It's unclear when adults 21 and older will be able to legally purchase marijuana in CO. Some people say tommorrow, others 30 days, and other say up to a year... Anyone have any info on this ?

[–]dustbunny88 46 points47 points ago

The governor will sign it into law in 30 days. After this point, no more arrests by local or state police officers should be made. Sells on the other hand will not begin for a while

[–]Smelly_dildo 24 points25 points ago

I feel bad for anyone who got arrested and charged with possession today or yesterday lol.

[–]DemonKing420 13 points14 points ago

[–]Smelly_dildo -4 points-3 points ago

You should post that to r/politics or r/funny or somewhere. That's Reddit Gold material.

[–]dirice87 1 point2 points ago

i'm guessing most cops will let it slide, or judges will reduce sentences if they see the date u were swiped

[–]drumline17 1 point2 points ago

Getting caught with pot in most of Colorado is like getting caught with money at Bank of America. I've had so many friends who have run into police, stoned, with 1/8ths or more in their pockets, get off with just a warning or a "drug paraphernalia" ticket

[–]LeroyJenkems 0 points1 point ago

Is the governor for it? I'm kind of nervous.

[–]mgcornea 0 points1 point ago

Nope, governor is against. Saw it in another article. Something along the lines of "the people have spoken, and we will respect their decision."

[–]LeroyJenkems 0 points1 point ago

I'm not too sure what your quote means, because it makes it sound like the governor is for.

http://www.denverpost.com/news/marijuana/ci_21527835/co-governor-opposes-pot-legalization

I hope he signs it into law. I doubt it though, honestly.

[–]rawr-barian 0 points1 point ago

Does that mean they won't be arresting anymore for posession? I'm asking assuming there is an answer. If not then schucks. I'm in Washington and am looking for the same info haha.

[–]ninja_fapper 0 points1 point ago

But you can start growing your own pot!

[–]rebot -1 points0 points ago

good answer

[–]MyMind_is_in_MyPenis 16 points17 points ago

It seems there will be a whole rush of people TRYING to do it tomorrow... Let's hope they are not interfered with.

[–]cwnc2008 9 points10 points ago

I'm pretty sure the police would have to be huge dicks to arrest people for this. I don't think police in Colorado are relatively huge dicks.

[–]Wu_Tang_Clan 3 points4 points ago

You obviously don't live in Denver.

[–]mooseberry 0 points1 point ago

Or Boulder.

[–]dukec 1 point2 points ago

Lots of locals think they are, but compared to police in other places I've been, Colorado police generally are not huge dicks.

[–]cwnc2008 2 points3 points ago

I've heard all the stereotypes and stories about Los Angeles police, but I'm a white guy who drives a blue Volvo so I think I'm going to be OK.

[–]elfonzi 7 points8 points ago

From what I understand it will be signed in a month, already established dispenseries may be able to sell to the public, but licenses won't be available until oct next year.

[–]rebot -4 points-3 points ago

good answer

[–]Makah_Behr 4 points5 points ago

One of my friends was working on getting this passed, He said 30 days, I don't know how accurate that is though.

[–]rebot -2 points-1 points ago

good answer

[–]Makah_Behr 0 points1 point ago

I'll see if I can get him in here to answer more questions if you want. I'm afraid I do not know much, because I am not personally a smoker. I just wanted to stop by and congratulate you guys, I'm pretty proud of my state.

[–]EminGH 8 points9 points ago

Marijuana is still illegal in the United States on the federal level.

[–]thisIsMyDrugAccount 19 points20 points ago

But the only way people will get arrested is if DEA (federal) agents come in and bust you. As an average citizen/consumer, they're not going to waste their time on you.

That isn't necessarily true for places that will begin selling it. While raids do happen on dispensaries right now, it's not enough to cause a serious dent in the market.

[–]EminGH 2 points3 points ago

So could the average 7-11 down the street sell you an eighth of dank or maybe a pre-rolled joint? Or will it be dispensary-like buildings purely for selling weed?

[–]thisIsMyDrugAccount 6 points7 points ago

That remains to be seen. I would imagine probably a bit of both. Maybe not chain things like 7-11, at least initially, but I could see it happening in locally owned convenience and liquor stores.

It wouldn't surprise me if some dispensaries moved to recreational sale. You may be risking more if you take that path, though. The federal government might be more lenient on medical dispensaries than recreational distributors, so that might be incentive for some of them not to make the switch.

This is all speculation; we really won't know until the laws are put into place.

[–]dukec 0 points1 point ago

It'll probably be more like liquor stores. Initially there will be licensed marijuana stores, and I could see them being sold in liquor/marijuana combination stores pretty soon after that. I doubt you'll ever get them in something like 7-11 or a gas station, or at the very least not for a while (that's because it's being regulated like alcohol, not tobacco, so extra licensing will be required in order to sell it).

[–]spoonybard326 0 points1 point ago

My guess is that due to the possibility of getting raided by the feds, stores won't want to sell marijuana if it would only be a small percentage of their sales. Therefore, it will be shops whose main business is weed.

[–]ninja_fapper 0 points1 point ago

I have a dream, that one day I will be able to purchase a pack of perfectly rolled doobies at my corner drug store.

[–]Goofy_fucker 1 point2 points ago

In the words of both Colorado and Washington voters. "So?"

[–]TheBoredMan 1 point2 points ago

I heard Dec. 9. That's 30 days from now, I think.

[–]sathoro 0 points1 point ago

Probably a year or longer

[–]revnasty 12 points13 points ago

In other news, Colorado real estate is at an all time high.

