Definitely one of the weirder GIFs I've come across. Look at the text in the centre, the faces in your peripheral vision will become increasingly fucked up, but the second you look directly at the faces they'll become normal. (i.imgur.com)

The effect seems to depend on processing each face in light of the others. By aligning the faces at the eyes and presenting them quickly, it becomes much easier to compare them, so the differences between the faces are more extreme. If someone has a large jaw, it looks almost ogre-like. If they have an especially large forehead, then it looks particularly bulbous

I think we've known for quite a while that the way the brain performs human face recognition is via caricature. Your brain quickly identifies even the slightest variances in proportion and exaggerates them, and files that person under that set of exaggerations. When you see the same person again, you run the exaggerations against the patterns for people you already know and make a match.

My (purely amateur, nonscientific) guess is that when you stare at the center your brain is able to do the exaggeration part of the recognition process but unable to do the pattern-matching portion. The celebrities become distorted and you don't really recognize any of them until you shift your eyes and stare right at them.

The problem with this, though, is that I was able to recognize some of the celebrities in my peripherals. I think the fact that they're familiar faces already adds to this fact.

Actually, watching it again, it's only Hugh Laurie I recognize, no matter what. The others I'd have to look at to make the connection.

I actually think it has to do with that image I've seen around here a few times, where his eyes, nose, and mouth were scaled waaaay the heck down.

In other words, I've been trained to recognize Hugh, no matter how distorted his face is.

That's a very interesting thought. I wonder what the results of that experiment would be if you were first introduced to and made to study images of the people with their features shrunk.

Actually, I wonder how the experiment would go if all the images were replaced with the edited "small feature" photos. Perhaps our minds would compensate, and the effect would be less pronounced.

            I found the trick was to randomly resize the comic in-between compressions. If it's the same size, a grid emerges and it compresses less and less, but if you add a random resize into the mix, each iteration adds a heap of bonus artifacts. It's like wobbling the ladder while someone tries to change a lightbulb, over and over. No fixed bulb, and a heap of broken glass.

                The next time you're stuck in a boring lecture or class look about a foot to the side of the lecturer/teacher while 'focusing' on their face.                       This is a common test for schizophrenia. The faces become distorted because of left-right hemisphere communication. If you have schizophrenia, the left and right hemispheres of your brain do not communicate and the distortion of the faces are either reduced, or in severe cases, not noticed at all.

                      I've never heard of this as a test for schizophrenia, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's not, I study normal cognitive functioning not abnormal. However, given the rest of the information they give (about the hemispheres not communicating) I feel safe in saying they are very far from an expert on schizophrenia. You can safely ignore what they say until a source is provided.

                              You may be unintentionally seeing them the "normal" way. Maybe move a little closer to your screen while focusing on the text.

                              What's supposed to happen is that their images will fall on the part of your retina that provides less detail than other parts. Because your brain isn't receiving good, high quality detail about what you're seeing there, you perceive their features as exaggerated and mutant-ish.

                              Try changing the size of the gif to match the width of your face so your blind spots are actually somewhere around where the face images are.. other posts explain how that is what makes your brain fill in the gaps with weird shit.

                                For my masters i chose to take a meditation class. My instructor told everyone to get a partner, face each other, and stare into each other's eyes while saying whatever comes to our heads, one at a time. I unfortunately, was paired with my teacher. As we continued I found myself concentrating solely on his eyes, and the rest of his face, in my perpheral vision was becoming so distorted, that I felt forced to look, as he would then say, "keep your eyes on my eyes"...... very weird.

The pictures start looking kinda polygonal sorta, as in the skull seems like it's made of sharp edges rather than a smooth curve, but nothing else really starts seeming weird.                                 You can produce the effect even when directly staring at things by being very tired but not allowing yourself to fall asleep. English text can appear randomized, patterns become unstable, etc. You can even see individual text glyphs change shape back and forth.

                                What you see is what your mind stitches together from its internal texture memory, based on several very low-resolution streams from the optic nerve. The brain prioritizes texture mapping on what you focus on, and lets the peripheral areas have lower priority and applies more predictive texture mapping to them, which fails in some situations.

As we see change from one "normal" face to one with higher eyebrows, higher cheekbones, etc, our brains fill in the gaps that our peripheral vision cannot confirm, adding non-human features (for example primate features, boxy angles, even alien features).
