I always assume that when someone online says they have terrible OCD, they actually mean that they browsed WebMD for 5 minutes.

[–]elRinbo 130 points131 points ago

I know, right? an appreciation for symmetry does not make one OCD.

[–]Broswagonist 26 points27 points ago

Tell my friends that, they don't seem to get it.

[–]wannabegenius 1 point2 points ago

Also, one cannot "be" OCD. The d is for disorder. It's a noun. You have it. /grammarnazi

[–]VicePresidente 224 points225 points ago

The window being out of place made me wash my hands 12 times or else I might get hit by a car

[–]bacon_cake 64 points65 points ago

I used to repeat things like using light switches, opening boxes, eating (etc) an equal amount of times with both hands in exactly the same way on all my fingers. If I felt like it was slightly wrong I would restart the entire process. Sometimes simple tasks would take me several minutes (taking huge amounts of time per day) and I would eventually get angry with things and break them in frustration which slowly forced me onto the edge of depression.

But hey, the people who say "my room is tidy, im so ocd lolz" are just as bad I'm sure.

[–]Hy-phen 6 points7 points ago

Thank you for posting this. If people know, they make light of it.

OCD = not too funny.

[–]bricardo 4 points5 points ago

I used to open and close drawers and do some weird movements around the room as a kid to the point of falling to the bed exhausted. It's not a pleasant thing. Even more unpleasant when you don't follow the compulsions.

[–]AkemiDawn 0 points1 point ago

I can sincerely see how that would be upsetting if you were suffering so terribly, but it is a continuum and people with milder manifestations of the disorder still need a way to describe what's happening to them. It's not a joke, but sometimes making a joke about "ocd lolz" is a non-confrontational way of getting people off your back if you are hung up on something they find trivial.

[–]krzyguy 1 point2 points ago

My sister was hospitalized because of her OCD. It costed my parents thousands of dollars for therapy and medication. She developed debilitating anorexia because of it (and nearly died). Luckily she's ok now. I agree that OCD is really not something to joke about, and it bugs me how funny they think it is because they dislike asymmetric things, but they really have no idea what it is and what people go through.

[–]midbc 27 points28 points ago

i had to run over 12 people with my car just so i could wash my hands

[–]Battletooth 14 points15 points ago

I just washed 12 people's hands so they can run me over with their cars.

[–]cattreeinyoursoul 12 points13 points ago

I threatened to run 12 people over if they didn't wash my car.

[–]willwork4hotdogs 10 points11 points ago

That window being out of place made me hand wash 12 people's cars.

[–]Neelpos 3 points4 points ago

I washed my cars 12 hands so that people wouldn't run it over.

[–]sure_bud 6 points7 points ago

I had to put 12 people through a car wash to continue this OCD variation comment thread

[–]moderatelybadass -1 points0 points ago

And that is when Doug and Dimmesdale Piranha hit upon.. the other other plan!

[–]noobit -1 points0 points ago

> Doug

> Dimmesdale

Good times

[–]moderatelybadass 0 points1 point ago

I started a thing a while back, wherein, I hide this little stuffed hedgehog in bizarre places where I know that people will find it. (They know the reference) Some of my favourites were the ones that lasted up to a week for them to notice, and things like hiding it in an empty coffee filter, inside the coffee maker. Also, for a while, I used fishing string and a bolt to rig it to fall on, or jump on people.

[–]jlullawlz 65 points66 points ago

The misuse of the term OCD used to extremely bother me. As someone with medically diagnosed OCD I have come to realize that almost nobody knows what it actually is. I've given up on trying to actually explain what it entails, and that I do not organize my shirts by color and fabric.

[–]TheRubberSole 7 points8 points ago

Please enlighten me; what kind of symptoms go along with real OCD then?

