But... you still don't have to scroll down to find your state when they're listed in alphabetical order, so I guess it's better than Mississippi.

[–]Errbodyhappy 3 points4 points ago

As a fellow Alabama resident I have to say, we do have some beautiful landscapes. The people here may be... A bit special minded sometimes.. But it's one hell of a place to smoke up and admire the beauty.

[–]Devlus 2 points3 points ago

The land is very pretty, especially out towards Brewton.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

So true, I was high in the hills near Birmingham, it really is a beautiful place

[–]dabezian 16 points17 points ago

Asian in Alabama.

Yeah, there are some shitty people but most are fine in the right places. Right places being Birmingham and college campuses.

[–]rawdikrik[S] 6 points7 points ago

As long as you are near a college campus, it's usually intelligent and liberal people. Leave that little area... and it's the exact opposite.

[–]xbrand2 2 points3 points ago

The downvotes must be from people who have never lived in Alabama. I know I have, and I also know I won't ever again.

[–]justjacob 3 points4 points ago

Gay from small-town Alabama, so I got the fuck out as soon as I could.

[–]Dear_Occupant 0 points1 point ago

I spent two whole weeks in Alabama one night.

[–]helium_farts 7 points8 points ago

The hell? Is it make fun of Alabama day or something?

Sure, there are some racist hicks here, but there are racist hicks in every state.

For those interested, here are the demographics for AL.

White Latino Black Asian Other
67% 3.4% 26.2% 1.1% 2.3%

[–]sticky_stuntman 8 points9 points ago

Not intending to take away from your main point, but 67% white is still pretty damn high for a southern state.

[–]Zombie_Lover 0 points1 point ago

You hatin' on Whitey?!?!

Honestly, education is the difference. Better education = better acceptance of others.

Give equal funding to ALL school districts in all states and you will see far less racism. Sadly, most states are still ran by crusty old white dudes. I hope the future is better.

Not to mention, southern states have the best food, and it is generally inspired by black oppression. BBQ is an American original, but it was inspired by the plight of black folk.

[–]iwasapolygon 4 points5 points ago

Not every state has segregated proms...

[–]reiter761 2 points3 points ago

Some states acutally have segregated proms? ಠ_ಠ

[–]Devlus -5 points-4 points ago

Having lived in Alabama for 8 years, everyone there I KNEW is racist. Some may hide it behind bullshit 'southern hospitality', but everyone is racist. Get friendly with anybody and they start telling you racist joke after racist joke. Or better yet, let on that they go to KKK meetings. It is a rare Alabama-living person who is not genuinely racist.

[–]Bed_Deadroom 4 points5 points ago

It's not just white people that are racist in AL.

Source: Lived in or around Montgomery 34 years.

[–]Devlus 0 points1 point ago

I'll readily believe that.

[–]helium_farts 1 point2 points ago

Wow, that's incredibly ignorant.

[–]Devlus 2 points3 points ago

Have you actually lived in AL or are you just assuming?

[–]helium_farts 2 points3 points ago

I grew up in Alabama. I've never met someone under about 65 who was actually racist.

[–]Devlus -1 points0 points ago

What part did you grow up in? I just moved away from Escambia County and everyone I knew was racist to an extent. I may have over-exaggerated by saying everyone in AL is racist, but it was such a part of the entire culture I saw.

[–]Iheartchickennuggets 7 points8 points ago

I'll admit I've never been to Alabama, but I always get pretty skeptical of these kind of posts that bash the south. I've lived in Arkansas my whole life and for the most part everyone is treated pretty well. Granted it's not the deep south like Alabama, but we do have a tough history.

[–]copper_rainbows 3 points4 points ago

Since when is Arkansas not the Deep South? What map are you looking at?

[–]CajunTurkey 3 points4 points ago

Louisiana here. Arkansas is not "Deep South" to us.

[–]Iheartchickennuggets 1 point2 points ago

Arkansas has always been viewed as more progressive than states like Mississippi Louisiana or Alabama. That's why there was a lot of in migration of former slaves from those states after the civil war. Not to mention Little Rock Central was chosen as the first major integration because it was thought that it would be safer than in other states. Sure enough, the integration was successful, but not without a few hiccups of course.

