Seriously, why would you want to be close to someone juggling FIRE?

[–]SirRealle 61 points62 points ago

Fire spinner here. You'd be surprised at how often people will walk close enough to get hit by my lit wicks. It seems every other show I put on when busking, some dumbass thinks it's going to be cool to casually walk right in the way. I consistently have to move away from them, and if/when they don't take the hint, I have to tell them to enjoy the show from at least 10 feet away. I've only hit somebody once when they decided to walk through the middle of my show (despite the crowd in a circle around me) while on their cell phone. Thankfully they didn't catch fire. It would have been bad if my audience saw me laughing while they burned.

[–]blueocean43 12 points13 points ago

God yes. What do you spin? Poi are absolutely deadly for idiot audiences. I spin fans and have luckily only set one other person on fire (and that was another performer. I put them out quick but... wopse) but I don't busk so usually have lots of lovely security round me.

[–]SirRealle 4 points5 points ago

Primarily poi and contact staff, but I also do rope dart demos, hooping, and diabolo.

[–]blueocean43 2 points3 points ago

Oh wow, I've never seen rope darts used. Do you do professional performances?

[–]Vessix 0 points1 point ago

Experience with a staff alone taught me the positioning and movement necessary for wrapping, kicking, using centrifugal force, etc. I'd consider myself an amateur with poi but that experience still assists learning how to control a weighted rope.

I'm in a group often hired for events around our area/state. We have a rope dart we can all have fun with and not hurt ourselves, but no one spent much time learning it yet.

If this guy is competent with poi and contact I bet he can entertain an audience using a rope dart without much practice.

[–]SamIs_ThatYou 0 points1 point ago

How do you light a diabolo on fire?

[–]randorder 0 points1 point ago

There is a wick in the axel that you soak in fuel and light it. It makes for a cool effect since the rapid rotation makes the flame small but sharp. Doesn't last too long unfortunately.

[–]omegawoot 0 points1 point ago

I as well burn poi, contact staff & Rope Dart :)

[–]ScottFromCanada 5 points6 points ago

Lit wicks and nitwits. Bad combination.

[–]Berdiie 0 points1 point ago

Do you use anything to set off your performance space? I've found that buying a length of rope and setting it out as a circle actually helps pretty well to keep people a safe distance. I've seen people use signs, but they actually don't appear to work as well as a rope circle.

[–]ohmickywhatapity 0 points1 point ago

I spin fire poi, also...I will never understand how people manage to walk into my flaming circle of doom without noticing the bright, shiny FIRE.

[–]droivod 1 point2 points ago

Did you hit them with your fist?

[–]hopfot 33 points34 points ago

"Hey, this looks dangerous. I think I'll get closer" HERP DERP

[–]ILoveCamelCase 3 points4 points ago

"Oh, what's that over there? A guy juggling fire? I'd better sneak up behind him and see how close I can get. Sometimes it sucks being a moth in a human body"

[–]CrackedPepper86 1 point2 points ago

I'm pretty sure this is part of the act.

[–]TheHerbalGerbil 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, I love how he doesn’t see any risk in standing 2 feet from a fire juggler wearing a plastic sweater. Why do I have the feeling alcohol was involved?

[–]Squalor- 47 points48 points ago

[–]new_math 56 points57 points ago

If you freeze the video at 0:44 you can clearly see a large dark circle where the guy who caught fire put something flammable on his vest. This is funny, but very staged.

[–]soochosaurus 20 points21 points ago

after he finished pouring the lighter fluid on he wiped it on his shirt

[–]Anomander 3 points4 points ago

Also, getting into position as the juggler finished his bit.

[–]Thepunk28 0 points1 point ago

Yeah he stays a safe distance away, until it is his time to shine. Right on cue for the show.

[–]Shagoosty 2 points3 points ago

I'm not sure, I mean yes he wipes it on his shirt, but why was he pouring it into his hand anyways?

[–]soochosaurus 3 points4 points ago

yes, I'm saying he wiped it on his shirt on purpose so he could be lit on fire.

[–]Shagoosty -1 points0 points ago

But my point is, why? Why would he even be pouring it into his hands to begin with. It's hard to tell if it's staged, or he's just an idiot.

[–]Platypoctopus 0 points1 point ago

He poured it into his hands because it was staged... that's the point. Nobody would pour lighter fluid on their own hands instead of letting it fall onto the pavement, so he was probably intentionally setting himself up to be set on fire for the sake of the video.

[–]Raider1284 0 points1 point ago

to stop the lighter fluid from pouring all over their clients pool deck.