[–]jlullawlz 13 points14 points ago

I'll do my best to explain it. Now of course OCD is pretty different for most people with it, but mine really revolves around repeating actions to get rid of a thought. So say I had a thought that something terrible was going to happen I'd usually repeat what I was doing when that thought occurred until the "bad" thought goes away or is at least replaced by something I can tolerate. Usually for me this happens while I am washing my hands, walking or using electronics. This become's very frustrating and can make it difficult for me to get places in a timely matter. Also the more I give in to a compulsion the harder it becomes to stop. My OCD has actually changed over the years I used to have a huge fear of contaminations from germs but through Exposure Therapy I sort of got over that. OCD is sneaky though, It tends to come back in a different form. I hope I gave you a little more information. Thats just some of my symptoms though.

[–]TheRubberSole 2 points3 points ago

Wow, thank you. Like a lot of other people, I kind of assumed that it was obsessive organization. That's fascinating, though (awful as it may be).

[–]Flytch 7 points8 points ago

I'll just throw my experiences with OCD in here. Mine is the 'obsessive' variant which revolves around intrusive thoughts. Basically, I'll have an intrusive thought which is a random unpleasant thought that most people experience at some point. Where people like me with OCD differ is that we obsess over the significance of these thoughts, spiralling into a cycle of anxiety, panic and distress. We endlessly relive the thoughts to convince ourselves that we don't react to them the way we fear we will.

It is like being trapped inside your own mind with your worst fears. It is deeply unpleasant.

[–]9ninety_nine9 2 points3 points ago

My husband has this form of OCD. The intrusive thoughts that can at times be debilitating. When I tell people that he has OCD they assume he must be super tidy and I must have the most organised house. No, not at all, in fact its the opposite because he also has ODD which means his brain tells him not to put things away where they are supposed to go.

Are you on any medication for your intrusive thoughts? My husband is on ZOLOFT every day and takes Valium at night when the intrusive thoughts and paranoias get too bad.

[–]cherrycherrybangbang 0 points1 point ago

Yes this! I tend to obsess over a catastrophic thought to the point of exhaustion. There are certain things I have to do in order for the thought to subside. Things have to be done on a certain order and there is a process to everything. If my rituals are not preformed to my standards then I have to restart. It's not that I necessarily think if I don't, lets say, wipe down the bathroom sink a certain way/number of times, that said catastrophic thought will come true. Realistically I think part of me knows it won't, but I just don't know any other way to snap myself out of the thought cycle. I've been clinically diagnosed, and have been through much therapy. I am doing much better now. I find it insulting how some people think they are OCD just because they are very cleanly or enjoy symmetry. Okay I'll get off my soapbox now.

[–]Zafara1 0 points1 point ago

Jesus holy christ. This just opened a whole new view point into my life. Maybe I have OCD? I know I shouldn't look for diagnosis on the internet, but I thought it would be something I could delve into with a therapist later on.

I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety a long time back in my early teens (13 or so). And I never told my therapist about these thoughts because I obsessed over these thoughts and their implications and how far reaching they would be (Whether they would lock me up or send me to an asylum) and whether or not they were important at all.

But even today every time I talk to someone or do something or have something coming up those weird crazy thoughts come into my head and I spend days obsessing over them wondering if I'm a monster or a psychopath or just fucked up and it gives me mood swings and panic attacks and bouts of insomnia.

And go to work and I miss things and get anxious because I'm literally going over the million different scenarios in my head about my intrusive thoughts. I get this thought to punch my co-worker in the face or something and the entire day I'm just thinking "Holy shit, what is wrong with me? Am I fucking crazy. Am I mentally disturbed and unable to handle the real world?" and just go over that again and again until by luck it drifts away or is replaced by something else.

I never even considered that I could possibly have OCD or bring it up because I thought OCD was being neat and having everything in place. And I'm the exact opposite of that, I have a neat streak every now and again but I live messy as fuck.

[–]VestaDear 0 points1 point ago

It really depends on the person. I have a really mild diagnosis that became exacerbated when I was on two conflicting medications. I mostly was having compulsive symptoms, the most extreme of which was when I had a friend over and was getting out a DVD but when I opened the case a game was in it instead of the movie. So I found the movie and put it in but when I found it I found more games in the wrong cases. Fifteen minutes passed before I realized I had been sitting on the floor ignoring my guest to organize my game/DVD collection.

When I told the woman who prescribes me my medication what had been happening she laughed, and then fixed my dosage.

