[–]teo5151 26 points27 points ago

Waiting for a nerdy comment on what those red circles near the sun are and how they are picked up by the camera.

[–]CTRL_ALT_RAPE 16 points17 points ago

They are space rainbows.

[–]Perk_i 38 points39 points ago

This shot was most likely taken with one of the Nikon D3s they have on the ISS, and even pro SLRs aren't really designed with sunlight that bright in mind. If I had to guess, I'd say it's probably reflections from the microlens grid or Bayer filter in front of the sensor bouncing back to the inside surface of one of the lens elements and back to the sensor. Could also be artifacting from really bright sunlight passing through one or more neutral density filters.

[–]TitaniumTurtle 40 points41 points ago

microlens grid or Bayer filter

I'm going with what this guy is saying. He used words I don't fully understand.

[–]matingslinkys 6 points7 points ago

I'm pretty sure that's actually a wall decoration from the 60s that my mum still has on her toilet wall...

[–]Perk_i 6 points7 points ago

A CMOS camera sensor is not a constant light sensitive sheet at a microscopic level like film is. Each pixel (generally) consists of a photodiode that only covers 25% of the total sensor surface. The rest of the space is given over to the printed circuitry required to read the photodiode values.

Every four photodiodes in a square are then covered with a colored filter, typically two green, one blue, and one red. This array of filters is called a Bayer filter. Its purpose is to only allow certain wavelengths of light to reach each of the photodiodes - one only sees red, one only sees blue, and two only see green. This allows for color values from the individual photodiode readings which would otherwise just be a luminance value.

Since the circuitry takes up so much of the sensor area, it decreases the overall light sensitivity of the sensor - photons tend to hit the circuitry instead of the photdiodes. To combat this, sensor manufactures use a microlens grid printed by photolithography onto the top of the sensor. The lenses are aligned such that they bend photons that would normally hit the circuitry into the photodiodes.

These are all microstructures, but they're all laid out in a nice square grid like the circles in the original image. I suspect given an intense enough light source, they're quite capable of throwing reflections around inside the camera - especially with the sun dead on like that.

Here's a much more detailed description of CMOS sensor design if you're interested: Olympus

[–]teo5151 3 points4 points ago

I love you.

[–]edwartica 0 points1 point ago

I always wondered what brand and make of camera they used. Any idea on the specs of the lens? I assume they don't swap lenses too often considering that might be difficult in space.

[–]Perk_i 2 points3 points ago

I don't know that NASA has ever done a write up on it with specifics, but this might be of interest. They have a large collection of bodies and lenses that have accumulated over the last few years, mostly Nikon.

[–]grumbelbart2 0 points1 point ago

Came here to ask this. I understand its probably bokeh, but what kind of lens system makes one like that?

[–]MAD_JIHAD 2 points3 points ago

A space lens.

[–]robgep 1 point2 points ago

I guess it's just blots of fat/dirt on the lens being illuminated by the sun. Not sure though.

[–]TheEdThing 1 point2 points ago

dirt? in space? can you clearify?

[–]robgep 0 points1 point ago

Well, not full-on mud, just a normal smeary lens I guess. As I sad: just making assumptions.

edit: nevermind, others have made more plausible explanations.

[–]CJ_Productions 0 points1 point ago

To be very vague, it's called lens flare.

[–]55555 -3 points-2 points ago

It's called bokeh. At least I think this is bokeh, though it could be some weird space/nasa camera science thing that just looks like bokeh. I've never seen bokeh in a grid like that.

[–]FortyFs 3 points4 points ago

I'm hoping someone more knowledgeable will come along and correct me, but I'll take a shot at it.

It is bokeh, but calling it such is a bit misleading.

The grid pattern and the effect itself is a result of a filter on the lens. The light is reflected off of the filter and hits the sensor again, producing these flares.

I've produced a similar effect myself taking photos of a subject against a window that had venetian blinds mostly closed. The result was a series of horizontal lines over top of the subject where it would not have been possible for the light to reach.

I repeated the photo without a UV filter (I think the type of filter is irrelevant, unless it's polarizing) and the effect disappeared.

[–]55555 1 point2 points ago

Thanks. I knew it wasn't just normal bokeh. I don't know why I got those downvotes though. I guess I didn't use enough science words.

I find it interesting that every real shot of space I've seen, there are no stars visible due to the sunlight. That must be real isolating to only see the sun and earth and nothing else.

[–]llewbop 0 points1 point ago

Why can't you see stars in space? Does anyone know?

[–]corpsmoderne 4 points5 points ago

Your eyes (and camera) accommodate to the quantity of light they receive. If you're on the lit side of your orbit, with the sun on one side and the earth reflecting sun's light on the other, there is no way to see stars, like you won't be able to see if a flashlight is on from a distance in sunlight. On the dark side of your orbit, lots of stars for sure.

