It's Kyary Pamyu Pamyu ! This hairstyle is because of her song "Fashion Monster".

[–]Akhsihs 42 points43 points ago

[–]BKLounge 24 points25 points ago

that was unbelievably catchy.

[–]orbitgum 16 points17 points ago

No kidding. I'm impressed with the melody and chords 1:09 to 1:20, and then 1:57 to 2:10 is great too.

edit: That might seem oddly specific. I'm a producer/DJ.

[–]stringdom 25 points26 points ago

That is the work of Yasutaka Nakata. Her producer and composer. The master mind behind Capsule and Perfume. The guy is a musical genius.

[–]orbitgum 4 points5 points ago

Nice!! Thank you for this. Going to hunt down his work.

[–]hirajo 0 points1 point ago

[–]BKLounge 4 points5 points ago

"That's Your Mazda!" cannot unhear.

[–]jubbajubbjubb 4 points5 points ago

(disclaimer, I'm not trying to be a dick at all! I promise) as a musician trying to broaden my perspective, i'm trying to get into the mindset of a dj/producer. I'd like to pick apart what you said.

what do you mean by melody and chords?

it sounds like the chords were straight up an Fminor7 thing to a Bbminor from 1:09-1:20 and the melody was mostly hanging out on the F as a talk-singing note.

and same idea with 1:57-2:20 (in terms of simplicty) but with few major chords instead.

what part of that was interesting to you? (ie texture, instrumentation, the way the words sounded etc etc) Again, I'm not trying to attack your taste, just trying to get into a different listening mindset.

[–]orbitgum 3 points4 points ago

In those two sections in particular, I'm impressed with how catchy the arrangement is (that includes synthesizer/sound design, rhythm, the vocal melody they chose, the instrument layers behind it chosen, and the overall balance which is EQ and mixing of the elements). Very impressive how that producer created it all and brought it all together in the way he did.
The other sections I wasn't such a big fan of, but still a very nice balance throughout the whole track.. Something that's really difficult to do.

If you'd like to see some production work, I've started streaming recently, something I don't see anyone else doing other than Deadmau5, but you can never see his screens anyway so it gets boring quickly.
This is me recording last night.
In the last hour of it or so, someone watching sends me some vocals to play around with. 1h30m mark I believe.

[–]_pH_ 2 points3 points ago

How would someone learn to do something like what you linked to?

[–]orbitgum 1 point2 points ago

Well, I guess the first step would be getting a decent computer (newer CPU is a must for sound processing), and then finding a DAW (digital audio interface) that interests you the most. And there are a lot out there.

I'm using Ableton in that video, though I also use Propellerhead Reason and Melodyne. There is also FL Studio, Logic, Cubase, Acid, Cakewalk, ProTools.. Lots out there.

So once you have the DAW you like or are interested in after doing some research, I would commit time to learning it. It's like, you want to learn to paint beautiful paintings? You have to first learn how to hold a brush.
Then you start to learn arrangement over time, building your songs, then maybe start getting into synthesizer design more in depth (and there are hundreds of synth programs out there), start learning about effects and automation, resampling and micro editing, then you start learning about balancing your song through mixing, equalization, compression, mastering..

It's a very very long road since a producer pretty much does everything from start to finish nowadays, but if that's something you want to do, there is a ton of support everywhere on the internet. I've been at it for the past 7 years now and am committed to making it my life. Others just do it as a hobby. Either way, I highly recommend checking it out.

I played drums for most of my life and that gives you a certain satisfaction, having an extremely emotional and almost primal connection with an instrument where so many of your thoughts and motions are effortless, maybe subconscious, certain complexities that an outsider who doesn't play what you play just can't wrap their heads around, because they don't know what the thought process and muscle memory feels like. Another drummer will always know, at least to some extent. Same goes for any other instrument, or artistic craft for that matter.
Being a producer gives you a whole different level of satisfaction.. Something where you create every single aspect of the music you're listening to, like you're a whole band, and the studio. Having complete control on that level is really something else.. Hard to explain. Very rewarding, but it takes a long time to make anything you feel proud of because it's a lot to learn, with a lot of areas to be able to grow in.

[–]jubbajubbjubb 2 points3 points ago

Oh I see what you mean. From what I gather, you're talking about the interaction/relationships of the layers (blend?) and not the actual notes of the chords/melody.

I guess I never really think about electronic-instrument blend and EQ as a live-performance instrumentalist.

Thanks for indulging my curiosity- I'll be definitely checking your link out!

[–]orbitgum 2 points3 points ago

Yeah it's just a completely different mindset when you're in control of 100% of the music, of all instruments, and all the balance between, not to mention most producers today do for their own music what audio engineers and studios do for bands, the whole mixing and mastering process.

