[–]Sketch13 1 point2 points ago

I hate this hacker crap!

[–]MstrKief 3 points4 points ago

That "ah ah ah" thing is always in my head. I'll repeat it like the movie but no one ever gets the reference :/. Also "Dino-mite!"

[–]thomasthefinch 37 points38 points ago

Dilophosaurus didn't have a neck fin. Or at least there was absolutely no evidence to suggest there was a neck fin.

Whilst we are on Dilophosaurus, they are also huge, 20ft or 6m long. They didn't spit poison either.

Jurassic Park is my favourite film, BUT IT LIED TO ALL OF US!

[–]Aurilion 20 points21 points ago

Don't forget that Velociraptors are only about the size of a chicken or a turkey, other species of Raptor however are that size.

[–]ColostomySquad 16 points17 points ago

Would anyone else kinda love to have a flock of insane chicken size dinosaurs? Because I think that would rule.

[–]Abedeus 24 points25 points ago

I'd rather see a flock of insane dinosaur-sized chickens.

[–]Wanderlustfull 17 points18 points ago

So... chocobos then?

[–]ArgonGryphon 1 point2 points ago

Well which dinosaur?

[–]Abedeus 3 points4 points ago

Let's say, ultrasaurs.

[–]ArgonGryphon 0 points1 point ago

Hm so the chicken would be the size of it all the way to the neck? Or just the body size the same and the head and neck is normal chicken proportion? Or Sauropod proportion chicken? lol

[–]Abedeus 0 points1 point ago

Let's say that you'd make a chicken that weighted as much as an ultrasaur.

[–]ArgonGryphon 0 points1 point ago

So it'd be even larger in size than an ultrasaur, birds are more than likely less dense than a sauropod, even chickens which are pretty dense for birds.

[–]Abedeus 0 points1 point ago

Maybe not larger as in height, but a bit bigger.

Then again, we don't know if birds of that weight would still have those "light bones" you are likely referring to. There might be a reason why there are no "super huge" birds that weight dozens of kgs.

[–]siggestondibabu 1 point2 points ago

And then, Nandos

[–]Altyrnate 5 points6 points ago

Only if they can open doors.

[–]ArgonGryphon 2 points3 points ago

A pack of velociraptors could probably kill people fairly easily, they were more than likely highly intelligent.

[–]TheSecretMe 0 points1 point ago

That's pretty much the flock of compsognathus they used in the other movies.

[–]Berticus88 1 point2 points ago

Not after seeing Dieter Stark get eaten by a pack of compsognathus in the Lost World: Jurassic Park (sorry, no clip). Not saying he didn't deserve it, because he totally did.

[–]exatreide 0 points1 point ago

So would you rather fight a 100 chicken sized dinosaurs or a ....ahhh fuck it.

[–]JPKestrel 2 points3 points ago

They also have found evidence to suggest they were feathered

[–]Aurilion 0 points1 point ago

Don't talk to me about feathers. I know the JP3 Raptors were slightly more anotomically correct but they just looked like cuddly Teddy's to me.

[–]Berticus88 0 points1 point ago

T-Rex had feathers too, to keep it warm when it's young. As it grows older it gets bigger and produces more heat and loses those feathers.

[–]GaryGronk 1 point2 points ago

It's the name. The Utahraptor was large and nasty but didn't sound as cool as the Velociraptor. Stupid Mormon chicken.

[–]ShotgunPanda 4 points5 points ago

This confused me so much when I was looking for the difference between Deinonychus and Velociraptors.

Jurrasic Park and its lies!

[–]TheSecretMe 2 points3 points ago

There's an entire family of those velociraptor type dinosaurs with the toe claw. Ranging from the size of a chicken to most likely larger than a t-rex.

[–]RelatedJeopardyClue 0 points1 point ago

As the sound designer in the 1993 movie Jurassic Park, he used samples from a swan, hawk, rattlesnake, and howler monkey to make the Dilophosaurus come to life.

