Yes it is real. This is just a variation of surface piercing similar to the corsets I'm sure you're all familiar with. The skin on the arms and hands is quite thin and flexible, making this process relatively painless and easy. With that said, don't try this unless you're an APP certified artist with qualifications in blood-born pathogens.

It's a performance piercing. These kinds of things are usually used in portfolios for artists trying to display their skill for future work, or done as a form of entertainment or, in some cases, for shits n' giggles. I get that you're joking, but it does irk me some when people rip on people in the bod-mod scene for being 'fucked up' :(

Body-mods like this are pretty in your face, so of course some people are going to rip on them. It's just a natural reaction to oppose something you don't understand and since a lot of people never get taught an alternative response to different and scary things and people, they have no chance but go with what they know.

These ones aren't permanent. The wearer most likely removed them after a half hour or what have you. I get people expressing disdain for it, totally get that, people do it with watersports or scat fetishists all the time, maybe rightly so because it's quite a weird thing to do if it doesn't appeal to you.

What I don't approve of is assuming that it's some reflection on the person who got those mods, as though the only reason they could have for having that sort of an appearance is because they want attention, or are just damaged goods.

I may have been unclear on the point i was trying to convey. I completely agree that making wild assumtions about people based on their apperance is stupid, but most people are going to do it any way.

The sheer volume of people content to never question their way of thinking makes trying to change this pretty much like trying to purify the ocean into drinkable water...

I wouldn't say so. The amount of progress that's been made towards tattooing becoming more socially acceptable has been staggering.

And those skewers could never heal. They're too obtrusive, and so they'd get knocked about too much. Same goes for corsets or any kind of surface piercings.

Chances are they did not stay in longer than a coupe of hours. Every surface piercing I've done has been completed, then photographed, and generally removed within 30 minutes of completion.

Some people keep them longer, but these are by no means permanent.

Unless the needles are not sterile, the only real risk of infection is when the needles are taken out. The pressure being placed on the needles by the skin helps keep a pretty tight seal.

Once the needles are out, a good scrubbing with some antibacterial soap and a small application of Aquaphor will keep things pretty. As long as you keep it clean, the holes will close in under a weeks time.