[–]gav1n_h -2 points-1 points ago

But those are the least progressive compared to the rest of the states?

[–]helium_farts 0 points1 point ago

Arkansas is north south.

[–]PrairieHarpy 2 points3 points ago

Are you white?

Fun fact about my hometown: Tulsa, Oklahoma. Tulsa Race Riot.

The Tulsa Race Riot was a large-scale racially motivated conflict on May 31 and June 1, 1921, in which whites attacked the black community of Tulsa, Oklahoma. It resulted in the Greenwood District, also known as 'the Black Wall Street' and the wealthiest African-American community in the United States, being burned to the ground. During the 16 hours of the assault, over 800 people were admitted to local hospitals with injuries, and more than 6,000 Greenwood residents were arrested and detained at three local facilities. An estimated 10,000 blacks were left homeless, and 35 city blocks composed of 1,256 residences were destroyed by fire. The official count of the dead by the Oklahoma Department of Vital Statistics was 39, but other estimates of black fatalities have been up to about 300.

Another fun fact, I lived in a small farming community outside of Tulsa and my sophomore-junior year in high school we had a "race riot" occur between black students and white supremacist rednecks. The rednecks went to several black kids houses with nooses, shotguns, and molotovs, threatening the kids to fight. There were a few fist fights outside of school, broken windows, and one pick axe to a car trunk, but that was the height of the fighting. But we had extra state troopers at the school and two ATF agents. It was a dramatic time at school.

TL;DR: Oklahoma is probably the most racist state in the union.

[–]Space_Ninja 10 points11 points ago

My brother lives in Tulsa, and I'm heading there for Xmas. From my previous visit, I have concluded that the best thing to do in Oklahoma is to get the fuck out of Oklahoma.

[–]tchoob 2 points3 points ago

On a summer post-highschool road trip to Austin from New Jersey with some friends, we cut through Alabama because we stopped in Georgia to visit a friend. You have Dreamland Barbecue in Montgomery, Alabama. We stumbled upon it by chance, and it is literally the best food I've ever had.

About two months later we had to celebrate a birthday party among one of the friends, so we surprised her with imported Dreamland Barbecue. She actually cried with joy.

[–]Onlywhenican 2 points3 points ago

The good thing about living in Alabama as a minority is some of the richest history of African Americans in the country. Take a tour of the airmen museum in Tuskegee and tell me you don't get goosebumps.

[–]raalph13 2 points3 points ago

so.... Leave?

[–]CHAINSAW_GUTSFUCK 2 points3 points ago

What? Minorities are the majority here in Birmingham, or so it seems. As ANYONE, your gif stands true.

[–]jaette_kalla_mik 6 points7 points ago

move. There are 49 other states and a ton of other countries.

seriously. If you don't like where you live, move.

[–]Skwerley 15 points16 points ago

When people say they are stuck, it doesn't mean they are just scared. I couldn't move to a city 200 miles away if I wanted to, much less another state.

[–]jaette_kalla_mik 0 points1 point ago

I don't buy this for an instant. There are a number of ways to move. If you want to move, move. If you hate "everything" about your state, move. You aren't making it better by sitting around feeling sorry for yourself.

[–]k34m0n -3 points-2 points ago

My parents weren't well off but we weren't poor either, though I wasn't given any funds when I made my decision. I broke the news to my family a week before my bus left. I had quit my first job and took what little money I had and bought a bus ticket and moved from Augusta, GA to Dallas, TX. I don't think it's so much that people can't, but more so yes, they are just scared. Leaving one's comfort zone can be hard but can be done. You're never stuck, emotionally maybe, but physically never.

[–]EvolvedEvil 10 points11 points ago

I can think of some times where one could be physically bound to a place.

[–]Skwerley -1 points0 points ago

Yeah. I've moved twice. Once to escape, and once to come back because it disnt work out. Try it now, tell me how it works out.

[–]jaette_kalla_mik 0 points1 point ago

this is the point. People like to think that their problems are geographic. But they aren't. If you have a bad attitude about alabama (you can't find one good thing about it) then you will probably have a bad attitude about whichever state you move too.

