.

[–]purpledust 56 points57 points ago

Human nature is crazy.

I went from mocking this total stranger in my mind, to wanting to protect him/her from the bigots in just a few minutes by reading this article.

Crazy to feel yourself change your first impression of someone. And really question what drives one's emotions/actions. Doesn't happen that often.

Edit: after reading the rest of the comments, I see that others had the same experience as I did. This is a Reddit moment where something real actually happened. group hug

[–]overtmind 36 points37 points ago

This is why education is imperative.

[–]iamdanhi 2 points3 points ago

I don't know, even if you're not I don't think you should be mocking anyone. There are certainly people I don't feel sympathy for the situation they're in but I would never mock them.

[–]mysunandstars 10 points11 points ago

I don't understand why it was alright to mock and judge when people thought she was just fat, but since it's Cushing's its a big no-no. Fat people have feelings too, and it sucks just as much if not more to have an issue that is "your fault" and having people constantly reminding you of it. I don't think there was a "real moment" here at all...

[–]purpledust 3 points4 points ago

Like I said: human nature is crazy. I went through that range of emotions, realized it, reflected upon it. And still came up with: hunh. Human nature is crazy.

[–]TwiZtah 1 point2 points ago

Because in most circumstances it's your own fault for being fat, in the majority of cases there's no disease involved.

[–]Jonette2 2 points3 points ago

Group hug for sure. See, we do have feelings.

[–]athennna 23 points24 points ago

Sometimes I will see people and wonder if they know if they have Cushings.

[–]Jonette2 3 points4 points ago

Me too. The person in the pic. I wonder if they know what the problem is?

[–]AmberLS 14 points15 points ago

Thank you for this... learn something new every day

[–]Sloppy1sts 46 points47 points ago

From the Wikipedia page:

Symptoms include rapid weight gain, particularly of the trunk and face with sparing of the limbs (central obesity). A common sign is the growth of fat pads along the collar bone and on the back of the neck (buffalo hump) and a round face often referred to as a "moon face." Other symptoms include hyperhidrosis (excess sweating), telangiectasia (dilation of capillaries), thinning of the skin (which causes easy bruising and dryness, particularly the hands) and other mucous membranes, purple or red striae (the weight gain in Cushing's syndrome stretches the skin, which is thin and weakened, causing it to hemorrhage) on the trunk, buttocks, arms, legs or breasts, proximal muscle weakness (hips, shoulders), and hirsutism (facial male-pattern hair growth), baldness and/or extremely dry and brittle hair. In rare cases, Cushing's can cause hypercalcemia, which can lead to skin necrosis. The excess cortisol may also affect other endocrine systems and cause, for example, insomnia, inhibited aromatase, reduced libido, impotence in men, amenorrhoea/oligomenorrhea and infertility in women due to elevations in androgens. Studies have also shown that the resultant amenorrhea is due to hypercortisolism, which feeds back onto the hypothalamus resulting in decreased levels of GnRH release.[8] Patients frequently suffer various psychological disturbances, ranging from euphoria to psychosis. Depression and anxiety are also common.

Jeeze...Imagine a normal person acquiring this disease and going through all that. This is the first time I've actually felt bad about laughing at something on Reddit.

[–]James_Holmes 66 points67 points ago

More Cushings for the pushings.

[–]apprehensive_andy 11 points12 points ago

The mental image of having sex with someone with cushings has made my penis soft for an indefinite amount of time.

[–]cattdaddy 0 points1 point ago

I have the strangest boner right now.

[–]b00ger 1 point2 points ago

Depression and anxiety are also common.

Ya think? :-(

[–]Sinnocent 1 point2 points ago

TIL... I should ask my doctor about Cushing's Syndrome... for real o_O;

Edit: I don't have the no-ass or thin limbs problem but I have MANY other characteristics. Hmm. Well, I definitely know I have an endocrine problem anyway...

[–]slimjim9059 0 points1 point ago

Ahahaha, Yeah I clicked the wiki, saw that and then hit x and came back here

[–]BRB_Im_Making_Toast 18 points19 points ago

"A common sign is the growth of fat pads along the collar bone and on the back of the neck (buffalo hump)."

Buffalo hump.

The term seems... Questionable. I suppose it beats "Hunchback". Or... not.

[–]lovehate615 15 points16 points ago

Well they aren't really the same thing. You can lose a fat deposit, but you'd need some serious corrective spine surgery for a hunch back.

[–]Rich_Tan 4 points5 points ago

The terms "buffalo hump" and "moon facies" don't seem like PC terms, but it's used all the time in medicine. Maybe not in the patient's faces though...

[–]Jonette2 0 points1 point ago

Ya the lady at work. She has the buffalo hump real bad. She's pretty educated. I bet she knows what she has.

[–]kenkyujoe 0 points1 point ago

A buffalo hump can also be caused by bad posture.

Huh... sucka?

