We're the Evergreen State for a reason!

[–]RPchris707 10 points11 points ago

I envy you

[–]dicastio 33 points34 points ago

In colorado, I feel the same way, brother. The same way. Too bad I have to wait for the election to be certified, but hey, After smoking for a while, I can keep it under wraps until then.

[–]roachwarren[S] 22 points23 points ago

Hell yeah!

Colorado has a much better legalization path though. I'm afraid of I-502.

[–]williamana_jones 8 points9 points ago

Yes, I'm in Seattle and not optimistic about 502 passing. I don't think it's good for marijuana at all. I hope I'm wrong but tonight's bowl is for consoling, not celebrating.

[–]FightsWithForks -1 points0 points ago

QUICK!!! Lets all down vote people who have a differing opinion! I thought r/trees was different.

[–]pyrocat 1 point2 points ago

How can you be not sure? It has an 11 point lead with 51% reporting and has been for hours.

[–]mgcornea 6 points7 points ago

It's "passed", but I think it can still be annulled by the governer or the feds, or something. I'm a physicist, so I have no idea what I'm talking about.

[–]thegrandfunkasaurus 3 points4 points ago

I love it when people say "I'm just a (ridiculously impressive job)". I wish I could do that, but "I'm just a security guard/sound tech" just doesn't have the same ring to it, y'know?

[–]Maryjane44 4 points5 points ago

I'm a cashier/stock boy... No ring at all

[–]mgcornea 3 points4 points ago

Trust me, being a physicist isn't as cool as it sounds. A hell of a lot of just standing around and drinking coffee.

[–]crooks5001 1 point2 points ago

I'm a marine biologist and it's pretty much the same for me.

[–]williamana_jones -1 points0 points ago

I guess you don't see my point. I'm sure it will pass. If I'm unsure about anything, it's that it's a good move. But really, I am sure it's a bad move. It's not legalization! I don't like that it's called "legalization". There are still huge limits and you can still be severely penalized very easily. This is not a step forward at all. Maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised by how nice the new system is, but I doubt it.

[–]StrangerNo44 4 points5 points ago

Surely they can't be worse than the current penalties and I don't think anything keeps us from amending the laws further in the future so why is this not a step in the right direction?

[–]williamana_jones 0 points1 point ago

Well, I already feel like I was over reacting, first of all. But my thinking that it's certainly possible for the law to be ammended, but in a more lenient directions seems less likely than tightening it up. But hopefully I was just having a knee jerk reaction due to my disappointment. I hope this is ends up being a great move ultimately.

[–]necron99er 2 points3 points ago

There is no reason to believe it wont be amended in a more lenient direction. Look at what happened with alcohol recently. Now you can walk into a safeway at 1am and buy a gallon of vodka.

I'm sick of people being all, " its not legal enough." Tell that to the over ten thousand people who are arrested for simple possession every year in Washington. If you've never been arrested, you don't understand the nightmare it is. Its also a huge fuck you to the racism that comes with prohibition, as if you are a minority, you are twice as likely to get busted for possession.

Its a step in the right direction, and it is going to force the hand of the federal goverment into finally not being able to ignore the facts about prohibition, and realize that the people want it legal, and they want it now.

[–]ChagSC 0 points1 point ago

As a Seattle resident, I feel that Pro-marijuana/anti I-502 are either selfish or ignorant.

This is a great day and a step in the right direction. It's completely asisine to think otherwise.

[–]dsalad 0 points1 point ago

You have to keep in mind that it will take a longer time for legislation to take effect not only within the public, but for politicians as well. It isn't going to be all unicorns and glitter overnight.

[–]drowninginthedarknes 0 points1 point ago

It really could go either way at this point. It just depends on whether they decide to abuse the law or use it for the reason the people wrote it. It's kinda fucked that we live in a society where they would rather follow the law to the letter than do what the people want the law to do. We forget that it is the people that matter, not the laws. People enact laws to maintain order, not to limit humankind. Well, some people do.