[–]17Hongo 0 points1 point ago

Fossil Evidence suggests that Dilophosaurus actually had two fin-shaped crests on it's head. Jurassic Park is a great film, but it doesn't carry much scientific weight at all.

[–]nevernovelty 3 points4 points ago

So all those Mosquitos I trapped and put in resin after sucking my blood are useless to future life forms that may wish to bring me back?

[–]zrag123 3 points4 points ago

wish to bring me back?

There's your problem.

[–]17Hongo 0 points1 point ago

Not unless you want someone cloning a metric fuckton of mosquitos, no.

[–]dw1813275 0 points1 point ago

I just want you to know that I am really glad you and Rachel ended up together.

[–]swerdee 0 points1 point ago

Shut the fuck up

[–]maximusponderus 0 points1 point ago

Any scientists on reddit who want to attempt and engineer such a dinosaur?

[–]brendendrew 105 points106 points ago

Fake, dilophosaurus' are extinct.

[–]Irwe 55 points56 points ago

Fake, there are no paleontological evidence that dilophosaurus had that kind of neck-thingy or could spit venom as it do in jurassic park.

[–]herpty_derpty 49 points50 points ago

I was devastated when I found out the velociraptor may have looked more like this.

[–]pagodapagoda 45 points46 points ago

If it makes you feel better, the Utah Raptor did indeed look like the dinosaur in the movie. Spielberg just used the word velociraptor because, come on, velociraptor sounds fucking awesome.

Velociraptor.

[–]XenoRat 15 points16 points ago

Utahraptor was the right size but they's no reason to think it was bald and scaly when all its relatives were feathered. The 'too big to need insulation' argument is hard to defend after they found a fluffy thirty foot tyrannosauroid.

[–]Netzapper -1 points0 points ago

If I'm not mistaken, the really excellent, obvious, incontrovertible mostly-feathered-dinosaurs evidence all came after Jurassic Park. So I can't fault them for having scaly dinosaurs.

The novel, however, came out in 1990. This is well after the 1975 discovery of utahraptor. If Michael Chrichton were more interested in getting his science straight and less interested in sowing technophobic doubt, it could have been utahraptors in the book and movie.

So, yeah, the species is the bigger fault IMO.

[–]burninrock24 0 points1 point ago

the really excellent, obvious, incontrovertible

So many adjectives!

[–]Netzapper 0 points1 point ago

So little time.

[–]XenoRat 0 points1 point ago

Deinonychus Antirrhopus was close to the movie raptors size, and I read somewhere that when Crichton wrote JP some paleontologists were regarding it as a species of velociraptor. V. Deinonychus? So that was probably just a case of science marches on.

What really annoyed me was what Spielberg did to the poor dilophosaurus.

[–]ClodKnocker 7 points8 points ago

Wasn't it actually deinonychus? I read somewhere that when Crichton wrote the book deinonychus and velociraptor were mixed up... Plus deinonychus actually has the badass toe thing....

[–]crackajackjones 3 points4 points ago

Deinonychus was a dromaeosaur along with velociraptor and utahraptor and all three had the retractable claw.

[–]barath_s 6 points7 points ago

Except that Utahraptor was discovered AFTER the movie. Most references when the movie came out said that Spielberg simply made the raptors larger and without feathers to make them scarier.

This reference says that Spielberg modeled the raptor after Deinonychus antirrhopus which one researcher classified as a Velociraptor ( Velociraptor antirrhopus). It is rather undercut by the fact that they were still referred to as V. mongoliensis

[–]pagodapagoda 1 point2 points ago

Whoa. TIL.

[–]ArgonGryphon 0 points1 point ago

Actually, it was because Utahraptor was only discovered shortly before the movie came out. They basically just scaled up velociraptors for the movie, and it just happened that there really was a raptor approximately that size.

[–]tripinbalz 13 points14 points ago

I think that looks awesome.

[–]ocelotpotpie 15 points16 points ago

It looks awesome, but it's only about a foot tall.

Utahraptor, though. Big guy!

[–]critropolitan 2 points3 points ago

I thought utahraptor is known only from a single claw and its actual dimensions are basically speculative?

