That is an extremely clean and great dissection. Amazing. Reminds me of the Body Worlds exhibit. I definitely had to construct my own palmar arch to get full credit last year in gross anatomy lab because my cadaver, uh...wasn't born with one.

[–]PaintTown_ShutDown 19 points20 points ago

As uncomfortable as I was in the Body Works exhibit, I have to agree its an exhibit worth money.

[–]mattoattacko 6 points7 points ago

I wanted to go, but our physiology department and (I believe) entire medical school decided to "boycott" the exhibit due to the possible human rights violations regarding how the bodies were procured.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bodies:_The_Exhibition#Ethical_concerns

[–]uniqr 9 points10 points ago

I read that as "had to dissect my own" and freaked out a little. Glad that wasn't the case.

[–]thebigguru 576 points577 points ago

Man I want chicken now...

[–]PlasmaCow511 312 points313 points ago

The thumb area actually does look pretty tasty...

[–]moxxa 169 points170 points ago

some spices, potatoes and carrots, I'M MAKING ME A HAND STEW!!

[–]phlamez92 219 points220 points ago

Funny, that's my euphemism for jacking off.

[–]Take_Me_To_Elysium 36 points37 points ago

A guy I used to work with referred to it as "hanging out with Lady Palm and her five sisters."

[–]69allahtime 181 points182 points ago

[–]furmat60 8 points9 points ago

Handjelina Jolie

[–]gotissues68 20 points21 points ago

I'm fond of calling it stirring the mac and cheese, the sounds of both are roughly the same.

[–]Take_Me_To_Elysium 16 points17 points ago

Oh lawd.

[–]I_Was_LarryVlad 6 points7 points ago

Caaaaaaarl... why would you do that?

[–]BigG123 33 points34 points ago

Boil'em, Mash'em, Stick'em in a stew.

[–]iheartbakon 16 points17 points ago

Thumbstick?

[–]DarthYoda2594 16 points17 points ago

I'm really, and I mean really, glad I wasn't the only one. Or else i might have considered seeing a psychiatrist or something about the whole cannibalism issue

[–]fentonfenton 6 points7 points ago

That's the thenar eminence. It's actually a delicacy...at least, it is to cannibals! (I'm actually serious, you can google it).

[–]JuicyAb 10 points11 points ago

Add some broth, a potato; baby you’ve got a stew goin!

[–]jcoste 9 points10 points ago

Looks disturbingly like poultry..

[–]Volraith 13 points14 points ago

Glad I'm not the only one lol.

[–]Clvrgrl57 4 points5 points ago

I'm so glad I'm not the only sick one.

[–]evilcow320 25 points26 points ago

This is awesome I wanna see one of the whole body.

[–]ritterbum 58 points59 points ago

[–]_sms_ 70 points71 points ago

Are you sure that your friend will be cool with it?

[–]globetheater 15 points16 points ago

Slow clap

[–]Pukacz80 17 points18 points ago

this needs some punctuation

[–]TheDragonzord 6 points7 points ago

It's a thing. https://www.google.com/search?q=bodies+the+exhibition&hl=en&safe=off&prmd=imvns&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=OFaXUJfSGsng0gH_74DgAQ&sqi=2&ved=0CAcQ_AUoAQ&biw=1920&bih=979

I'm not aware of where the exhibit is currently or where it will be, bit I'm sure you could find out if you're interested in seeing it.

And yeah, they're real human bodies. And yeah, where some of them came from is unknown.

[–]dishie 7 points8 points ago

The fact that these aren't all slick and wet-looking, I guess, makes Bodies much less "gross" to me.

[–]ilovehpb 225 points226 points ago

Somehow, I don't understand how this NSFL. It's your body. I think it's weird how people find it weird to see what is just under our skin.

[–]vegetablesurprise 91 points92 points ago

It's a part of the body that is rarely seen and immediately associated with tremendous pain.

[–]KallistiEngel 8 points9 points ago

I can see where it would freak people out. I'm a bit desensitized to "medical" images, so I think it's cool. Actually took a look at my own hand and traced out where those bits are (the tendons + artery).