[–]ItsMorfinTime33 1 point2 points ago

As someone from the east side of the mountains, I'm not ecstatic for 502... Don't get me wrong, I love trees, but the bill itself... ahhh

[–]johansantana17 1 point2 points ago

look at it this way: it's easier and faster to pass a legalization measure now and try to make fixes later than to expect lawmakers, who in general are idiots, to somehow draft a perfect legalization measure any time in the future.

[–]RPrevolution 19 points20 points ago

How many here did not know that Obama hasn't helped the tens of thousands of drug users in federal prison? Or that his administration has shut down many weed dispensaries? He is not your friend, snap out of it.

[–]gpl999 3 points4 points ago

I had to tell so many Obama loving FB'ers that today. So many "I love Obama for legalizing weed in Colorado/Washington" posts this morning I almost threw up. Crazy how ignorant people can be.

[–]somewhat_mildly_meh 18 points19 points ago

[–]Snow_Cub 20 points21 points ago

That's Seattle every day. Sorry to bust your bubble :(

[–]gpl999 17 points18 points ago

It had nothing to do with obama dont get that confused.

[–]45_33 8 points9 points ago

So what happens to all the people that are in jails for weed? Do they have to stay because they still broke the law when it existed? What about Colorado?

[–]Py72o 9 points10 points ago

Yes they would sadly, breaking the law is breaking the law.

[–]phrancois 2 points3 points ago

I like your username.

[–]Dodgeberry 17 points18 points ago

Obama is anti-legalization. Just sayin'.

[–]richard_mayhew 14 points15 points ago

You did this, not Obama. If anything, he's going to be the one to take it away.

[–]MirandaPrime 27 points28 points ago

If Obama enjoys bud so much maybe he should stop cracking down on it.

[–]StrangerNo44 1 point2 points ago

It has been the federal prosecutors going after dispensaries. As I understand it Obama doesn't have the authority to tell them not to enforce a law if they want to. In a quote from an interview with the president:

"I can't nullify congressional law. I can't ask the Justice Department to say, 'Ignore completely a federal law that's on the books.' What I can say is, 'Use your prosecutorial discretion and properly prioritize your resources to go after things that are really doing folks damage.' As a consequence, there haven't been prosecutions of users of marijuana for medical purposes."

[–]MirandaPrime 0 points1 point ago

He could certainly speak out against it. Also he has been tougher in 4 years on medical dispensary raids than Bush was in 8. Maybe he will be even tougher now that he doesn't have to worry about being reelected.

Suddenly Portland wants to expand the bridge to Vancouver.

[–]theawkwardsloth 8 points9 points ago

Heh... i'm still illegal for another 3 years.

[–]abovepostisfunnier 16 points17 points ago

My boss was like, "Wow, you're only 18. By the time you're 21 we'll have it in grocery stores."

[–]greenyellowbird 18 points19 points ago

That sounds like a story you would tell your grandkids

when I was your age, we had to get our herb from dealers or something like that.

[–]torbergson 0 points1 point ago

I love my dealer. Ain't nothing gonna stop me from smokin' him out, even if I don't need him for trees anymore.

[–]MattPDX04 3 points4 points ago

Wait to put the NW on your back. I'm going to be running some pretty frequent "errands" up to Vancouver now.

[–]Maxemac 3 points4 points ago

Fuck YES! I turn 21 in January :) Wonder if they will sell packs of joints in gas stations and shit

[–]feelmyperi 3 points4 points ago

Is it official? I can't find a link...

[–]Puge 6 points7 points ago

[–]feelmyperi 2 points3 points ago

Gracias and congratulations!....too bad I'm just across the river in Portland, and it's not looking too good from here.

[–]nicktitan50 3 points4 points ago

Jump the state line for a weekend, and come toke up with us in Washington!

[–]tmcoan 0 points1 point ago

damn those were some close ballots!

[–]rebot 3 points4 points ago

YES!!! HISTORY!!!!

[–]akijade 2 points3 points ago

Looking forward to my future trips to washington. I'm just sad it didn't pass in oregon as well. At least it was a close vote. Maybe in a couple years.

