does anyone have a link to just the picture? (no New York, the city and the storm etc...)

Edit:http://i.imgur.com/aXoJS.jpg found it if anyone is interested

[–]Cletus_VanDamme 18 points19 points ago

Was that taken with an iphone or something? there's a ton of noise in that photo.

[–]AcerRubrum 119 points120 points ago

Low light conditions require a very high ISO, or sensitivity to light, which is the reason for all the noise. If the photographer had a much more stable vantage point than what was likely a helicopter from which to take this picture, they could have use a lower ISO and held the shutter open longer to make the photo cleaner, but with the circumstances, it needs to be noisy.

[–]themanfromreddit 194 points195 points ago

Also helicopters are noisy.

[–]ColbyTheDog 71 points72 points ago

Yes they are. Good job.

[–]_31415_ 11 points12 points ago

[–]Olive_Garden 1 point2 points ago

The condescending is strong in this one.

[–]oomio10 7 points8 points ago

source?

[–]Everyone_Loves_Ramen 18 points19 points ago

As a helipad, I can confirm that they are indeed noisy.

[–]flume 11 points12 points ago

as an ipad, you can go to hel.

[–]callida 2 points3 points ago

As a pad, you can go to bloody hell.

[–]flume 0 points1 point ago

I don't even need to hover to know this is a period joke. Nicely done.

[–]unknownsoldierx 4 points5 points ago

This pic almost destroyed my speakers.

[–]asshair -1 points0 points ago

10/10.

[–]cclementi6 2 points3 points ago

Also, it's a low res photo. And i'm pretty sure a lot of the "noise" in the water are just waves.

[–]dunkellic 12 points13 points ago

This doesn't like like noise but more like jpeg compression artifacts (and with ~74kb filesize not surprising).

[–]BWalker19 1 point2 points ago

The bottom left black part of the image makes me think this too, its all blocky instead of just noisy like most of the other parts of the image. I wouldnt be surprised if its both.

Also i doubt the photo would be on the front of the magazine if the only copy they had was like that.

[–]WhyImNotDoingWork 7 points8 points ago

I agree. This woud be tough even for solid reproduction in a newspaper at this quality because you wouldn't be able to get cmyk toning to a place where those blotches started to show.

All new cameras really dont have that much noise even at 6,400 ISO (still blows my mind) this thing has probably been uploaded, downloaded then uploaded again to facebook like 6 times, compressed each time, resized, had NR run, then sharpening by someone after just to say fuck you. But thats better than not have the image at all.

[–]cobaltgnawl 7 points8 points ago

If I had a dollar for every pixel in this photo, Id have 75 cents. -Youtube

[–]SteelGun 1 point2 points ago

Also, in addition to what Acer said, it is rehosted on imgur, and because it is a jpeg, the quality is decreased, increasing noise, grain, ect. Even comparing the original picture and this, you can see a significant quality drop.

[–]swth 0 points1 point ago

what do you mean by "noise"

[–]hupcapstudios 8 points9 points ago

Ppccchhhchchchxcpppkkkkkkchchchchchchccppppkkkk

[–]Drewcah 0 points1 point ago

I would be willing to bet that it was taken by a small drone with a camera attached. It seems this is the new technology of aerial photography.

http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2012/01/helicopter-drone-flies-hd-cam-through-a-snowstorm/

Check out the video if you have 3:42 to see what continues to take helicopters out of the equation. Plus the possibilities of business opportunities is ENDLESS!

Did a little bit of photoshopping to make it iPhone 5 friendly as a wallpaper.

[–]stockmasterflex 1 point2 points ago

what was the date and time this was taken?

I was under the impression that the entire side was out, I didn't know a little section was still on. Also, how is power getting to just that area and not the rest? Underground wires?

[–]likemylongname 1 point2 points ago

Apparently that section is tied into to the power grid for the new WTC building, which never lost power. My brother lives in one of the buildings that is in that grid.

