Pretty sure Odin never actually said anything like that. In fact, the norse gods were aware that the world would end at Ragnarok where they'd all battle the jotun ("ice giants") and a bunch of monsters would be let loose.

He 'wrote' the Prose Edda and Poetic Edda.
Wrote in those quotations because I have no idea what actually happened back then but his name is on them. It's most of the stories and poems of Norse Mythology.

A bit ago I got on a huge Norse tangent. I bought a whole buttload of books and read them (including 2 encyclopedias on mythology) I still cant get enough of it. I am still learning new tidbits here and there.

Any who, Snorri Sturluson seems to be the dude who we can thank for Norse mythology. Not that he made it, but that he recorded it. Those days were a time of songs and tales for history, no one wrote things down. Then Snorri Sturluson comes along and writes stuff down.

He wrote a lot down too, like, a whole lot, seems like the dude was interested in writing just about everything down. Prose Edda is most, if not all of his work, and iirc is where like 90% of what we know about ancient norse culture and happenings comes from. I tried to read a translated version, but (at least the version I got) it seems that it is a tough language to translate, so there is a bunch of reading between the lines. A lot of the stories within are about the rulers of the age too, so you might read about some a different interpretation of Baldr actually being a Norse god (apparently baldr meant noble, as in a noble person) and then you will read about some king who had 3 sons and what they did to try to please the gods, or how some raider was vanquished at village so and so.

Snorri popped up in a bunch of books I read, things like, "this is just one way people interpret the works of Snorri." So I dug deeper and found out a bunch. Though there is much more I do not know.

Reminds me of an archived thread from 4chan, were they wrote short stories of how the militaries of the world would act during Ragnarok. Like the American fleet battling Jörmungandr, Russian tank division fighting Jotun outside Moscow, stuff like that.

I should find that thread again, it was awesome.