[–]lagunka 5 points6 points ago

like motherfuckin dominoes.

[–]Unleadedonly 1 point2 points ago

Dirty commie

[–]jacls0608 0 points1 point ago

Did it really not pass in OR? I thought Portland would have had it in the bag, as I've seen people on the street openly smoking without getting harassed. Too much eastern Oregon I guess.

[–]abovepostisfunnier 6 points7 points ago

Eastern Oregon/Eastern Washington just need to join together and be a state. Leave us crazy kid West-siders alone. They don't even get rain 3/4 of the year!

[–]jacls0608 2 points3 points ago

Couldn't agree more.. In both states it's like opposite world the second you cross a certain point...

[–]macaronibangs 0 points1 point ago

Eastern Washingtonian here, I agree about the rain but come on, don't cut us out. We appreciate that the 'west-siders' carried us to this great thing though, it lost 43% to 57% in our county.

[–]NEPXDer 0 points1 point ago

Totally passed in Portland/Multnomah County. Rest of the state... not so much.

[–]jacls0608 2 points3 points ago

I'm thinking coastal cities, Portland... Maybe Eugene and Salem.. They don't make up enough of the Oregonian electorate. I would bet we wouldn't have passed it here in WA if it wasn't for the hugeness that is Seattle.

[–]akijade 0 points1 point ago

You'd think, unfortunately there are people that live outside of Portland. But hey. Washington is close enough for a day trip for me. :D

[–]BreathinBuddah 2 points3 points ago

Hey Colorado! First worst, second best!

[–]TSnoman 2 points3 points ago

Thank you! Don't let colorado take all the glory! We are now brother state ents! Too bad about oregon though, I really thought it would have gone the other way :(

[–]ramjambamalam 0 points1 point ago

Colorado:

a) has far more lenient legalization, allowing for homegrowing; and

b) they legalized an hour before Washington.

So I think CO deserves a slightly bigger share of the glory. I'm glad I-502 passed, though.

[–]Wolf_Protagonist 3 points4 points ago

I think the fact that we have more freedom is far more important than which state deserves more 'props'.

Thanks to everyone, everywhere who voted for more freedom!

[–]DownpoursForAll 5 points6 points ago

Why would you post a picture of some asshole who smoked weed as a youth and took no steps to help decriminalize it once elected into office?

Yeah, I'm still bitter about that.

[–]Wolf_Protagonist 2 points3 points ago

You mean the same guy who picked a drug warrior as his VP?

I know that feeling.

[–]Fereta 2 points3 points ago

It seems unreal. So much time spent in paranoia and fear, and now it's the same as drinking a beer. I can't believe we've come this far.

Edit: LOL I RHYMED didn't even try.

[–]Wolf_Protagonist 0 points1 point ago

You're a poet and you didn't know it?

[–]ChrisWimp 1 point2 points ago

im %100 for legalization of all drugs. i am a citizen of the great state of Washington and i voted no on i-502.

i have been fallowing it since it got on the ballot and there are a few problems with calling it legalization...which are outlined in an 8 part article that sensible Washington did. http://sensiblewashington.org/blog/2012/deconstructing-i-502-sorry-folks-it%E2%80%99s-not-legalization/

mainly that the only legal way to grow, process or sell it is with a state issued license. last year our former governor Chris Gregoire veto'ed parts of a bill in regards to medical marijuana because of a threat prosecution of state employees (conspiracy to manufacture iirc). http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/04/29/washington-marijuana-bill-veto_n_855765.html http://seattletimes.com/html/edcetera/2015829188_httpwwwthestrangercomimagesblo.html

we do have a new liberal Governor now...here is a video i found of him from last year talking about marijuana: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bkcYtSot7Og

i think by passing i-502 we have traded the ability to possess 1 ounce (its still illegal to grow, buy, sell, trade or gift) for the increased risk of getting an unscientific duid...i remember hearing something about driving your car = consenting to a drug test but i haven't fully read the bill yet...doing that now. http://sos.wa.gov/_assets/elections/initiatives/i502.pdf

[–]Mortixer 6 points7 points ago

i still dont see what the big deal is

[–]williamana_jones 0 points1 point ago

Thank you! It bothers me that everybody is happy about 502 passing. It makes me wonder if they even know what this bill is. THIS IS BAD FOR US. I really think that if Washington ents knew what this bill was, they wouldn't be as happy as they seem to be.