Not to mention there is as much live instrumental as you want to be when you're a producer. A lot of producers are great on the piano, some can sing (think Trent Reznor when he first started on his own), a lot are great at guitar and incorporate that into the overall mix, I've been playing drums all my life and have a set I'll record into some tracks depending on what I'm going for.. It's just limitless really.
But it takes a looooong time to learn it all in order for the end result to not sound.. cheap, or unprofessional. A big aspect of electronic music is the immense sound quality and how the music feels. That's a huge reason why lower and sub frequencies are so popular, because you can literally feel those moments of a song. But you have to keep a fair balance of all frequencies too, or the listeners ears can get tired. Same applies to arrangement and everything else really.

[–]AaltoAlvo 6 points7 points ago

Ohhhh ho ho hooo! If you thought THAT was catchy, then wait till you hear this. Genius stuff.

[–]_pH_ -1 points0 points ago

the fuck did i just watch

[–]palpablescalpel 0 points1 point ago

I found it pretty repetitive. Not too bad though.

[–]jiruga 0 points1 point ago

seriously. normally i don't hear that kind of music, but this song is... pretty good.

[–]jiaguwen 0 points1 point ago

I always thought this was a particularly infectious song of hers: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pb3IdLdIc6s

[–]creuter -2 points-1 points ago

Curse you BKLounge. Catchy and good do not go hand in hand in this case. I regret everything.

[–]BKLounge 1 point2 points ago

Hah, I only ever said it was catchy. Your implying that it was good...let the truth out, your secret love for Halloween themed Jpop.

[–]zohany 2 points3 points ago

I watched that entire irritating video, but the hair style was not be be found.

[–]theshelbynic 5 points6 points ago

Never said it was in the video, but that it was because of the video.

[–]zohany 3 points4 points ago

Well that's what I get for not paying more attention.

[–]jiaguwen 2 points3 points ago

I did the exact same same thing :/

[–]zohany 1 point2 points ago

Good call.

[–]MiguelNegrin -2 points-1 points ago

no it's from a video... I linked it on the bottom.

[–]sipoloco 7 points8 points ago

She's a trip. Her videos are interesting to watch.

Check out PONPONPON.

Disclaimer: I'm a heterosexual male in his mid 20's.

[–]LittleToast 0 points1 point ago

Is she short or are the clothes giving her those proportions? They really went all-out making her look childlike.

[–]Ella6361 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, personally, I love all of her songs. They make me so happy. She's extremely popular in Japan, also amongst adults. I know some people who flew over to Japan to see her concert yesterday.

[–]devosdk 2 points3 points ago

I think you meant "devosdk's other wife, Kyary Pamyu Pamyu."

[–]Xenodyne -2 points-1 points ago

So she's basically Lady Gaga.

[–]skeeb- 3 points4 points ago

no shes better.

[–]Ginger_Mayhem 276 points277 points ago

I've never heard "boots" used to describe puking!

[–]frankie_says_relax 141 points142 points ago

I think that's more WTF than fingerhair.

[–]roguewave 29 points30 points ago

I agree. Booting is however a term used for injecting something like heroin, and a lot of people tend to throw up right after injecting a big dose if their tolerance is low.

[–]xX_Justin_Xx 21 points22 points ago

What are you talking aboot?

[–]roguewave 27 points28 points ago

Heroin.

[–]maynardftw 3 points4 points ago

Least she's not on meth, I suppose.

[–]roguewave 8 points9 points ago

Heroin: Just one more time. Meth: Not even once.

[–]fuckyoubarry 3 points4 points ago

You're getting downvoted because you assume that meth is worse than heroin. They're both pretty harmful and habit forming.

[–]maynardftw 9 points10 points ago

Actually I was making a very loose reference to /u/notamethaddict. I know heroin and meth are bad. Hurr.

[–]fuckyoubarry 1 point2 points ago

I don't get it.

[–]Autumnsprings 1 point2 points ago

there is a redditor with the name notamethaddict. maynardftw was making a vague reference to notamethaddict. /u/ = username.

[–]Sretsam 0 points1 point ago

I would say it has more to do with their tolerance for nausea being low than their tolerance of opiates. I throw up every time I'm in the ER thanks to the dilaudid, but it's gotten to the point where it does nearly fuck all for me.

[–]roguewave 1 point2 points ago

Interesting way of looking at it. I like it.

[–]GlimmerOfSoap 6 points7 points ago

I thought it was referring to giving a blowjob. Awks.

[–]Stitchface 20 points21 points ago

Weird, "booting" was standard terminology for throwing up when I was in high school.

[–]carpy22 6 points7 points ago

Same but for college.

[–]Hy-phen 7 points8 points ago

Other euphemisms for vomiting:

Yawning in technicolor

Eating backwards

[–]Aeyrie 6 points7 points ago

Driving the Big White Bus

[–]UndeniablyRexer 23 points24 points ago

Shouting groceries.