[–]hungry-ghost 11 points12 points ago

i think it looks fabulous.

ftfy

[–]Wakasaki_Rocky 0 points1 point ago

I think it looks tasty.

[–]i_cast_kittehs 1 point2 points ago

With mustard and vinegar

[–]StezzerLolz 3 points4 points ago

Yeah. I've spent some time working with free-range chickens and, well, let's just say I'll never trust anything with feathers again. Those little bastards are vicious...

[–]pedanticheron 3 points4 points ago

I shared this sentiment until my youngest son parroted this from xkcd on feathers.. This TED talk on chickens from dinosaurs was also pretty cool.

[–]Ironki 0 points1 point ago

yeah but they're working on the theory of 'polar dinosaurs'.

[–]TheSecretMe 1 point2 points ago

I think that only makes it worse. It's soft, feathery, kind of cute.

And it learned to hunt in packs so it can latch onto larger prey and literally shred them into ribbons with those claws.

[–]TheeFlipper 0 points1 point ago

Hey man, that just means that Dr. Grant's idea that many of the dinosaurs just evolved into birds sounds way more likely.

EDIT: If this sounds weird, then I apologize. I was waay to tired when I posted this.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

WTH, could that shit fly?

[–]crackajackjones 0 points1 point ago

Naw this was before the evolution into birds. The transition species from dinosaur to bird was archaeopteryx. It also could not fly but paleontologists think that it could climb trees and glide or jump and flap to catch bugs.

[–]LeftHandedFapper -1 points0 points ago

I have a mild fear of large birds (Ostritches emus and that terrorbird the cassowary) so this still freaks me out. Makes me wonder how different Jurassic Park would have been had they made the dinos look like that though.

[–]SirTheBob 0 points1 point ago

[–]IronLung420 0 points1 point ago

Still pretty cool.

[–]thatissomeBS -1 points0 points ago

But there are feathers on that. Don't tell me you're one of them weird guys that thinks birds evolved from dinosaurs. Humph, evolution, lol.

/sarcasm

[–]Greellx 6 points7 points ago

Yes, it is not real. It was added to the movie for the sake of making it more exciting.

[–]MookieB307 31 points32 points ago

Fake, those were real dinosaurs. Jurassic Park was a documentary.

[–]Greellx 8 points9 points ago

About one black mans rise to power and fame...only to struggle internally with what he has become...to reconcile with himself, he stages his death, leaving his arm behind in the generator room for it to be discovered while he escapes with the only emergency escape helicopter on the entire island. Jurrasic Park - Starring Samuel L Jackson.

[–]April_Fabb 2 points3 points ago

Yes, everything was a very fine documentary until that girl screamed "I know this!"

[–]crackajackjones 0 points1 point ago

He left us... HE LEFT US!

[–]iCole 3 points4 points ago

Next thing you'll tell me that Titanic wasn't a documentary from 1912.

[–]FaptainAwesome 3 points4 points ago

I firmly believe it was also meant to scare the shit out of 7 year olds who watched it at the drive-in with their families. Only time I ever had a night terror, fucking Jurassic Park and of COURSE that asshole dinosaur was the star of it.

[–]Poza 3 points4 points ago

did you wake up in a plane and realize that the passengers are velociraptors?

[–]FaptainAwesome 1 point2 points ago

No, thankfully. But I did have a velociraptor get loose in my school.

[–]ArgonGryphon 0 points1 point ago

Velociraptors are only like a foot, foot and a half tall.

[–]FaptainAwesome 0 points1 point ago

Yeah I know, the movie version was really more like Deinonychus than any other dino.

[–]ArgonGryphon 1 point2 points ago

Or Utahraptor.

[–]craniumonempty 1 point2 points ago

Would you rather have one Jurassic Park velociraptor or a hundred prehistoric velociraptors?

[–]ArgonGryphon 0 points1 point ago

You mean hunting me? One JP raptor. Pack hunting is a huge advantage. Utahraptor might be a threat on its own, I'm not sure, but most raptors were at their best in a pack. A single animal would be easier to outsmart.