[–]ilikemanytrains 5 points6 points ago

The new WTC lost power for about 2 days, but the financial district was on the entire time. Source: I'm in Hoboken with a clear view of Manhattan. About a day later, WTC regained power but the rest of Lower Manhattan remained dark, which is when this picture was taken

[–]stockmasterflex 0 points1 point ago

oh, awesome thanks.

[–]coppeis 1 point2 points ago

Can I get that wall paper size?

[–]original_evanator 3 points4 points ago

Yes but why would you want a paper-size wall?

Check back in 9 months...many babies will be born in NY.

[–]AcerRubrum 97 points98 points ago

So many Jaydens, Hudsons, Holdens, Matildas, and Wrens will be filling the world come next summer. Hipsters are terrible at baby names.

[–]DAngelo_Barksdale 127 points128 points ago

Sandys...

[–]AcerRubrum 34 points35 points ago

Even the boys

[–]I_divided_by_0- 33 points34 points ago

I knew a guy named Stony, because his mother wanted a girl named Sandy, he came out a boy, and his dad said "Fuck it, we'll call him Stony"

[–]themanfromreddit 51 points52 points ago

Should've been Rocky.

[–]I_poke 5 points6 points ago

He's got nerves of steel!

[–]SirRonaldofBurgundy 0 points1 point ago

He's a wrecking machine!

[–]bugxbuster 4 points5 points ago

Please have an answer for this: How much of a pothead was Stony?

[–]flume 6 points7 points ago

A guy from my high school had stoners for parents. His middle and last name were "Blaize Roche" -- pronounced "blaze roach."

[–]wasp_ent 1 point2 points ago

cool ass name

[–]demon1255 2 points3 points ago

My neighbor had a horse named Stony.

[–]Kubaker1 4 points5 points ago

My neighbor had a rock named stony.

[–]demon1255 5 points6 points ago

I had a rock once too. They're so loyal!

[–]nameless_faceless 0 points1 point ago

There is a guy in my small town named Stone.

[–]coooolbeans 4 points5 points ago

Lots of Jews in NYC, so Sandy Koufax would be a good person to name a son after.

[–]Irrepressible_Monkey 1 point2 points ago

"Sandy" is a well-known short version of "Alexander" here in Scotland.

[–]wepa 0 points1 point ago

I know a man named Sandy, it's basically a unisex name. Even though I believe all names should be unisex.

[–]pizzaparty183 4 points5 points ago

I like to think I'm pretty openminded but I don't think I could date a girl named "Craig" or "Thomas"

[–]AcerRubrum 1 point2 points ago

Even though I believe all names should be unisex.

This attitude is why there are so many Madisons and Lees running around New York Public Schools.

[–]wepa -1 points0 points ago

And what is the problem with that?

[–]Wirenutt 12 points13 points ago

On the school bus I drive, I have a Jayden, with older brother Braden.

I have two sisters, named Felicity and Serenity.

I also have two Hunters, one of each sex, and several female Madisons. But I also have an Elizabeth and a Martha. All are 10 years old or less.

[–]diearzte2 2 points3 points ago

So what's that like? Do you like doing it?

[–]Wirenutt 45 points46 points ago

Yes. I'm retired from a 31-year career from which I collect a nice pension. I like to drive, it's fairly easy, I work about 6 hours a day (3 in the am, 3 in the pm), it pays well (I net about $2500/month), and when you get the kids to realize that the rules of the bus are there so you can get them home safely because you care about them (and I do), most of them will cooperate just fine. School buses now generally have video cameras, so if a kid does something and you don't see them do it, you go to the video and find the culprit 100% of the time. They have also saved my ass a couple of times from accusations of being creepy to a 10-year-old girl by her mother (video proved it a perfectly appropriate innocent conversation I initiated because she was the last one off the bus and seemed anxious, which her hyper-religious and paranoid mom had a fit over) and of swearing at a student (video showed HE was the one swearing at ME, and I was highly commended by the district superintendent on how I handled that situation.)

