Jesus Christ the level of split second precision and refined reflexes necessary to know your opponent's reach, read it, move, anticipate follow throughs, and then deliver the right blow is staggering.

[–]kingwi11 16 points17 points ago

god, brain damage at such a prime stature.

[–]knugen 28 points29 points ago

To reiterate what has been said about that gif before: It's the same sequence shown twice from different camera angles.

Still impressive though, of course!

Edit: Are you guys stupid or what? I made this post before the edit above, referencing this ONE gif. After seeing the actual fight in the link below it's easy enough to tell that previously mentioned gif is an edit with the same sequence playing twice.

[–]MadDogMike 4 points5 points ago

Jeez, people! It's painfully obvious that knugen is only talking about one GIF, the one he replied directly to. He's saying that both sequences in the GIF are actually just the same shot from different angles, not one long continuous dodging sequence.

[–]Triviaandwordplay 21 points22 points ago

I've watched lots of videos of Tyson, Ali, and Silva. All have taken a lot of significant shots in their prime, they just took them well, but we've all seen how many fighters end up paying later for their toughness.

[–]RobOneXL 31 points32 points ago

I don't think Silva has taken punishment like Ali and Tyson. For one you can't take getting punched in the head for 12 rounds to a 3-5 round mma fight that involves grappling, kicks, and punches. Out of the 3 I would say Ali easily took the most punishment. His ability to take a punch was as good as his ability to dodge one. I think he used his chin a bit to much. Also the end of his career was a bit rough. Sure he won most of his fights but he went from finishing opponents to 15 round decisions. That is a lot more trauma to the head. Tyson took punishment in the end of his career after taking practically none through his run as champ in the beginning. Silva doesn't take to much damage. He gets hit but he is really a master at rolling with the punches so they just graze him or they never land solid. But he reminds me of Roy Jones Jr in his prime. When he was going whole rounds with out being touched.

[–]phedre 6 points7 points ago

I doubt Silva's going to be fighting much longer, which is probably for the best.

[–]d_spaceley1 0 points1 point ago

True, but I couldn't find it.

[–]phedre 11 points12 points ago

Silva is the fucking master at dodging punches. It's like his opponents are all moving in slow motion.

[–]Jel251 1 point2 points ago

he broke forest griffins jaw here lol. so smooth with it.

[–]Jimi187 2 points3 points ago

Ohh, Ooooh geee would you look at that?! They're divising some kind of plan to reap karma...wooooow.

[–]noahprine 2 points3 points ago

I always loved this because he just teasing the man!

[–]Amisten 26 points27 points ago

[–]umilmi81 36 points37 points ago

Mike Tyson was awesome. I'm sad he lost all his money and became a crazy person. I hope he stays on his medication and becomes a millionaire again. He deserves it.

[–]staffell 62 points63 points ago

He became a crazy person, because like all fighters eventually, his brain has been smashed to pieces over a long period of time. Ain't no recovering from that shit.

[–]PrimeIntellect 15 points16 points ago

He was definitely crazy before that happened as well. To be honest, I think the brain smashing pushed him further towards being a somewhat normal person

[–]isofat 3 points4 points ago

Boxing is often considered the toughest sport on the planet. The people who succeed are rarely ever normal.

[–]inkieminstrel 44 points45 points ago

Seriously. Lower level professional bouts make you realize how sick the sport is. It's two guys trying to punch each other until one's brain ceases to function well enough to keep him standing. At those levels, there's a good period of time where one guy can no longer really compete, but can still stand and move. The audience essentially watches a guy with a concussion continue receiving head trauma at that point.

I saw that once and had no stomach for the sport since.

[–]MRhama 15 points16 points ago

That is why I prefer mma. There is less focus on the head and more varied fighting such as body hits and wrestling. I also feel sick when it is too abusive and too little stamina/tactics competition. This was the case in one of the fights in a recent UFC where one guy just took hit after hit to his head. I just skipped through that fight when I noticed it.

[–]Joest23 9 points10 points ago

The worst fights to watch are the ones where one of the fighters is mounted and is just getting annihilated by lefts and rights, and he's covering up but it's not doing anything to block the blows.

Those are difficult to watch.

[–]HasFuckedYourMom 16 points17 points ago

At least he has his pigeons.

[–]Hoxton 20 points21 points ago

And I actually think that his pigeons has meant more to him in his life than ever being a millionaire.

[–]Kashyyykk 8 points9 points ago

That's sadly what getting hit in the face for years will do to you.