I appreciate that the title prepared me for what I was going to see though. If I had stumbled upon it unprepared, that would be another story.

[–]Rather_Dashing 5 points6 points ago

I often look down at my forearm and think it would be cool to cut it open and pull on the muscles to get my fingers to curl up. Ya know, except for the pain and everything.

[–]CUNTBERT_RAPINGTON 2 points3 points ago

Agreed.

"It's totally natural!" Totally natural for your brain to see the inside of your body or somebody else's and not instinctively freak the fuck out? Yeah, right.

[–]machinesofthezoneage[S] 168 points169 points ago

True! especially with such a clean dissection such as this one.

[–]FatWhiteAmerican 172 points173 points ago

I personally get fucking freaked out when I think about all the crazy shit going on inside of me. I love objectively thinking about it, but whenever I imagine all this stuff inside me I get a bit sick to my stomach, which is irrational I know. All I know is that a jam stuff in the mouth way, things come out the other end, and theres a person that can hopefully take care of maintenance issues until I expire.

[–]Sonomaroma 28 points29 points ago

Next time you stand in front of a mirror, put on or take off a watch from your wrist and watch the various lower arm muscle twitch as they control the precise movement of your fingers and wrist. Such a simple thing but the complex neurological and muscular events that occur in those 4 seconds is absolutely fascinating.

[–]eball86 32 points33 points ago

You're not alone.

[–]ragingnerd 24 points25 points ago

all i know is that the my mouth is the front end of a shit tube...

i also know that the ability to dissect a hand like this is fucking amazing and i stand in awe of the person/s who dissected the cadaver in such a manner...that's serious control...and skill

/boggle!

[–]Allastair 36 points37 points ago

Twist : no cadaver, his own hand.

[–]iceburgh29 22 points23 points ago

With craft scissors.

[–]easa123 8 points9 points ago

Twist: the hand in the picture is the hand he used to hold the knife.

[–]igrekov 3 points4 points ago

To be fair, it's less of an ability and more of a god complex. It's what makes master surgeons masters. They can separate themselves from the object that they're working on.

[–]FirstPlayer 10 points11 points ago

I'm a paramedic student and I swear every time we do cardiology stuff I can feel my heart freaking out. :/

[–]v3nturetheworld 3 points4 points ago

its crazy to think about it at a microscopic level, trillions of invisible cells, combined and working together like clockwork.

[–]ExxL 6 points7 points ago

I have the same thing, but to keep my thoughts nice and happy, I've got little baby construction piggies that pump my heart, a piggy that sits on my brain and controls what I do, and other little piggies to chomp chomp on the food that I ate, and they push it down my bootay hole :D

[–]MyRespectableAccount 8 points9 points ago

What kind of dissection is this? The artery in a normal cadaver would be flushed and white not red. Furthermore that muscle looks... fresh. This is at least somewhat WTF.

[–]Bioluminesce 2 points3 points ago

It's a cadaver right?

[–]Acid_Override 9 points10 points ago

[–]red91sit 4 points5 points ago

DAMN YOU!!!

[–]barsdealer 1 point2 points ago

It looks awesome. Reminds me of high school biology class.

[–]NotBaldwin 7 points8 points ago

I like my insides to stay inside and my outsides to stay outside. I do understand there are reasons for my desires to circumvented but on the whole I would rather not be involved in the admiring discussion of when they do.

[–]pepsiisthebest 4 points5 points ago

I felt queasy and weak after looking at that. Some people are just sensitive to exposed flesh.

[–]ringolio 1 point2 points ago

When I see pictures like this I think 'hey, someone had to slice up this guys hand to get to the inner parts,' and when I think of that happening to my hand it creeps me right the fuck out.

[–]ThatStereotype18 3 points4 points ago

Because it's not exactly "a natural part of our bodies" when you completely remove someone's skin and expose their veins/arteries. Imagining someone actually conscious when this happens is pretty terrifying. That's what freaks me out about it at least. I'm all for knowing what's going on our bodies, but I'm never gonna take pleasure in seeing someone's guts exposed.