Fortunately, I qualify for the job because I've led a clean life. They do background checks, credit checks, federal and local fingerprints, drug tests and breathalyzer at your physical, as well as random drug and alcohol tests without notice. I've never been arrested, and I haven't done weed since the 70's.

Just like anything in life, you have that 5% of people that you have to spend 90% of your time dealing with. As it turns out, I ended up driving for the school district from which I graduated 37 years ago. Plus, I live a 4-minute walk from the school. No commute.

My coworkers and I joke that it'd be the perfect job if it wasn't for all those damn kids that keep getting on. I enjoy it and actually look forward to going to work. And I work with some great people, very few of whom have the bus driving gig as their only income. One guy owns an apple orchard, one is a town councilman, another drives an 18-wheeler, yet another drives a city bus at night and another drives a hotel shuttle bus. A couple of the women are barmaids, another woman works her horse farm. For myself, I fix and build computers, buy and sell on ebay, and on weekends, I DJ parties.

[–]diearzte2 6 points7 points ago

Thank you for this response.

[–]piecrazy47 4 points5 points ago

You seem to lead a very interesting and exciting life, live it up.

[–]dohko_xar 3 points4 points ago

Life, you are winning it.

[–]Wirenutt 9 points10 points ago

Thanks. Sometimes I have to step back to see how lucky I've been, and realize that much of the time, you make your own luck.

I was very lucky to get to work for the same company for 31 years, but then, companies don't keep you around for that long if you are a shitbird. So, that's some luck I helped make for myself. When I retired, I got a job as a service manager at a Kawasaki shop, and that was a fun job I'd have like to have kept, but the economy tanked after I'd been there a little over a year and they had to cut back, so the guy that made the most bank had to go, so off I went.

Then I got hired by a company doing work similar to what I did for 31 years, or so it seemed before I started. They claimed to want a professional to correct a wide range of problems, which I was eager to dig into. But alas, those problems were created by middle management cutting corners, and they didn't take it well when I refused to cut those corners, since I was hired to correct the original problems caused by... cutting corners. I stood my ground and told them I would do it correctly and professionally, or not at all. We parted ways after 7 months. They prefer quantity over quality. I don't work that way. I didn't build a career and reputation of being one of the best there is by doing what I do half-assed. The world has changed and it has passed me by.

I guess my point is that things are going well for me now because I spent decades hustling, upgrading my skills and education, making hard choices, doing the right thing when I had those hard choices, sacrificing, and just generally building myself a reputation of being dependable, reliable, (I have not missed a day of scheduled work in many years, at least 10, because I don't really remember the last time, and it's probably sometime in the early 90's) and getting the job done through hard work, creativity, and tapping experts if I didn't know the answers. And especially, if I didn't know the answer, be humble and admit it and then go out and find it.

With driving the school bus, my employer's name and my bosses phone number are plastered all over the bus. I drive it over 25,000 miles per year, and I have never had another motorist call my boss and complain about anything I did wrong on the road. The key is to be as passive as you possibly can when driving a bus. That, and knowing the rules of the road. Road rage or driving aggressively has no place behind the wheel of a bus. Now, with the right mindset, you can really see what idiots so many other drivers really are. Take a deep breath, smile and chill. If you are within eyesight of a school bus, the driver can see you and will know right away if you know what you are doing, or if you are an idiot pretty quickly. Two weeks a go, I had a sub riding with me, and as a kind of awareness exercise, I counted every illegal thing the drivers surrounding me committed, and counted 87 things during a 50 minute run.

Wow, sorry for the pseudo-rant.

[–]david241 1 point2 points ago

So bestof worthy

[–]prettykitty2012 2 points3 points ago

Is Madison a typically male name? I have three friends in their late 20's, early 30's named Madison and they're all chicks. Just wondering if they are the exception.