[–]MrTizl 24 points25 points ago

What is the hugging for? I know absolutely zero about this stuff and it is something I've always wondered about.

[–]strychnine 52 points53 points ago

Hard to punch someone when they're almost inside of you.

[–]AsDevilsRun 92 points93 points ago

That sounds pretty rape-y.

[–]rdeari1 6 points7 points ago

wow, you went all out with that link.

[–]LostInSmoke 2 points3 points ago

Except with an uppercut, then they're right where you want them, hence the gif.

[–]Escendo 91 points92 points ago

The strongest part of a punch will be at the apex of the swing. Therefore, in order to avoid getting punched, boxers often huddle close to their opponent knowing that punches at that distance are typically ineffective.

[–]thalguy 99 points100 points ago

It also gives them a moment to have the ref separate them, so that they can back away, and escape the dangerous distance, without being in danger.

[–]CantHearYou 85 points86 points ago

But most importantly... Male bonding.

[–]thalguy 14 points15 points ago

Where would we be without the bonding?

[–]DrChoco 78 points79 points ago

Just atoms.

[–]DePiddy 11 points12 points ago

[–]DynamicRabbit 94 points95 points ago

Male bonding.

[–]JefeRocha 15 points16 points ago

To get close to the ears so that you can eat them

[–]SwagMongoose 5 points6 points ago

It's called Clinching, when you clinch, you can't be punched.

[–]JakJakAttacks 14 points15 points ago

Like a ninja.

[–]l3ane 4 points5 points ago

Hell yes! Mike perfected the "peek-a-boo" style of in-boxing. He would bounce around like that, then throw a liver punch or an uppercut.

[–]KennyLoggnsDngrZone 9 points10 points ago

Easy. left, left, up, b, dodge, uppercut

[–]tacos_pipe 2 points3 points ago

What about Julio Cesar Chavez

[–]thekittenskaboodle 42 points43 points ago

I'll say with full confidence that if Tyson wasn't such a shitty person, he would easily be considered the best boxer of all time. It's just hard to say someone's the best ever when they bit part of someone's ear off and threatened to eat someone's children.

[–]louie82 40 points41 points ago

You forgot convicted rapist.

[–]AnonymousSkull 18 points19 points ago

I can't excuse the ear bite but have you watched the fight? Holyfield was headbutting constantly and, even worse, getting away with it. Tyson eventually couldn't stand it anymore and made a bad call, but the fight was pretty fucked up as it was.

[–]SALMONSLAY3R 133 points134 points ago

Hardest punches ever thrown. Just ask anybody that fought him.

[–]Jesus_In_Drag 320 points321 points ago

I would, but I'm pretty sure they all forgot words.

[–]Snackhat 190 points191 points ago

"So describe his punches..."

"HE HURT BIG OW"

[–]eat_fish 37 points38 points ago

How do I words?

[–]harky 96 points97 points ago

Ask anyone who fought both Foreman and Tyson and see if they disagree. Mike Tyson was all about precision and speed. Foreman just hit you in the ribs with a brick until you couldn't stand anymore.

[–]beefwich 44 points45 points ago

I heard the same thing. Tyson was a jackhammer, Foreman was a wrecking ball.

[–]ServedwithoutShoes 30 points31 points ago

For some reason this thread is making me hungry.

[–]geekd 7 points8 points ago

Throw some chicken on the grill!

[–]kindofbutnotreally 145 points146 points ago

Yeah, he'd grill you.

[–]SoopahFreek90 16 points17 points ago

I've heard Foreman is a guy you can really sit down and just chew the fat with.

[–]HONEST_ABE_APPROVES 13 points14 points ago

He was also pretty nice, it was rare for him to have beef with another fighter.

[–]TheTalentedAmateur 5 points6 points ago

On the rare occasions that he did have a beef, he would just get hot and press them until they chickened out, though.

[–]IamBenJammin 1 point2 points ago

Ask Lennox Lewis. He'll say different. He knocked the shit out of Mike Tyson. I guarantee that LL could throw one harder.

[–]couchcorpse 106 points107 points ago

F = ma

[–]umilmi81 62 points63 points ago

Tyson had plenty of both m and a.

[–]LostInSmoke 13 points14 points ago

If you watch closely you can even see where that force comes from. A proper uppercut is driven by nearly every muscle in the body, not just the arm. It comes from the legs, the glutes, the abs, the back, all of it working in harmony to... destroy another guy's brain.

I wish there was a way to have "safe" boxing.