[–]blackkevinDUNK 2 points3 points ago

i have ocd about people pretending to have ocd

[–]levinathan 2 points3 points ago

I think that when most people say OCD, they really mean OCPD which fits more with the perfectionist mentality and unfortunately has a very similar name.

[–]bricardo 17 points18 points ago

I actually have OCD and it's distressing, and exhausting, and in no way related to weird placement of windows or pavement.

And for those who love to use OCD to describe themselves:

The phrase obsessive–compulsive has become part of the English lexicon, and is often used in an informal or caricatured manner to describe someone who is excessively meticulous, perfectionistic, absorbed, or otherwise fixated.[2]

Although these signs are present in OCD, a person who exhibits them does not necessarily have OCD, and may instead have obsessive–compulsive personality disorder (OCPD), an autism spectrum disorder, disorders where perseveration is a possible feature (ADHD, PTSD, bodily disorders or habit problems),[3] or no clinical condition.

There, you're just as likely to be autistic. Next time you feel like exposing your obsession with order just say "EVEN WITH MY TERRIBLE AUTISM, I ENJOY THIS."

[–]Flytch 2 points3 points ago

I have OCD as well, and distressing is an extremely appropriate word for it.

[–]nooneastern 0 points1 point ago

i find exhausting to be a perfect word for OCD fo me ... what is distressing to me is people throwing around the name of a serious disorder that makes mine and many other people's lives extremely difficult, and pictures like this have absolutely nothing to do with it

[–]allothernamestaken 4 points5 points ago

I'll bet OP has Asperger's and ADD, too.

[–]Snoop_Giraffe 7 points8 points ago

I always assume they mean OCPD

[–]darknecross 2 points3 points ago

You don't see people doing this kind of crap with other disorders.

"Hey guys, sorry I didn't feel like hanging out last night I just get really autistic sometimes."

"I could use a drink to unwind this weekend, my debilitating alcoholism is flaring up."

[–]Pr1vateD0nut 111 points112 points ago

I'm not trying to say that you're lying, it's just that the majority of the time people self diagnose OCD when they are mildly annoyed by a small thing, and that annoys me.

[–]kampfy3 98 points99 points ago

Sounds like you might have OCD OCD.

[–]bootselectric 44 points45 points ago

"I always have to make sure I have lead in my pencil before an exam, my OCD is so bad..."

[–]Calypsee 5 points6 points ago

Whenever somebody says something like that, I try to subtly get their OCD to happen when they're not noticing.

My friend said the other day, while one of his fries was stolen, leaving him with three 'ugh, I hate odd numbers. Can you take another? I only like even numbers'.

Then later, he asked me to turn up the volume on the TV. I asked him what he would like it set to. 'Around 20 or so'. 21, bitch. No complaints, no OCD.

[–]nopenever 1 point2 points ago

could be he is full of shit or could be that he fought his discomfort because you were there. there are things that i have problems with that I will just scream on the inside because people are around and I don't want them to notice, or I have other less noticeable compulsions I can do at the same time to deal with my obsessive thoughts so the person might not notice at the time. Could very well be that your friend is full of shit or could be that they were fighting their compulsion since you already saw him being weird with the french fry count.

there are varying levels of genuine OCD. everyone does not necessarily go 100% HULK smash as soon as something is off. some people just try to suffer through it because they realize their obsessive thoughts make no sense, but they can't help it.

sidenote: I was diagnosed with OCD over 10 years ago and have tried to keep it to myself. If one of my friends ever tried to test me with some stupid volume test and then proclaimed I am lying about my OCD I would probably snap and punch them in the throat.

Have a good day.

[–]elRinbo 1 point2 points ago

[–]grrrranimal 16 points17 points ago

no you shouldn't have. Everyone who says they have OCD just because they like things to be neat and orderly should be more careful.

[–]cresseychaos -3 points-2 points ago

...and yet, even with your terrible OCD, you were able to miss the letter 'e' from a word without a care.

[–]Zachary9 1 point2 points ago

My girlfriend twirls her hair and snaps it at the slightest thought of confusion or when the house is a little out of order. Its like living with a st. Bernard that purposely puts its hair into a pile.