[–]BigEasyBobcat 6 points7 points ago

Okay, now what if I have all that, but my arms and legs are fat too?

[–]lesbiatholic 9 points10 points ago

You, like me, are just on the chubby side.

[–]dj_vicious 22 points23 points ago

You're probably correct here, but my initial reaction was that she had put on capris made for someone 1/3 of her size, and that here ass was just pushed up under her shirt. It looks like her jeans are halfway down her thighs.

[–]BlackGhostPanda 8 points9 points ago

My first thought was its shopped.

[–]ptfreak 0 points1 point ago

The thing that weirds me out the most about this is the way their arms are hanging. Your palms should not naturally face all the way out like that, should they?

[–]PyrokineticDew 0 points1 point ago

Why is there blood all over his/her hands?

[–]titsandwich 0 points1 point ago

Are those hands covered in blood?

[–]Hot-Potato 0 points1 point ago

crap i just self diagnosed.... i may have it

[–]cheeza51percent 0 points1 point ago

I wonder why the condition causes fat on the central trunk only.

[–]shoganate 0 points1 point ago

Holy shit, I think my husband might have this!

[–]robbiemcgee 0 points1 point ago

HOLY SHIT.

[–]digivolution 0 points1 point ago

That is the worst fucking syndrome/disease/condition I have ever seen. I mean, jesus, those poor people didn't even stand a chance.

[–]SubtleMockery 0 points1 point ago

Mayo clinic's page on it (this may not be safe for work, but i can't tell if that's a guy or a girl!).

What... difference does that make?

[–]TuckedNip 22 points23 points ago

Jesus Christ, I hate image searching for anything with "syndrome"

[–]spacelemon 0 points1 point ago

its always good for kicks

[–]ThePlasmid 57 points58 points ago

I am sad that this comment is being trumped by teasing remarks. Thanks for the education.

EDIT: Success.

[–]propaglandist 26 points27 points ago

It's now the top comment. The system works; you just have to give it time.

[–]eclise13 5 points6 points ago

I'm pretty upset I didn't realize this immediately having just read a passage on the cortisol pathway no more than 5 minutes ago in preparation for my systems physiology exam.

[–]SinnerOfAttention 2 points3 points ago

Oh I know EXACTLY how you feel.

[–]DrKisses 18 points19 points ago

Thats no excuse for a studded belt- come on, she doesn't have cushing's in her eyes.

[–]strawbhurry 6 points7 points ago

It all makes sense now... Link

[–]Killgore-Trout 3 points4 points ago

Yep. Opposite of me. She has too much cortisol and I have nilch (Addison's disease).

[–]nightwing13 4 points5 points ago

Anyone else think Doctor Eggman from Sonic has Cushings? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doctor_Eggman

[–]stonecutterunderwear 14 points15 points ago

More cushing for the pushing.

[–]WorshipThyBacon 1 point2 points ago

Hmmm TIL

[–]LondonTiger -1 points0 points ago

more like lack of cushion

[–]Vixen__chloe 1 point2 points ago

Weird, I worked on an endocrinology case study today that resulted in the conclusion that our participant X had Cushing's syndrome and now I see it on the front page. I tried to avoid the write up, but I get the feeling reddit is telling me not to procrastinate (for once).

[–]don4593 0 points1 point ago

How does one get Brian Cushing syndrome?

[–]KTHaunteR 0 points1 point ago

It's never Lupis...

[–]DiaDeLosMuertos 0 points1 point ago

This is a re-post and somebody mentioned both Cushing's syndrome. I'm not sure if in the post I saw (which was probably a re-post too) spoke about the Just World Fallacy too. Either way, I'm a little mind fuckled.

[–]Sleepy_Sam 1 point2 points ago

There are no butts about that

[–]SubtleMockery 0 points1 point ago

Isn't that one of the things it never is on House?

[–]Eremitt 0 points1 point ago

Or she's just fat. That's a big possibility. Just say'n.....

[–]The_Jujunater 17 points18 points ago

Fat shaming.

[–]omgisthatyou 5 points6 points ago

A brief history of Reddit...

Part 1: /r/jailbait

Reddit: These stolen Facebook vacation photos of underage girls are hot! Let's fap to them.

SRS: You neckbearded shirtlords should kill yourselves.

Anderson Cooper: America, Reddit harbors pedophiles.

Admins: Fuck, we're getting attention. Subreddit is b&!

Part 2: /r/creepshots

Reddit: These candid upskrit shots of random women are hot! Let's fap to them.

SRS: You neckbearded shirtlords should kill yourselves.

Anderson Cooper: America, Reddit harbors creeps.

Admins: Fuck, we're getting attention. Subreddit is b&!

Part 3: /r/funny, /r/WTF, and /r/pics

Reddit: These candid photos of fat people are hilarious! Let's mock them and justify their low self esteem.

