What are they protesting?

[–]AngloAlbionYamYamVille 33 points34 points ago

Their virginity most likely.

Made the front page of Russia Today.

[–]Naggers123Lahn-Dahn Bruv 2 points3 points ago

Hilarious, but it kind of makes you wonder if our media pulls the same shit with coverage of Russia.

[–]dramalamauk 13 points14 points ago

It does, but it is not just our media. Consider the different in treatment between the occupiers of Fortnum & Mason and Pussy Riot, for example.

We consider Russia an illegitimate state: any act of rebellion is to be supported, no matter how dubious. We see our own state as legitimate: even the most minor acts of rebellion are looked down on.

A more extreme example would be the Mujhadeen (aka the Taliban circa 1980). They won very positive media coverage and full backing in the West, despite rebelling in the name of values that are the antithesis of liberal democracy.

Tangentially relevant quote: "There’s a bit in Boris Johnson’s biography where it says the Bullingdon guys used to go out and smash up pubs and restaurants, and if anyone complained they’d just chuck two hundred pounds into their faces. Doesn’t matter, does it? It’s just student hijinks. The kind of student vandalism I can’t stand is when it has a political or moral agenda." - Stewart Lee

Well it's definitely more balanced and independent than it was during the Russian invasion.

And whilst there is obviously a inevitable pro-Western angle, given their staffing and areas of recruitment, it's more driven by consumer trends than anything else. That's partly why we get all this crap about the 'Human rights question' of Pussy Riot and about 2 hours a week on the massive currency riots in Iran.

[–]dramalamauk 3 points4 points ago

Wouldn't choose the term "consumer trend", but that's sort of what I was getting at. It is not simply the media with a bent lens on the world, but everyone.

Who has the most influence, and how, on collective conciousness is another question entirely.

no problem, mace goes through the mask fine.

[–]ianvandahl 16 points17 points ago

I find it bizarre that a religious terrorist has had his reputation rehabilitated to the point where he is now an international symbol of anti-governmental rebellion. How much different is it to people, in a couple of hundred years time, wearing a Bin Laden mask?

[–]teafaceismingMercian born, 'Ullian 21 points22 points ago

To be honest though, the desired representation of persona/character of the mask are in most peoples eyes of V rather than Guy Fawkes.

[–]AtomicDog1471 5 points6 points ago

Especially considering how bonfire night is about celebrating how the King didn't die.

[–]KyorakiSussex 3 points4 points ago

I thought it was to do with villainising the Catholic Church. Before Guy Fawkes became an icon, it used to be the Pope people were burning on top of bonfires.

[–]thegreatnick 13 points14 points ago

Just wait until someone writes a great comic book and then some people make an alright film about Bin Laden.

[–]dan2802Wolverhampton 15 points16 points ago

Is can see it now;

B for BIN LADEN

Rolls of the tongue wonderfully.

[–]AtomicDog1471 4 points5 points ago

and so it is my very good honor to meet you and you may call me Bin.

[–]dan2802Wolverhampton 5 points6 points ago

I think we just broke Alan Moore.

[–]revolution_nein 1 point2 points ago

What do you think Bin Laden is?

[–]tangled_footThe Toon 6 points7 points ago

These guys are idiots right?

We're all agreed on that....right?

[–]green_clockEngland 3 points4 points ago

I'm so sick of idiots tagging those v for vendetta masks on every flat surface they can find. What point are they trying to make? That they are anti-social fuckwits?

[–]wills354Southampton 3 points4 points ago

there doesn't seem to be any real reason for this... http://www.ukanonymousevents.com/index.html

[–]ianvandahl 3 points4 points ago

Cracking tune mind. Sounds like Spunk Bubble from Peep show.

[–]GreenDragonFly 0 points1 point ago

Stop the education, health and wealthfare cuts

Isn't V for Vendetta an anti-government/Libertarian/Anarchist thing?

[–]irishgeologistScotland 2 points3 points ago

It seemed more anti-authoritarian/repressive government to me.

[–]jamesmcm 0 points1 point ago

Holy shit. Read the book, it's much better than the film, for exactly this reason. It was written against Thatcher :/

[–]tangled_footThe Toon -1 points0 points ago

wow, that website is fucking retarded. I agree with 2/5 of their demands but they're complete idiots when it comes to getting themselves heard, even if I agreed with 5/5 of their demands I still wouldn't want to associate myself with these nutters.

edit this sums it all up

[–]revolution_nein 2 points3 points ago

Who would you like to associate with, then?

[–]sindherNewcastle - British Empire 1 point2 points ago

What is this actually all about?

[–]teafaceismingMercian born, 'Ullian 1 point2 points ago

General discontent, with a bonfire night twist.

[–]dayus9Glawster and Lincolnshire 0 points1 point ago

The world needs more dickheads in stupid masks.

[–]HAMPLANET -1 points0 points ago

Looking up this OpVendetta, and it's a shame that these cunts have to get that fucking moronic V mask involved.

Fucking, impressionable channers and noisy adolescents championing a cause that sounds entirely worthwhile but actively combating any degree of credibility they might have by acting like such silly little bandwagoning twats about it.

[–]will_holmesNormal for Norfolk 1 point2 points ago

Wow, what twats. Anonymous' is at its least persuasive when it tries to be left-wing instead of just being liberal.

I'm all for protecting internet freedoms, but if they're going to start protests against the "cuts", frankly that's overstepping their ideological jurisdiction. It wouldn't surprise me if there were some groups behind this who are just using Anonymous as a front.

[–]irishgeologistScotland 1 point2 points ago

That's suggesting a level of organisation and an actual purpose which is unlikely to be present here. Most likely a mob-type mentality of "that was a powerful scene in the movie, let's do that".

[–]dramalamauk -3 points-2 points ago

People who talk about revolution and class struggle without referring explicitly to everyday life, without understanding what is subversive about love and what is positive in the refusal of constraints, such people have corpses in their mouths