It really depends a lot though. Location, conditions, etc. But generally, the single JP raptor.

[–]ColostomySquad 2 points3 points ago

Yep. I sat playing with my shoes on the floor for the terrifying bits. I remember loving the toilet scene though!

[–]yonnie 1 point2 points ago

i have a special needs cousin on the east coast who insists that we repeat that scene at least 50 times. every time. thanks for reminding me! miss that guy.

[–]ArgonGryphon 0 points1 point ago

I must have been too nerdy, that movie didn't scare me in the slightest, I loved that movie.

[–]EvilbuddhaNZ 3 points4 points ago

Fake, just because there is no evidence doesn't mean they didn't have that neck-thingy or could spit venom. Show me the evidence disproving this and then I will believe you. Stop trying to ruin Jurassic Park for me.

[–]MarkSWH 6 points7 points ago

In Jurassic Park, they were reconstructions with frog DNA mixed in - why should their dinosaurs be exact copies of the real, past ones? You could explain that neck-frill as an anomaly. I don't know. I still like it very much despite its numerous inaccuracies.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

so what dinosaurs had the neck thing and spit poison?

[–]crackajackjones 0 points1 point ago

Came here for this. Was not disappointed.

[–]MarTango 2 points3 points ago

dilophosauruses?

dilophosauri?

[–]JacobCurry 3 points4 points ago

Dilophosaurs. Drop the "u" when talking about dinosaurs.

[–]jx84 2 points3 points ago

Life, uhhhh... finds a way.

[–]makesmewannadance 65 points66 points ago

older than the internet

[–]baskinghobo 1 point2 points ago

You see i keep hearing this phrase and a lot of the time i havn't seen old goodies such as these. I guess i haven't being on the internet long enough. Where do people find them? 4chan? email? forums?

[–]Epic_baconnage 15 points16 points ago

Yes.

[–]I_eat_your_cats 8 points9 points ago

I thought he was making a joke. Y'know, cause dinosaurs are older than the Internet.

[–]Dub_Heem 3 points4 points ago

This was posted about two or three days ago on /r/gifs with the exact same title. Hang around for another week or so and you might even see it again.

[–]TheSecretMe 1 point2 points ago

Back in the 90s before social media and content aggregator sites ruled the internet people gathered in fora and news groups to share things.

The worst offender of all was the dreaded chain email. People sending "funny" things CC'd to everyone in their email contact list. Those emails would end up with subject lines full of re: and cc: because how often they'd been replied and forwarded.

A lot of those pictures are still around. Except now they end up on places like 9gag, imgur and facebook shares.

[–]baskinghobo 1 point2 points ago

thanks, now that i think about it i do remember seeing quite a bit of these old stuff on sites like funnyjunk and ebaumsworld when i used to go there. But i wasn't there for long which is why i might have missed these stuff. Also care to explain what "fora" means?

EDIT: also the fact that i'm on reddit, the site where everyones an internet veteran and hates old content i guess thats one of the reasons why.

[–]KrayDay 0 points1 point ago

"Fora" is the (technically) correct plural form of forum.

Source: 3 years of Latin.

[–]TheSecretMe 0 points1 point ago

Fora is a the proper plural of forum. People tend to be simplistic savages and use forums instead.

[–]playerIII 1 point2 points ago

[–]cheeseconqueso 1 point2 points ago

I've seen it but I can't be mad...shit's simply hilarious. I will chuckle again when somebody posts it six months from now.

[–]HardcoreHazza 0 points1 point ago

To be fair, whether you go out with a dilophosaurus, it usually rains venom.

[–]Tanshinmatsudai 1 point2 points ago

Repost. Still laughed. Still gave an upvote.

[–]bmw- 0 points1 point ago

Reminds me of the Frill-neck lizard wiki page

[–]critropolitan 0 points1 point ago

*Dilophasarus as imagined by Spielberg to be more like a monster and less like something that actually ever existed.

[–]GaryGronk 0 points1 point ago