[–]wcpackerfan 1 point2 points ago

8'D

[–]Fizzy_J 0 points1 point ago

Anyone have an idea what will happen to the medical business cause of this?

[–]noodlescb 8 points9 points ago

Keeps operating. The legal amount you can have is an ounce, but it goes up to a pound and a half with a med card.

[–]lagunka 3 points4 points ago

Nothing, the new initiative leaves the medical laws untouched. The only difference is it will be illegal to drive under the influence of cannabis, medical or recreational.

[–]DXQRYW 13 points14 points ago

It has always been illegal to drive under the influence of cannabis. 502 allows you to drive with up to 5 ng/mL so it's actually more permissive than the current law.

There's a lot of misinformation about how long it takes for levels to drop: they usually drop below 5 ng/mL within a few hours and certainly by the next day. None of this "I smoked last week will I get busted for driving" bullshit. 502 may not be perfect but it's definitely a win for WA.

[–]rawr-barian 1 point2 points ago

Any idea what amount would put you over 5 ng/mL? Either way.. good ol eye drops.

[–]MakeMyPizza -1 points0 points ago

I read you can spike 300-400 ng/mL during the first half hour with a couple good hits. But that is with the "unregulated medicinal quality marijuana". Perhaps with the THC levels at their desired levels, it might take more hits. Maybe less. Either way, it does drop off quick, so they say. We're all different. This will be another way to find that out.

[–]BoosterSilver 1 point2 points ago

502 may not be perfect but it's definitely a win for WA.

Exactly. It has its problems, but at least it's a step in the right direction.

[–]ipooinurshoe 1 point2 points ago

Fuckin' A.

[–]new420 1 point2 points ago

I'm super fucking excited! Because we're one of the first states to do this, what does this mean now? I can just walk into a dispensary & pick up weed just like I would walk into Safeway & pick up beer?

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]roachwarren[S] 0 points1 point ago

but what do they gain from turning down the thc content? Beverages have their respective alcohol contents to achieve a certain taste, not because they were regulated down from more fun levels. I only really thought of it as an opportunity for them to sell good weed for more, bad weed for less.

[–]MakeMyPizza 0 points1 point ago

There are some words about simply destroying marijuana that doesn't live up to their standards (which we have yet to hear will be).. I just don't want to see someone pay all their fees, grow for a year, pay another thousand and grow some REALLY strong stuff.. Only to have it be torched for that very reason. To answer your question, they might possibly only allow weak THC content to better gauge usage at first, enjoy the revenue so much that they say "fuck it, who needs higher THC. 25% tax at ALL levels of sale is good enough with this low quality." Aaand no one will be any wiser.

[–]roachwarren[S] 0 points1 point ago

And everyone will keep buying illegal and the state-run distribution won't work? Sounds good to me.

[–]new420 0 points1 point ago

So when is this going to start happening? & what's projected cost?

[–]trees-and-tricks 0 points1 point ago

This day is like.... Historical or something :D STONERS IN WA

UNITE!

[–]octopuscake 0 points1 point ago

It's going to take over the course of a year to take effect. A year. I guess I shouldn't complain, but...a year.

[–]Needbouttreefiddy 0 points1 point ago

Possession is legalized in 30 days.

[–]Feenzy218 0 points1 point ago

From the thumbnail I thought this was some sort of flying saucer flying over a building that had some sort of thing to do with gay marriage and smoking. I've even seen this picture multiple times before... How high am I right now?

[–]RPrevolution 1 point2 points ago

Very

[–]rappe3 1 point2 points ago

As a swede, im happy for you guys, just wondering if its obama on te picture? ^

[–]Wolf_Protagonist 5 points6 points ago

Yeah, it's Obama.

