that's a pretty dumb policy. he should be embracing people spreading his work and making him more well known

There is a difference between getting your own work exposure and someone's variation giving you exposure.

Translating text isn't something that produces an obvious result. Maybe he tries to hit a certain style that he and his translator are working on.

If you take one individual comic, you might find a fitting translation, but what if that translation does not fit a subtle recurring style/theme the artist tries to conserve in translation? What if the translator misunderstood or simply missed some of the subtle thing? He wants to be known for his work and on what he thinks his work is. It's a very normal request, and perhaps he simply thought the translations were bad and discredited his work, but did not want to say that to the guy.

If I take look at the translation in this post, I think the translation just sounds weird. From my knowledge of English and the intonations/context "weird" is often associated with in (British) English, it just sounds off.

I interpreted the Dutch "vreemd", in this context, as the egg very formally stating that he thought that what happened was out of the ordinary but of no real concern. His expression/pose in the last frame being similar to first frame gives extra weight to this interpretation because it implies that the egg will just go about his day again as if nothing special happened.

The English word that comes to mind for a mildly stated observation of unusual events is "curious". I would choose this word, because it always is used in a mild and formal context. Translating "vreemd" to "weird" is just a one-to-one translation with no contextual relevance.

Millions of people around the world would rather watch shows with shitty subs than no subs at all, and that's what's happening here. His precious artistic vision isn't going to stop that.

Have you ever seen a shitty translation of something? It can ruin a good peice of work, and the humor of the poor translation tends to overshadow the art itself (Think Zero Wing ("All Your Base"): it could be a great game, but all anyone will ever remember it for is the shitty translation work).

By controlling how and when his work gets translated, he can go with someone he trusts and make sure they do a good job with it. I certainly respect his decision on this.