[–]Wirenutt 3 points4 points ago

I'm in my 50's and have never known anyone named Madison of either sex.

Maybe I need to expand my circle of friends. :-)

[–]nameless_faceless 0 points1 point ago

You need to find someone with a girl in 4th to 8th grade.

[–]missmediajunkie 1 point2 points ago

Female, thanks to a little movie called "Splash" that popularized the name in the 80s.

[–]Frankeh1 0 points1 point ago

Wren? Really? Hahaha. Poor bastards.

[–]nameless_faceless 1 point2 points ago

Jaydens are for the suburban people, along with Madison, Addison, McKayla, Isabelle, Payton, Avery, Aiden, Braden, Hayden, Olivia, Jace, etc. People with no imagination. I have a 17 y/o named Henrietta, and we call her Hattie. She came close to being Matilda, and call her Mattie. Thank god I didn't pick that one.

[–]AuntieSocial 9 points10 points ago

At least one person NEEDS to name their storm-baby Stormageddon. This is the perfect excuse.

[–]wepa 4 points5 points ago

No man, Frankenstorm!

[–]austinette 5 points6 points ago

Someone with last name Storm can be Francis Nathaniel Storm, or Frank N. Storm.

[–]boydrh 1 point2 points ago

twins: Frank and Strom (not a typo)

[–]Roboticide 0 points1 point ago

I thought Daenerys would be the obvious choice.

OMA, Herzog & de Meuron, SOM, Zaha Hadid... Damn, that guy is big.

[–]MrDannyOcean 42 points43 points ago

I feel guilty almost. I live just above the blackout line in midtown. Have had full power, plenty of food all week.

Feels good but feels bad man.

[–]eatsnow 18 points19 points ago

I was one block below the blackout line. Fuck you, you lucky lucky bastard. (But thanks for letting me crash on your couch for 5 days.)

[–]sigaven 10 points11 points ago

Eatsnow, you should take a picture of the line itself! Surely there's a street somewhere up there where one side is completely lit, and the other side is completely black?

[–]piff167 3 points4 points ago

This is about as good of a picture as i could get of the border between light and dark. this picture was taken on 37th street, I believe (no lights, hard to read the signs). Sorry about the quality; camera phone's can only do so well in a no-light situation.

[–]eatsnow 3 points4 points ago

I did! This was the view from my apartment. http://i.imgur.com/JCjwK.jpg

[–]Uncoolio 1 point2 points ago

I live five blocks below it. I would have taken a picture but I kept my phone off whenever possible to stretch the battery.

[–]sigaven 7 points8 points ago

Walk over there, turn on phone, snap photo, upload to Imgur & reddit, turn phone off. Imagine all the karma. Imagine it.

[–]Uncoolio 12 points13 points ago

Power came back last night, there's no line to photograph. This is the closest I have to an interesting photo.

[–]piff167 1 point2 points ago

thats bonkers. what street exactly?

[–]diearzte2 0 points1 point ago

We have power again now.

[–]compto35 8 points9 points ago

I'm about a mile away from Coney Island. I went out there to volunteer today, and felt so, so guilty. I never lost power, internet, safe water, or any sort of property. In fact, I saved money this week because I worked from home and didn't have to pay for food or transit. Coney Island still doesn't have street lights, and the water is mostly sewage.

So, so guilty.

[–]JohnTheRev 3 points4 points ago

I've been without power in Hoboken until today and I feel guilty that's all that happened to me. Walk one block in any direction and people's entire material lives are discarded curbside. It's weird to think next week I'll have a minor inconvenience in my commute, while my neighbor will be requesting FEMA assistance and looking for a place to live.

[–]patssle 2 points3 points ago

After Ike, half my street had power. The other half didn't have power for a week. I'm at the end of the street in a cul-de-sac...meaning my neighbor had power and I didn't!

Luckily, Texans are nice people. There were extensions cords running across streets all over our neighborhood.