[–]biirdmaan 1 point2 points ago

It's not even a self diagnosis usually. It's like a slur at this point. Like eating KFC and commenting on how black you feel or somethign stupid like that.

[–]Mshki 2 points3 points ago

I'm not OCD, but I do have a serious problem ignoring things that are out of place as well.

[–]Lotech -2 points-1 points ago

Being annoyed/bothered by seeing things out of place has nothing to do with the disability. Whether you have it or not I find it frustrating and wrong to perpetuate the myth.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]Lotech -1 points0 points ago

I'm not going to argue about what is or isn't OCD.

I'm sorry that you suffer with anxiety and i'm not belittling your struggles. However, OCD is not a quirk and it is so horribly misunderstood. I don't support anyone who would contribute to the misinformation of this terrible disorder.

[–]Guppywily 0 points1 point ago

So sad... :(

Everybody, let's take a moment of silence for unpajarito's terrible OCD.

He/she doesn't like seeing imperfect things and it makes him/her compulsively post silly shit on reddit obsessively.

So sad.

[–]bpiraeus -3 points-2 points ago

Be glad you don't suffer from CDO, it's much much worse.

[–]heymoron 0 points1 point ago

Or perhaps the term "OCD" has entered the vernacular for describing people who like things neat and they don't actually mean they are medically diagnosed with OCD just that they share some tendencies with people who do. Most people who use the term in this way probably realize that they don't actually have a problem that requires medical attention and are using the term more in jest than in seriousness.

[–]Fyrus 7 points8 points ago

Well that's dumb... OCD isn't a fun thing to have...

[–]DeFex 0 points1 point ago

FakeOCD is serious business.

[–]brighterside 0 points1 point ago

[–]MrConfucius 29 points30 points ago

[–]Laughing_Maine -1 points0 points ago

[–]singlerainbow -1 points0 points ago

That's not what fucking OCD is asshole. Jesus Christ reddit, shut the fuck up with these posts already.

[–]Zafon 0 points1 point ago

Why is the curtain not hanging vertically in that window? Either the law of gravity doesn't apply to that room, or - could it be photoshopped?

[–]Kulotee 0 points1 point ago

-.- Just because you like things being symmetrical doesn't mean your "So OCD". OCD is Thinking what awful, gruesome deaths await you/your loved ones the minute they step out the door, it's washing your hands hundreds of times a day, It's have non-stop disturbing sexual thoughts all day, every day. This is not OCD.

I would like to eat breakfast there every morning and just put my shit on the table and watch it fly off, but try and do it as best as possible.

[–]parramatta 0 points1 point ago

Shopped. The curtains in the window do not obey gravity.

I want to upvote the picture but I feel like I shouldn't because your title is probably wildly inaccurate.

[–]MayorChapstick 0 points1 point ago

[–]Mr_chiMmy -2 points-1 points ago

No, you don't have OCD. You never have had OCD and you never will have OCD. Fuck off.

[–]WalkinHawkin -1 points0 points ago

All the people saying OP doesn't have OCD please just stop posting. You have absolutely no way to know that they don't have it.

Seriously reddit would have some of the worst doctors.

  • Patient - Doc, I thi..thi..thi...thi...thi..think I have developed a stu...stu...stutt..stutter.
  • Reddit bred 'Dr' - No it's just a buzzword you are just self diagnosing. Here's a lollipop.
  • Patient - I'm twe...twe..twe..twent...
  • Reddit bred 'Dr' - Come on buddy.

[–]nooneastern 1 point2 points ago

you would think everyone would learn from the post the other day to stop jumping to conclusions here ...

[–]ubomw -1 points0 points ago

Some windows are opened, some not, and curtains aren't synchronised. I feel for you bro.

[–]timothy90 1 point2 points ago

This hurts to look at. And I don't have to be OCD for that to be true.

[–]D3LM3L -1 points0 points ago

[–]henazo -1 points0 points ago

[–]guyguy23 -1 points0 points ago

[–]Halfskis -5 points-4 points ago

Doesn't count as OCD when it is obviously photoshopped...

[–]SnoogleGoo 0 points1 point ago