[–]Aeyrie 5 points6 points ago

Praying to the Porcelain god.

[–]Hy-phen 5 points6 points ago

These are great! I especially like "shouting groceries." I've also heard "downloading the menu."

[–]Autumnsprings 1 point2 points ago

shouldn't it be uploading?

[–]hannahandthewhite 4 points5 points ago

calling dinosaurs on the big porcelain phone.

[–]Winnable_Waffle 3 points4 points ago

Pebble dashing

[–]RoMo37 2 points3 points ago

Making street pizza

[–]nopemobile 1 point2 points ago

I thought it was some weird Australian slang... again.

[–]giraffricanamerican 0 points1 point ago

I've only heard it when talking about dirty people who crush up pills and inject them.

[–]dragonfox 0 points1 point ago

and this is why i went to the comments to figure out what that meant

[–]Citizen_Bongo 1 point2 points ago

Where I'm from puking is chunting.

[–]Ginger_Mayhem 0 points1 point ago

Well I've never heard that either

.<

[–]robotobo 0 points1 point ago

Not even in the phrase "boot and rally"? That's when you puke and then return to drinking and partying.

[–]battleschooldropout 11 points12 points ago

Always heard "puke and rally"

[–]tehserval 16 points17 points ago

She has fangs too.......

[–]bombsnuffer 5 points6 points ago

[–]ilcuore 0 points1 point ago

It's called Yaeba and it's considered very attractive in Japan.

[–]Koshatnik 26 points27 points ago

[–]DoctorTinman 16 points17 points ago

I think it's some sort of regional dialect for "barfs"

[–]Koshatnik 0 points1 point ago

[–]GenkiElite 10 points11 points ago

"Boots"?

[–]SdBolts4 0 points1 point ago

[–]CMD216 10 points11 points ago

I was put on this earth to love Kyary Pamyu Pamyu.

[–]amperages 3 points4 points ago

[–]The_Mornia_Savior 6 points7 points ago

Kyary! <3

[–]Novori12 2 points3 points ago

Where are you... Dartmouth? That is one of the FEW places I've been to that uses "booting" for drunken vomiting.

[–]freakk123 1 point2 points ago

I think it's a northeast thing-- I use it and I went to school in Connecticut, and a lot of my friends from NYC, where I grew up, use it as well.

[–]phishn37 2 points3 points ago

It's Kyary!!

[–]josawalk 2 points3 points ago

does boot mean puke?

[–]TheClayroo 2 points3 points ago

"boots" for throwing up out of your mouth. Yet the English make fun of North Americans calling NFL "football."

[–]RobbosmasH 2 points3 points ago

First there was the "bob", now there's the "goatse".

[–]gnbman 2 points3 points ago

Goatse would've been so much more bearable.

[–]CaptainClearDay 3 points4 points ago

She's adorable

[–]Okami99 4 points5 points ago

[–]Gorefest 1 point2 points ago

You don't need to be Japanese to understand Japanese...

[–]johnz0n 1 point2 points ago

but it helps a lot ;)

[–]Gorefest 0 points1 point ago

Fair enough.

[–]adamczuk 1 point2 points ago

Dem Canines.....

[–]zitfarmer 2 points3 points ago

The internet has ruined me.

[–]blastshieldaddiction 0 points1 point ago

Right, especially firing a ropestone.

[–]brussels4breakfast 1 point2 points ago

Well that's creepy.

[–]TheLifelessOne 4 points5 points ago

It's Harajuku fashion. It's not that creepy/weird; it's just not something you're used to.

[–]brussels4breakfast 1 point2 points ago

Oh. I've never heard of it.

[–]justskidding 1 point2 points ago

Reminds me of Nagi Noda's work. Unfortunately she's dead now.

[–]dlormin 1 point2 points ago

[–]RoboRay 0 points1 point ago

TIL you can just make up random new meanings for words and use them as if anyone will understand WTF you are talking about.

[–]ragemage420 1 point2 points ago

Is it bad that I recognize her?

[–]RabieBabies 1 point2 points ago

Goatse?

[–]2th 1 point2 points ago

[–]conservative_gamer 0 points1 point ago

When you say "boots" do you mean "takes a drink from your jugular"? She's very attractive but her teeth almost make her look vampiric.

[–]Citizen_Bongo 1 point2 points ago

But her teeth? I hope they're really like that not fake, does no one else find that hot as fuck?

Not even into biting or S&M remotely here...

[–]conservative_gamer 1 point2 points ago

Agreed.

[–]Citizen_Bongo 1 point2 points ago

I actually look for a sub reddit for hot vampire chicks just after seing this pic.

But its all hardcore BDSM unfortunately...

[–]dreamsin8bit 0 points1 point ago

Upvote for Boot usage!