But some folks would rather complain than find out. These are the kinds that say "I can't move." If they were the kind of people that just moved and found what was out there, they would probably also be the kind of person who has a good attitude and wouldn't say that there is literally not one good thing about their state.

[–]k34m0n -4 points-3 points ago

It's worked great for me. I have no reason to move right now so it would honestly be pointless. Those without a real desire and drive to accomplish something most likely will fail. I also find it funny though that people say it's hard to find a job right now, my girlfriend's phone won't shut up from calls from places she's applied for. Though they may not be trade jobs and just basic labor, it's work.

[–]Skwerley 1 point2 points ago

Well congrats. But everyone isn't that lucky.

[–]k34m0n 0 points1 point ago

I wish luck had something to do with it. It was all hard work and dedication.

[–]Skwerley -3 points-2 points ago

Sorry, it's not the 60's anymore. As much as I wish you were right, you aren't. Everyone doesn't even have a chance to work hard and follow their dreams anymore, at least not in this country, anymore.

[–]k34m0n 5 points6 points ago

Ok. :/

Maybe it just really sucks ass in Alabama then because out here in Texas it doesn't seem to be that hard at all to find a job if one was to just get up off their lazy ass. Oh well. I'm wrong, you're right, it's impossible to find a job.

[–]Skwerley -1 points0 points ago

I live in Texas, in a small town with a strong economy. It IS hard to find work.

[–]jaette_kalla_mik 1 point2 points ago

with this attitude, you are right. Maybe everybody can't make it to be the ceo of a fortune 500 company. But anybody can scrape up 1000 dollars over the coarse of a year and move.

[–]bob-leblaw 6 points7 points ago

It's been done. Few things worthwhile are easy. Figure it out.

[–]jaette_kalla_mik -1 points0 points ago

Or continue to hate your life.

What is so hard about moving? You just do it.

[–][deleted] ago

[–]jaette_kalla_mik 0 points1 point ago

If you have no money, then you lose nothing by moving to a new place where you will have no money. Just start walking.

If you have some money and you won't have any if you move, you have found 1 thing to like about alabama.

[–]Papadragon89 2 points3 points ago

Until you take into account the blacks haven't been a minority (even in the south) for years..

[–]jacksonco16 -1 points0 points ago

Well there is the karma you get from this post!

[–]dorkrock2 0 points1 point ago

I can't tell if someone dropped some powdered doughnuts on that guy's head or if that's just how bumpy his head is.

[–]Konebred 1 point2 points ago

Well, you can get as much fresh shrimp as your EBT card will hold, but that isn't limited to just black folk I s'pose.

[–]dudSpudson 1 point2 points ago

Grits?

[–]General_Hide 1 point2 points ago

Can anybody get a still frame of the moment her jaw drops down about 10" from her face (if you watch closely, you'll see what I'm talking about)

[–]Errbodyhappy 1 point2 points ago

Ttown here.

[–]bob-leblaw -2 points-1 points ago

I would move then.

[–]sleepyblonde -2 points-1 points ago

Amen to that brother.

[–]dwimber -5 points-4 points ago

As a white guy that grew up in Alabama, I can confirm this. Hang in there, and know that not everyone is a narrow-minded bigot! hugs!

[–]mnells -1 points0 points ago

Unless you live in Birmingham.

And then it's all.

[–]still_had_sex -4 points-3 points ago

I'm a minority from California. I'm currently applying to grad schools out of state and this thread is starting to scare me.

[–]Snolidsteak -3 points-2 points ago

Passed through alabama whilst on tour with my band. Keep in mind with 4 other sweaty, smelly dudes. I opened the window to get fresher air and was literally blasted with shit smell. I mean Jersey smells pretty bad but i think alabama takes the cake

[–]nlitend1 2 points3 points ago

you sir are a fucking idiot ... you pass by one paper mill or skunk whilst you decide to air out your smelly sausage fest and you blame it on AL. Lol! Go back home weirdo ...

[–]BODILYFLUIDS 0 points1 point ago

[–]remton_asq -3 points-2 points ago

No one is forcing you to stay in Alabama...you can always move to Africa and live in a society that your own people have made.

Oh wait you are never going to do that because you are just another whiny little negro mooching off of White civilization while whining and bitching about how tough you have it.
