Yeah a lot of these aren't that real. Maybe she was a worker, but they did a lot of staging with pretty women in order to show the public that they weren't turning American women burley and un-lady like for when the men returned.

I think a better title might be "Female Lockheed employee posing by a P-38 Lightning."

While she certainly could be an aircraft worker, this picture is clearly staged, and not someone actually working on the plane.

I thought maybe she was screwing in one of the larger, flathead-type fasteners like you can see in the panels above. Hard to tell cos it's obscured by her hand.

I don't know if this is true, but the consensus on the original post's comment thread was that she was filing a rivet hole. A file, not a screwdriver? I really have no idea myself though.

Her photographer kindly provided her with a nice reflector and/or fill light to compensate for the harsh shadows that would have normally resulted in a shitty exposure with having the Sun at her back.

Not saying this is impossible to achieve, but she's not even working on anything practical. It's war propaganda using an attractive female and for the same reason why people use them today (grabbing the attention of young males for whatever). Sex sells.

Photographs were staged especially of women during this time, but I don't agree that no good photographs come out of people actually working. I posted a picture of a female air raid warden rescuing an little girl which I thought was a good picture, I also got similar flak for saying female. As marquis_of _chaos said its about historical context.

I have no original source on this image so I cannot guarantee its provenance. It does appear on several blogs but I cannot find any source that links back to an original version. (Personally, it feels slightly off and may be a recreation picture, although I could be totally wrong) If anyone has a better source or description please let me know.

The harsh contrast makes me believe it is a colorized black & white photo, but thats the only slightly off thing about it. I'm thinking the colorization overdid the makeup a bit. I'd also love to see the original (black & white).