[–]subtype 28 points29 points ago

Dunno if it's just me, but the muscle at the base of the thumb looks delicious; kinda like a chicken drumstick.

[–]teemarsh422 2 points3 points ago

That was my first thought when I saw this. Makes me question KFC....

[–]fingersandtoes 56 points57 points ago

I agree that this is definitely not NSFL! It's our bodies, and they are just amazing.

I don't think it's particularly accurate to label this as "ulnar artery" though, just saying. The ulnar artery is exactly where you'd expect it be-- mostly located in the forearm running along the ulna. This is the superficial palmar arch and the digital arteries, more so.

[–]akkan 43 points44 points ago

How about posting all our dick pics and say "it's our bodies, and they are just amazing." ?

There has to be a line somewhere.

[–]rampantdissonance 23 points24 points ago

Well, dicks shouldn't really be Nsfl, either. They are, however, not safe for work, as they're seen as sexual, so most workplaces would not appreciate it.

[–]pmk422 4 points5 points ago

Well it is amazing

[–]DK_The_White 1 point2 points ago

That line is culturally drawn. I, personally, would rather not see what you mentioned.

[–]Madock345 2 points3 points ago

On the other hand, I would.

[–]IHateHumans 2 points3 points ago

other hand

:D

[–]SentWest 3 points4 points ago

TIL why the chick on the program about being addicted to heroin I was watching the other day had track marks in her palm. She apparently blew out everything else, and I was wondering what the hell she was going for on that side of the hand.

[–]TripelNova 8 points9 points ago

Now just imagine sticking a fork in there and giving it a spaghetti twist.

[–]x0mbigrl 12 points13 points ago

No.

[–]BondGirl20 7 points8 points ago

As a Kinesiology student, I think that is the coolest thing ever.

[–]seaoats 37 points38 points ago

how is human anatomy NSFL?

[–]CancerOfTheWorld 47 points48 points ago

Where does it say NSFL?

[–]seaoats 2 points3 points ago

it doesn't, but someone said it should be tagged, but it's just a little bit of education.

[–]CancerOfTheWorld 18 points19 points ago

Then shouldn't it have been a reply. Without context it appears to be an attack on op.

[–]desenagrator 9 points10 points ago

It's not. I'm pretty sure it's crucial to life.

[–]machinesofthezoneage[S] 14 points15 points ago

Exactly. It's definitely tamer than most of the gore on /r/WTF.

[–]Skizzor 4 points5 points ago

We look like chicken

[–]CrazedCadavre 13 points14 points ago

All meat IS muscle, so...

[–]AntisocialBehavior 5 points6 points ago

You can see a branch of the radial artery too making the superficial palmar arch artery! There is so much good anatomy to be learned from this dissection (which is amazing work)

[–]fapping_bum 13 points14 points ago

I don't think this is wtf and it definitely doesn't need a NSFL tag.

[–]SushiGradeNarwhal 5 points6 points ago

Unless you change the L to mean "lunch," I've seen way way worst stuff on here than this, but I'm drunk, and just ate chicken.

[–]Bob_Saget_Enthusiast 16 points17 points ago

So if it's amazing and not WTF, then why did you post it here?

[–]PoisonSnow 5 points6 points ago

Because /r/WTF is a bit bigger than /r/Amazing

[–]x0mbigrl 4 points5 points ago

I have this burning desire to Shake-n-Bake that thumb.

[–]GnarlesBrewkowski 0 points1 point ago

Fascinating!

[–]blackpanther6389 0 points1 point ago

[–]Shrapnail 0 points1 point ago

My Ulnar nerve is fucked up somewhere and I lost most of the feeling in my pinky and ring finger along with that side of the hand

[–]Jackets298 0 points1 point ago

i love how clean it is dissected

[–]ItsMyUmbrella 0 points1 point ago

This isn't WTF. This is fascinating.

