Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  6. No animated images. Please submit them to /r/gif, /r/gifs, or /r/reactiongifs instead.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

now add an instagram filter

[–]evilted 1 point2 points ago

Ack! Myspace is back!

[–]Churn 21 points22 points ago

Um... am I the only one wondering who took this picture?

[–]sevl 6 points7 points ago

it's a composite

[–]lahwran_ 1 point2 points ago

where's the distortion from the arm that took it, then?

[–]jimmypopjr 4 points5 points ago

I was wondering the same. Must be using one of those martian mirrors.

[–]hyman_shocker 7 points8 points ago

Curiosity will never get a date on okcupid if it keeps taking these shallow mirror shots

[–]SeskaLien 0 points1 point ago

It was taken by a camera called MAHLI that is mounted on the end of its robotic arm, pointed to look back towards the rover.

[–]flyersfan78 1 point2 points ago

Call me crazy, but wouldn't you be able to see said arm?

[–]lahwran_ 0 points1 point ago

just the distortion on the base of it ... but I can't find it ._.

[–]SeskaLien 1 point2 points ago

It's a mosaic of 55 separate images, so distortions from the base are easily removed since the arm is in a different position for different sets of images. Source: I was on the instrument team for this particular camera.

I want to believe you, but I can't tell if you're lying or not. Since I'm too damn lazy to fact check, I'll believe you.

Its a she?

[–]spork3 1 point2 points ago

Yup. Not officially, but Curiosity is generally referred to as "she". I believe it's the same for Spirit and Opportunity also.

[–]AgentDaedalus 1 point2 points ago

Most ships and whatnot as referred as "she".

[–]lahwran_ 0 points1 point ago

I'm going to refer to them as "he" from now on to throw everyone off

[–]AgentDaedalus 1 point2 points ago

Ah, the Titanic. He was a good ship.

Hm.

[–]i_am_just_a_number 3 points4 points ago

I. cannot. get. enough. of. Curiosity. The best thing mankind has EVER done.

[–]aaronaqua1 8 points9 points ago

I'm sure the remaining Apollo astronauts would disagree with you there.

[–]i_am_just_a_number 4 points5 points ago

Possibly. And maybe the man who flew the first supersonic flight would disagree with them in turn. It's intrinsic in the nature of achievements to be superceded. One day - hopefully soon - Curiosity will pale in comparison to the first successful human roundtrip and landing to Mars.

[–]aaronaqua1 1 point2 points ago

How does flying a plane at Mach 1 compare to walking on the moon?

[–]i_am_just_a_number 0 points1 point ago

It doesn't, it's a random example just to illustrate the chronological nature in which achievements get bettered. All I'm saying is that for every wonderful achievement a bigger one will come along eventually. The Apollo astronauts are right to be proud of themselves and will never lose their place in history, but time moves on and bigger things happen.

[–]aaronaqua1 1 point2 points ago

I think you just got a little over excited... Yes, Curiosity's successful landing on Mars was great, but it's hardly the "best thing mankind has EVER done."

[–]314R8 1 point2 points ago

both could not be done, until they were.

[–]Maxaxaxaxax 2 points3 points ago

Both required countless hours of engineering and lives. Both were conquered by scientists and guys with massive balls who wouldn't take "that's impossible" for an answer. FUCK YEAH HUMANS!

[–]Surfacetovolume 6 points7 points ago

I don't know. There's also ice cream.

[–]xilog 1 point2 points ago

There are so many technological achievements in the last few hundred years that I'd find it difficult to say that any one of them was THE best thing we've ever done, but Curiosity is sure as hell up there.

[–]constance_noring 0 points1 point ago

That self absorbed robot really needs a facebook page!

[–]constance_noring 0 points1 point ago

Oh jeez I should have known! Thanks ...

[–]themarknessmonster 0 points1 point ago

How are these pictures being taken?

[–]krabZero 0 points1 point ago

So awesome, just chilling on mars.

[–]Arcaron 0 points1 point ago

That's weird... a selfportrait without a bathroom in the background... it must be fake!!!

[–]burninrock24 1 point2 points ago

lol at the tread marks.

"Go home Curiosity, you are drunk."

[–]tohnski 1 point2 points ago

SELFIE!

[–]Bott 1 point2 points ago

Sure, Mars. The forgot to erase the footprints (made you look).

[–]aaronaqua1 0 points1 point ago

You spelt Curiosity wrong.

[–]the_brew -1 points0 points ago

Maybe OP is British

[–]Narfubel 2 points3 points ago

I don't think names change, so it should still be Curiosity.

[–]the_brew -3 points-2 points ago

You clearly missed the point.

[–]tnoy 0 points1 point ago

What point? That British people do not spell names right?

[–]burninrock24 -1 points0 points ago

Proper nouns shouldn't change based on dialect.

[–]sevl -2 points-1 points ago

they should've photoshopped the footprints out

[–]Panzer91 1 point2 points ago

Science doesn't photoshop things

[–]DarrenEdwards 2 points3 points ago

Explain the composite shot then.

[–]horible_gramer 0 points1 point ago

It's just that, a composite shot. It's a composition of various (unaltered) shots taken by the rover. Nothing is photoshopped.

[–]Skwerley 0 points1 point ago

I don't think you get it. If they used an image editing software to compile the images, it's "photoshopped." That phrase isn't exclusive to altering things to look like something they arent. Which, by the way, this is.

[–]tnoy 0 points1 point ago

The individual tiles would have been adjusted for lighting and would have had geometric corrections made.

[–]andrewsmith1986 -3 points-2 points ago

What is with the duck face?

This isn't my/r/space

[–]Churn -1 points0 points ago

If the rover had a rock'n sound system installed on it and blasted AC/DC everywhere it went like Iron Man, what would that sound like in the Martian atmosphere?

[–]Skwerley 0 points1 point ago

I don't know why the downvotes, it's a legitimate question, without the "iron man and ac/dc" bit. I would imagine it would be hard to hear, because the atmosphere is so much thinner.

[–]tnoy 0 points1 point ago

I think it would sound the same. The density of the air would change the speed of the sound, but not the frequency.

[–]jimmypopjr -4 points-3 points ago

Was expecting duckface for some reason.