Ironically, Obama has been worse on marijuana users than Bush was. He promised he wouldn't raid legal medical marijuana dispensaries and then he did it anyway. At least under Bush (Yuck) they weren't raiding dispensaries that were complying with state laws.

Add in the fact that our VP, Joe Biden is one of the worst drug warriors in US history. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

[–]northwestnugs 0 points1 point ago

[–]annehka 0 points1 point ago

I followed the elections here in europe and stayed up until 5am. well done, Murica. Gay marriage, Obama, weed. This is all sorts of awesome.

[–]IFawDown 0 points1 point ago

Not quite, I know gay marriage was legalized in my state (Maryland) as well as Maine on top of the other states where it was already legal. There are lots of other states that it's still illegal. I'll hold my tongue to see if the whole "Obama will be totally cool with everything once he gets re-elected" crap I heard holds any water, but I have a lot of doubt and I wouldn't be surprised if the feds had a field day in CO and WA.

[–]abillonfire 0 points1 point ago

This sucks, us here in England will probably never get anything like this

[–]PatrckBateman 0 points1 point ago

So when can we go into our local convenience store and buy a pack of joints? :)

[–]alexthealex 0 points1 point ago

late next year

[–]Leadlet739 0 points1 point ago

Hell yeah man. Proud of my fellow Washingtonians today and especially all the washingtents.

[–]skza 1 point2 points ago

Is that Obama smoking a joint? cool he's just like me! except for that whole he's okay with detaining his own citizens indefinitely thing, but forget that, LOOK HOW COOL HE IS!!

[–]fourtwenny 1 point2 points ago

Uptokes for truth. Anybody who's not familiar with the NDAA should go look that shit up. Really scary stuff.

[–]laebshade 0 points1 point ago

I'm not a joker, a smoker, or a midnight toker, but I support the people's right to burn one.

[–]GalacticPenguin 0 points1 point ago

You mean a Washingstonian.

[–]Hotform 0 points1 point ago

How long till legal infrastructure gets put into place?

[–]seinsmelled 0 points1 point ago

We did it! Passing both the legalization of marijuana and the legalization of gay marriage (hopefully, looks good so far) is HUGE!

[–]darknesspk89 0 points1 point ago

Hmm, that's how I felt almost every day for the last 5 years, and probably many years to come...

Amsterdam ftw :P

[–]turlian 0 points1 point ago

High five from CO!

[–]meth_chef 2 points3 points ago

"The Obama administration has consistently reiterated its firm opposition to any form of drug legalization."

Paragraph 3 Sentence 2

[–]valkyrie123 0 points1 point ago

As a Minnesotan THIS is how I feel today. Thanks Republicans for trying to ban gay marriage.

[–]coolstorybrosky 1 point2 points ago

Will people quit fucking posting pictures of Obama as if he's pro-legalization.

[–]fromthe206 0 points1 point ago

I'm glad it's legal but I'm not a fan of the DUI clause in the legislation. And I would personally never buy cannabis from the government. I'm glad I got my medical card 3 1/2 years ago.

[–]iPinheadLarry 1 point2 points ago

Question: why does everyone seem to neglect that Washington legalized? Do people just care about Colordo more?

[–]seafoxx 0 points1 point ago

Because Washington did not legalize. Marijuana remains a schedule 1 drug, right next to heroin. If I passed you a bowl, I could be charged with felony distribution. 502 was marketed as full legalization, they puked that shit out all over the news, and it's just false. Makes me sick to my stomach that they could blatantly lie to and mislead the public.

[–]iPinheadLarry 0 points1 point ago

...WAT!? FUCK THE WORLD.

[–]seafoxx 0 points1 point ago

I'm right there with ya. I live here in Washington, and an overwhelming majority of people are under the same misconception, not through much fault of their own (other that the fact that the only source of "information" that they avail themselves of is their local news).

[–]rabidfish91 0 points1 point ago

As an Oregonian right now, I'm sorely disappointed.

[–]thehumanboy519 1 point2 points ago

Don't fall asleep on Barry O!

[–]ksieben 0 points1 point ago
