I think in some cases people just aren't right for each other and only one person realizes it.

How I turned a friend into more:

Her boyfriend was being an ass, which was apparently typical. I always made her feel better about herself when he shattered her ego. Eventually I said there were other guys that would love to be in his shoes. She said there were no guys that would want to be with her and I made it a little obvious I was talking about me. She kept asking me about why I liked her and eventually I got tired of trying to explain it because I sucked at talking about my feelings. I told her I could just forget about her after a while and she confessed to having feelings for me. Eventually she just decided to stop being with someone that treated her like shit.

Timing:

I had known her for a couple months. I'd say that if you wait too long you might be hurting yourself, but in my opinion it's better to get to know someone before you try to be with them, so too soon can be bad too.

guys like you and OP are hilarious. Almost every girl I date have "floaters/orbiters" like you. They always give me the stink face when I meet them because it took me 1-2 hours from meeting their dream girl to getting her out on a date plus whatever, while in the mean time they've spent years "working on the situation"

Even if you're like the OP who finally escapes the friendzone (whatever that means, notice how he keeps dodging the question) after 4 years, that is still FOUR WHOLE YEARS you sunk into ONE girl. When you put that much time and effort into something, you become terrified of losing it.

Add to the fact that in those years you've been meeting guys like me, gritting your teeth behind your fake smile, while you think of subtle ways to talk shit about me behind my back to the girl. You realize how many of us are out there and how easy it is for us, and that scares you even more. Your thoughts go from 4 years of "how do i get this girl to like me?" to "how do i keep this girl from leaving me?"

And that is exactly how you lose her.