[–]tMoneyMoney 1 point2 points ago

I'm about 40 blocks below that blackout line, but I forgive you. ;)

[–]DoktorSteven 42 points43 points ago

This looks like the setup for a Batman story.

"Alfred, the Joker has cut off power to half of Gotham. It's madness in the streets. What? No, Alfred. I will not be joining Ms. Vale this evening."

"So the usual excuses then, Master Wayne."

[–]Sawdust_Prophet 8 points9 points ago

There is a somewhat similar Batman story called No Man's Land, in which a 7.6 earthquake hits Gotham and reduces it to a virtual wasteland. Wayne Manor is also completely destroyed (I think the Batcave too), and Batman leaves after he is convinced he's powerless to do anything. The federal government writes off the city as too difficult to recover, and it's left to rot in its own grave.

[–]Shapeshiftingkiwi 5 points6 points ago

THEN WHAT?!

[–]Sawdust_Prophet 5 points6 points ago

Then Captain Picard shows up, announces the formation of the Federation, ends world hunger and poverty, and creates a sugar-free zero-calorie Coca-Cola with no compromise in flavor at all.

Seriously no, Batman saves the day.

[–]A_Polite_Noise 0 points1 point ago

I'll say this much; the ending of No Man's Land has some of my favorite and most cruel Joker scenes ever.

[–]ZombieFever 0 points1 point ago

Isnt that sorta a unspoken part of the Arkham City game?

[–]Sawdust_Prophet 0 points1 point ago

The general outline is there, but the cause isn't a natural disaster. It also doesn't encompass the entirety of Gotham City, it is a large section of slums and run-down neighborhoods that are walled off.

[–]jckgat 18 points19 points ago

Anyone know why that bottom left quadrant stayed lit?

[–]limesmj 19 points20 points ago

that's battery park city (where i reside). the power here was initially turned off several hours before the landfall on purpose to minimize any potential damage from sea water flooding while the electricity was on. from what i recall, the power supplied to my neighborhood is in brooklyn and not from the 14th street power station (which flooded and was damaged) so we got power back the next day when everything was cleared.

Edit: http://www.dnainfo.com/new-york/20121030/new-york-city/power-outages-hit-half-million-con-ed-customers-wake-of-hurricane-sandy confirms that we get power from brooklyn.

[–]249ba36000029bbe9749 10 points11 points ago

So you're saying Battery Park is the area with lights and everywhere around it is dark...what are the odds?

[–]drc500free 2 points3 points ago

The name refers to the gun batteries that protected the harbor back in the day. (Also, Battery Park is the dark area just to the right of Battery Park City.)

[–]T-Luv 0 points1 point ago

Generator Park also never lost power.

[–]airsoftgun96 0 points1 point ago

I couldn't tell you for sure, but it could be that they did not get affected by the explosion on 14th st, or they had enormous generators (as that is where very important financial buildings are located). I live in NYC and went downtown and saw lights on and was like "are you kidding me?! lemme get some of that power!"

[–]brtw 6 points7 points ago

Probably something to do with the power system being rebuilt inside of the World Trade Center (the big building with lights on is 1 World Trade).

[–]studder 4 points5 points ago

I don't really think that's true... Here's a picture of the flooding at the World Trade Center site and this website is claiming that,

The flooding equals millions of gallons of water that could potentially cause costly damage to equipment and electrical systems at the multi-billion dollar construction project, though preliminary evaluations appear to show the site was not severely damaged.

Adding to the difficulties is an ongoing power outage in lower Manhattan that has interfered with efforts to pump out the damaging saltwater, which sources say is significantly more corrosive to electrical wiring and systems than freshwater.

[–]tallestred 0 points1 point ago

The tower is mostly built now, there are still floors at the top being worked on but the base of the building is done (at least it has glass and looks it, don't know if its being used or not). The construction site flood is probably right next door to WTC1. On the ground the rebuild also involved other building bases around wtc. Those prob aren't all finished yet.

