Sorry, but the sad truth is the dude that posted that is likely going to do some jail time for that, and mods were likely putting a little distance between that guy and reddit.

It might not be right, but that is simply the reality. This dude has probably just committed career suicide and the reddit mods made what was probably a decent decision.

I know it sucks, but at least the info is out there, and reddit will not look terrible for allowing this info to continue to be hosted on their site. Now is the time for the traditional news media to pick this up and probably OP(not this OP) to go to jail.

[–]riadfodig 10 points11 points ago

I don't think I understand the situation well enough. What did the guy do that was illegal? Why does he belong in jail?

[–]Evictus 0 points1 point ago

I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure it's because he gave public access to proprietary information and violated his NDA with the company.

[–]YoureMyBoyBloo 1 point2 points ago

He most likely violated multiple NDAs. When you are doing tech work of this magnitude (and especially for a government entity) They jam you up with so much paper before you even get to see an SOW. This is not something the companies that this person works for take lightly.

He has almost definitely signed legally binding documents and contracts saying he will not talk about his projects under penalty of law, and given the fact this guy did not know better than to cross his employer, I would guess he may not have a ton of money saved up for the potential million dollar legal liability he just triggered. Maybe it was bravery and principle, but I would guess it was most likely just stupidity that made him do it.

[–]regalrecaller 4 points5 points ago

What about whistle-blower status? Isn't he protected under those laws?

[–]YoureMyBoyBloo 0 points1 point ago

What laws?

My point is I have a feeling OP does not know anything about the laws. If you are intending to rely on a law, you might want to do a little research about how it actually works.

[–]toobesteak 1 point2 points ago

It says in the thread that he already testified 5 days ago in court so this isn't the first time the information has been leaked, but rather since it didnt go well in court he would try his luck going straight to the people and try getting some public outcry.

[–]Deep_Fried_Snickers 12 points13 points ago

If the guy is simply exposing fraud why would he be in legal trouble?

Aren't there laws that protect whistle-blowers?

[–]chalkwalk 13 points14 points ago

Yes there are laws to protect whistle blowers. No, those laws do not protect whistle blowers.

[–]Deep_Fried_Snickers 6 points7 points ago

Well why the fuck isn't anyone doing anything about that then?! No one sees the problem in that??

Jesus Christ, the world makes me angry.

[–]chalkwalk 2 points3 points ago

If it helps, the Republicans are working on a plan to fix that. It's called "feudalism".

[–]Xabster -1 points0 points ago

Busy redditing. You?

[–]Deep_Fried_Snickers 0 points1 point ago

Well, I'm Canadian so there isn't much I can do to help out in this particular circumstance.

[–]Xabster 0 points1 point ago

I'm Danish. Nice to meet you.

[–]YoureMyBoyBloo 1 point2 points ago

Posting something to an online forum is not necessarily a recognized form of whistle blowing.

I also have to assume that the company most likely has some level of legal protection to muddy the claim of outright fraud. If that is the case then the brunt of the legal battle will only be about how OP likely violated a pretty massive NDA.

I am just saying whistle blowing laws only protect people that understand them. I am pretty sure this guy did not consult his head counsel before popping up on the front page of reddit with very privileged information.

[–]Deep_Fried_Snickers 2 points3 points ago

Out of curiosity, if a whistle blower took the issue to the head counsel and they told him to keep quiet, would he then still face legal consequences for bringing the matter to the public (if it was in fact a legitimate issue?)

[–]YoureMyBoyBloo 0 points1 point ago

The short answer is probably. Perhaps he did take the issue up the ladder, perhaps he didn't. It has been my experience that sometimes engineers and IT types do not do a great job of conveying the severity of a situation to higher ups, and sometimes they even internalize the struggle entirely and raise the issue minimally if at all (this is actual first hand experience). I did not get to read much of the thread this morning so I will give OP the benefit of the doubt that he raised the issue in every way possible, but the next step if you are completely shut down is most definitely not post it to a novelty website (I understand this is not an accurate description of reddit, but this is how it will be viewed in court, and this will go to court) and begin answering questions in real time about an ongoing legal situation.