[–]Shagoosty 6 points7 points ago

Lighter fluid evaporates...

[–]metrognome64 10 points11 points ago

A motion for Shenanigans has been tabled. Is there a second?

[–]evilsdeath 1 point2 points ago

You can also hear a girl laughing near the very end of the video.

[–]whoisrich 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, also to the right side is a guy with a towel ready to help put it out.

[–]Kduzera 16 points17 points ago

He caught on fire so quickly cause he cleaned his lighter fuid soaked hands on his sweater... What a dumbass.

[–]TheHerbalGerbil 3 points4 points ago

No, just staged. You can see at 0:44 that he had really soaked a patch of his sweater while everybody’s attention was on the juggler.

[–]Crannynoko 2 points3 points ago

There is a pool in the video.

[–]omegawoot 0 points1 point ago

Spinning fire for an audience without a safety? idiot.

[–]TypicalRunOfTheMill 16 points17 points ago

He's a witch! Burn him!!

[–]commanderhiruma 9 points10 points ago

He turned me into a newt!

[–]aakaakaak 8 points9 points ago

A newt?

[–]Chieron 7 points8 points ago

I got better!

[–]herpty_derpty 21 points22 points ago

The dangers of photobombing.

[–]faleboat 31 points32 points ago

So, this was staged.

You can tell cause the guy in the back ground steps into where the juggler is going to "Ta Dah," But was well out of distance before, and the dude's shirt instantly catches fire. Without an accelerant like alcohol or a flammable solvent, cloth doesn't catch fire instantly like that.

That said, I think this is hilarious, cause the joke is on the audience that flips the fuck out.

[–]warcin 3 points4 points ago

If you watch the video above you will see that they guy wiped lighter fluid he got on his hands starting the batons on his sweater. I think I am going to stick with the opinion that it was a stupid accident

edit fixed spelling

[–]TheHerbalGerbil 2 points3 points ago

Except for the fact that when he steps into the frame around 0:44 he has a totally soaked patch on his sweater. That’s more than he would have gotten from just wiping his hands there. Heck, it’s more than was there when he wiped his hands.

It’s staged. He squirted the sweater while the audience’s attention was fully on the juggling act.

[–]Munt_Custard 1 point2 points ago

How can you guys actually see any of this? Not only is it a gif for ants, but the quality is pretty low as well. I'm trying to verify your claims, but all I can see is a mush of colours.

[–]TheHerbalGerbil 0 points1 point ago

Another commenter linked to the YouTube video.

As you can see,

  • the guy who got set on fire was the juggler’s assistant, helping him douse and light the torches.
  • At 0m44s, you can see him step back into range pretty deliberately and with a patch of his sweater really soaked through with fuel. Not to mention, the juggler is more theatric about the “BAM!” than the juggling act itself.

So all in all, when you look closely, it really gives itself away as staged.

Not that I think it was done purely to BS people online for imaginary internet points. I personally think it was great showmanship.

[–]Munt_Custard 1 point2 points ago

Now that I have seen the original video I agree completely with these claims.

[–]TheHerbalGerbil 0 points1 point ago

Have an upvote. It’s always awesome to find objective people on the Internet, whatever side of whatever issue they stand on.

Good to meet ya, Cunt Mustard.

[–]Munt_Custard 0 points1 point ago

Thanks. Also, I'm not sure if you misread my name or intentionally misspelled it...

[–]TheHerbalGerbil 1 point2 points ago

;3

[–]mooktard 2 points3 points ago

Actually, some cloth can and will catch fire instantly like that. Fine cotton knits are particularly flammable, and some synthetics are like match-light tinder. I had a cotton sweater and I tried to burn off a loose thread. The fuzz caught, and my whole torso was engulfed in flames for about a second.

[–]faleboat 1 point2 points ago

Granted, but generally the whole of the fabric with a like texture will burn, not one central part of the fabric, such as we see in this image. That said, I have actually seen a lady wearing one of those "comfy soft" sweaters light her whole arm on fire when she wasn't careful with her Zippo lighter, so you certainly make a fair point.

[–]new_math 4 points5 points ago

I thought is might be some cologne at first, but after looking closely at the video you can freeze it at 0:44 and see a large dark spot right in the middle of the guys chest, where he put alcohol or something.

[–]Beau_Vine 6 points7 points ago

He wiped his hand that he previously held under the torches as he poured naftaline over them.

[–]TheHerbalGerbil -1 points0 points ago

Which at the time didn’t produce that patch. He did it out-of-frame while everybody’s attention was on the juggler.

[–]Beau_Vine 0 points1 point ago

Well no shit you didn't see a wet patch initially - since he wipes it on part of his body that is out of the fucking frame.