[–]Xaxxon 7 points8 points ago

Is that for home sales or just rENTals?

[–]revnasty 2 points3 points ago

zing.

[–]Mmmichelle92 2 points3 points ago

Zing indeed.

[–]Deus_Imperator 0 points1 point ago

I will be moving there in the next 3-6 months for sure now, medical was always easy to get but it was a half measure and unsatisfying on principle.

You should be able to grow any harmless flower you want without a license.

[–]revnasty 0 points1 point ago

Yeah even being legal, I doubt they let us grow when and where we want without a license. Once they(government) figure it out and start regulating and taxing, that is.

[–]being_inappropriate 6 points7 points ago

Could someone please explain the effects of this with detail? For example will shops be allowed to sell marijuana? Could people go to coffee shops and buy joints now ?

[–]elfonzi 8 points9 points ago

Licenses won't be available until oct next year, i would imagine it will be like dispenseries now just open to the public.

[–]pr0ud 0 points1 point ago

Im sure thats what they will work out over the next year as everyone keeps saying

Feels good man.

Language of the law: Shall there be an amendment to the Colorado constitution concerning marijuana, and, in connection therewith, providing for the regulation of marijuana; permitting a person twenty-one years of age or older to consume or possess limited amounts of marijuana; providing for the licensing of cultivation facilities, product manufacturing facilities, testing facilities, and retail stores; permitting local governments to regulate or prohibit such facilities; requiring the general assembly to enact an excise tax to be levied upon wholesale sales of marijuana; requiring that the first $40 million in revenue raised annually by such tax be credited to the public school capital construction assistance fund; and requiring the general assembly to enact legislation governing the cultivation, processing, and sale of industrial hemp.

FYI Colorado really did look like this this past summer during the wildfire season. One fire, the Waldo Canyon Fire uncovered a farm:

[–]McFistykins 2 points3 points ago

To all those in Colorado please read this:

Sincerely, all other ENTS

[–]VeteranKamikaze 3 points4 points ago

Colorado Ents, I congratulate you on never again having to say "Shit, I'm out of pot, let me see if I can get a hold of my dealer," and replace it with "Shit, I'm out of pot, let me go to the pot store and buy pot."

[–]Heff228 3 points4 points ago

Anyone know if this will be like a "tourist" thing? Or do you need to be a resident of Colorado to purchase it?

[–]Galcynta 5 points6 points ago

Probably any adults. Doesn't say "colorado residENTs" just says "adults 21 and over"

[–]dustbunny88 9 points10 points ago

1 Vacation destination until the rest of the country hops on board.

[–]Galcynta 6 points7 points ago

I'm lucky enough to live here. I almost started crying I was so happy when I first found out the news.

[–]drumline17 0 points1 point ago

Every time I think my life is shit, I remind myself that I was born into a middle-class white family, in the richest country in the world, in undoubtedly one of the best all-around states. and now this.

/r/coloradocirclejerk, anyone?

[–]AREYOUSauRuS 0 points1 point ago

I had just texted my friend before reading this... "2 days drive to Colorado, when you wanna take a vacation"

[–]Xaxxon 1 point2 points ago

washington is onboard!

[–]special_brownies 2 points3 points ago

CO everyday from now on... I'm a little jealous

[–]justicejustin 3 points4 points ago

hahaha so true, Denver Ents Unite!

[–]Fuckn_hipsters 0 points1 point ago

In my part of Colorado this is everyday.

[–]Mmmichelle92 0 points1 point ago

I was thinking zombie apocalypse until I read the comments. Haha

[–]ChristmasSkeleton 0 points1 point ago

I'm hoping that when this comes fully into effect Colorado and Washington set a good example rather than going "420 BLAZE IT FAGGOT!!!" status

[–]montreaux 1 point2 points ago

and washington!

[–]DespertaFerro 0 points1 point ago

Coincidentally, cannabis use in the Netherlands is lower than in the rest of Europe.

[–]3DucksInAManSuit 0 points1 point ago

The slowest smile stretched across my face when I looked at this [6]

[–]StraightAsARainbow 2 points3 points ago

Does the weather forecast say it's going to be foggy for a few days?

[–]elfonzi 1 point2 points ago

This is colorado we don't get fog only forest fires.

[–]StraightAsARainbow 2 points3 points ago

I guess you could say that colorado burns a lot of trees.

[–]Vegemash 0 points1 point ago

PLEASE don't do something stupid that the media can blow out of proportion and fuck this up for other states/countries.

[–]anorchism -3 points-2 points ago

Too bad they don't have sunny weather to help celebrate their win.

[–]KroniikBro 2 points3 points ago

Right, cuz the sun just shines around Colorado.

[–]i_am_not_sam 0 points1 point ago

300 days of sunshine brah. We get plenty of it :)

[–]Cosmic_destroyer -2 points-1 points ago

My room right now as I sit here and stare at my computer thinking about getting up and getting something to drink and write run on sentences

[–]enoch00 -3 points-2 points ago

Next few days? You're thinking on too small of a scale. Think LONGER.

Few years at least.

[–]elfonzi 0 points1 point ago

Less than a year maximum, deadline for regulations is july next year and for licenses oct next year.

[–]Spookeylights 0 points1 point ago

I'll donate to such a beautiful haze.

[–]Galcynta -1 points0 points ago

The state has to make it legal by July 1st, 2013. Any time from now until then.

[–]rancemo 0 points1 point ago

No, that's only for the retail and mass production. The personal aspects are legal as soon as the election is certified (within 30 days).
