It was a 1970's corvette with a fiberglas Daytona kit-car body. It had become a trivia question about the "new hit show" Miami Vice, that the classic Ferrari was actually a kit-car. Ferrari of North America decided to give them a real Testarossa for the next season, and the blowing-up episode was a season finale.

A real white Testarossa was used for the drive-ups and drive-aways, but the Testarossa that was used for the street stunts was a Pantera with a wet nitrous system.

The Character Sonny had just insulted a black-market arms salesman, by suggesting that for the high price he was asking that the dates on the ordnance (LAWs rockets?) were "pretty old". So the salesman said he would be glad to burn one to prove the load was still good. Sonny thought he was going to shoot at the hillside...
