I just get tired of how everything she says has the words "BC families" in it.

[–]22justinEnglish Bay 22 points23 points ago

families first. everyone else last.

[–]rainman_104North Delta 8 points9 points ago

Unless those families have children, then fuck teachers and schools. And if those families work as paramedics we'll just legislate an end to their strike.

By families, her party usually only refers to west-van families or shaughnessy families.

Upper middle class (white?) families.

[–]syntheticcodon 8 points9 points ago

I'm not sure west van is all that white any more.

[–]gaussian45 0 points1 point ago

The way I see it, there's actually two "Families First" programs in place. One, if you're upper-middle to upper class families? By all means, you come first. Two, if you're middle or lower class, the plan is actually Families First - Against the Wall.

As someone who lives in northern bc I can confirm that jobs do in fact grow on jobies.

[–]MyLittleSisterIsHot 4 points5 points ago

Which area?

[–]Mustard-Tiger 2 points3 points ago

In the Peace region.

[–]MyLittleSisterIsHot 0 points1 point ago

Dawson Creek?

[–]Mustard-Tiger 1 point2 points ago

I live closer to Fort St.John but Dawson creek has had a fair amount of development in the past few years as well. The whole area really.

[–]MyLittleSisterIsHot 0 points1 point ago

How are the winters? And whats the housing market like?

[–]Mustard-Tiger 1 point2 points ago

Very cold often below -40. Housing prices seem are still on the rise. But the wages most people are getting here makes up for it.

[–]MyLittleSisterIsHot 0 points1 point ago

Hmm I already live in a cold as hell lots of money place. I guess I will have to keep looking for somewhere else to live.

[–]Mustard-Tiger 1 point2 points ago

What is your career path? Do you have a trade or degree?

[–]MyLittleSisterIsHot 2 points3 points ago

Yes. Mechanic by trade. Experience across the whole board. Small engine, automotive, heavy duty, industrial, cranes, oilfield.

I've have worn many different hats.

[–]mc_thomp 1 point2 points ago

Heh, my father grew up in Dawson Creek. He left when he was around 19 and 43 years later he still hasn't gone back. His parents and his brother made the move not long after him too. Neither of them went back either. I guess I'm glad to hear there's a reason for people to actually go there now.

[–]cdnsonvaneast 13 points14 points ago

I don't think the Liberals should be taking heat over job creation. The economy in BC is actually very strong compared to other places in North America.

There are lots of jobs to be had, if you are flexible in your industry of choice.

[–]mc_thomp 4 points5 points ago

Seriously. I come back every summer from school and manage to land some sort of labor job without much of a problem. Just be flexible with what you're willing to do. Sure, you might have to work some shitty labor job one year, but you can use that opportunity to meet other contracting companies that might pay better.

I spent this last summer working irrigation for the fairly low wage 12$ an hour (crappy in terms of the work we had to do). It was some of the hardest type of labor I've ever done and the work is only seasonal (which doesn't affect me), but we worked with a couple other contractors. Spent the day with one crew and their workers were convincing me to come sign up with them the next summer as they get 16$ starting, get year-round work doing way easier shit with guaranteed raises, and are always looking for employees. Basically, just get yourself out there and start meeting people, the opportunities will come to you. Hell, I bet if you spent a day dropping by labor job sites and asking if any of them are hiring you'd be able to find several job opportunities without need for prior experience.

Oh, why don't I just strap on my student loan helmet, and squeeze into a trade school, and shoot off into a infrastructure project-land, where jobs are currently being filled by skilled immigrants?

FTFY.

[–]sheepleofreddit 7 points8 points ago

I'm pretty sure skilled immigrants will tell you they can't get those skilled jobs.

[–]rainman_104North Delta 8 points9 points ago

The GP is referring to the coal miners being outsourced to china for some reason, when we have resources here in BC that would take those jobs.

It's awesome to see trade unions putting up a fight on this front - the Canadian govt has been too business-friendly with temporary work visas displacing domestic workers.

[–]MyLittleSisterIsHot 0 points1 point ago

Which mine is hiring? TECK?

[–]tripleaardvark}3 1 point2 points ago

[–]german_zipperhead 6 points7 points ago

Just Go north...... Northern BC is in need of workers and companies will pay for you to move there.....

[–]pdb01 9 points10 points ago

Move? YOU EXPECT ME TO MOVE? What is this a concentration camp or something? I want to live in Kits and afford a $750K condo. Where the fuck is my job Ms. Premier?

[–]syntheticcodon 0 points1 point ago

I want to live in Kits and afford a $750K condo

So you're looking for a studio ~500 sq. ft deal then?

[–]Itisme129 5 points6 points ago

He said 750k, not 2mil!

[–]syntheticcodon 0 points1 point ago

Sadly, that's not so far removed from the truth that it's obviously farce.

When I tell people not from the Lower Mainland what the cost of buying any property is here they simply laugh and look at me as if I'm surely pulling their leg.

[–]gaussian45 1 point2 points ago

...if you're from China, and here "temporarily".

[–]german_zipperhead -2 points-1 points ago

The communities in Northern BC during occupy vancouver in response to the cries of unemployment offered to move people with the help of the provincial gov if people had the skills for a job that was needed.

Also there are tons of jobs, but people don't want to take them, so why not give that job to someone who wants to work then, you snooze you lose.

[–]gaussian45 4 points5 points ago

Northern BC, eh? Of course, there are TONS of jobs for people to take!

Oh.
Wait. Not necessarily.

[–]rageblock 0 points1 point ago

....where everyone have handjobs

[–]orbd 2 points3 points ago

To be fair it's easy to get a job if you're in the right field or are willing to move. Unless you were stupid and got an arts degree without anything else.

[–]FiddlerSC2 -1 points0 points ago

No kidding gif says it all, the tech industries are bailing out of Van recently

be it Rockstar Ubisoft and our cornerstone Radical Entertainment being shut down last couple months. Sad couple of months :(

Hopefully everything works out.

[–]dmseanholy crap sticks batman 13 points14 points ago

You mean, "entertainment industries". Software still be king here.

SAP, Vision Critical, Microsoft is opening a new development place (I'm guessing windows 8 rt stuff).

The gaming market has been on a decline for a few years. When you need to invest $30-50 million to make a video game, if it doesn't get you the return, you're screwed.

Software on the other hand, is still busy.

[–]whiskey06Sherrif of Nothing 1 point2 points ago

Absolute Software can be added to that list :)

[–]a1088245se 5 points6 points ago

The web industry is booming. It has never taken me more then 4 days to get a job.

[–]bobloblaw11 0 points1 point ago

Software development in general is booming. I know people who work in recruiting and they're having a hell of a time filling all the open positions. I work in an IT field and I get approached weekly with high paying opportunities.

[–]dragoneye 0 points1 point ago

That is just one software industry, every other job opening is for software developers in other industries.