[–]DrEbez 5 points6 points ago

hips too. very important for that sort of thing. Home run sluggers, even quarterbacks...it's all in the hip swivel

[–]Jesus_In_Drag 65 points66 points ago

[–]Sandoness 4 points5 points ago

jesus christ whats the deal with this?

[–]filladellfea 41 points42 points ago

I wonder what would do more damage: taking a fastball to the face from Nolan Ryan (circa 1979) or getting punched by Tyson in his prime?

[–]strychnine 60 points61 points ago

I'm going to go with a pitch from Nolan Ryan. Tyson punches like a goddamn beast, but I bet you'd live - a Ryan pitch would be like a big, fat bullet.

[–]surells 71 points72 points ago

Tyson punches like a goddamn beast, but I bet you'd live

No. No you would not.

[–]strychnine 37 points38 points ago

Okay, let me rephrase: you have a better chance of living than you do if you took a Nolan Ryan fastball to the face. A Tyson punch has a better chance of just landing you in a coma.

[–]surells 12 points13 points ago

Fair dues.

[–]HappyAssassin 10 points11 points ago

Wait, Tyson with a glove on or bare fisted?

[–]s4r9am 28 points29 points ago

It's more lethal with gloves because people don't hold back. Bare-fisted, you would hurt your knuckles hitting the bones in the face. You pack a stronger punch using gloves. Not sure if Tyson would give a fuck though.

Downvotes suggest that people don't believe me. My source: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=F2Tx48x1ZoM#t=1184s

[–]BenKen01 23 points24 points ago

Yup. Gloves are protecting hands, not faces.

[–]LostInSmoke 4 points5 points ago

I'd say its less about the face, which may be spared a bit by the gloves, and more about the brain. Gloves do nothing to prevent traumatic brain injury, because like others have said, they don't reduce the force any.

[–]raymonddd 4 points5 points ago

hate to break it to you, but thousands of people have lived through his punches...

[–]NinjaSupplyCompany 4 points5 points ago

In his career he went 50-6. I'm sure he has punched more people but thousands might be a stretch.

[–]SonofSonofSpock 16 points17 points ago

Is Tyson wearing boxing gloves?

[–]Williamfoster63 50 points51 points ago

The gloves protect his hand, not your face...

[–]phliuy 13 points14 points ago

they'll protect your face from getting cut, but will slightly increase the total damage done.

[–]DooDooSwift 13 points14 points ago

they actually add weight to his hand, so more blunt trauma results

[–]Chops369 25 points26 points ago

Sure, gloves will add some [negligible] amount of weight, but the force of the punch will be spread over the contact surface of the glove, which is larger than that of a bare fist.

[–]woopsifarted 8 points9 points ago

Doesn't really matter though, that doesn't take away from the damage being done to the brain. And he would be able to punch harder and longer without holding back. It's a pretty well known fact that gloves ensure boxing is much more brutal than it would be without

[–]filladellfea 6 points7 points ago

bare knuckle

[–]SonofSonofSpock 18 points19 points ago

Either way you have a pretty good shot at dying so I am going to say its a coin toss.

[–]blackjesus78 8 points9 points ago

bare knuckle would do less internal damage to the brain, it might fuck up his hand though.

[–]Stevie_Rave_On 9 points10 points ago

Why not a combination of both?

http://i.imgur.com/KsAAs.jpg

[–]phliuy 24 points25 points ago

there are many factors to consider.

You can't just take into account psi; psi deals with pressure, and not damage.

You would need to figure out the kinetic energy of the ball and the punch first.

the ball has much more velocity, but tyson's punch has far more mass.

Remember, a good punch is thrown with the entire body, not just the hand or the shoulder.

next, you need to figure out how much energy and momentum is transferred to the face. The ball will bounce off, meaning that some of its energy will still be contained within the ball.

On the other hand, tyson will punch through his opponent's head, meaning he will continue to transfer energy well past the first point of contact.

You then need to determine what kind of damage will be done.

Likely, the ball will cause shattered bones and broken teeth. The damage of the punch will likely be from concussive brain damage. Broken bones are also likely to break, but most damage will come from the brain.

You also have to look at the structure of bones. Bones can bend and twist. This will make it easier to absorb the force of the punch, but they likely would not be able to bend fast enough to dissipate the energy of the ball.

I don't really have exact numbers to work with, but if someone used the outline i made here, they could likely find many numeric values of the damage done.

