It's better with the five minutes of opening credits.

[–]diosmuerteborracho 18 points19 points ago

I agree -- the long credit sequence is what makes the film work!

[–]sdedgt 3 points4 points ago

Marv Newland, created by Mr and Mrs Newland

[–]Arttherapist 2 points3 points ago

you mean 1.5min of closing credits http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZpBkc2jK-6w

[–]beertastic 0 points1 point ago

video?

[–]JD-King 1 point2 points ago

I know it as on the Godzilla 2000 DVD... not that that's very helpful.

[–]Howard_Beale 1 point2 points ago

and the music.

[–]bigbabich 12 points13 points ago

Animation Festival Classic. But like JD-King points out, it works better with the intro.

Now all I can think of is the Monty Python opening theme tune.

[–]leafystormclouds840 4 points5 points ago

And now for something completely different.

[–]calyxa 5 points6 points ago

I remember watching this on 16mm.

[–]sdedgt 3 points4 points ago

I believe I saw it on 35mm back in the day ... it was opening for another movie, don't remember which one - neither Bambi nor Godzilla, I'm sure.

[–]Arttherapist 2 points3 points ago

This short and Lupo the Butcher were in Spike and Mike's sick and twisted animation festival in the 80s.

I rented the VHS for Godzilla 1984 so many times growing up. Not so much now a days, but as a child this opening skit was always amusing.

[–]urbangeneticist 0 points1 point ago

Sometimes I'd try a new VHS when we'd make our weekly pilgrimage to Blockbuster, but one out of every four or five times I'd go with Godzilla 1984.

[–]macogle 2 points3 points ago

Oh wow.

A professor in my department has had this thumbnail as her picture for as long as I've been an undergrad, and I had no clue.

This is actually a misrepresentation of survival of the fittest. Due to his massive size, Godzilla would be spotted by all possible prey animals a long time before he could possibly think of killing them. The prey, in turn, is small enough to reliably evade Godzilla's attempts to kill them. Godzilla would quickly starve to death, and Bambi would survive to produce offspring. In this case, Bambi is the fittest.

Maybe if he was up against elephants, which are slower, he could sustain himself. But he'd soon run out of elephants. Overall, the best prey would be humans, as they're slow, inattentive, and nutritious.

And then the movie starts.

[–]cardinalthug 1 point2 points ago

wrong. survival of the fittest is a term coined by philosopher herbert spencer. the term does not properly confer what i think you are talking about, which would be NATURAL SELECTION. darwin did use the term "survival of the fittest," but fitness meant success in leaving progeny. i see no progeny here.

just a note: history credits herbert spencer with creating social darwinism, the concept that superior human beings will be in the upper socioeconomic class and inferior human beings in the lower. it was used as reasoning for racism and motivated other movements based on the idea that some human beings are better than others: nazism, scientific racism, imperialism, and eugenics are a few. so in using the phrase "survival of the fittest" you, unawares, are referencing this era in history during which prosecuting everyone who was poor or different because they were poor or different was not only okay but also encouraged, because they weren't "the fittest."

don't be idiots.

[–]root88 1 point2 points ago

But the previous post was much more entertaining.

[–]EricT59 0 points1 point ago

If memory serves this film won an Oscar, so at least show the whole thing

[–]root88 0 points1 point ago

I used to love Night Flight! I was so young, I almost never knew what was going on, but I was fascinated with it.

[–]singing_ape 0 points1 point ago

Kinda reminds me of Monty Phyton, where things just get crushed by giant feet (or other extremities).

edit: Nevermind, already mentioned.

[–]magpie13 0 points1 point ago

I miss Bob Wilkins and "Creature Features".

[–]kilar277 1 point2 points ago

For some strange reason, my father has this on VHS.

[–]holycraprhinos 2 points3 points ago

dude, same. had a couple weird ass betty boop cartoons and shit on it too. i just nostalgia-ed everywhere.

[–]BigDaddyLurker 1 point2 points ago

My father told me about this as a child. One day i was watching a series of short stories on hbo or something, and this popped up. Impressed i was.

[–]munimula 1 point2 points ago

This is surprisingly not funny in shortened .gif form.

[–]clampSandwiches 0 points1 point ago

Marv Newland, FTW!

[–]dubstepukf3 0 points1 point ago

I saw this on YouTube 3 years ago. It finally caught up with me.

[–]skyrender 0 points1 point ago

I actually saw this in 1984 in the theater during a godzilla movie. Thank you! I've been wanting to see this again for 20 years now!

[–]cmon_now 0 points1 point ago

I remember this being shown before a movie on ON TV.

[–]Alvidean 0 points1 point ago

Never even stood a chance.

[–]fluke42 0 points1 point ago

I hate to be the asshole here, but that's not survival of the fittest. Survival of the fittest is a reference to reproduction ability, not physical fitness.

[–]TheClayroo 0 points1 point ago

I am so old.

[–]charlieh37 0 points1 point ago

My dad has told me the story a million times about how he went to the midnight movie when he was a teenager to see "Bambi Meets Godzilla," expecting an actual film, and he and his friends were really shocked that this was all there was. They started to get mad, but it was followed by Rocky Horror Picture Show, so they chilled out. Seeing as how Bambi Meets Godzilla came out in 1969 and Rocky Horror in 1975, this clip must have been a well-kept secret, or it wasn't widely distributed around suburban Georgia in the mid-1970's.

[–]Hamface_Mudbutt 0 points1 point ago

I remember laughing my ass off and rewinding a VHS to see this again and again...anyone know where it came from? I think my parents might still have that VHS.

[–]enigmatican -2 points-1 points ago

Godzilla was the last of an otherwise extinct species. Deer live all over the world and have thriving populations. Deer > Godzilla(s).

[–]barset 1 point2 points ago

He was the only one, first and last.

[–]enigmatican 0 points1 point ago

didn't she have kids at one point?

[–]barset 0 points1 point ago

It's one of those situations where I'm not sure if there's really canon to any of it. 1985 supposedly is a sequel to the original Godzilla, but I believe there was a Son of Godzilla now that you mention it. At least watching 1985 it spins it like a sequel with one of the characters having flashbacks, I believe Raymond Burr.

Edit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Son_of_Godzilla

So yep.

[–]Stacksup 0 points1 point ago

Unless you count Godzilla Jr. during the Heisei era or the Showa era Manilla/minya/milla.