I'm not saying he couldn't do that, but between split second that part is visible, naftaline having different surface tension which causes it to sink into fabric more slowly (this is why they kept pouring it on) - being definitive that is what must've happened is a pretty over the top application of "I can tell from the pixels".

[–]TheHerbalGerbil 0 points1 point ago

Also consider that the guy in the sweater is helping the juggler in the first place; he’s not a hapless passerby.

[–]omegawoot 0 points1 point ago

It's fuel transfer from the wicks. Trust me, I'm a fire spinner and that happens that early in the burn. That wouldn't happen after a few minutes of burn, but that quickly, the wick acts like a sponge and when it hits the shirt squirts fuel onto it while igniting it. This is why I have a fire safety with me when I spin fire.

[–]faleboat 0 points1 point ago

Me too! well, not a fire spinner, I guess, but I juggle torches for little birthday shows and the like. Certainly, you can have a bit of fuel transfer from the torch head to another fabric, but that is super localized. The whole of this guys chest goes up, not just the contact point. I am still convinced that this remains a set up, not an unfortunate accident.

[–]Golf16 0 points1 point ago

If you watch the video he wipes a flammable liquid on his chest after fueling and lighting the sticks, but yes definatly staged!

[–]kaleidospectrum -1 points0 points ago

If you watch the video you would see the guy wipes some flammable liquid on his chest - obv staged!

[–]LOOSEBOOTY -3 points-2 points ago

I can tell from some of the pixels...

[–]Psiclone01 7 points8 points ago

I didn't know Larry David could juggle

[–]TheDroopy 1 point2 points ago

This is actually Larry David's lovechild with Jeffrey Tambor

[–]Munt_Custard 1 point2 points ago

Is that meant to be a smile?

[–]BrorannasaursRex 1 point2 points ago

Glad someone else thought this too

[–]shraf2k 0 points1 point ago

[–]fieroturbo 0 points1 point ago

I'm laughing hysterically at this and I don't feel bad about it, and that makes me feel bad about it.

[–]STRINGALING 0 points1 point ago

Once i saw this guy juggling chainsaws, which was cool, unless something needed to be sawwed down. Then it was just annoying.

[–]Acidrain77 0 points1 point ago

It's all about the dismount.

[–]gdnwo 0 points1 point ago

Juggling is the best brain exercise a person can do to stimulate brain activity...

[–]BDJ56 -1 points0 points ago

Photoshop?

[–]dytbob -1 points0 points ago

This video is part of an attempted viral marketing campaign for stunt professionals who do "controlled Burns". They are located in Orlando Florida. The flames are real, but he is wearing protective garments.

[–]PoppetFFN 0 points1 point ago

I just giggled way too loud at work.

[–]Henderman312 1 point2 points ago

Larry David?

[–]tuskgarr 0 points1 point ago

[–]BrendOTron 1 point2 points ago

[–]SweetFawn 0 points1 point ago

This gif loaded quickly. - said this one person. This one time.

[–]ImKindaAwkward 1 point2 points ago

Why is reddit so against juggling today?

[–]essjay281 0 points1 point ago

I thought people usually kept their distance from Thoros of Myr

[–]Degran 0 points1 point ago

Is it just me or do they look like the same guy?

[–]Jaboomaphoo 0 points1 point ago

I was expecting this to end horribly but then that guy's face caught fire.

[–]ChewbaccasDefense 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, let me just stand here next to the guy juggling fire.

[–]jimbobhas 0 points1 point ago

a lot of juggling related 'mishaps' on the front page today

[–]thisistif 0 points1 point ago

I know most people don't like sweaters but I think his was hot.

[–]Squeezymo 0 points1 point ago

The gif is a lot funnier if you pretend the juggler is Larry David.

[–]lala989 0 points1 point ago

This is known as the 'surprise you're on fire!' trick.

[–]demoniacalopolis 0 points1 point ago

BWAHAHAHAHAH! Encore! Encore!

[–]Homletmoo 0 points1 point ago

We had the whole debate last time this was posted. It was staged - the guy poured lighter fluid on his shirt. Otherwise he wouldn't have caught alight so quickly.

[–]munkigirl0 0 points1 point ago

Who gets that close to someone TWIRLING FIRE?

[–]Strobe_Synapse 0 points1 point ago

[–]secretlakr 0 points1 point ago

My turn, my turn...

[–]wigglewigglewiggles 0 points1 point ago

I was thinking about this in the morning. NO, I am not the suspect.

[–]hewhoknocks -1 points0 points ago
