Did anyone else notice that Arkansas and Arizona are in the wrong alphabetical order?

[–]Msj2705 45 points46 points ago

Iowa and Idaho are wrong, too.

I'm thinking they are going by what their 2 letter abbreviations would be.

[–]right_foot 10 points11 points ago

Well, that's stupid.

[–]VeteranKamikaze 3 points4 points ago

At first glance yes, but the actual value that goes into that field when you submit the form is likely the abbreviation. It actually makes good sense that it'd be this way as its easier and more intuitive for the programmer.

[–]Thomas_K_Brannigan 0 points1 point ago

Yeah. I imagine this is so you can just type in "KS" and will go straight to Kansas. Makes it easier for typing information into forms.

[–]Z3tta 0 points1 point ago

select full_name, abbr from states order by full_name/*abbr*/;

[–]Msj2705 2 points3 points ago

Yes, but it makes sense.

[–]DaLou 0 points1 point ago

Maybe the result set returned by the middle tier has both the full name and the abbreviation. The data is ordered by the abbreviation by the middle tier. The full name column was chosen to be used by the UI team as the text displayed in submit, but the abbreviation is the actual form value, since it is all you need to be unique. Also, they forgot Alaska. Or its just the contiguous 48.

[–]Darkersun 5 points6 points ago

And no Connecticut

[–]soomba2 4 points5 points ago

or Delaware

[–]the_glass_gecko 8 points9 points ago

or Hawaii!

[–]HadManySons 6 points7 points ago

Because Arkansas is best state!

[–]Mc_Coy 47 points48 points ago

I think you meant "because Arkansas is best kansas!"

[–]cdrathekid 36 points37 points ago

R/Kansas

[–]A_Mouse_In_Da_House 19 points20 points ago

I really want /r/kansas to be about arkansas but I'm not hopeful..

[–]gsabram 7 points8 points ago

Slightly more hopeful about /r/kansaw.

[–]HadManySons -1 points0 points ago

Nice

[–]gsabram 2 points3 points ago

[–]Arx0s 0 points1 point ago

NO. I'M TRYING TO SLEEP. You've conjured up horrible memories from 3rd grade.

[–]RedditusMaximuss[S] 0 points1 point ago

My god i am unable to get that out of my head now >.>

[–]LOhateVE 1 point2 points ago

It's been in my head for over 20 years if that makes you feel any better. Anytime I see a list of the states in alphabetical order my brain sings it. on a plus side my 3rd grade teacher was pretty hot.

[–]Audiovore 0 points1 point ago

Nice, reminded me of this one.

[–]Arx0s 0 points1 point ago

Aww fuck, not this song. I spent years driving it out of my head... and all for nothing.

[–]OutstandinMediocracy 0 points1 point ago

its because alabama was in charge of setup

[–]reagan2016 0 points1 point ago

You don't have to pass first grade to be a web developer.

[–]nowayride 1 point2 points ago

As long as you can pass variables.

[–]Latch 29 points30 points ago

I hate websites that were made before Alaska became a state and haven't updated.

[–]Alaskagirlskickass 21 points22 points ago

As an Alaskan, I can confirm that I hate this shit.

[–]XJ305 13 points14 points ago

On Amazon is the worst, get all the way to the fucking checkout and your all excited for your thing and the "Sorry we only ship to mainland US." Because you know it's not like we don't have the 5th largest commercial airport in the world, a huge port in Anchorage, and our own fucking highway if they wanted to do it by truck. Not to mention bull shit it cost $40 to ship something that doesn't even weigh 5 pounds.

[–]ReggieKUSH 4 points5 points ago

Doesn't Amazon ship mostly through UPS? So... isn't it them you should be complaining about? Amazon is just the market place, similar to a shopping mall, right?

[–]XJ305 3 points4 points ago

Amazon is just an example, not everything on Amazon is from Amazon so, your shipper can vary. I believe at one point I received a package from FedEx actually from Amazon. Amazon does have restrictions on what it will ship up here though, some it just will not send to Alaska or Hawaii, no fucking clue why. We are attached to Canada it's not like we are an island.

[–]Alaskagirlskickass 1 point2 points ago

One of the perpetual banes of my existence. What the fuck amazon, get your hopes up like that and then, Bam! Fuck you Alaska.

[–]Vivtek 4 points5 points ago

And Puerto Rico.

[–]alaskanloops 2 points3 points ago

The only thing I've ever gotten free shipping on was a bowling ball. Then for a shirt it's 20 bucks. It's a backwards world out there.

[–]AlaskanSable 0 points1 point ago

Or online shopping- when shipping costs twice as much as what you're buying.