If you have a legitimate issue, you look up lawyers or whistle blower protection programs, like the Office of Special Counsel. By outing this thing on his own he has exposed himself to a massive legal liability and time will show how it shakes out, but hes is now in the middle of it, and worse than that, he will likely become known. Being a whistle blower can make getting a future job vey difficult.

[–]moparornocar 0 points1 point ago

So it wasn't deleted? Considering this is the same post, and it is still active.

edit: I have been informed what it means to be deleted by the mods.

[–]SA1L 5 points6 points ago

It was removed. Just like when a post is autobanned, the post is still there, it just isn't indexed within that subreddit and the title can not be found via search

[–]moparornocar 2 points3 points ago

Are they able to figure out which Mod deleted it?

[–]SA1L 1 point2 points ago

Oh, I don't know. I imagine it was deleted because it didn't meet the submission rules. They should have submitted on Sat, or maybe in Politic, USPolitics, politicaldiscussion, AmericanPolitics, etc. not saying i agree, but those are the /r rules here

[–]moparornocar 0 points1 point ago

Yeah I can't blame the mods for deleting the post if it did not follow the rules.

[–]Echospree 5 points6 points ago

Deleted by a mod, in a reddit context, merely means 'removed from the front page'. The post itself still exists, but you can't find it from the front or subreddit pages.

[–]moparornocar 2 points3 points ago

I see, thats pretty messed up. Did it break any rules?

[–]Jargey 12 points13 points ago

The top comment says this:

"What the lawsuit is about is stopping an uncertified last-minute modification to roughly half the Ohio voting machines that we know of...counties that bought ES&S voting system gear. (They're also doing something in the Deibold counties but we don't know what yet. But we do have the ES&S contract saying what's up:

https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B6Fh3F6hufhDd0NuNDBwcmJYdkE [link appears to be broken, but I've checked it many times and I've copied it perfectly, advice welcome]

The TL;DR is like so...they want to add new code to every central tabulator (the main control system for each county's elections) to do better output (.CSV format so they can easily combine results from multiple counties). The problem is, they picked the wrongest way possible to go about it. They want to load new code on the central tabulator that would be able to flip votes around. They should have written a separate utility to do the data conversion on another system and leave the central tabulator data alone.

All of these voting systems are closed source, proprietary trade secret. We don't have access to the source code. There's a code review process at private laboratories. It's a crappy system but at least it's a security measure of some sort. This new code is completely untested by anybody outside of the voting system vendor (ES&S).

Which means, if they can pull this off, over 20 Ohio counties will no longer be democracies. They'll be ES&S-ocracies or somedamnthing.

What is being done here is illegal, unconstitutional and insane."

[–]Bananarine 5 points6 points ago

Can I get a TL;DR on that TL;DR?

[–]WHM-6R 9 points10 points ago

It was apparently taken down because it belonged in /r/IAMA instead of /r/politics. I get that it basically was an AMA and thus should've been posted in /r/IAMA to begin with, but it was at the very least relevant to /r/politics and I always hate when the mods kill a heavily upvoted and commented thread over minor reasons like that.

[–]jayjaya29 3 points4 points ago

866-OUR-VOTE is the number to report voter fraud.

[–]RookieMonster 3 points4 points ago

Screen shotting this.

[–]yourchinitches 2 points3 points ago

He posted it, not reddit. Leave it up!

[–]stottpiez 2 points3 points ago

mods being total faggots. color me surprised.

[–]lolbience -2 points-1 points ago

No politics / posts with political implications - Includes Activism, Call for public outcry etc.

 Why is this is WTF?

[–]TARDIS -2 points-1 points ago

Hey, OP. If you wanted to keep your ACTUAL account secret, you might want to blur out your name from the screen cap next time. Now they can find you!!!!

[–]I_Was_LarryVlad -2 points-1 points ago

And why the hell is this /r/WTF material?

[–]TARDIS 5 points6 points ago

Because apparently if it's posted anywhere else, it gets removed. That usually means something is WTF worthy. I certainly said WTF while reading it, being that I am an Ohio voter. Thankfully, I voted days ago.

[–]I_Was_LarryVlad 1 point2 points ago

I understand. That's not just WTF, that's almost a direct abridgment of our rights to post things on this website. Thanks for telling me instead of downvoting.

[–]TARDIS 0 points1 point ago

Downvoting doesn't do anyone any good.