[–]ILL_Show_Myself_Out 52 points53 points ago

That's crazy... I used to think of New York as one of those innermost sanctum's of civilization that could not POSSIBLY be shut down by mother nature... the power supposed to go out in backwoods areas like where I'm from.

[–]99trumpets 10 points11 points ago

New York is like an overgrown New England island town. The infrastructure there is actually not that great and like a lot of Northeast cities it's cobbled together out of centuries-old buildings and tunnels that were never designed for the modern era. Even cell reception in NY isn't very good. Every time I go there I'm struck by how ramshackle a lot of the city seems.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]creuter 39 points40 points ago

I disagree that Sandy wasn't that bad. The hurricane was 900 miles across. The surge that preceded it lasted two high tides and raised coastal water by like 10+ feet. Couple that with the storm coming in out of the northwest and I think any coastal city in the path of this thing would've felt it. Last year during Irene we weathered the storm pretty well.

[–]jetpacksforall 7 points8 points ago

I guess the deleted comment said Sandy wasn't that bad. In a way that's correct. Sandy was huge, with a lot of energy & water, but it was also diffuse. New York seems to be in a hurricane zone now, and so just imagine a Category 3 or 4 storm hitting this area. Or maybe it's hard to imagine that. But say instead of 90 mph winds, 150 mph winds. Instead of 12" of rain, more like 24". Instead of a 13 foot storm surge, a 20 foot storm surge. There's really no reason why a bigger, badder hurricane can't hit the northeast next year, or the following year. If people think Sandy's as bad as it gets, well, I really hope that's not what the emergency management people are thinking.

Most of the damage from Sandy was storm surge, with some moderate wind damage. Imagine another 6-8 feet of storm surge flooding, plus severe wind damage. That would be a Category 3. A 4-5 would be apocalyptic.

[–]maxstolfe 15 points16 points ago

Actually, the storm was 1500 miles across.

[–]Wrezix 2 points3 points ago

Look for pictures of the coast lines of NJ and NY. Pretty much all are obliterated. Manhattan was barely affected and shouldn't even be on the cover. The Rockaways look like Hiroshima after the bomb went off.

[–]AcerRubrum 17 points18 points ago

If Sandy struck anywhere south of Where it did, it wouldn't have been as bad, but the combination of 90mph winds, the immense size of the storm, and the built up surge thanks to its slow forward movement and astronomically high tide caused Sandy to push a 14 foot storm surge into NY Harbor, which rivals that of Category 2 or 3 hurricanes anywhere else.

[–]bugxbuster 6 points7 points ago

"Anywhere South"
...like from the Outer Banks to New Jersey perhaps?

[–]TNine227 1 point2 points ago

South of where it did. The Northwest section of the storm apparently has higher storm surges, so the main problem, the flooding, wouldn't have been severe even if the storm hit NYC almost directly.

From what i've heard, i think.

[–]bugxbuster 1 point2 points ago

Upvoted cuz I was pretty sure you'd be a dick. My bad.

[–]TNine227 1 point2 points ago

I...uh...okay?

[–]jetpacksforall 1 point2 points ago

Hurricanes spin counterclockwise, so the northeastern sector (12-3 o'clock) of the storm typically hits harder, with stronger offshore winds, more rain, bigger storm surge. Or if the storm's headed straight west, the 9-12 o'clock sector. Gilchrist was in Hurricane Ike's northeastern sector. There is no Gilchrist anymore. We don't talk about Gilchrist.

Dude, I've been through hurricanes twice to 5 times worse than what Sandy was. It sucks but it's not new.

[–][deleted] ago

[–]mikeash 8 points9 points ago

Category is simply based on wind speed, which is far from the only relevant measurement. Sandy was the largest Atlantic storm on record. Maybe it wasn't the worst storm ever, but to say it wasn't even all that bad is just stupid.