[–]HadManySons 46 points47 points ago

Maybe this is just a list of states that this website offers its products/services in. Therefore not all the states are listed

[–]Basic_ 46 points47 points ago

I think this is exactly what the OP meant. Trying to shop on half the stores online when you live up here results in getting to the checkout only to realize nobody wants to ship their wares to the North Pole.

[–]RedditusMaximuss[S] 36 points37 points ago

100% my point. You select the item. Fill out all address and shipping info just to get to the drop down for state and you are no there. I have used http://shiptoalaska.com/ when its something i cant find anywhere that ships up here.

[–]Vivtek 6 points7 points ago

Yeah, it's similar in Puerto Rico - even Amazon stores won't ship there because "it's international" EVEN WHEN THEY'RE SHIPPING US POSTAL SERVICE. Because most people aren't too strong on geography and history.

[–]7oby 1 point2 points ago

Well, a lot of products are weird. For example, the USPS has now decided they won't ship anything with lithium batteries outside the continental 48 (even to APO/FPO), so I guess Amazon doesn't wanna deal with the hassle of categorization so they just gave up.

Here's a thing: http://askville.amazon.com/Amazon-scamming-Alaskan-free-shipping-atty-general-Alaska-stop/AnswerViewer.do?requestId=2348448

[–]sally_hustle 2 points3 points ago

I wasted a couple minutes and messed around calculating pricing options for outlandish objects. it was prett neat.

[–]HadManySons 2 points3 points ago

Why should they care? It's not like you're asking them to fill out customs forms? If they're willing to pay for the shipping to their mountain shack then why hate on our frigid and island dwelling citizens. Oh well.

[–]RedditusMaximuss[S] -1 points0 points ago

Its generally when they offer something like free shipping on everything site wide or exclusively use some shipping company that does not exist here.

[–]HadManySons 0 points1 point ago

Oh. Lame

[–]UnholyDemigod 0 points1 point ago

I thought it was just stereotypical Americans being so geographically challenged they though their own state was a different country

[–]SeaShell217 0 points1 point ago

at first i thought it was a website to check if you were registered to vote. thats why it was funny to me.

[–]mcg037 12 points13 points ago

And Connecticut and Delaware.

[–]felatiodeltoro 6 points7 points ago

Or Hawaii.

[–]ab3normal 15 points16 points ago

How the hell did I miss that?

[–]jonnyjonjonjon 6 points7 points ago

"Alabama Arkansas... I do love my mom and pa"

[–]iputbananasinmybutt 11 points12 points ago

Those obnoxious bastards forgot Hawaii as well.

[–]perfectd3 4 points5 points ago

You go to check out, "Does this ship to my ZIP Code? 99801 - (Juneau, AK) 'That ZIP Code is invalid, or doesn't exist. Please put in a valid ZIP code' MFW "

You go to check out "Ships free to all addresses in United States! 'Fine print at bottom says excludes Hawaii, Florida Keys, Puerto Rico, minor outlying islands, and ALASKA (at the very fucking end)'" ends up paying $80 shipping for a $5 part

You go to buy something You're actually are able to buy it. comes from a different country goes from California to Kansas To ANCHORAGE ALASKA, (for processing) Then BACK DOWN TO CALIFORNIA At this point, the status still says "another week before it reaches destination"

God dammit, I love living here, but I can't stand shopping online...

[–]907shortnsweet 0 points1 point ago

EXACTLY. I live on the Kenai Peninsula and we don't have many stores here so we online shop a lot.

[–]castle_danger 2 points3 points ago

Maybe said store/event/place etc. doesn't exist in Alaska, Connecticut or Delaware?

[–]Derobosmi 0 points1 point ago

They probably don't have whatever this website searches for. I'm assuming it is one of the things that you put your info in and it gives you a google map of something around you.

[–]PhysicallyInsane 3 points4 points ago

Aaaand cue the Fifty Nifty United States song that will be in my head all night.

[–]the_omega99 2 points3 points ago

They probably think Alaska is part of Canada.

Somehow, nobody ever remembers Alaska ("the biggest state is...?").

[–]Tillhony 3 points4 points ago

[–]the_omega99 4 points5 points ago

Except only an Alaskan would wear that, and I think an Alaskan would melt if they go to Texas.

[–]alaskanloops 2 points3 points ago

My coworker went to Texas once. Once.

[–]the_omega99 3 points4 points ago

Uh, did they return?

Could be worse, though, I keep hearing all these bad things about people melting in this place called "Wonderland".

[–]alaskanloops 3 points4 points ago

Well, yes, he did return. But he went down there with one of the most glorious beards I've ever seen (he had won awards for it in fact), and he returned sans said beard. So, in a way, it would have been better if he just never returned.

[–]907shortnsweet 0 points1 point ago

I'm an Alaskan who went to Texas! The people were so nice until I mentioned my state being bigger. Then they were rude. They say everything is bigger in Texas..... The people, maybe..... But not everything.