Part 4: /r/askreddit

Reddit: Today I stood up for my gay, atheist, tree-toking friend with terminal cancer. How have you been a brave hero and stopped bullying?

The end?

[–]qwop88 80 points81 points ago

I'm a pretty insensitive dude and even I think this is uncool to post. Just sayin.

[–]snarledas 14 points15 points ago

Maybe this post will help people not judge someone with this particular condition straight up. I had no idea Cushings Syndrome was a thing, now I do.

Just looking for the silver lining.

[–]NeckbeardPirates 4 points5 points ago

[–]VermiciousKnidzz 156 points157 points ago

wouldn't it be nice to say "fuck it, i won't judge people by how they look today"

[–]MoHammadMoProblems 41 points42 points ago

Nice try, burqa salesman.

[–]j0phus 9 points10 points ago

If we didn't judge her for being fat then this would be considered a creepshot.

[–]JustinTime112 3 points4 points ago

And remember, it's okay to use a photo without someone's knowledge for the purpose of ridicule and body hate. Hell, as long people don't think you are fapping to it you can do use people's photos for whatever and it will get upvoted.

[–]MrBrohanski 4 points5 points ago

I don't think anybody is judging her personality based on her appearance. The fact remains that her top to bottom ratio is WAY off and is unusual, thus being fodder for this subreddit.

[–]KonaKabrona 26 points27 points ago

[–]green_and_yellow 11 points12 points ago

Are we the only ones recognizing this as a repost? OP: If you didn't take the goddamn picture, then assume its already been posted ffs.

[–]KonaKabrona 11 points12 points ago

I just can't believe stuff like this can make it to the front page.

[–]KUARL 2 points3 points ago

Really? You can't believe Reddit is nothing but regurgitated material rehosted on Imgur?

Really?

[–]FeculentUtopia 1 point2 points ago

I think it's worthy of upvotes only because 90% of the top comments either down OP for being a douche or explain the condition that lead to the subject's appearance. One can hope the public shaming of OP will stick with the rest of us more than the fact that it made front page.

[–]Derekristow -1 points0 points ago

Reddit has millions of users, which means millions of opportunities to miss whatever image happens to have been reposted. Plus, reddiquette explicitly says reposts are fine. It's been a while, the picture's only been popular once, and some informative discussion came out of it, so there really isn't a problem here.

[–]xSPYXEx 0 points1 point ago

Eh, two previous posts isn't really enough to justify getting out your pitchforks. Save it for /r/funny where the same shit gets voted up three times a week.

Seriously, it reminds me of 7th grade: "Look everyone, this fat chick has a tiny ass LOL!"

[–]eddieoaots 0 points1 point ago

she doesn't have a tiny ass. she is just wearing tiny shorts with her ass hanging over them

[–]Bitter_Idealist 3 points4 points ago

As well as a reposter. This photo has been on here before.

[–]tattoo_hater 12 points13 points ago

You're in r/WTF not r/whiteknights

[–]xhighalert 37 points38 points ago

And this isn't wtf worthy in the first place.

//Edit: wow, I don't normally consider myself a white knight. In fact I fucking hate them. Maybe I'm just ugly as shit and subconsciously sympathize. Either way, no1curr.

[–]JollyOldBogan 9 points10 points ago

Without any prior knowledge of Cushing's Disease, I was pretty astounded when I first saw this.

I thought she was just unlucky to draw the short straw in the genetics pool of asses. Turns out she just got unlucky altogether, unfortunately.

[–]Balrizangor 3 points4 points ago

[–]capt_slim -2 points-1 points ago

Ah yes. Because I'm in a subreddit it's okay to be a douche bag. You play Halo don't you?

[–]Dustn323 17 points18 points ago

Ok you fucking neck beards. But I don't wanna see any more posts about how reddit hates bullies.

[–]luciusG 10 points11 points ago

making fun of people's body types?? really uncool.

[–]hurrr123 22 points23 points ago

I think she's purposely wearing her shorts lower than she's supposed to. Because her shorts fit her just fine around her thighs but most likely won't fit around her waist. So she has to choose between really baggy and long bottoms that fit the waist or wear bottoms that fit her legs but much too small for her waist. I feel sorry for her. :(

[–]pumpmar 9 points10 points ago

i have that issue too. i wear alot of skirts and dresses, and when i do buy bottoms, i always take in the legs a bit. its hard to be an oddly sized person in the world of fashion, but you just gotta make it work.

[–]luciusG 13 points14 points ago

how many times i see anti-bullying posts here and now this. just today someone posted about a kid in hollad committing suicide because he was bullied all his life, and you are posting this? its infuriating.

[–]laurenwaffles 19 points20 points ago

It's really not okay to post shit like this. Taking a picture of someone & putting it on the internet for everyone to make fun of? Do you even think once about their feelings? Asshole.

[–]decavolt 27 points28 points ago

HAHAHAA it's hilarious to make fun of other people because we have nothing better to do!