[–]luciferase0 0 points1 point ago

Superficial palmar arch FTW

[–]Warhawk2052 -1 points0 points ago

i once accidently stabbed myself in the hand im lucky to miss all my good parts

[–]bigglesxyz 0 points1 point ago

I know this sounds really like psychotic, but I always wanted to do this to a hand when I was younger. Just like cut open an arm and just pull on stuff and see how it works.

[–]heyopickle 0 points1 point ago

Tastes like chicken

[–]ayman85 2 points3 points ago

I work in an orthopedic surgical operating room and we had a patient come in who was attacked with a machete. He put his hands up to try and block the attack, and ended up getting his hands pretty badly cut up. While we were performing the surgery, the surgeon would pull on the tendons and we could see the fingers move with every pull. One of the coolest/disturbing things I have ever seen.

[–]lostsoldier 0 points1 point ago

Its cool as hell, but stinks like shit when you're in the anatomy lab

[–]TheBeefyMungPie 0 points1 point ago

I was going to ask how come there was no blood or skin, and then I saw you said it was a dissection.

Regardless, this is a really cool picture.

[–]z0rz 0 points1 point ago

[–]lucas63 1 point2 points ago

Grossly enough, I wanna see a video of the fingers moving and how the tendons move in the process.

I'm so amazed that something that intricate is programmed to develop on DNA in tiny cells. And 99.9% of the time, the hands works flawlessly. That's pretty incredible.

[–]KARMAgetsYA 0 points1 point ago

im more curious on how they were able to do this without damaging the veins or tendons and making it look as clean as it is... kinda sounds dark tho after i typed this lol

[–]kinsey3 0 points1 point ago

This is a fine dissection. I would recommend that those who appreciate this look into the work of Dr. Gunther von Hagens.

[–]demain_jeparterai 1 point2 points ago

In case any of you are interested in the other structures and don't feel like looking it up...

  1. The thumb muscles you see are called the "thenar" muscles. Although it's difficult to discern, there are three of them. Abductor pollicis brevis, Flexor pollicis brevis, and Opponens pollicis. These muscles are innervated by the median recurrent nerve.

  2. The muscles on the pinky side are called the "hypothenar" muscles. There are also three of these. Abductor digiti minimi, Flexor digiti minimi, and Opponens digiti minimi. These muscles are innervated by the ulnar nerve.

  3. As noted, the red arching structure comes from the ulnar artery and is called the Superficial Palmar Arch. It is actually an anastomoses (or fusion, I suppose) of ulnar artery and radial artery, with primary contribution from ulnar artery. You can't tell in this picture, but there is another arch deep to this one called the Deep Palmar Arch, which is primarily radial artery. The red arteries that are branching off the superficial arch are officially called Common Palmar Digital Arteries. They branch further into Proper Palmer Digital Arteries.

  4. The white tendons you see stretching out to each of the fingers are the tendons of Flexor Digitorum Superficialis. This is one of the muscles that runs in your Carpel Tunnel (it is actually a tunnel). The other muscles are Flexor Digitorum Profundus and Flexor Pollicis Longus (and Median Nerve)

The hand is really cool, I hope you guys find this information interesting!

I learned the functions of the Ulnar the hard way :( http://i.imgur.com/ZksfZ.png That was a few days after surgery to repair the nerve/artery (which apparently involved inserting a piece of sponge/conduit to bridge the nerve back together. I had apparently cut/mangled a solid chunk).I could barely unclaw my fingers then. Now, a few years later, the inner side of my hand always feels slightly asleep, with that super burning tingly feeling if touched, I also cannot cross any of my fingers.

[–]speeder111 0 points1 point ago

REEEEEEEPOOOOOOOOST. I wouldn't mind if people owned up to the fact that they're reposting instead of pawing it off as their original content.

I once went to a lab and got to handle some detached body parts. There was a hand like this, and it was one of my favorite pieces. You could actually still pull the tendons to make the fingers react! Best field trip ever, once you got used to the smell.