[–]sapienshane 1 point2 points ago

Noticed that too. OP has got a lot of nerve.

[–]We_found_peaches -1 points0 points ago

Roll Tide

[–]Hudnall 1 point2 points ago

and Hawaii :|

[–]tinychestnut 0 points1 point ago

They either leave Alaska off the shipping list or they charge a ridiculous amount to ship up here

[–]Phoequinox 0 points1 point ago

Hello, fellow Mobilian.

[–]BadgerGoneWild 0 points1 point ago

Oh man. Can we use "Correction - " instead of [FIXED] now?

[–]Sugar_and_Cyanide 0 points1 point ago

As an Alabama redditer I see no problem here.

[–]semibro 0 points1 point ago

Just scroll down to Russia - you can see it from there.

[–]LouieLungfish 0 points1 point ago

Alabama is number one! (In alphabetical order anyway)

[–]bballrnm 0 points1 point ago

Notice also that Connecticut, Delaware, and Hawaii are all missing too.

[–]husherfox 0 points1 point ago

Worst part is the commercials and sales we don't get but they run the ads anyways. oh, and its a kick in the dick when "spring" rolls around and they are showing green yards and lawn mowing crap while i'm still shoveling snow or going out for another bag of ice melt

[–]IR12 0 points1 point ago

Here, here!!!

[–]Scronkr19 0 points1 point ago

Everytime I tell a person over the phone, at work, where I live in Alaska in abbreviaton, AK, they always ask me how Arkansas is.

[–]thebrandon 0 points1 point ago

I live in Alabama. Sometimes, when I sign up for a website and choose Alabama (as its usually at the top of the list) I imagine they're gonna think I'm lying.

[–]gracefulasfuck 0 points1 point ago

I'm from alaska and this has never happened to me...what are you ordering, man? 'cause they're on something stupid.

[–]redwud 0 points1 point ago

I love Alaska, was there once. Coolest mericuns I've ever met.

[–]nofucksgiven5 0 points1 point ago

Hawaii is missing too.

[–]Smokeyanna8 0 points1 point ago

And no one saw that they left out Connecticut and Hawaii?

[–]creepyeyes 0 points1 point ago

I take it we're supposed to be Looking For Alaska?

[–]ladinu 0 points1 point ago

Little tip: Click on the drop down selector and just type the name.

[–]HairyPurpleApe 0 points1 point ago

Softly sings 50 nifty....

There is SO much wrong!

[–]8Deez08 0 points1 point ago

Goddammit! Where dafuq is Hawai'i??

*In the Pacific Ocean. Ba dum tssss!!

[–]Abnmlguru 0 points1 point ago

I ordered a skull plushie from PVPonline years ago, and got into an Email fight with Scott Kurtz about whether Alaska counted as international shipping. If it hadn't been a gift for a good friend, I would have told him where he could put that plushie, around the 3rd email.

[–]kdawg09 -1 points0 points ago

And here I was thinking it was becasue Alaska is cold as fuck!

[–]corylew 1 point2 points ago

It's actually not that bad.

[–]Broman_the_barbarian 0 points1 point ago

Just wait. It'll be here soon.

[–]electromonkey222 0 points1 point ago

Just pic Washington. That's where I'm from, and we welcome you.

[–]Patrick_Glenn 0 points1 point ago

That's pretty much the only good thing that's keeping me from moving out of Alabama. One less thing to click when I'm filling out forms online. And college football.

[–]mountainousman -1 points0 points ago

Alaska is just part of Canada... right?

[–]907shortnsweet 3 points4 points ago

No. >:[

[–]mountainousman 0 points1 point ago

WELL WHY NOT

[–]ApolloMagic 0 points1 point ago

Strange... I thought the worst part about living in Alaska was Sarah Palin.

[–]norikotheninja 0 points1 point ago

It is. She's been gone (or hiding) for a while and we are still dealing with her shit.

[–]al-ex-and-ra -1 points0 points ago

I live in Alaska and have never run into a problem like this.

[–]corylew 2 points3 points ago

Same here. Just bears, lack of sports, and high shipping costs.

[–]RedditusMaximuss[S] 1 point2 points ago

Come on man we have The Alaska Wild.... Yeah... Nevermind.

[–]Broman_the_barbarian 0 points1 point ago

So I got bored one day and started to count all of the Alaska shows. Turns out we have about 20 of them and counting.

[–]I_FISTED_MY_GRANDMA 0 points1 point ago

We have loose gun and marijuana laws. I'm happy.

[–]olwatshisface -5 points-4 points ago

Well you can see Russia from Sarah Palin's house, so we're just getting prepared for when Russia walks across and reclaims it