Personally, I would take the punch. assuming I am allowed to keep my chin tucked, jaw tight, and neck stiff, the most he would do is break my nose, cheek, or teeth with a likely knockout. This would suck, but I would come out okay eventually.

On the other hand, the ball from Ryan would likely shatter many of my teeth and maxilla. This, in my opinion, would be much worse.

I've been hit hard by punches, and I think I would be able to withstand a blow that's probably about twice as hard as the hardest one I've ever taken. I may not be conscious afterwards, but I'll be okay.

The fastball would just suck.

[–]doctorclockwork 7 points8 points ago

Can we get the Mythbusters on this?

[–]ZaneMasterX 14 points15 points ago

The average person would probably die from a shot like that from Tyson. These boxers have muscles on top of muscles in their necks, shoulders, and chest that help soften the blow. A normal persons head would snap back so hard your neck would easily break and kill you.

[–]Dragday 24 points25 points ago

Even in slow motion it is fast.

[–]RunningInSquares 21 points22 points ago

I can almost hear the crack.

[–]RunningWithBeer 5 points6 points ago

this is my favorite video game of all time. super punchout is up there too. I'm kinda confused as to why there was so many zeldas and metroids, but not more punch outs, because they were pretty good sellers. I mean just from a profit perspective. Glad to see the wii brought it back.

[–]skyshock21 3 points4 points ago

Punch Out Wii was pretty righteous if you haven't played it yet.

[–]TheRealCalypso 11 points12 points ago

Iron. Fucking. Mike.

[–]TheGrooby 11 points12 points ago

That gif brings back memories of 45 second Tyson bouts on HBO at $50 a pop. Would pay again.

[–]because_racecar 10 points11 points ago

The crazy thing is that this punch happened in the 2nd round, and the guy got up to fight all the way into the 10th. He took several more punches like this and kept getting up. He was never officially KO'd in this fight (might have been out on his feet a couple times) but the fight was finally stopped in the 10th.

I read somewhere that the reason Ribalta was able to last that long against Tyson was because he prepared for the fight by having his trainers beat him with bats.

Some more cool highlights from that fight

[–]Asiansensationz 29 points30 points ago

Here is my fist. now kith...

[–]ProfessorCaptain 27 points28 points ago

[–]umilmi81 21 points22 points ago

It was because of Tyson that people believed boxing matches normally end in a knock out.

[–]symmitchry 17 points18 points ago

... In the first round.

I remember my buddy's dad had us all over for a big PPV fight. First time I'd ever watched a fight. All excited with our drinks and snacks and shit.. Fight was like 2 seconds long.

[–]ProfessorCaptain 2 points3 points ago

Tyson is easily one of the fighters that made the sport what it is today. Bob Arum is doing his best to drive it into the ground though.

[–]RedPenVandal 3 points4 points ago

That was BRUTAL. 4:58, "That's the hardest I've ever been hit!"

Makes me wonder how anyone could have agreed to get in the ring with him while he was at his peak.

[–]skyshock21 11 points12 points ago

"Everybody has a plan until they get hit in the face" --Mike Tyson

[–]ManWhoStaresAtCats 8 points9 points ago

he ripped right through the dude's defenses. shit like this is gold.

[–]chazz251 14 points15 points ago

I'll fuck you til you love me...

[–]NeoShweaty 10 points11 points ago

When Tyson was good, it must have been downright fear for your life scary when you got in the ring with him. He just had some ridiculous power.

[–]apteryx_274 1 point2 points ago

That's why he didn't get beat until Holyfield decided to fight him, after many other contenders bailed out. Some say that Don King and the Mafia discouraged the top fighters from fighting mike, others say they were afraid. Either way, it took a 6'2" guy with 20 extra lbs on him to beat 5'7" Mike Tyson.

[–]jennah101 13 points14 points ago

On a slightly unrelated note, Evander Holyfield's nephew went to the middle school I went to. One day, the guy comes in for lunch. His nephew was sitting across from me and Evander Holyfield took the seat next to me. I couldn't help it and looked at his ear. It still looked weird... He noticed me and at first he looked really pissed off, but then he just sighed and asked, '' You know the story, right? '' I nodded my head, pale as ghost, and fearing that my ass was about to get thrown across the table. He just shrugged and said, '' Yeah, I'm almost used to it, don't worry. ''

That was one of the top 5 scariest moments of my life.

[–]mindzipper 11 points12 points ago

you know what bugs me about Mike? all the people that start spouting about how he never fought anyone, and he was a fake.. blah blah blah...

I can't believe ANYONE would try to not give Mike Tyson his due...