[–]apatheticjester 1 point2 points ago

You can see stars in space, even if you were on the daylight side of the planet. On earth, during the day you can't see stars because the atmosphere is brighter than the stars and outshines them. In space there is almost no atmosphere so you don't have this problem.

Try taking a picture with a camera of the stars at night. You aren't going to have much luck without a very long exposure. Same thing happens in space. Also if you tried to take a picture of an astronaut and the stars, the astronaut would be overexposed+blurry.

Generally it takes specialized equipment or long exposures to take pictures of most stars.

[–]TheDerpofYork 0 points1 point ago

Probably a stupid question, but why can't we see stars in this picture?

[–]Crimson61 3 points4 points ago

Because the Suns so bright the camera has to be set to a certain exposure, but it means it can't take pictures of the stars. You also can't see any stars in the Moon Landing pictures.

[–]hahainternet 1 point2 points ago

Their orbit is really quick. EVA activities are often several orbits long.

[–]Cyanrev 0 points1 point ago

oh wow, that sounds logical and even more awe-inspiring... How 'quickly' does the iss orbit the earth?

[–]hahainternet 0 points1 point ago

It's about 90 minutes per orbit. It varies a little bit because the ISS is constantly sinking into the atmosphere and occasionally needs to be re-boosted.

Still, it's quick.

This is astronaut Akihiko Hoshide, the subject and taker of this picture.

Edit he is doing what is called an EVA (extravehicular activity)

[–]muttle 0 points1 point ago

the ultimate selfie

[–]CrabbyMcFartLice 2 points3 points ago

So for anyone wondering about the deets this is Aki Hoshide during his second spacewalk, on September 5th of this year. Easily identifiable because the Japanese flag on his left shoulder (the patch on the right shoulder is the modern 'EVA' patch, EVA stands for Extra Vehicular Activity, means a spacewalk). If there's someone from Japan in space, odds are it's him. I think he's the only astronaut from Japan who's been active on the ISS in the past like, five years. I know there's what-was-his-name who was on the ISS in the 2000s, but he hasn't straddled a Soyuz to the ISS, I don't think ever. However Soichi Noguchi (googled his ass) took the cooler ride to the ISS, which was the Space Shuttle. For ya all who live under a rock, the Shuttle program was retired last year.

Hoshide has been on the last three spacewalks on the ISS, along with Sunita Williams, and those have been his first three spacewalks, too. It's pretty impressive that he's racked up over 20 hours of EVA time since late August. There are only five astro/cosmonauts who have more than 50 hours of accumulated spacewalk time, and in three months he's cranked out almost 21 and a half hours doing thoroughly critical EVAs on the ISS. Clearly, NASA, JAXA, Roscosmos, and everyone else involved with the ISS put a lot of faith him and his ability to get the job done. So mad props to you, Aki Hoshide, you're totally tits at fixing shit in space.

wow the space behind the astronaut really does look like an empty void of nothing, where are all the stars you see on regular space photos?

[–]Number127 1 point2 points ago

Space photos make it easy for our senses to trick us, because on earth a black sky means it's dark. But in space the sky is always black, even when (as you can see here) the sun is right in the middle of the frame. In fact it's incredibly bright, way too bright for the camera to pick up stars. If you adjusted the camera to be sensitive enough to detect the stars, the rest of the photo would be totally washed out.

[–]Deecimal 0 points1 point ago

ohh I see, thanks for point that out

[–]echc47 0 points1 point ago

Aliens

[–]joespit -1 points0 points ago

Space and views from space are different than perspective from earth. Look at the red bull guy that made that jump from the stratosphere notice no stars. You have to remember we see stars planets and moons because they are reflective of the sun's position on the earth. Notice that the moon changes color in certain months yellow, white, red its because of the suns position, and lets not get into light pollution from the cities.

[–]Mr_Mutton -1 points0 points ago

WOOOSH!

[–]Goth1986 1 point2 points ago

We do not see other stars because they are reflecting light from our own Sun - we see them because they are brighter than the surrounding space. I'm still surprised when I see these pictures and there is absolutely NO sign of background stars, even considering the relative intensity of the Sun. There are a lot of them, some are very bright and telescopes in space routinely image these field stars as they go about other business. We see the same lack of field stars in pictures of astronauts on the moon. Does someone have a rock-solid reason for this? Is it really just because of the adjusted camera sensitivity?

[–]joespit 0 points1 point ago

IF city lights can block out stars then could the sun outside planet earth block out all stars and a camera flash while we are in outer space? Trippy but follow me in that logic.

I wanted to be an astronaut once. Then I realized you have to go through atleast five years of the airforce, then into NASA...my dad's buddy who was in the space program had to wait 10 years before getting a mission in space. FUCK THAT