More people lost their homes then the news reported. On long island a lot of communities south of montaulk highway are devistated. The news only showed lindenhurst, longbeach and breezypoint. 90 percent of long island had no electricity. Long island itself has a population of 7.5 million (only nassau and suffolk counties not including queens and brooklyn).

Then include the people of nj and staten island who also lost their homes and you get a lot of people.

[–]TNine227 3 points4 points ago

Sky scrapers collapsing? Is it a hurricane or the apocalypse?

The biggest problem faced with a hurricane is the flooding from Storm Surges and wind damage. Sandy brought a lot of the first and a widespread case of the second.

The big problem with Sandy was NOT the rain or wind. It was the storm surge, which was not small.

You get downvoted because there are so many new york drama queens on reddit. They want their storm to be the worst EVER. If that's the case they can have all the hurricanes.

[–]cbarrister -2 points-1 points ago

Katrina.

[–]Majortom1029 4 points5 points ago

The cat system measures only wind. Everything else was equal to a cat 3 . Storm surge and pressure were bot cat 3 in size.

Also this was a hurricane and noreaster in one. When it hit nj and nyc it turned into a noreaster( places got 3 feet of snow). It wasnt just your run of the mill cat 1 hurricane.

[–]kencole54321 -1 points0 points ago

I don't know why you keep talking about cats but just an FYI, nor'easters aren't about snow.

A nor'easter (also northeaster; see below) is a type of macro-scale storm along the East Coast of the United States and Atlantic Canada, so named because the storm travels to the northeast from the south and the winds come from the northeast,

[–]NagisaK 2 points3 points ago

Umm not so much, their lower Manhattan subway system have to be constantly pumped water out of it or it will be flooded.

[–]Climaxing_Kitten 7 points8 points ago

That's pretty incredible.

[–]KosstAmojan 9 points10 points ago

How the hell did Battery Park get power while everything around it is dark?

[–]Geek-lover 39 points40 points ago

Isn't it obvious. They are battery powered.

[–]rstheif 9 points10 points ago

We were built after the city was hooked up to power, so we are on a different power grid. I think all of our buildings also have backup generators.

[–]KosstAmojan 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, I know all about that, but where is that power coming from? I spent years in Battery Park. I don't seem to recall a power plant.

[–]ConorPF 0 points1 point ago

What do you have against Keanu Reeves?

[–]PoorlyWordedUsername 5 points6 points ago

First time I'd say someone was lucky to live in battery park city. Fuck it's far from things.

[–]randible 6 points7 points ago

I gotta remember to quit clicking on these "stunning" image links. It takes forever to wear off and I just sit there staring for ages...

[–]clearblueeasy 3 points4 points ago

I can see my apt.. It's still dark

[–]StoneColdCarl 3 points4 points ago

Does anyone know if there's like a map showing the East Coast at night after Sandy? Kind of like this one: http://www.green-blog.org/media/images/uploads/2010/02/electric-lightening-at-night-around-the-world-earth-at-night1.jpg

[–]kvachon 3 points4 points ago

[–]shitty-analogy 3 points4 points ago

Just a warning guys:

I think I might be superhuman, because even though the title said the picture was "stunning" I retained all of my cognitive faculties throughout the entire duration of viewing it. As a matter of FACT I was not "stunned" for even a single moment.

I know it is unbelievable, try not to be too impressed.

[–]xilban 5 points6 points ago

Kind of reminds me of inFamous.

[–]thatwhitespot 4 points5 points ago

I'm stunned.

[–]ILL_Show_Myself_Out 4 points5 points ago

I'm having trouble believing it, Cotton!

[–]notmyrealname33 4 points5 points ago

All those poor hipsters in the village forced to actually live like they did in the time periods they covet

[–]FONClBrISCH 3 points4 points ago

TURN THE LIGHTS OUT, IT'S LESS DANGEROUS !!!

[–]tMoneyMoney 2 points3 points ago

It was even darker downtown the first few nights before they restored the power in that block by the WTC.

[–]myeyesdilate 3 points4 points ago

I know right, $5.99!

[–]afeller 2 points3 points ago

I would gladly pay $5.99 for a poster-sized picture of that.

[–]reallymyrealaccount 2 points3 points ago

Spec Ops: New York City

[–]fiddlesticksssss 2 points3 points ago

if you squint, you can see a lit-up, multi-story building to the slight-top-right of the WTC (the blue lit-up tower, for those bad at landmarks) -- i believe that is an nyu law dorm, which apparently had its own power plant. this beacon of light saved me as my navigational compass too many times, whilst dodging cars on avenues and creepers on streets!

[–]darny 3 points4 points ago

Scumbag New York magazine: Forgets the other four boroughs are part of the city too.

[–]rockincooldude 2 points3 points ago

Don't worry, every borough has been spamming the internet constantly with information. Under-reporting is almost non-existent in this case.

[–]Deverone 3 points4 points ago

Looking at this picture, all I can think about is how some parts of the city look way to bright for night time. The dark part is maybe just a bit darker then how I picture a city at night in my head.

I guess I just haven't had much exposure to cities with as much night life as NYC.

[–]Zebra_herder 4 points5 points ago

Light pollution. When I was a kid I lived about 30 miles from Chicago. There was a hill in my town that you could climb to the top of and barely make out the Sears Tower in clear weather. At night there was an orange dome encompassing the whole city. Now I've been living in major cities and there's always ambient light. Even driving at night I forget to turn on my headlights because they don't change how well you can see, it's purely for other cars.

[–]mating_toe_nail 1 point2 points ago

Your eyes adjust and normalize things alot more than the camera can. If you see the bright spots of the city right next to the dark spots, the bright spots will look insanely bright as they do in this pic. If you are standing in the bright spots, it won't look so bright.

TL;DR: Our eyes/brain have a lot more dynamic range than cameras.

[–]InsomniacDuck 1 point2 points ago

Who the hell took the picture??

[–]BWalker19 1 point2 points ago

What was the streets like with no lights and power? It seems like there would be a lot of looting happening in them.

[–]pendot 1 point2 points ago

No real looting as far as I could tell. The cop presence was pretty heavy. NYPD did a fantastic job.

[–]Jeffy29 1 point2 points ago

Magnificent picture.

[–]fragamacrunch -1 points0 points ago

There are still lights! They were faking it the whole time!

[–]leavingforgood -1 points0 points ago

i'm just WAITING for someone to say 'shopped'.

[–]ReallyForeverAlone 1 point2 points ago

I'll be surprised if a picture showing the contrast between lower Manhattan and midtown Manhattan doesn't make the TIME Pictures 2012 issue.

[–]jerichoc239 0 points1 point ago

I was on 32 and 84th yesterday, quite the view on the way home.

I always thought the most Stunning part of photos like this is that 12 million people live within that area (blackout and powered areas)

[–]teendaze69 0 points1 point ago

Does anyone else just read that magazine for the "Approval Matrix?"

[–]jetpacksforall 0 points1 point ago

Pulitzer photo right there.

[–]timothy53 0 points1 point ago

does anyone have full resolution

[–]julioga 0 points1 point ago

I was looking for Battery Park on the bottom corner, then realized its underwater.

[–]MBhustler 1 point2 points ago

I told my friend in NYC the other day how badly I wanted to take a photo much like this one. I tried to convince him to try to take a long-exposure photo showing the dark city, but he seemed distracted with trying to find running water...

[–]ChloeTheCat753 0 points1 point ago

I wonder what the Jersey shore looked like the night after the hurricane, in the sky.

[–]nameless_faceless -1 points0 points ago

Tornado pictures are more impressive.

[–]cantthinkofname 0 points1 point ago

what font is the headline title?

[–]77madsquirrel77 0 points1 point ago

Any one of you genius-types capable of removing the text from OPs photo so I can use it as my iPad background? I'd be much obliged!
